How to Restore Rusty Outdoor Furniture || Making a Super Easy Cushion Cover

- I came across two outdoor metal chairs and a table that were the perfect size for a small patio space. But they were in very bad shape. Three coats of paint were chipping off of them and there were patches of thick, crusty rust. But I saw their potential.
This was a fun project because 1) I was restoring them for a very dear young lady, and 2) she wanted them painted a fun color - pink!
I even show you how you can easily sew a cushion cover for foam inserts purchased at a thrift store.
Come see how I revive life into these old, discarded pieces to create a cute outdoor set.
Products used:
3/4" wire brush
3M Half Facepiece Respirator 6200
SurfPrep Sanding System with Foam Pads
Sanding block, 120 and 220 grit paper
Rustoleum Professional Primer for Metal
Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Spray Paint in Vintage Blush
Scotchgard Heavy Duty Water Shield
Cushions (purchased at Goodwill so brand is unknown)
Fabric purchased at JoAnns
Muslin for backside of cushions was a painters drop cloth - Навчання та стиль
Best mother in Law ever.
Rust oleum isn’t good enough to stop rust. Once a piece starts rusting you need to use a neutralizer to stop it or it will keep rusting. You can buy it in a spray. The brand I use Ospho. Just an fyi for your next rusty project. Those chairs turned out so pretty.
Thank you.
Thank you. This is one of the best restoration tutorials I have found on YT. Thank you and beautifully done!
Wow, thank you!
I agree with the comment up above a bit. This is really the best tutorial video on YT for restoring patio furniture. I have never done anything like this before, but you have me feeling pretty confident. Thank you very much, immediate like and subscribe!!!!
Thank you for watching, your kind feedback and the subscription. 😊
Your sons girl friend is Very lucky, I hope that she and your son appreciate you❤
They do!!!! 😊
Your chairs turned out so beautifully! Amazing how a little fresh coat of paint can give something new life 😌
I wouldn’t necessarily say how little a fresh cost of paint can give it new life bc if it wasn’t for all her sanding and prepping/priming that coat of paint would’ve made the chairs look worse then before
The reaction made all that effort worth it. ❤
Isn’t she the sweetest? I love her!
Thank you for this video. My egg chair way overdue for this treatment, now I can plan my restoration :) Don't plan on buying a sander, so I'm in for a workout.
I’d suggest using sanding blocks because they will be easier on your hands and fingers. Buy different grits such as 80 if you have super stubborn areas. 180 or 150 if it looks like the paint will come off easier and then 220 to finish off and make everything smooth. Don’t forget eyewear and a mask or respirator. Good luck!
@@tableflippinghousewife Thank you! I wouldn't have thought of getting coarser grits, so this suggestion will help a lot.
You're so talented and easy to watch and very kind to do this for your son's girlfriend. They're both lucky.
A Mother’s Love. Great job.
Too cute, love it!😊
So stinkin cute! Love that fabric, she was so thrilled! Always look forward to what's next.
Glad your work is so appreciated! They're fortunate to have you in their corner
Adorable. Much smoother finish than I would have thought possible without completely stripping them.
Right? I was surprised myself. Thanks for your feedback!
Super cute!
Great job re-purposing!

So cute!! I really enjoyed this!! ❤
I'm so glad!
I love the fabric you used! It's absolutely adorable! ❤
Thank you! Funnily enough I had already purchased fabric and on the way out of the store that day I saw this one. I walked right back to the cutting counter. 😂
Beautiful. Love the colour
Thank you! I’m not a pink lady so it was fun to use a color outside of my comfort zone for someone else.
Love = Perfection
I am in the process of making my garden chairs pretty again. Thank. You for the tips ❤ from Ireland 🇮🇪
Greetings Ann in Ireland! Thank you!
Adorable!!! Love the colors and the cushion covers. I’m repainting an and old metal outdoor table and chairs similar to those. Wishing I could have you make the cushions. Those are so cute!!
Go to Goodwill for cushions. It's not hard to make covers for them if you have a sewing machine. And if you don't, I bet a freind of yours does and can whip some up for you.
Oh my goodness! That turned out adorable. I love the fabric.
Thank you! I fell in love with the fabric too. I labored over it and originally bought something else. On the way out of the fabric store I found this one and had to go back for it. 🤣
Good call! 😁
Lots of loving labor; hope she appreciates them and you.
She does! She's lovely!
OMG, How Cute😍
Thank you!!! It was a fun project for a sweet girl! ❤️
I absolutely love this!! You are definitely my kind of gal- thrift shopping, garage sale finds, sewing, sanding painting priming and transformation!!! I liked and subscribed because you are kind and awesome! How sweet of you to make this for your son’s girlfriend. You are a good Mom. ❤❤❤
You are so sweet! This just made my day! Thank you for the sub!
I really have enjoyed your video 😊
I liked that you got their reactions on video. Chairs look great :)
Awww, thank you. I did the same when I painted a dresser for my son.
Is this webbing metal or plastic? Thanks
@@lauriewetter9754 the pieces were all metal.
This video was very helpful thanks ❤
Glad it was helpful!
I just got 42 stackable metal chairs donated to me. So this is about to be my life! LOVED the cushions. You have inspired me.
Yay! I'd love to see what you do with them.
We just bought a house and there are four similar rusted old chairs in our shed. Looked up how to restore them and wasn't disappointed! These look wonderful! Thanks for the video 🩷
Thank you! Be sure to send me a picture if you clean yours up!
Wow! You really did a great job on the chairs and coushins. I just bougth a table and 2 chairs that are heavy iron and rusty. I just scrapped them and will follow your advise and steps. I hope I do it well. Thanks again.
Awwww. Thank you! Please come back and let me know how it goes.

I just rescued a metal bench from the side of the road and hope to restore it like your gorgeous chairs! Thanks for tutorial.
You can do it!
OMG hi I just watched your video on how to restore metal chairs. You are amazing I love how you went through the different steps and last the cushions just super cute. I am going to subscribe to watch you and am going to share your tips. I am just starting to restore my 3 piece outdoor setting. Thanks so very much. By the way I am Therese from NSW Tamworth Australia.
Thank you so much! ❤️
U did an amazing job I would hire u ❤
Thank you!
This was a fun project! I wondered while watching you spray paint, if you could have used your paint sprayer?
I only use water-based products in my sprayer and since these are outdoor pieces I needed the durability of an oil based paint. So I spray painted them.
❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏
💕
Great job on wearing your safety gear.. especially the respirator. Eye protection always of course...
Curious why you chose to use rattle cans over a brush.
I have done alot of refinishing metal patio furniture in my life and I have shaken many a can.
This time I'm going to try to brush or roll the 6 chairs .2 tables . A love seat glider and an adjustable lounger..
Been 5 plus years so this time I am going to try the non rattle can..mostly because spray paint in a specific color is sometimes hard to find..
All in all..great job..great video..ty
Thank you! 😊 I wanted to use an oil based paint since these would be used outdoors. Spray paint seemed the easiest way to go. I don’t relish the thought of hand painting chairs. In fact I’m a big sprayer in general. I have an Earlex 5500 to spray water-based paint on my other furniture.
Thank you! New subbie here. Take care
Thanks for joining me! 😍
I don't usually like these Flipper tubers.. but I did enjoy this one.. Not sure why. 😂 but your voice and background music doesn't irritate as much as others😂😂😂 must be like choosing girlfriends, sometimes you just find someone you like...
That’s hysterical. Great compliment. Thank you!!!!
😍😍😍😍 Is there anything you CAN'T do? 🥰
Yes, hahaha, quite a lot! It's been a lot of trial and error along the way and a lot of learning by mistakes.
👍👍👍❤️
Very cute!! And not much work!
Thank you! 😊
Do you have any older single sons? I have these chairs out back... Lol jk I'll get to them eventually 😅 thanks for the inspo!!
Any chance you would be willing to do an updated video to show how this faired over the last year? Wondering if it lasted after a year or not?
I no longer have it but Michelle says it’s just like it was the day I gave it to her.
be my mother in law! too much work!
Can you be my mom
