Now let's see you do it to a person's car or truck that has been driven . ( paint chips , some clear coat coming off.) Not every one has a care with perfect paint to start with. We need a few videos showing how to prep for that stuff.
Paint chips and the final clear protective layer coming off are not the results of a car that has been driven. I'll give it to you on one of them, paint chips are sometimes unavoidable, depends where you live and what surface you travel on. But final coat coming off is more a sign of poor care, old age of vehicle before 2 stage paint jobs, or errors in preparing the paints resulting in failure. In this case it's not a fair example that someone hasn't washed their vehicle regularly, clay bar with wax/seal. That's not a car that's been driven, it's called neglect. So I have an 83 c10 step side that I wanna do on pearl white or ballon white I know a lil on painting but after seeing this video I’m definitely doing my truck
Being new to this channel, I have 2 questions : how long does the dip last on a car being used daily. And, if chips, tears on edge-lifts occur, can it be repaired/touched up??
I'd like to know the exact same thing. I am replacing a fender on my Silverado and would love to just paint dip instead of paying to get the part painted. Seems awesome if I can just dip it instead of paying for paint jobs. Or... Doing this to a brand new vehicle and when I go to sell it just remove the dip and let it shine like just rolled off the lot.
@@pointblank2910 It varies a lot depending on how thick you apply it, what kind of weather exposure you have, etc. In Texas, I've got some wide plasti-dip black stripes. After 7 years they were looking pretty bad. I remasked the same area and sprayed another two coats from an aerosol can, and they look as good as new. Plasti-dip does a great job of leveling itself out, and rewetting itself, so old stuff combines well with new stuff as long as it is clean. One thing I don't see mentioned much that helps is removing the masking tape as soon as you finish the last coat. By removing the tape while the dip is still wet, it gives nice clean edges. The alternative is to cut through the dip once it is dry, which just takes a lot more work. If you let it dry and just pull off the tape, you will be pulling up the plasti-dip with it. If that ever happens, put the tape back down, spray a new coat over the tape line, and remove the tape while the dip is wet.
You would almost make more money doing tutorials for other various companies. Your videos are so thorough, including common problems and what-ifs, yet they're not redundant or overly informative.

You should do a hard line on the fender liners and the back tape and hang paper or plastic, most fender liners contact the metal on the fender or quarter panel which could cause bridging also a lot of dirt gets stuck in there and can blow out while spraying even after a good wash
I'm glad to see you taping the cars now. Spraying over molding would always shrink over time making it look messy. You have come a long way since the first DIY days. Product is looking better and better. Keep it up!

There is a painting trick with spray paint to have the base coat show through by throwing dish liquid on the top of the finished base coat then paint over the base with the soap on it. Let it dry then wash the soap off to reveal the base to the top to have some crazy color combos. With the mad scientist videos if there was some way to replicate that process to try and achieve the same results it would be mental
One thing I'd like to inquire about is door handles. On a car like what you just dipped, there are recesses behind the door handle and I didn't see you adjust your spray to handle that. What do you do to insure you get full coverage behind the door handles? Just spray at a downward angle from the top and an upward angle from the bottom? I would assume that, but you know what they say about assume...
I just want to say that this is probably the BEST video you've put out for those considering some DIY. Great pointers, not too fast and excellent instructions. I'm looking forward to doing this to my car soon. Thanks!
I wanna see you dip the roof! I think in every video you've never done the roof. I'm about to do my A4 and its silver so I cant just leave the roof undone.
My question is there anything different you have to do when painting a car that has had body work done to it or is it still the same thing the reason I ask is because all the cars in these videos are new with no body damage that has been fixed or anything
Same bro cause I wanna dip my truck but it needs some working and I was wondering if we could just spray it over regular automotive primer cause every car in these videos have clear coat and I wanna see if it makes the difference if the vehicle is clear coated or just regular primer
1500/2000grit is too fine and you'll be sanding for ever. Start sanding with a 600 and go to a 1000 if you really want to. It's primer, and the plastidip is thick, so you won't notice any small blemished if you leave them.
Gizawar in between coats we just refill it. When we change colors we usually run Naphtha paint thinner through it and wipe it down. When we are finished, we again run Naphtha through it and leave all the parts separated to air dry.
So I have just recently started watching these videos and Im really interested and excited to start dipping on my own. One question I have right now is I see in a lot of the videos that you spray right over the emblems of cars and they don't look taped/masked off and then in the final shots the emblems are not dipped but instead are in the standard chrome. Ive watched your video on spraying emblems and and I see you can just peel it away? do you ever run into the bridging problem on the emblems. To me (who has never done this before) it just seems like it would be all to easy to be peeling the dip off of the emblem but then it start taking the dip on the surface of the car with as you do it. Obviously I would use extremely care and go slow while peeling it off but do you ever run into that problem I described or is does it always just peel away with simply ease?
I just bought my first kit and I’m pumped to get started. These videos are great thank you! I watched another video of one of your employees and he recommends not taping off the tail lights or head lights because it peels off easily with clean edges. Just want some clarification which method is best. Thanks!

If dipped properly, a good 3-5 years but I'm pretty sure most people would change the color by then especially if they dipped it themselves.
Very helpful. Have way more confidence in dipping my Charger
You would almost make more money doing tutorials for other various companies. Your videos are so thorough, including common problems and what-ifs, yet they're not redundant or overly informative.
Man so excited, grabbed everything over Christmas, thanks for the letter by the way. Tesla Y owner since 20/21' needs a refresh. Gonna attempt red to black hyper w/ burned orange rims .
Hey Fonzi
Now that you mentioned the gaps between panels. How does it actually look like in there ( spraythrough / coating wise ) after you spray the car? Where does the paint stop? Would love to see some "behind the gaps" video because you never see that, only shots with closed doors.
And how do you get the door handles and the area behind it coated with enough layers?
^
You should do a hard line on the fender liners and the back tape and hang paper or plastic, most fender liners contact the metal on the fender or quarter panel which could cause bridging also a lot of dirt gets stuck in there and can blow out while spraying even after a good wash
I just realized I watched the whole video without skipping. 😳
I'm glad to see you taping the cars now. Spraying over molding would always shrink over time making it look messy. You have come a long way since the first DIY days. Product is looking better and better. Keep it up!
Thanks for this Fonzie
Awesome Job.
I got the Metalic Siler kit for my G35 and bought some Blue/Purple Flake in white powder to go inbetween.
cant wait to get the car back from the shop so I can attack this project. its got headers install, suspention work, custom interior waiting to get done and it will be a project complete.
Updates on your G35?
There is a painting trick with spray paint to have the base coat show through by throwing dish liquid on the top of the finished base coat then paint over the base with the soap on it. Let it dry then wash the soap off to reveal the base to the top to have some crazy color combos. With the mad scientist videos if there was some way to replicate that process to try and achieve the same results it would be mental
Thank you so much for this video.easily, imo your most informative and valuable video ever posted. What a tremendous insight and again, thank you!
Thanks @DipYourCar this was a very helpful video, just brushing up, the Integra is almost ready to spray 👍
“Nice and tight” is the official phrase of this video xD
One thing I'd like to inquire about is door handles. On a car like what you just dipped, there are recesses behind the door handle and I didn't see you adjust your spray to handle that. What do you do to insure you get full coverage behind the door handles? Just spray at a downward angle from the top and an upward angle from the bottom? I would assume that, but you know what they say about assume...
How did you fix the roof "trim" at 37:10? It looks jagged and cut up when you peeled the tape.
The roof is glass... its a panoramic sunroof lol
Did you do the A4?
@@elephantmoney yes but I just had the roof wrapped in gloss black. Made it a lot easier.
@@Justin-tw8ws ya I'm thinking the same. Did you dip the body too? How did you like the result?
@@elephantmoney yeah I dipped the rest of the body in space gray. It came out great.
This is a really thorough and well made video. props.
Aye fonzie can you do a video doing inside the doors 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
yea
This gave new the confidence to dip my own car thanx
My question is there anything different you have to do when painting a car that has had body work done to it or is it still the same thing the reason I ask is because all the cars in these videos are new with no body damage that has been fixed or anything
Same bro cause I wanna dip my truck but it needs some working and I was wondering if we could just spray it over regular automotive primer cause every car in these videos have clear coat and I wanna see if it makes the difference if the vehicle is clear coated or just regular primer
Should be fine, just wet sand with 1500/2000 grit paper on primer so the surface is smooth
1500/2000grit is too fine and you'll be sanding for ever. Start sanding with a 600 and go to a 1000 if you really want to. It's primer, and the plastidip is thick, so you won't notice any small blemished if you leave them.
Yeah, im going to need this in VR to truly understand, if you can even make it able to interact that would be great.
Much needed, extremely helpful!
Thank you. I learned a TON, including a lot about masking i didnt know.
But what do you do with spraygun between spraying? You clean it? Leave it? If you clean then what you use?
Gizawar in between coats we just refill it. When we change colors we usually run Naphtha paint thinner through it and wipe it down. When we are finished, we again run Naphtha through it and leave all the parts separated to air dry.
Speaking of the door jams, if you want them to match and not have the old color show when you open the door...what's your advice on that?
WOOHOO starting on my s3 today in onyx
Good luck! I hope you'll share your results, I'd love to see it.
Alex Diamantopulo will do!
akash minhas so how did it go????
I posted a short walkaround for you. Goodluck if you're looking to do the same thing!
I´m from Panama and I will be buying this product for my car!..thanks for the videos!
Will it work on a car with scratches?
Yea after u sand and prime the scratches.
What if you want to dip the mirrors too instead of covering them and bending them towards the vehicle? Can you go over that as well?
If you do it right, it peels right away. Though I have started using soft tip darts to help keep lines clean.

Good
I just bought my first kit and I’m pumped to get started. These videos are great thank you! I watched another video of one of your employees and he recommends not taping off the tail lights or head lights because it peels off easily with clean edges. Just want some clarification which method is best. Thanks!
And do you have any recommendations on how to attack the hood of a larger mid size SUV? I’ve got a Hyundai Tucson so it’s a bit taller
How do ya do the door jams
I love this channel! Everything is explained so clearly to where even myself can understand 😁 much love from Kentucky 🤘🤘
Am I the only one who wonders about the door jams? Anything special for those? Does the plasti dip get inside the door jams? From this video it doesn’t seem like door jams are a problem but I just want to be sure before I go dip my car haha
BARE BONES TACTICAL near the end of the video fonzie shows how he masks the door jams. I think it’s around the 35 minute mark.
rsmasterng ah yes I just got to that part thanks
rsmasterng do you know about the timeline this last on a car?
mine has been dipper for 6 months still holding up.. most people say 1-3 years depends how good u spray it and and take care of it.
Awesome video , Im pretty sure everyone that uses plastidip will love this and find it useful
The solution to world hunger
Tape n’ Drape
