Rethinking the Equinox 800 for Nugget Detecting

  • In this video I am using the Minelab Equinox 800 in "gold 1", sensitivity "16 to 18", Multi IQ, and auto tracking. Rest of the settings are stock. It amazes me what this little beast if a VLF detector will do in hot ground (minerals) and finding the smallest bits of gold for the operator. Beautiful area with lots of Agate and other cool stuff just laying on the ground.

    Got to hunt for a few hours south of the 10 this week and this was the first time I used the Nox for nugget hunting and let me say the hot rocks were killing me! Each swing is hit 15 different signals all around 10-14 and those were the hot rocks. I eventually notched out from 10-15 just so I could consentrate. I know that’s not the right way but at least I stated pulling small little pieces of lead. No gold though... do you have a tip on not being overwhelmed by all those hot rocks without notching them out?

    I see you are using the 6" coil have you used the 15" coil and how do you compare the extra coverage the 15" would give compared to the extra sensitivity of the 6" or is it just a case of 'horses for courses'. In the ideal world I would like both but having a budget is forcing me to go for one or the other atm. Thanks for your videos it's great to see some one who really knows their stuff, I've been swinging a detector since The Garret Groundhog A2B was state of the art, that's a long time and when I'm not learning from you I'm agreeing with you. Wow, that is one sensitive machine. Looks like I want a 6" but I haven't ever used a metal detector before so, I admittedly need some experience before I go making any decisions like that. I am in the Mojave, north east Mojave to be more exact, so my terrain isn't to much different than yours, I don't believe. Mine is the 11" and getting into tighter spots in a wash or something does look like having that option would be more beneficial.

    Bill, I have been watching your channel for a few weeks and I enjoy, even though I will never end up in AZ. Question, when you said you are rethinking the Equinox 800 in this video, is that a Yes, because you like it a lot, of a No because you waste time finding really tiny pieces of trash? Some yes some no, because the 11 inch coils "sees" more area it can be less stable and miss some of the tiny targets the 6 inch can focus easily on. Just the nature of the beast and the same with most all detectors.

    Another great video! Do you recommend the 6in or 11in for gold detecting? We went out for a short hunt to a gold field no luck unfortunately. Had a few what seemed like good targets with a VDI of 2-4 but then when we dug a little they changed to 12-13 or would be in the minus? If they go into the minus is that just a hot rock/iron?

    • @NUGGETSHOOTER
      @NUGGETSHOOTER  5 років тому

      6 inch has been the best so far, but also found gold with the 11 though it was noisier due to larger size. I turned down the sensitivity and all was well. I use a PI for deep gold so the 6 inch coil fits great in shallow stuff

      My NOX finds tiny little nuggets.
      Gold mode 1, change to multi-freq, sensitivity about 18 to 20.
      When the TID reads 1, or 2, and the signal has a repeating zip zip.
      The gold or lead is smaller than a grain. Depth, surface to 3 inches.
      Dig thin layers and rescan, it is easy to dig to much at once and bury your target in your tailings.
      TID's for gold can be any number!
      IMO the TID on gold seems to indicate size, i.e. big number, big gold.

    • @NUGGETSHOOTER
      @NUGGETSHOOTER  5 років тому

      No David it does not compare you are correct and the 800 was not meant to compete with the CTX as it was meant to fill a nique. But the CTX will not work in the soil out here in the desert for nuggets and is very unstable with the higher sensitivity needed for small gold nuggets (yes I have one), but is an amazing deep seeking coin/relic detector. The EQX 800 however is designed to nugget hunt very well and at a third of the price for those not needing or wanting a more advanced coin/relic detector. However the CTX 30-30 is a outstanding detector in it's environment and hard to beat....

      I have some gold flakes in glass jars, and a ctx. I think I will take my whites dfx, {which has a prospect mode) my gold bug pro, and the ctx on a tarp and see which one sees what. I find it hard to believe the ctx cannot find gold, it can find my scoop 3 feet away without aiming at it. granted that's big steel and not a pin head sized nugget. but we do have hot rocks on maine beaches I've found plenty of them. unless I win a Nox 800 I've only got the ctx to hunt gold with. I chose it because it is water proof and was the best on the market. problem is it is smarter then I am and I will spend the rest of my life trying to figure it out!

      As I have said it is a suitable gold detector for those wanting to do both types of hunting gold/coins but a good gold nugget detector is the best bet for gold nuggets. Much also depends on soil mineralization , etc.

    I liked your video... but a suggestion would be to quit dragging stuff across the surface of your detector... in the audio it can be hard to hear the scrapes of that... vs the bloops of the machine.
