Danny Carey of Tool plays along with Lateralus. There's a short interview at the end of the drum sesh, as well. I do not own this video. It belongs to OnlineDrummer.com
He talks about this in another interview in the studio, his drum kit has extra thick skins to allow him to hit them that hard. it's part of his playing style.
Metal shells would have nothing to do with how hard he hits. Shell material will change the overall tone, projection, and feel of the drums. What makes those shells special is they're made from Paiste 2002 alloy, it gives it a completely different sound from wood drums, beyond that, different woods, and different shell thickness will produce different tones, projection, etc from each other. What takes the real beating is the drum head, in the scheme of things drum heads are cheap, and probably free in Danny Carey's case.
I fully agree. Mr Carey is a very HUMBLE gent. That's worked to the extreme to be blessed with creative artistic talent I've ever seen. And I've seen many Metal bands being a 1985 H, S grad. 30 yrs now since My ears stood at full attention when I first heard. SOBER. all my metal buddies were saying. Did you hear the bases with such heavy notes .? NOPE I couldn't get over Danny Carey Drumming style. Saw them 1994 . FANFUCKINTASTIC. See Tool has remained Solid. 30 plus yrs now. Their professional craftmenship keeps them a breed apart . No changing for popularity always changing world were in. you always know it's TOOL playing F√CK YEAH their like a fine wine. Get Better in time. Now all we need to do is convince them. We require another 30 More years . TOOL Medicine. 😎
And to think that at live shows, this song is usually their encore. Danny Carey plays this consistently after an entire show of entertaining thousands of people. The power and ferocity with each strike is already astonishing, but the endurance required to do that over extended periods of time... its unbelievable. Not to mention that he's nearly 60 years old now, and still kickin' ass. What an absolute LEGEND
He's an occultist. They feel overt arrogance is a sign of insecurity and weakness - the way to control people is via arrogance and action - never self-righteous behavior
I remember watching this video when I was 13 years old and I wanted to learn how to play just like Danny. Now I'm 19 and I play drums for multiple bands. Danny will forever be a major influence on me. :)

Dude. That look down at 1:47 is clutch!! Even live hes flawless with it. One handed playing reaching getting the mallet and banging the *fuck* outta that gong!
I love when a certain drummer makes you remember them for something amazing. I always think about how he turns to smash the cymbal with both hands, 1:18. I've never seen another drummer do that. So memorable and so much damn power. Insanely heavy player.
D Carey is just straight beast and a very humble genuine type of a dude...how could you not like this guy...was killer when he hit the gong....great video...thanks for posting Drummer4Life!... what a trip..I just noticed this..right before Danny hits the gong...he tucks his right drumstick under his left arm ...then grabs the thing to hit the gong..
Best drummer on the planet. Best yo ever do it. That gong transition was flawless. Wasn't even a drum solo. Tool is just smart enough to showcase Danny's talent. This video never gets old
Justin always seemed like that too. He gets so emotional whenever they play in the UK. I think I'd be scared to meet them, though. What if they were assholes. That would have a big impact on me haha.
dreamoflesbianham No man all the guys in Tool are cool to the fans. Actually they talk to you like you're a PERSON which is way cooler than having that wall with the rockstar/fan dynamic. Except for Maynard. He's a dick.
you think of a band like tool being "metal" and then you see him and hear him talk and its like you just blew my fucking mind....sounds like a cool guy and plays like a fucking demon :) i love this band :)
I don't think I've heard any polyrhytms in tool, but I don't listen very carefully for them. They usually sound like shit. Polymeters, however... Reminds me of Hakke from Meshuggah. The time signatures of Tool don't intimidate me as much as how smooth their transitions are. Most of my songs run through just as many, if not more time signatures, but I have no idea how they make those transitions, and keep the implied pulse so well. Not to be overly comparative to Meshuggah, but they tend to keep a very real quarter note (or dotted eighth) on throughout the song. Tool does not always do that, yet you can still feel that pulse. It makes for a very crafted sounding song, and I admire the hell out of that.
Sebastian Fritzon I don't think I heard any polyrhythms in there, but I'm not a drummer, so I probably don't count things the same. What I heard was a 6/8 beat on the kick and snare with a 4/16 hi-hat pattern in the latter jammier part of the song (around 5:30). Those two meters do not fit evenly in the same measure, so he has to play it a few times for things to come back around, thus a polymeter. A legit polyrhythm would have to fit two time signatures in the same measure space. For example the 3:4 polyrhythm fits a 3/4 pattern into the same space as the 4/4 pattern at the same time. The way that I think about it is this; if the drummer played every single pulse in the time signature with no emphasis, and it doesn't freak me out, then its not a polyrhythm. You might know more than me here, and school me on it, which I'm happy to have happen.
This is, by far, the most inspiring video of my life. And Carey is the main reason why I play the drums.I do not know if he's going to read this one day but ... thanks dude!
