STRIPPING PAINT - vintage vanity/desk makeover ... DRIFTWOOD / BEACH INSPIRED FURNITURE FLIP
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 січ 2022
- I had NO idea what would be underneath this thick purple paint! I had to use SEVERAL methods to remove this paint, it was a mess! Chemical stripper, sanding, scraping... you name it, I tried it!
Once I FINALLY managed to strip all the paint and saw the wood underneath, I was inspired to give it a driftwood / beachy sort of treatment. It also allowed me to experiment a bit with Mr. Cornwall's Creative Colors natural pigments, which I blended into some Odie's Super Duper Everlasting Oil (and a touch of the Odie's Safer Solvent).
I used the colours Titanium and Up in Smoke, no specific recipe or amount; I was literally just experimenting with them. For the painted parts, I used Fusion Mineral Paint... a custom blend I created a while back... a light grey with a hint of green. I also added new hardware, and then used Fusion Mineral Paint's Liming Wax to lightly grey the wood AND the paint.
The resulting combination of all this is a beautiful beachy vibe, where the wood almost appears sun bleached, in a way. I LOVE how this turned out, but it's one of those projects that took much longer than expected.

I have a weird relationship to THINGS... almost as if they were alive. I feel as if you SERIOUSLY rescued this piece of furniture and its Spirit is now glowing ... soaring. What you did... is just wonderful. Thank you for persevering! You knew EXACTLY what it needed to give it new life.
Hi! I feel the same as you! It DID seem to radiate happiness, didn't it?
@@babyvaughan Yes yes!! (Glad to know I'm not alone! Thank you!)
I've had that strange "things have feelings" relationship with objects since I was very little. I know what you mean. I love watching all this old furniture get saved and healed up nice and pretty.
@@serenityelise298 Oh!!! Yay!
I relate so much to this comment :)
There was a pretty lady hidden under all that garish purple ;)
I'm usually for restoring pieces to their original state, but this is a remarkable result. You modernized the finish, but retained the historic elegance of the piece. Wonderful work.
Yes to that and it realy was ruined. There was not a good way of restoring it. Remarkable out come indeed.
Best comment!
I’m not sure about it being a “historical” piece. It’s just some old furniture. Colorful paint can be great, but just painting the whole thing purple🫠. But it looks good.
Came here to say exactly this. Absolutely gorgeous.
@@mangot589 But he didn't say it was an 'historic piece', just simply that it is of a period (probably the 30s), a period in history ... and, while not historically important, it DOES retain the elegance of that period.
This is so lovely. It is elegantly rustic without being "distressed". Thank you for not doing some "shabby chic" nonsense.
You are so welcome!
this is 5 billion times more attractive now and you really got that driftwood vibe into it.
Thanks so much! 😊
Now this is what I call an upgrade. It doesn’t fall into the purist trap of restorers who end up killing all the built up character of the piece, and also avoids being excessively on trend. It gains a respectable dignity that is modern and timeless. I can see it living on for decades blending into future trends without a problem, because it’s a piece of design. You let the piece speak to you and used the driftwood cues as inspiration. It paid off, and I’m sure the video response helped pay off the countless hours spent on it.
Siloé, what a joy to see you pop up in these comments! Your eye for interior design and vintage furniture is something I notice and admire in your videos, i'm glad to see your thoughts on this piece!
Well said! And I must agree. It can fit with so many things, it’s interesting, but not loud and trendy. Love it!
An excellent comment
Thank you so so much for this! Everything I do with every single piece is subjective, understandably, but I really try to keep the majority of them neutral - not necessarily literally, as in colour, but moreso in overall design. I want my pieces to work in various decor situations and outlast short term fads and trends, to prolong the life of a piece. At least that’s the goal. :-)
Well said!!!
I literally said “ugh” out loud when I saw the white paint revealed under the purple. Great job sticking with it because the piece is absolutely gorgeous now.
That grey with a hint of green has a name, in Europe it's called French grey and dates back to about 1931 when it was added to the standard range of British colours. By the looks of it you picked exactly the right period of paint for your little vanity table!
Thank you so much for watching!
Thx so much for sharing - i want to redo my dresser with this color.
Ha! I think it's gray with a hint of blue!!
That little vanity is saying "Thank you so much, I can finally breathe!" It absolutely beautiful. I still have my vanity dresser with mirror from when I was a kid in the 1970s. Have been wanting to refurbish but have been scared to mess with it. Watching you work your magic has given me hope I won't fail.
You can absolutely do it! Thank you so much for watching and best of luck with your piece! 😃
Unbelievable transformation! I like that you don't try to make it "factory fresh" by taking away all its character from it. Just a beautiful piece that was hidden from the world. Brava!
Thank you! Sometimes I try to restore to "like new" but other times there is so much beauty in the imperfections themselves.
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery I agree. That's why I look my age, no face lift here, I worked too hard to these lines! Lol
Yes I like this too, so surprising and characterful by the end.
WoW hard to believe this beauty was once that purple monstrosity. It's so soft and beautiful now! 🌷
I totally agree! Thanks so much for watching!
Monstrosity! 😅💯🤣 I feel like I witnessed a miracle ✨
@@KyrenaH I love purple! Just not on this. Haha :-) ❤️
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery And it was such a particular purple too hah. I can't blame the last family though, it probably let them save the object a little longer from the landfill, and I totally understand why someone with small children might not have the time to do all the painstaking beautiful work you did, particularly for something they suspect their child could end up accidentally drawing on anyway.
That is positively gorgeous. It’s like the piece is crying, “look at me, how pretty I am.” What a great job you did.
Thank you so much!
This piece would look so great in a bedroom in a rustic style beach house! I love how you transformed it from a horrible purple to a stylish and timeless piece!
Very beachy
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Yes like in mine
This has to be one of the most unique finishes you've done so far and it's absolutely gorgeous! I'm so in love with this piece; maybe because I live in California and I can see this fitting in so well with the coastal design aesthetic. Another amazing transformation!
That’s why I love it too! It reminds me of the ocean, which always makes me happy.
Every time I pick up a piece of furniture that cries out for refinishing rather than paint, I ask myself 'What Would Angie Do?" :) You never miss--gorgeous, as always!
Thank you kindly!
You have a wonderful artist's eye for your restorations and masterful skills, you create these works of art that grace a variety of decor genres! Your video quality is professional while your communication is engaging and educational, I sincerely appreciate the time and energy you have put into them!
Wow! Thank you so much for watching! I'm so glad you're enjoying my content!
Yet another project that shows off your incredible range! Well done!❤️
I totally agree. Often I skip to the end , but there is something right from the beginning that catches me and watch the whole video.
Got that beachy feel! Way to go saving something that most people would throw!
Thank you very much! 😀
What a gorgeous transformation!
I am particularly impressed with how you lovingly put moisture back into the wooden drawers, and were so careful to preserve the master's mark inside.
On your final reveal, when you opened the drawer, the color and brightness of the woodgrain made me gasp!
I backed up the video to look again. Your paint job on the drawer front did not bleed over the interior edge. The edges were crisp and clean.
You are a superior craftswoman!
I would consider highlighting this project as an often featured example of your amazing talent and skill.
It's value in marketing and showcasing your talent will yield many times more for your investment than whatever you sold it for!
Thank you very much Marie! 😊
Absolutely beautiful lines on this piece - I love the art deco plinth base. This little lady has been rescued from her Barney the Dinosaur nightmare & is now relaxing on the beach!
Thank you for the inspiration xxx
You're so welcome Lois! 😀
What a great piece for a beachside property. I've watched other refinishing presenters and I have to say your items look far more professionally done than some other presenters.
Wow, thank you!
It's actually soothing to look at now.
From jarring purple to tranquil.
Thank you so much for watching!
Just beautiful! I love what you did with Odie's Oil. I clearly see your driftwood inspiration. Even the hardware gives me strong coastal/nautical vibes- but elegant early mid-century ocean liner chic not beach bum bar kitsch. I hope this piece sold for a lot more than you were expecting. It is such a good look. I'd love to see a sequel where you recreate this finish on another piece someday, hopefully with less stripping and scraping required for your sake. You definitely transformed the purple monster into a sleek ocean treasure.
"Mid century ocean liner chic" is the perfect description. Remarkable result isn't it?
Ocean liner Art deco chic, yes, saw an art deco wardrobe in America for $600,and here in the uk at the time the wardrobe similar would be £40-£60 I was a little shocked.no idea about resale currently for art deco.I love it,but Mid 20th century seems to be the current fashion.
Thank you so much!
Years ago, I had a vanity exactly like this. I found it on the side of the road and literally dragged it home. I never got around to refinishing it. Your transformation of this piece is amazing, I almost wish I had it still. Almost- that was a lot of work.
Thank you so much for watching!
I like the purple, but I would never have painted the piece that color. I love how it turned out! Excellent job, as always. 👍😉🤗
I have no issue with the purple at all, to each their own. It was the layers upon layers upon layers that blew my mind. Thank you so much for watching!
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery 💜
wow, phenomenal job refinishing that Barney-purple monster!!
Haha! Thanks so much!
Ok I usually do not comment! but I have to say "Great Job" as a fellow furniture refinisher I believe I would have set it on the curb with a free sign. I did not expect such a gorgeous transformation!
Thank you very much!
I absolutely adore this piece. The wood has come out such a beautiful soft colour and put with the sage green it sets it off so well. I know it wasn't the easiest piece with all that awful paint lol but it now looks amazing and another thing saved from landfill yay. Xx
the transformative power of a good finish.
Thank you so much! 😊
Beachy art deco. Gives me autumnal 1920s Hamptons
Thanks so much!
Angie you're amazing! Most people would just paint over the whole thing and have a new mess, but you take such care to strip and sand - so professional and a wonderful rescue!
Thank you so much for watching!
You may not start out with a hidden gem but you make thoughtful decisions to make your projects look beautiful and rejuvenated. Thank you and take care.
What a lovely piece for someone's beach-inspired house.
Thank you very much! 😀
The use of double knobs for drawer pulls seemed strange at first, but whoever "refinished" this piece last probably couldn't find replacement drawer pulls to fit the holes, and didn't want to mess with filling the old holes and drilling new ones.
And, I 💯 agree how satisfying it is watching old paint bubble up after applying stripper 😄 Your videos bring back many fond memories of projects that Dad and I refinished 🥲
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Beautiful job 👏 I always admire the time and effort you put into each and every piece. You have so much attention to detail and the patience you have to work on a piece is unreal! Excellent job and it looks amazing!!! I hope you get a lot for it to make up for the time you put into it.
Thank you so much! It was definitely a combination of love and tenacity that got me through this one, haha.
Beautiful job! I love how you are not opting for just painting but restoring as much of the wood finish as possible. You have rescued a gorgeous piece from the garbage dump and gave it a new life. Beautiful job. Absolutely love it!
Refreshing to see a return to wood grain instead of the faux finishes that are flooding the market.
Thanks for watching!
I remember in the 90s in San Francisco, these 1930/40s vanities and dressers were everywhere. I found mine on the curb. All I ever did to that bureau was put black paint on the trim, and left the wood plain; the trim had been painted a pea green color. As soon as I saw the thumbnail of your video, though, I thought to myself, I could easily have been friends with the person who painted the desk purple! It looked 1000% familiar to me from the days when broke young people could live in SF with 7 roommates and 3 cats. So, ty for the nostalgia.
Mostly, though, I also am here to say how much I respect your design choices and work ethic. I really am blown away by your channel! I didn’t expect to like this one - I lived through some design eras that left me feeling callous - but I love it. Great work!
Yay! I'm really glad you like how it turned out. Thank you so much for watching and I'm glad I could bring back some memories for you. 🙂
Waterfall Art Deco furniture is my go to for flips. Very versatile, cleans up well and it’s old enough to be “vintage/antique” but mass produced enough the antique purists don’t have a cow if you paint it. Beautiful work.
Thank you so much for watching!
I just want to say that even though I love a lot of channels, you are extremely unique in the choices you make. I don’t think I’ve seen one video of yours that I don’t LOVE! ✨
Thank you very much for your kind words! Much appreciated!
I'm only seeing this project for the first time. I just wanted to say what a nice job. I'm convinced you could turn Barney into a T-REX.
Haha! I'd definitely give it a go!!
Very beautiful, I don’t get tired of watching you make these old things beautiful again!
I'm glad you like it Diana!
What a beautiful finished piece!
That purple reminds me of my first experience using paint stripper. When I was a kid, my family fixed up our home for sale, including the kitchen cabinets. The plan was to strip the dozen or so layers of paint and then repaint them. We removed several layers of various off-whites, then a layer of avocado green, then a layer of purple very similar to that purple, then a few more layers of off-whites. The wood underneath was beautiful, so we stained it and finished it rather than painting it.
But the idea of a kitchen painted with either that green or that purple still makes me shake my head.
You and your family were tenacious! Good work!
That sounds like a LOT of work Darin! Thank you so much for watching!
I have no idea how you continue to create the most beautiful pieces out of almost literal trash. We've been looking at a vanity to refurbish for my daughter and this piece is absolute goals.
I'm so glad I could give you some ideas! Thank you so much for watching!
Wow, what a nightmare of a job. You have the patience of a saint. Your final reveal is stunning.
Thank you so much!
Great job. Reminiscent of sand and greenish sea foam and dry seaweed. I am from Florida. The piece speaks our coastal language. Thank you for the treat.
You're so welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
I've been working on a solid oak kitchen table with exactly the same issues. 3 weeks in..stripping, steel wool, scraping and sanding. Finally down to bare wood, and I'm immediately thinking driftwood finish with a white wax.
I love it! Thank you so much for watching!
I really like how this turned out! I think the desk looks so dignified now!
I know what you mean when you say you're past the point of no return. I've done paying jobs of all sorts and some of them turned out that way but to me there is satisfaction in just improving and repurposing something, so once in a while. I admire you for sticking with it. Still watching the scraping part. "I will never get this time back." Hahaha.
Yes, the "driftwood" feel really came through at the end. Excellent choice of hardware too. It was well worth the effort IMO. I'd be happy to live with that piece of furniture.
Thank you very much!
I had a similar desk in my room when I was a child...some 62 years ago. it was old then. AND it was very dark. Very soft and beachy tones. Nice in the dark of winter.
Very cool! Thank you for watching!
What a huge job! Beautiful turn out. ❤️
Thanks so much! 😊
I'd say you nailed the driftwood idea, and the paint makes me think of sea foam. Driftwood and sea foam. A beautiful piece. ❤
Thank you so much! 😊
Wow what a transformation the Driftwood really makes the difference on that piece of furniture
Thank you so much for watching!
Luuuuv the end result. If you feel like giving up on a piece just remember you serve as inspiration/teacher for others!
Thanks for watching!
Always a pleasure to watch you reveal the hidden beauty. Thank you!
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
from the start condition i couldn’t anticipate this result. the final colors and textures make a great combination.
Thank you so much for watching!
Worth the wait, it's a grown-up piece now.
Thank you very much for watching! 😀
Angie, you are a true artist, that's all I can say. This is spectacular!
Agreed!
Thank you kindly!
So glad you didn't give up it's beautiful. Love the way you recycle you do a fantastic job no short cuts 👏
Thank you! 😊
Wow! What a transformation. The end result is stunning! Very lucky person will own that.
Thank you so much!
I’m glad your labour of love paid off in the end. It’s gorgeous.
Thank you so much! 🙂
What a great transformation! I am in awe of your work and inspired approach. The paint color was super in contrast to the wood. I would never have thought of your end result. Super duper!
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Wow!! This turned out amazing!! I’m just getting into furniture refinishing, refurbishing, etc. & I LOVE your work! I’ve been binge watching your videos. ❤
Awesome! I'm so glad you found the channel and welcome! I hope you can find some inspiration and knowledge here. 🙂
Angie is THE Best!! I've not seen anyone who gives as much as she does to each piece she works on (and then, she is brilliant in the making of the videos, with just the right balance of each component!).
I specialize in historical wood restoration & refinish for a living. Here's my tip: throw away all your liquid stripper! Get a Speed heater Cobra infrared paint stripper. Clean, a fraction of the time of traditional strippers and removes multiple layers of paint and/primer down to the bare wood in literally three to five seconds! Incredible tool. You do fantastic work, this tool will take you to another skill level
Stunning. “As you go” turns out to be a great guide.
Thank you so much! 😊
I’ve watched this twice, and love what you did. Your image of driftwood was perfect, as the wood colors have the varying tones of beige and gray. The paint color is most definitely a beach color. Overall, the piece has the tranquil mood of a foggy beach morning. So glad you didn’t give up on this.
Me too! So glad you like how it turned out. Thanks so much for watching!
Such hard work!! 😳😍 We fellow restoration folks appreciate your talents and incredible efforts even more than those who don't embark on the Herculean challenge of complete makeovers 🥰👍
Thanks for watching!
You've worked an absolute miracle. It's just so very special.
Thank you so much!! 😊
You are the most patient person on earth. I love this channel. I’m so thankful I found it. I have an old secretary desk I’m trying to figure out what to do with.
Awe, thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Truly sensational - this is a miracle restoration!!! Your patience and labor of love are incredible 👏👏👏
Thank you very much!
You performed a real miracle, sister! ❤ Awesome work!
Thank you! 🤗
This is gorgeous and so relatable to see someone on the struggle bus!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
!what a way to save something i was sure could absolutely not be saved! gorgeous!
Thank you so much! 😊
I love how you have a 'vision' for how a piece will end up, and how the end result is always a thousand times better than what you started with. Also love the new hardware -- it's a perfect fit!
Thank you very much!
You are so very talented!! ❤️This piece highlights that for what you were able to make it into!!
Glad you liked it!! :-)
I love this piece. New life for a classic!❤
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Has a real "Miami Art Deco" feel to it. I know so many people who would adore having a piece like that in their home!
Thank you so much for watching!
Absolutely incredible! Most definitely a labor of love ❤️
Yes it was! Definitely! haha
That is so cool! It really does have a “beachy” feel to it. Thanks so much. 😄
You're very welcome! Thank YOU for watching!
WOW, love how you modernized an old piece.👍⭐️
Thank you so much!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. THE HARD WORK PAID OFF!!! LOVE IT!!
Thank you very much!
OMG That is gorgeous! I have two waterfall desks in my garage to redo and I'm loving the inspiration!!!!
Thank you kindly Michelle!
Oh boy Angie! I would of toss that thing out! You just did a miracle on an old piece of furniture! Bravo! Christine 🇨🇦
Thank you so much Christine!
You Resurrected the peace! Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much for watching!
Perfect marriage of wood and paint. Wonderful colours. Very sleek.
Thank you very much!
The desk came out beautiful. Your custom color is gorgeous. I'd love my kitchen cabinets that color. Well done as always 😍
Great work! ❤ The finished piece looks modern, beautiful, and elegant. Your video reminds me of a restoration Dad did (about 30 years ago) to a piece of furniture my Grandmother bought. The piece had three layers of paint: pink, green, and white. Dad removed the paint, sanded the piece and finished the original wood with a dark varnish. He also added new hardware. Thank you for sharing!
While I understand not every piece makes profit, I sincerely appreciate you sharing your expertise and keeping things out of landfills. This is beautiful.
I appreciate that! Thank you so much!
Wow! Hideous purple to elegant driftwood! Fantastic!!
Thanks so much!
I usually don't like flipped furniture but this turned out really beautiful. You have a nice eye for things. I love everything about this.
Thank you very much Belle!
I LOVE how much care and work you put into this piece! I'm sorry it was so MUCH work, and I appreciate all your attention to the detail! Wow! (Well done you!).
OMG!!!! The END RESULT! That is AMAZING! I am so impressed. You did a fantastic job. I WANT that piece!
It's B E A U T I F U L ! You should be proud of your work.
Thanks so much!
Your perseverance paid off. Man, it's beautiful! Would be great if the purple painter could see it now.
Thanks so much for watching Jean!
This turned out absolutely beautifully. Thank you so much. Remember though, there's nothing wrong with painting purple!
You're welcome. To be clear - I have no issue with people liking purple. Different tastes make the world go around. I have an issue with that many coats of finish being applied one after the other on a piece. Strip, scrape or sand it back before moving forward.
This is so gorgeous. It could literally just be a feature piece in someone's home.
Thank you so much!
Wow just remarkable!! The way you restored this piece and highlighted it’s best features. You brought this back to life 🤩
Thank you very much!
This was a much needed video as I tackle a stripping piece that is brutal. Seeing you persevere and come up against the nasty parts has inspired me to keep going. Thank you!
You're very welcome! Best of luck with your piece! 😊
Loving the bleached wood look. Another great save.😊
Thank you! 😊
I love the color that it came out to be! You got it spot on with that beachy vibe that you were going for. Another stunning transformation! Great job!!
Thank you so much!
Fantastic choices!
I really like the foggy sage color of the paint you chose. It does go really well with the bare wood. The pulls are so sleek and complement the piece, modernizing it!
Thank you very much!
You saved this piece. It’s such a calming piece of furniture now.
I'm so glad you like it! Thank you so much for watching!
Great reinvention of this piece of furniture. Modern, sleek, wonderful color choice! 17:50 17:52
