Got an SUV with a factory two tone paint job on the bumpers and detachable lower trims. So I'll only be dipping about 2/5ths of the vehicle's surface with the intention of letting the dip coat get scratched up by brush offroad instead of my original paint. I'll probably lay it on a bit thicker with that in mind. I'd only need about half a pro kit worth of product and since I can and probably will remove the parts I want to dip and walk around them while I'm spraying, I'm pretty confident I can get the rattle cans to do a good enough job. But hey, good hustle.

I've used cans and it turned out ok but I would prefer the kit. Less work, better quality, less time and a solid investment if you want to redip in the future years. Also more colour options.
I'm guessing that putting Plasti Dip in 56 metal cans with propellant costs a LOT more than producing 4 one gallon cans. So are the spray cans underpriced or are the gallon cans overpriced? I'm going with the latter ;-)
Im a broke kid in Florida and decided to PlastiDip my 01 Blazer black and only used 8 cans with one coat. I didn't know about DYC at the time. I'm still peeling dip off of my SUV, and it looks ugly as hell. Not only was it rough in texture and spotty but it took a couple of hours to do it with 2 people. The only good part of it was I got to spend time with friends working on a car but would rather have spent the time fixing my truck instead of ruining it.
Rattle cans are best suited for any surface that's about the size of your door to the gas cap, say ~6" or less. The result is a smooth surface with no striping going on. Try it on the trunk lid or hood and you bet it'll look terrible. The only issue with using a sprayer is getting the dip/air ratio correct. Too much air and the dip will practically dry in mid-air before making contact with the auto body. I've been encouraging people to have their cherished vehicles dipped (even clear matte coat) but they get all defensive. Of course now these same people are experiencing clear coat blemishes and scratches due to negligence. =\
first i though dipping your car is freaking stupid, but now i think its a good investment to protect your new cars and a little bit of your rims, but if you hit the curb game over.
I have a feeling I will be buying one of your kits in the near future. I started investigating covering neodymium magnets for submersion into hydrogen fuel generators and now I'm learning how to use PlastiDip my entire car. It's a '97 and it needs it bad.
I decided to rattle can plasti dip my car, and i really wish i had just spent the money for the kit instead. I have rattle can dipped my rims many times as well as emblems, grills, taillights , etc so i figured how different could it be doing the whole car? But come to find out It is extremely difficult to get the paint even on such large flat areas because cans just don’t spray a large enough smooth enough spray fan. And exactly like dude in this video said, when you are trying to do your hood and the can is angled downward it starts to sputter creating an uneven coat and then often times dip builds up on the tip and drips onto the car creating a bump that is impossible to smooth out. In short, cans are great for dipping smaller parts like emblems and rims. But i honestly wasted my money and time buying 30 + cans considering I’m just going to buy the kit and do it all over again anyway. I love plasti dip. I will continue to use it for sure. Now that I’m going to have my own sprayer and stuff it will make it cheaper to dip my car another color later. Trial and error i guess. Now we know. Haha.
That pro car kit would be double the price or more by the time it gets shipped to Hawaii, so rattle can was my only option for my jeep. I can't wait to get off this rock so I can get some good dip on my jeep...rattle can is a pain and it doesn't turn out as nice either.
im not sure why more body shops dont use plasti dip to train employees with . if they mess up a panel just peel it off. also some customers Ive seen in the past come in with a color in a magazine and say i want this color . even if you tell them the color will not look good on their car they will not listen. id rather them have a 400$ removable mistake vs a 10k real custom paint mistake ...lol
90% of the time, paint mess ups come from improper body work. That's usually where the 10k price tag comes from. Not so much the actual paint job. Beginner painters usually start at maco where paint jobs usually cost like 300$, by the time they move to a good shop where they do charge 10k for nice paint jobs, they would theoretically have the experience and skills.

I did a 1997 Silverado with about 10 cans, and a fox body mustang with 8ish cans, both came out fine. Truck was dark red and mustang was black to begin with, so that helped. Would definitely need more to do a lighter colored car though
This was really annoying. I just want to do my hood and my roof and my trunk, what is that like 6 cans? 40 bucks?. I do not want a 400$ set. I don’t even want a sprayer. Did anyone here have issues doing the hood or top like he said you would without a sprayer?
+Luh Robert & T-Slim I didn't have the best luck with the nozzle. the one i had at least would pool up around the bottom of the nozzle and eventually spray a big blob onto my car :/
Ok I'm not a dipper, but I dipped my wheels and for I can say out of experience (paint jobs) 50 cans of Plasti dip is just exaggerating. I respect your job but at least be honest. I have a merc a180 and I'm about to dip it with cans as I have tested the reliability of 2 cans for my hood, and it does *peels* off. From what I think; (Hatchback / mat black / 3-5 layers / no clear ) 2,5 cans per door panel 3 cans for hood 2 cans front bumper 2 cans rear bumper 3,5 cans roof +2 extra cans because the last dip solution in your can doesn't spray evenly and it's not worth to spray anymore. So I think you easily can dip your hatchback with 23 cans max, keeping in my you spray your first layer 60% fill and the next 3-4 layers wet on wet (make it evenly, shine. That's the key to be able to peel it off, you don't spray to get that high gloss, you won't be able to peel it off). If you did buy 50 cans please sell those 25 cans to me 😂. This should work out
Thanks a lot for all this great info, definitely going to order from you guys to dip my new bike. Totally unrelated, you're in great shape brother, keep it up!! Regards.
I don't care if it's peelable. There is a spray to remove it or just leave it on, plus a spray gun and air compressor is an extra 200$ or 300$ . I'm gonna spray can because if it's not smoother paint thinner smooths it. Plus I seen people actually use cans and win
If you have to buy a sprayer and you're only going one time then aerosol could be the way also if I dip my call and six months down the track I want to change the color can I clean and spray over the old dip or do I have to remove it and recoat great videos thanks for the advice
Congrats on giving us (the public) intelligent and helpful videos. I've just watched a bunch of your vids and nothing comes across as a hard sell, just helpful information.Do you have dealers in Australia that I can get your product from?
What if i put 2 coats of black, and 3 coats of glossifier only on the tail lights, but i want it more shiny, as opposed to dull...will i have to peel it off and redo it?? Or just add more coats of glossifier over it??
im sorry in advance because you guys probably get this question a lot how long is it until the California Compliant dyc kit comes out? Ive been dying to dip my infiniti G35 ever since i got it 4 years ago. Thank you
If you did a dip your motorbike kit then I'd be interested... obviously it would take less paint than a car if say it was a full faired motorbike. So I am curious how you would go about calculating how many aerosol cans you would need for such a project... you could halve it but I still get the sense it would be too much. EDIT: I take that back you do a kit... but what type of bike? Fully faired... half faired? Naked?
I did two motorbike wheels and used 2 red and 1 copper for a light dusting which used half the can. The motorbike kit equates to 14 cans of a solid color...
Wowzers thx for showing me what I came here to see from the title. Yes now I understand, a bigger number is in fact bigger than a smaller number. Maths.
Sorry, only just now saw your comment. Yeah, it's been a couple years since I did it, but I'll try to answer to the best of my memory. Honestly was a pretty simple process, just time-consuming if you want to DIY the right way. I've since sold it and gotten a Challenger, but last I'd seen it, it didn't have a single peel spot or even chip in it even still, about 3 years after I'd sprayed it. And it was a 2001 model
I wouldnt say 56 cans..... I did a car with 24 cans -2 gallons about 8 coats thick granted it was a 2 door car but still.....i definitely agree though using an HVLP gun is something that should be done for sure
I have a black truck and wanted to do the lower part of my doors. My concern is, that being black on black , will the heat from the sun. Will this weaken the strength of the plasti dip? Will it blow off if I power wash my truck? I am doing this out of spray cans.
My problem is that where I live (Melbourne Australia) it is illegal to spray with an air gun without a booth. The extra cost of hiring or setting up a booth would make in unfeasible to use the proper spray. I was hoping that there would be tips for someone like me to follow to be able to spray a car using rattle cans.
Hail all thanks for the good content. How much do i need for plastidipping hood, roof and luggage/back side of my Fiesta Ghia 2000 (also known Flair) ? Thanks!

I have a merc a180 and I'm about to dip it with cans as I have tested the reliability of 2 cans for my hood, and it does *peels* off. From what I think;
(Hatchback / mat black / 3-5 layers / no clear )
2,5 cans per door panel
3 cans for hood
2 cans front bumper
2 cans rear bumper
3,5 cans roof
+2 extra cans because the last dip solution in your can doesn't spray evenly and it's not worth to spray anymore.
This should work out
I forgot the trunk, but that's because i barely have anything to spray on the trunk (w169). Don't forget to include I believe 2 cans for your trunk!
I used the plasti dip matte black cans on my motorcycle and it came out looking like sand paper.
Thanks a lot for all this great info, definitely going to order from you guys to dip my new bike. Totally unrelated, you're in great shape brother, keep it up!! Regards.
plastidip cans are also great dumbbells
xD
good and honest video. there should be more businesses to work that way.
I don't care if it's peelable. There is a spray to remove it or just leave it on, plus a spray gun and air compressor is an extra 200$ or 300$ . I'm gonna spray can because if it's not smoother paint thinner smooths it. Plus I seen people actually use cans and win
MichiMind you don’t need a compresser?
If you have to buy a sprayer and you're only going one time then aerosol could be the way also if I dip my call and six months down the track I want to change the color can I clean and spray over the old dip or do I have to remove it and recoat great videos thanks for the advice
And in Canada, this cans cost TRIPPLE! Already nearly 1200 dollars just for the cans.
I'd get that trigger attachment you can put on, and save my fingers :)
basically a sneak diss to anyone saying they can dip their car with aerosol cans rather than buy the kit lol.. nice job
Wowzers thx for showing me what I came here to see from the title. Yes now I understand, a bigger number is in fact bigger than a smaller number. Maths.
Plastidip is an imported product in my country. It would cost almost 40% more to Plastidip the car than do a high quality vinyl...
If you spray wrap your car how long will it take.? Also will the winter salt or snow ruin it?
$600 in spray cans? Im good
what the math pro
+FecalMattur i did my Lexus gs300 for 120$ spray can
Sorry, only just now saw your comment.
@@mctbuilds8980 did it come out clean?
@@angelmx5734 came out great it's on my channel
i think you can make a video on how you workout too mate.....
My hands and fingers were hurting just from spraying my wheels I can't even imagine the pain you'd be in after spraying a whole car
Well luckily they have an attachable trigger now made specifically for plasti dip cans.... Sheesh I can't image doing it without them. ☺
Plasti dip doesn't ship to Canada. So cans are $23/can. 56 cans would cost $1,288.
Let's not forget to mention that over a HUNDRED oz of leftover product is sitting in all of those spray cans
I wouldnt say 56 cans..... I did a car with 24 cans -2 gallons about 8 coats thick granted it was a 2 door car but still.....i definitely agree though using an HVLP gun is something that should be done for sure
LiveToRide a 2 door car??? What was it
apache Banksy it was a crappy old Hyundai Accent
Haha I thought I was only gunna need like 8 cans
you should really change the title for this video to plasti dip math class
That C100 is wicked!
I have a black truck and wanted to do the lower part of my doors. My concern is, that being black on black , will the heat from the sun. Will this weaken the strength of the plasti dip? Will it blow off if I power wash my truck? I am doing this out of spray cans.
Not going to lie that guy is great I was just about to buy all that spray but I’m going to check out the site instead
lol fonzie absolutely destroyed the 19 year old ricer dude who expected to spray paint his car 😂😂😂😂😂
i still did it
I am actually considering patchwork each panel a different color...and then giving it to my niece.
lol i did it the hard way i went the can route first then i got the spray gun kit later and loved it
Dude Great video i feel that this was needed for so many people. keep it up homie
would cost $1120 in canada! Cans are $20 each in store
If I'm understanding right, plastidip is saying their spray cans are completely worthless and no one should buy them? lol
This guy is lowkey savage on spray cans, damn.
when is the best time of the year to dip your and what type of whether should we look for when spraying a car.
$380 for 56 cans - not where I live! A single can of Plasti-dip retails for $19.99 locally. So, 56 cans would run just under $1300 after taxes.
+Brad Twaddell i think youd be fine if you sprayed outside... mighty car mods spray painted the top half of a pathfinder with black spraypaint
I'm thinking on gun metal gray on my truck I really like the look using aresol cans
i hope cali gallons come soon
Hail all thanks for the good content. How much do i need for plastidipping hood, roof and luggage/back side of my Fiesta Ghia 2000 (also known Flair) ? Thanks!
