  • In this video, I show you how to spray PlastiDip with both aerosol can and a professional grade HVLP gun. Everyone can spray an aerosol can, but not everyone knows how to spray it while leaving a perfectly smooth finish. By the end of this video, hopefully you will have the skills to do exactly that.

    Great video dude. You really expanded on the spraying "wet" concept. I was definitely spraying too lightly, but when it comes out of the sprayer, it's "wet" so I didn't really think there was a difference. Someone just saying "you have to put down wet coats" doesn't really mean anything to a noob like myself since it's already a wet product! Thanks for breaking it down!!

    great stuff, Milan thanks.....one question.....if I already have texture in my PlastiDip wheels, can I continue with wet coats to get a smooth finish, or do I need to peel off all the old stuff and start from scratch?

    I followed this procedure (after years of light coat recommendation videos) and I can honestly say I'm VERY impressed with the results on my 06 eclipse front bumper. Thanks sick dips! I learned something new watching this vid. Side note: I did my bumper the same last year with light coats and took it off after a couple months because I wasn't fully satisfied. QUICK TIP: spray the edges of the tape a couple minutes (maybe 1) before removing the tape, makes for some crispy lines. Careful with the dust. Good video, well documented. Thanks again for the help

  • @WeebsLifeBalance
    @WeebsLifeBalance 7 років тому +2

    I think its all depend on the surface you spary. If you spraying on flat surface of course this technique is better. But if you spray on rim with many edges and corners then thick coat will build up runs and drip on that part.

    LOVE the video!!!!! Other videos I’ve watched gives just the opposite advice put it on REALLY lightly in 20 coats! Yours looked WAYYYYY nicer!
    I’m gonna subscribe to your channel so I’m sorry if you’ve already did a video on this but have you used their “Glossifier”? I wanna paint my car but I don’t really want it to be a matte finish.

  • @nikolaiiaksenov
    @nikolaiiaksenov 9 років тому

    Idk, it doesn't seem like it it will be all that durable because you did such thick coats.. Don't you want the first cost to be light then next coat a bit thicker and so on?

    • @SickDips
      @SickDips  9 років тому

      +Breaking rc It doesn't matter if you spray 30 super light coats or 5 super thick coats. 1 can of plastidip is 1 can of plastidip. Same thing goes for gallons. It doesn't matter the amount of coats you do, it goes by the volume of plastidip you spray. I hope this makes sense :)

    • @nikolaiiaksenov
      @nikolaiiaksenov 9 років тому

      +Sick Dips oh that does make sense, I'm just confused why people say don't do thick coats, they always say do the first coat light, then build up from there, and I watched this video before I painted my front grill and I have to admit it was very smooth as far as plasti dip goes. :) you can check out the pic on my Instagram page @breaking_rc

    There is a bit of an art to working with this stuff....as I'm starting to find out 🤣🤣
    I did the mirror caps on my car yesterday....deliberated removing the caps first but as at least one of the caps has some broken clips I was concerned if break them getting them off so decided to do them in situ.
    Masked them off using proper 3M tape and also masked off what I thought would prevent over spray.......needless to say it turned out a bit disastrous.
    The weather cooled, there was a light breeze and I began to run out of light, I didn't know about warming the cans either so the product went on too thickly and left a mottled finish. Also the fallout from the spray went all over the car so its now covered in over spray and plastidust....apart from where I masked off. I know it will come off but not looking forward to having to do it....might try the WD40 method if it proves too difficult.
    I am going to warm the can and add 2 or three thick coats on each cap (assuming the remaining can will go the distance) and hopefully will then have a smooth finish. I will then add glossifier to finish it off at some point.
    So advice to anyone trying this.....
    If in colder condition/climate warm the cans (102f/38c about right), it doesnt atomise properly for a smooth finish otherwise.
    Be sure to mask up properly.....the stuff literally gets everywhere particularly if there is any sort of breeze. Again it's not the problem it would be with regular paint but it will save you some cleanup effort afterwards.
    If you are going to go the rattle can route consider getting a pistol grip for your cans, at least for the final coats. Having to press the nozzle whilst workable isnt comfortable and I dont think contributes to a decent finish.
    Really and truthfully, I probably shouldn't have cheapskated and just gotten two new caps and had them painted but if I can get a decent final finish and it lasts a few years I'll be happy.

    Problem number 1: Spraying horizontally. That's how you get drips, spitting and run out of pressure with 1/4th of the can left.

      How do you spray the hood?

    • @cilvagold
      @cilvagold 6 років тому +1

      You spray a car (hood) using a HVLP gun. A gun doesn't have the horizontal/vertical problem. You're kinda stupid if you're gonna dip your car using a aerosol can.

    • @billybobjoe198
      @billybobjoe198 6 років тому +5

      Cilvagold you can't do a wet first coat like this guy did in the video on a vertical sheet of metal. It'll run. Even Fonzi from DYC doesn't tell you to do a wet first coat. A wet coat on bare metal won't adhere properly. You can only do wet coats as follow up coats because the solvents in the sprayed medium melt the exiting fresh substrate and give it hold. This kid got fish eyes in his first coat and he solved them by just laying it on heavier. That's not going to have good adhesion.

  • @GanglandNewsAu

  • @carlygray2317

    But wouldn't this just run on a vertical surface? It can self-level on a horizontal and flat surface. I don't see how it could on a vertical.

  • @Bob-Bob-Bob-KC2AGB
    @Bob-Bob-Bob-KC2AGB 4 роки тому

    REALLY??? "It doesn't matter what you use," to apply the plastic-dip.... I can only say that you obviously don't know what your talking about, --- as the evidence is even apparant in the aerosol-can coat to that put on by the spray gun. Despite that it's a matte- or flat-black, when it comes to the truth and reality of applications, the 'flatter' you can get the paint to lay down initially, the better the finish you'll have, period.
    To say that it doesn't matter what is used for application, and just try to compensate by or with 'wet-coating', is seemingly deliberately ignorant of well and long known knowledge that - that is just not true. Sure you can "flow-coat" a horizontal panel (and even a verticle one too); however such technique is meant (stating liberally), to level out imperfections created or caused by 'slight' improper gun settings, improper mixing of coating, improper application technique, or surface prep imperfections, and NOT a means by which you can fix-all, much less a way to use as an application method at all.
    That's especially so with the absence of a "tack-coat," that of which you so adamantly explain will provide the basis for a "texture[ed]" result....that of which if you knew what you were talking about then you'd know that after a fast track coat you can apply a subsequent heavier, and even heavier third coat, in order to let the paint or coating to 'flow-out' or level.
    Perhaps you should be more learned before representing your hypothesis on how these coatings works.... especially in light of the fact that insomuch as these 'plastic-dip' coatings are not as engrossed or complicated as true protective coatings [nomenclature: paints], they nonetheless have scientists developing the compositions and application techniques --- that of which I'm sure differ from your so advanced techniques.
    Wisest words I was ever told when young and learning what I liked in life (auto restoration and mechanics), was to "shut your mouth and open your eyes and ears!" Had I not listened to that I would have advanced to the level I have ---- that of which I have not had one job or complaint in over 16 years of the last 35 that I've been engrossed in this work.
    Just some food for thought, Kiddo.

    Thanks for the vid man - had a question though. I found it funny that you recommend basically doing what Fonzie at DYC doesn't recommend...that is going heavy on the first coat? In his instructional vids he recommends doing light coats and building up the layers slowly? Just curious, as your finish seems to come out great with no texture. Do they heavy coats seem to just work better for you?

    • @SickDips
      @SickDips  9 років тому +7

      +NickBen11 I find that you can do it thick from the very first coat and you will not get texture with it. If his way works for you, by all means do that, but this is how I get it to work. :)

    Before you peel that plastic Dip off start with one of the corners and take a hairdryer and heat it up I’m saying start with like you know just a little section that way you can figure out because I never did it but plasty dip I would always use a hairdryer on taking decals off stuff you buy from the store and they got the prices with the stickers on there and when you pee The stickers off they don’t come off real good and then you’re you got a mess and people say use ice cubes and what it but it’s just a pain if you just heat it up I was trying to show my wife one day she don’t never listen to me she was trying to use ice so I said here give me a push prescription bottle or vitamin bottle and I use the hairdryer and you might have to heat more then once I wanna vitamin bottle because like you’re heating it up and as you’re peeling it and if it gets a little cold and as you’re peeling you can tell it’s not gonna be easy anymore you can tell right away when you go to heat it back up so you can finish and not have a mess 👍👍👍👍👍👍

    you left out the part if you want it to permanently stick. also is spraying from a gun the same as the can and no thinning required. my biggest problem i have unable to find is permanent sticking it to stainless steel besides using plasti dip primer. they claim you can use any acrylic automotive primer except rustoeum. for a more permanent adhesion. i get the wet. they sold me glossy plasti dip in a spray can. but my concern is the permanent bonding part over stainless steel. and the proper steps to do so if possible. ?

    3 years ago, I've applied plastidip spray on my front bumper, but it wasn't finished well as I expected(texture,orange peel).So I have purchased 'Dip dissolver' a year later, but I haven't tried it.
    Yesterday, after washing my car, I started to remove ugly orange peeled black matte black plastidip with Dip dissolver following by instruction video.
    I applied enough amount of dissolver onto area over 3 times to make sure it melt down then tried to wash out with garden hose.. However, it did not come off. So I tried to wipe it off with fiber towel, it looks more ugly, like stinky gunk wont come off.
    Now, I don't know what should I do. Please help. (how about re-spray plastidip thick wet coat again over the compromised residue?)

      madtonesbr he’s referring to the rough sandpaper-like finish that you get if you do too light of coats. since it sprays out in particles, if you don’t do a heavy/wet enough coat, you see those individual particles because it’s not a think enough coat for it to self-level by filling in the gaps. then it ends up looking almost like a low grit spray bedliner.

    I put 5 coats on my hood today. It's too textured for my standards. If i put 1 wet coat on the whole thing, will it fix it or at least look somewhat better?

    I totally didn't go wet enough and started with two very tacky layers. So after glossifyer I have a textured finish that isn't what I like. Now I know what went wrong, thanks man!

    When using the hvlp sprayer, do you thin the gallons from DYC? I was told by DYC to further thin the gallons for an hvlp gun, but I have watched videos of people having success without thinning.

    I like the wet coat technique but I feel like it should be we coats the last few coats. But most of the time if you spray it wet on a piece that is vertical it will run. I did this mistake costing me to do it again. Tack coat first and second coat then do wet coats. Still even finish.

    cross hatching helps even the coats as well. also, sanding with 6000 grit wet between coats , and tack cloth between coats to remove all dust particles is important.

    now you started off with wet coats. DYC recommends first and 2nd coat to be light and then start wet coats. whats the best option here. trying to spray the entire car

    Hi, I watched your video and I realized that you use a compressor very similar to mine '' air force commander 4.0hp), I want to connect a professional gun with professional compressor hose to that, as I can do? as you did? What precautions should I take? the compressor will endure? I need your help. Thank you !

    • @SickDips
      @SickDips  9 років тому

      +Dip In I only use that 'compressor' to blow water off of cars. I dont use that to paint. I have an actual compressor like this to paint (see the link). The air force commander pushes air, it does not compress it like a compressor to pump up a tire.
      My compressor is like a much bigger version of this: www.amazon.com/PORTER-CABLE-C2002-Oil-Free-Pancake-Compressor/dp/B000O5RO1Y/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1447462172&sr=8-16&keywords=compressor

    False, a few base coats that are not wet will not result in texture. Any wet coat is going to level, hence why its called a wet coat.

    How many gallons is your air compressor??

    • @SickDips
      @SickDips  9 років тому

      +Al3x201228 I have a couple. You will want at least a 60 gallon air compressor when painting a vehicle. Ideally, you should get an 80 and not have to worry about it.

    my problem with this video is that it doesn't tell you the ACTUAL important points.
    Number one! Get a big compressor, as soon as he started spraying the compressor started. DO NOT USE A COMPRESSOR THAT IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR AN HVLP!!
    Number 2 Small pieces are really easy, start small.
    Number 3 Paint is not an exact science, don't go thinking you will get the same results. Also he doesn't show you how to adjust the hvlp to get a nice flow. get a piece of cardboard and try a test before you even consider starting.
    Number 4 don't go out and buy a $400 sata hvlp, start with the home depot and harbor freight hvlp. Work your way up.
    Other than that it should help a lot of people
