That is my favorite and the best part of the song IMO. The fact that he was able to come up with an even better polyrhythm than the one on eulogy is also pretty amazing
I think the earth shook @ 6:39. he hit the gong like a true warrior. I don't understand how anyone can compare any drummer to Carey, its not fair, the dude is on a level of his own. no one can match him. there are times when i listen to Carey and i get confused, how can you create so many rhythms simultaneously, i rarely ever say this, but it is truly mind blowing, almost super-natural its border line scary.
@@nanodash3748 Joey did not hit the drums like Danny. Joey was about a foot shorter than Danny and much less of a unit, Danny can hit the shit out of drums
@George Kamil I feel is as a drum solo with the guitar giving it an "atmosphere". The beauty of tool is that everyone can see them with their own eye in an unique way.
Still the greatest song I’ve ever heard....I remember getting the cd on day 1 and driving around for hours listening to it. 17 years later, I still do the same thing, it’s just a master class in music... hope they come back near Baltimore so I can see them for a 6th time 🙂
This, in my opinion, is what separates him from other legendary drummers. And it's not just the energy, it's also the joy of playing. I feel as though that transfers to the listener and makes it even better.
but the reason you pick up his joy because of the energy he puts into his drumming, all great drummers have joy when playing, but not all of them throw that massive energy at you.
Danny is a beast. How he can play in a different time signature than the others and still make it sound INCREDIBLE makes him better than any other. He is boss. No other way to describe him.
Johan Sjögren Great comment, you are right - we are all living in a little bubble and not worthy of hearing of your secret drummer that has more skills than Danny.
Everyone's talking about the Gong strike, but what about 5:15 - 5:52 ? That playing is so fucking powerful and expressive that it puts a tear in my eye. Goddamn.
In that duration, the speed, the energy and passion that he puts into it is nearly unspeakable. that looks so hard to replicate with that exact speed and precision. Just so damn godly.
He brings a whole new meaning to Man and Machine as one! He has my up most respect! I would love to be able to play this and I have played for many years!
It's so awesome how the timing works: if you just watch Danny play, it seems he goes against every intuition of a drummer... just to make those 7/8, 9/6, whatever, notes fit:) also I love that up to about 3min into the song, you're like "yeah, with some training I could do that too!"... and then he just shatters that hope, except for those few with octopus arms and a great sense of timing...:)
Thank you for posting, I am supposed to cover this song with my band mates and this vid answered my questions as how to play some of the key parts! Daney is a mathematician too after all! :D
I love how he plays different instruments at different time signatures, and they all meet up at some point. Big example is at 4:10, where he was playing just the hi-hat before and when the bass drum comes in. At first it seems like the bass drum is off beat with the hi-hat, but it meets up with it a few measures later, then off again. Absolutely amazing coordination!!
Every single bar he plays after the brief rest at 5:55 is just beast mode Danny Carey! DrumGameStrongEST!!! What a hit on that gong though! Holy F ' ing Sheeeetttttt!
Just saw Tool a couple nights ago @ the Mohegan Sun. Went to the show by myself so I wouldn't have to worry about friends chewing my ears off when I'm trying to be engulfed in the music. Well, during Lateralus, when they went from the first jungle section into the chorus, my head nearly exploded. I'm a huge Grateful Dead fan, and people say there's nothing like a Grateful Dead show. Well, like the Dead, there is nothing like a Tool show. They truly are an INCREDIBLE band.
legend has it he blinks in polyrhythms
😂
FUCKING BRILLIANT 😂😂😂
How does one be so manly and badass and breathtakingly beautiful all at once?..
😂😂😂😂
💀💀💀
When he hits the gong at 6:36, it's the greatest moment to ever happen in rock.
Agreed. Powerful.
+Aristotle Dreher lol
When I saw them on the 2001 tour, and he hit the gong, my mind was expanded
No doubt....boom!
Aristotle Dreher epic
This is probably the most well-thought out song in the history of music.
Bohemian Rhapsody may have a thing or two to say about that
different category and skill level
Bohemian Rhapsody comment on a Tool video lmao
John Smith Every Queen fan ever
John Smith Bohemian rhapsody is a melodic masterpiece, lateralus is a rhythmic masterpiece
6:38 so thats the reason I fell off my bed that day.
Danny the beast!!!
That gong hit is actually the greatest moment of all time.
nobody talks about the 4:10 arrangement. it's simply crazy to put that combo of snare-hihat and bass drum!
Yeah ik it’s a sick poly rhythm
The beat within a beat disguised as another beat
That is my favorite and the best part of the song IMO. The fact that he was able to come up with an even better polyrhythm than the one on eulogy is also pretty amazing
Carlos Garcia the entire song is a crazy arrangement
That groove makes me fly every time
6:38. . . DAMN!!!!
Damn!
And didn’t miss a beat.
Was this filmed with a urethra?
hurt myself laughing
JPMotoXdude had me dying
GODDAMNIT! Best UA-cam comment in the history of UA-cam. I raise one to you you son of a bitch lol
Oh my fucking God this comment
Looks like it. That's ok though, at least we get to see this, right?
How he finds ways to be constantly thrashing on the drums but yet be so subtle and not over-bearing at the same time is mind blowing!
8 years later and I'm Still just as blown away.
Being a good drummer is about creativity, feel and style and not just speed and technique. Danny Carey has all those qualities in his drumming.
0:01-7:53 was EPIC
I think the earth shook @ 6:39. he hit the gong like a true warrior. Apotheosis I know exactly what you mean, I at times get confused when I attempt to keep the rhythm along with him.
Thomas Lang, Marco Minneman just to mention a few, could easily do Carey stuff.
Joey jordison
Was half asleep then I heard that gong!! bang!
@@nanodash3748 Joey did not hit the drums like Danny. Joey was about a foot shorter than Danny and much less of a unit, Danny can hit the shit out of drums
Love how he plays those drums with authority
6:39 He just goes ahead, grabs that mallet, and whacks that fucking gong like a boss! I think the camera exploded!
5:44 Amazing...
yep!
prismah it looked like for a few seconds, he stepped into a different dimension, then phased bad into reality.
5:14 is when the destruction begins
@George Kamil I feel is as a drum solo with the guitar giving it an "atmosphere". The beauty of tool is that everyone can see them with their own eye in an unique way.
i listened to Danny Carey play drums today. It was a good day.
Danny just nuked Nagasaki with that gong hit.
It looked like it had a shock wave, lol.
He just created a new universe with that gong hit.

dude is insane, if every drummer was this dedicated, we'd be swimming in a world of awesome music...
Wow!!! How can "Danny" not be considered one of the best drummers in the WORLD!!! Truly unique and unbelievable drumming skills.
good god, the energy output of this guy when he plays. it's unlike anything else.
This, in my opinion, is what separates him from other legendary drummers.

Greatest drummer in the greatest band in the last 40 years.

At minute 6:40, we can appreciate the only existing recording of the birth of a new galaxy...
its hilarious that nobody in the world has as much skill as this man
Danny Carey is amazing... but you're all living in a little bubble. :)
Johan Sjögren Dude did I take too much DMT or is your avatar sideways. Crazy shit.
Johan Sjögren Great comment, you are right - we are all living in a little bubble and not worthy of hearing of your secret drummer that has more skills than Danny.
Barkeroni How do define "skill"?
Deathshuck Woooooow, you've read about DMT on the internetz, cool.
Everyone's talking about the Gong strike, but what about 5:15 - 5:52 ? That playing is so fucking powerful and expressive that it puts a tear in my eye. Goddamn.
Agreed
Surely there must be only a few drummers in the world who can replicate that sequence with such energy.
In that duration, the speed, the energy and passion that he puts into it is nearly unspeakable. that looks so hard to replicate with that exact speed and precision. Just so damn godly.
i got to see him live again last november. god damn it was unbelievable.
Wow... what an artist!!!! The creative spirit and pure talent in this guy is unreal! I can't wait for the new album!
What an awesome drummer. He has been such inspiration to me over the years!
I find my self watching him for most of the show, in absolute awe.
Beautiful, simply beautiful
Danny is an absolute master and his timing and playing skills are impeccable
A drumming genius, its as simple as that.
this will never get old. ever it just gets better and better :) a rare characteristic found in bands today
I watch this like once a week at least
Wow...what an amazing treat to watch. He's so brilliant it awes me. Being a guitarist, all I ever wanted was a friend like Danny lol.
He brings a whole new meaning to Man and Machine as one! He has my up most respect! I would love to be able to play this and I have played for many years!
Outstanding doesn't even begin to describe this, his craft is unmatched.
Best drumming I´ve ever seen, this is insane honestly.
Pure art in movement
favorite drummer...
Excellent as always!!
absolute perfection...
6:38 EPIC!!!!!
danny is the best
Can't get enough..these guys are my new LED
It's so awesome how the timing works: if you just watch Danny play, it seems he goes against every intuition of a drummer... just to make those 7/8, 9/6, whatever, notes fit:) also I love that up to about 3min into the song, you're like "yeah, with some training I could do that too!"... and then he just shatters that hope, except for those few with octopus arms and a great sense of timing...:)
The main verses' time signatures are 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8. 987 is the 17th step in the Fibonacci Sequence. ;)
Amazing!!!
goosebumps of the Gods ! Danny Carey, i love you !
So surreal watching the magic happen.... amazing
just a surge of energy is pulsating out of his body into the kit....
6:37 most epic moment in drumming history \m/
Perfect position for great video quality and sound, thanks
One of the best drummmers in the world. That's epic when he hit the gong.
mesmerizing. love the gong.
amazing.
6:35 …absolute genius. This man is on a plane of consciousness that most of us can only aspire to!
Love the gong hit. Just out of nowhere and adds a lot to that moment
Every once in a while you come across something a human does that is just incredible. That was massive.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my favorite drummer :)
tool concert=one of the best experiences of my life.....this song MAIN REASON!!!!
Words can’t even describe..
No other drummer utilizes the cymbals as well as Danny imo, so creative, so complex, just riveting
that was epic man!
Thank you for posting, I am supposed to cover this song with my band mates and this vid answered my questions as how to play some of the key parts! Daney is a mathematician too after all! :D
I love Danny so much!I couldn't hit the wrong drums like that and I have played my entire life
GOD DAMN !!!
I love how when he finishes a 32nd single stroke roll he rewards himself with a crash. He has a child's playfulness in this video.
I'm not a drummer so I find it remarkable he can remember all that he has to play for this song.
Simpliy awesome..
came to watch this video and dont ever remember watching it, but apparently i liked it awhile back
Danny Carey is the president of the universe
the amount of drums he hits!!
I can’t even begin to comprehend to comprehend this as an aspiring drummer
wait here is a man of talent brilliant
This guy... is fucking awesome. Much love to Danny Carey.
beast
Coolest video ever. The gong hit did it in for me...the best hands down
what a beast....
What a machine...
6:39
The epicness...no words can be fathomed of that can begin to describe how intense that was. I literally got chills.
Fucking love Danny, one of the most humble guys on the planet and he's pretty much a god at what he does.
I love how he plays different instruments at different time signatures, and they all meet up at some point. At first it seems like the bass drum is off beat with the hi-hat, but it meets up with it a few measures later, then off again. Absolutely amazing coordination!!
I took muh shrooms and cant figure it out to save my life

What a fuckinggggg beastttt!!!! He seems to hit those drums really hardddd!!!
Epic song, epic band, epic drummer. That is all.

this is a great example of mathematical complexity blends with enormous creativity in a very inspiring and powerful way.
