Legend has it that Danny Carey made a deal with the devil. Nobody knows what Danny got, but the devil got drum lessons.
BAHAHA YESSSSSS!
And God was jealous
Devil: worth it.
2 weeks ago @suitsmefine100 won the internet and didn't even realize it.
The deal was with Baphomet, just like with Jimmy Page, Andrew Eldritch and David Bowie, not with the Devil..
Legend has it that Danny's hi-hat is used by atomic clocks around the world for time reference...
HAHAHA
Gene Hoglan already has that mantle!!
Legend also has it that Danny constantly beats off🤘🏾
Athen Demosh no he has record for hoagies eaten during recording session
Mr. Hoglan is the human atomic clock, tyvm.
"You're not supposed to be able to do this" is the most accurate and succinct summation of Danny Carey's drumming I've ever heard.
HAHA
He didn’t just play this … he composed it! Mind blowing.
Yup! 🤯
It's funny how few people realize how little Maynard has to do with the music. The band composes all the music, then he puts lyrics on it...
@@dieselmunkeyI agree. Maynard is one hell of an artist, but when it comes to playing out a song like this (weaving between 6/6 and 6/5), the vocals are the easy part.
One thing yall don’t realise is that vocal chords are also an instrument. And it is limited by your physical abilities. You cannot just add an extra vocal cord to it or smth. The more limited your instrument is the more creative you have to be to capture attention and be interesting. “Just put lyrics on top” does not mention all the years of listening to different music and shaping your melodic vocabulary. Which in fact makes your instrument unique and valuable.

Without a shadow of a doubt. Might even be the best drummer who has ever lived.

Danny Carey is one of those musicians where you can be a guitar player for 30 years; live, breathe, eat and drink guitar, but anytime you listen to Tool you think "i wish i played drums instead."
Yep. I would be so much cooler, and in demand.
This is large facts.
I say this out of experience.
@@annunacky4463 Very true.
Hahah i was just saw him play for the first time and for the first time i tought to myself it would be cool to play drums
He is, arguably, one of the world's greatest drummer's of all time..and he is a very humble guy.
When people like Keith moon and Dave Grohl make it in the "greatest drummers" lists but Danny isn't there, I know that list doesn't mean shit.....
Arguably, even his dear friend Neal peart admitted to his genius
"...and he's a very humble guy."
He's always playing guitar with different groups when not doing Tool stuff, and he doesn't show off at all. He plays what the song calls for, whether it's straight 4/4, or something jazzy, or whatever.
And I've seen a video of the end of music school or music camp for kids, where some of the kids cover a Tool song, and Danny is playing the drums for them.
He's just so incredibly giving of his time.

Years from now my kids will ask me how I got through 2020. And I’ll say for the first half I just watched Danny Carey drum. And the second half I watched other people watch Danny Carey drum
Amen!!!!
Hahaha hilarious! What a great way to honour the 'Living Legend'
For real though lol
Lol! That's all you need to 🖖!
Yeah, pretty much.
To me, TOOL is like four artists painting masterpieces - in sync with each other - that somehow come together and make a greater masterpiece when the works are combined. I think that is the Brilliance of Danny and the other members of the band. Danny created his own piece vs a studio musician that plays exactly what was written extremely well.
Funnily enough...I spoke to my brother about this...I mean...what are the odds...in this great big world...that these guys found each other...understood each other..."spoke" the same "language" so to speak...? The precision, the technical ability...it's just unbelievable! Rush, Dream Theater...have sort of the same intellectual philosophy (imho!)...but I've NEVER been privy to anything like TOOL. What a wonderful time to be alive, yes?
@@gabriellenojaim261 it makes you wonder if we will ever see another band like Tool in our lifetime. They are that unique.
@@redsix5165 I'd be surprised to be honest...it seems to me...that they're here at the "right time?" (Since at the very least you and I appreciate them...!) but they're also, technically speaking, way ahead of their time....how do people end up where they are? Danny Carey. Mike Portnoy. Carter Beaufort. Shannon Larkin. Mike Mancini. Can you say GODLIKE when it comes to describing their abilities? These guys were put on this planet to DO exactly what they're doing. I envy them so for their ability to have read their "God maps" at birth...and more for their abilities to not allow ANYTHING to KEEP them from the paths they walked in order to have arrived.
@@gabriellenojaim261 well said

Never heard of Danny Carey before this video. Already a big fan. What he's doing here is totally ridiculous and soooo beautiful.
Glad you hear him now!
True legend
Carole King's ex-drummer. For real, before Tool he played with Carole.
I met Danny at Six Flags of all places standing in line of a roller coaster. Tool played the night before at the Pepsi Center and they must of took the day off from the tour. He was very gracious and down to earth. Shook his hand and he told me Adam Jones was chilling on a bench nearby. Went on the roller coaster and met Adam a minute later. He was alone relaxing on a park bench. Also a class act guy. True professionals and musicians.
That's awesome!!
Doooooooood!
That's only half the story... Danny was actually the rollercoaster 🎢
Here in Denver no less. Nice.

To me it's a mystery he's not coming up in every drummers' conversations tbh.
He's one of the greatests.
Maybe he's not as famous as others because Tool, even though famous, is still a bit of a niche that not everyone gets into.
Once you dive in though...you get lost in the complexity and the beauty of the musical choices this band makes and you get hooked.
A true original and legend of the game
Also, as a band, Tool has never been about individualism. They operate as a unit, and act as one. That's one incredible thing about them, no one member presents them self as more unpretentious than the others
Tool is my favorite band. They have created this beautiful geometric algorithm in their songs. They are unparalleled and the fact they don’t care about fame is what makes them so great. They perform for the love and just completely in tune with each other. They’re entrancing and Danny is just chef’s kiss.
Imagine That You are painting a circle with your left hand,A square with your right hand,Triangle on right foot and then painting some mythical creature on your left foot all at the same time,That is what Danny is doing.Just unreal talent
It's like having four separate brains!
Perfect analysis perfect!
Meanwhile you forgot to put the phone that’s in your pocket right now on “do not disturb” mode, and your wife thought you were off tonight. Or maybe the guitar player was a little off tonight. Or maybe you’ve heard this song a thousand times and you only now suddenly realize there’s something slightly off about it somewhere. Or you simply missed a meal that day.
You have to have 4 fully autonomous brains while also actively turning off the fifth brain constantly telling you that flawless drumming is not your current number one priority
For damn sure, that's a great way to try and comprehend his talent.

There is nothing like Tool that I've ever heard. They're technically a commercial band because they're so popular, but that's only because they're so unique and good, and people love it. 90% of bands you can say they're kind of like another current or past band. Me too can't wait. Seeing them in NH
I went to one of their shows earlier this year, the giant curved keyboard thing behind him is indeed an instrument! I can't remeber which song it was, closer to the middle of the show, but it was on a hydraulics system, dropped down a little, moved closer to Danny and he stood up and started PLAYING IT, like it was his kit, totally natural. I was floored, that man is insane with his talent, the whole band are musical genuises.
Don't forget the gong work for CCTrip.
I ruined my oldest son for life, the first concert i took him to. The show was King Crimson and Tool at Redrocks in denver. The best venue and the best show he will ever see. He admits that to this day.

Friend of mine actually knew Danny before Tool. He told me a story about sitting around having dinner with him. He sat his hand down on the table, started with Half Notes on one finger, quarter notes on the next, eighth notes on the next, and 16th on another. Literally keeping 4 beats on 4 fingers on the same hand. The guy is just wired different. It's insane what he can do.
How many people tried this on their desk after reading the comment?
I’m laying in bed reading this and trying it....I got three of four....I’m out!!
I managed 3 of 4 fingers i'm sorry but 16th notes are to fast for my pinky no matter how slow my index finger plays the halfs

I listened to four full Tool albums while painting yesterday. So in other words I found a dull task to make time to listen.
I listen to a two hour personalized mix of Tool every Saturday when I do my yard. My neighbors must think I’m nuts, because I end up swinging and banging my head to the beat while I’m going. I look like a maniac pulling weeds and air drumming.

Tool don‘t have Moshpits. They have a Game of Chess Back there.
Hahahahah. Good comment, dude. I like that.
I've seen tool 3 times... the only time there was a mosh pit was in Kingston Ontario. They will never play there again lol it was a tiny venue "the K-rock Center"
Probably the best time I've seen 'em though... the pit was amazing and I was able to get real close because of the relative smallness of the venue.
They've had cooler effects and shit at other shows, but at a certain point it takes away from their stripped down live performances of the old days. That show was a happy medium so glad I went

The greatest technical drummer of our time. His Limb Independence is RIDICULOUS! It’s like he has 4 brains, one for each limb. As a drummer of 30 years, this video always blows my mind. As a dance teacher, I use Tool (particularly Danny's solos or outbreaks) to challenge my advanced students' interpretation of music. Im rarely disappointed, even if the result is "Damn, that music is deep in a different way"
Agree 100 percent! Well said!
"I think Maynard was behind a sheet the whole concert"
*Yeah that sounds about right*
May- NARRRD
I was like, "yeah, that's Maynard." Lol
Bahahaha nailed it dude
hahaha did you go to the show? they were literally behind a screen
Second tool show brought girlfriend to the the state theater in st Pete and Maynard wasn’t even on stage behind a sheet with a light behind him. Circa 98
Adam - "hey Danny, whats the time signature?"
Danny - "multiply the first ten fibbonachi numbers by Pi."
Adam - "okay."
~Nathan Diefenbach
YESSSSS! Makes total sense
Fibonacci
The answer is M, right?
Notorious Eavesdropper I thought it was spaghetti
Lmao perfect
I am no musician, and I know that watching Danny Carey play drums is watching an absolute master of his craft.
🙌
Hes probably my favorite drummer ever.
🙌
Love how Danny Carey started playing for Tool, Maynard was his friend and roommate n Maynard was super frustrated with the drummer he had and Danny was like, "Lol sure man, I'll help you out"
The time signature is yes.
HAHA YES!
#allthetimesignatures
Probably just 7/8, right?
the chorus is in 8/8, repeats every two bars, rest of the song kind of goes in 7/8
Most of it is two bars of 7/4 + one 5/8 at the end
What is amazing is while he does 8 things all in different time signatures, that little high hat is amazingly precise for over 6 minutes ... i think its in 4/4 .. most people hear it but does anyone understand how most drum, ers could not even do that sequence for 6 minutes not alone the other massive drumming along with it. He makes it look so easy.
As the brother of a master degree music major, Danny blew my brothers mind and he could never figure out what he was doing without seeing it. That speaks volumes from a drum master like my brother. See you in Biloxi Danny!
Not only is Danny destroying those drums he's still allowing space for the other members to dance while doing it. Such a tight performance from everyone.
That is such a good point. Same reason I love Floyd. The drums, bass, and guitar are not all doing the same thing like a ''radio'' song.
If Danny were controlling the Death Star, the Empire would have won
😂👌
It did in the Disney ending.
The best part of watching a musician react to genius level musicians is that look in their face while they pause and think back to what they just listened to.
HAHA!
His facial expression at 8:10 says everything you need to know about the brilliance of Danny Carey. The fill that evoked that expression is absolute perfection at a very challenging time of the song. I’ve been calling him the greatest drummer of all time since the Aenima album melted my brain and made me immediately go out and buy my first kit. Danny Carey, Long live the King!
"One doesn't listen to Tool on subway with earpods on"
Words of wisdom
HAHAHA
Honestly, I think focusing on Tool instead of the homeless guy gratifying himself in the corner is a great option.
I beg to differ, one should listen to tool however one can. They have much to say
no, it's true. because 9 times out of 10 you'll miss your stop
I listen to tool with IEMs. They're good, they have better ranges than most headphones.. 6Hz-24kHz, well outside human range of hearing. Instead of knocking earbuds, get better ones kids. You'll be much better off feeling as well as hearing tool.
Danny Carey has earned the nickname "The Octopus" for a reason
I had a friend that used to call me octopus on the drums but Ima be hella honest - I am a serious slop fest compared to Danny. Not even in the same universe. Yes maybe non drummers are impressed by my abilities but I know better and Danny is KING. I could maybe sluff through Sober that's about it.
No, Mark Brzyzicki is 'the octopus'. Danny Carey is 'the Dannypus'
After watching this for the hundredth time, my top three drummers are (for whatever reason) Mike Portnoy, Nicko McBrain and Danny Carey. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
What's harder than playing a poly rhythm whilst changing drums and keeping time on the hat is the fact that he's changing the dynamics of the volume on certain limbs as well.
A fucking wizard
Danny was voted 'best drummer in the world' by his peers 10yrs in a row!
The Greatest.
Where you seeing that? Would be real curious to read those!
One good song? Fuck outta here!!
@@marimt74 And it was Sober?! lol.
@@lukecook87 dude skipped 1996🤣
@Jeff King one good song..lol. Try ticks and leaches, jambi, and jerk off, i think that one was written for people like you..
I disagree when someone says that Tool is a newer version of blah blah or sounds like blah blah. Tool is it's own thing. Hell Tool isnt even part of a genre. Tool is a genre unto itself.
What I like is that all 4 have completely different tastes. And that soup is what makes the band. So to say they are the new version of Whatchamacallit....is wrong.
"ain't nothing original under the some, only thing that matters is how it's done"
Yes they are unique, but only in relative terms. If you can't hear parts of Led Zep, Zappa, Rush, Krimson to name a scant few you're playing ignorant. They totally deserve praise for their originality (especially in today's sea of average) I would never take that away from them, but you can't claim this stuffs comes from thin air.
No, that's Primus.
@@jimhedberg1495 Primus sucks!
Seriously though, Tim Alexander is great.
This guy is a tool. Who cares what somebody who's never heard of led sell in thinks about anything...
Yet alone Tool....
Just that moment when he backhands he cymbal with a smile. He knew he nailed it. He's the best living drummer.
That swag!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums yep
Best drummer of all time! GENIUS
One thing I love about Danny is he's so relaxed when he plays. Literally playing the craziest shit but makes it look like childs play, wish they'd do more of these.
They like to keep things very mysterious between the band so I'd hope so but I really don't know if they ever will.
He's Zen alright
That is the main point I pull from this vid. As an artist I get it. I know where my stuff is and how I am gonna use it. My muscle memory is peek, as is Dany's. Every time I watch I say" God he is so comfortable in his kit, his zone!."
It's like he is wearing the drum cage, so comfortable.
they like to go for a more mysterious vibe, but also, you can't tense up or get super crazy when doing fills or rolls, unless you are playing a different kind of music, like metallica or megadeth.
As a musician. I've always felt like tool is an art for artists. It is unbelievably unique, beautiful timing signatures and lyrically, Keenan is a one of a kind singer and poet.
Agree Anthony
MJK is one of my few personal heroes. The Art of Work is a great look into who he is, if you've never watched it.
I’m an old dude, and I agree. I’ve always thought Yes was just for musicians too
This band is my my 4th favorite. Red hot chill peppers Alice in chains Metallica an then tool I love em
To truly appreciate what they’re doing you have to have some knowledge.
He definitely doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. What an amazing drummer!! 👍👍
Danny playing filthy drums still looks like he’s ordering food at the drive thru. Looks so chill.
Totally in control Nick!
Danny has said he's heavily influenced by John Bonham and Neil Peart, two of the most legendary drummers that ever existed. Danny is totally up in the top three, in my opinion.
The 3 drummers you named are my 3 favorite. 😂
@@Ascending11 me too!
Bill Bruford as well, who also belongs in the top 5 for sure
Lenny White as well
Check out Carmine Appice! He is worth checking out!
Danny Carey is the best percussionist in the history of mankind
One of the greats!
What I love most about this song is that you return to the same pattern from the beginning of the song at the very end, but it's like after the journey of the song you get it. You know the answer to the question asked at the start. It's beautiful and enlightening structure
'where can they go from here?! "
Never ask where Tool can go next, just join us on the bus
Yes the tool bus no other bus will do !!
My guess is we will all be dead when they come out with a next level album.
Mjk can retire and make wine.
The rest of the band can do instrumental shows with backing tracks...of mjk at his apex.
This 3/4 of a show we're dropping serious coin on recently...keep that shit.
Nothing ruins a great performance more than lackluster vocals.
Us tool fans are in denial.
It'll be a bus full of cremated remains and animated corpses all traveling 20 years to hear the next album 😂
Marry me.
His mom is a member at the golf course I work at so I have met him a few times he’s a big dude and super nice
That's fantastic Robert!!!
Lucky
I just got to see him once from an awful seat way to the side highest it could’ve been
*wouldve changed the second time if this none sense didn’t happen*
@@StrangerE0ns same here. I was taken to a Tool concert to Redrocks when I was around 9 years old.
thats awesome 🤘⛳️
@@StrangerE0ns I will never see them. I’m 14 and when corona is over they will be dead
They're one of the best "tone/mix" rock bands in the history of everything
Danny is a legend.. He is one of my top three favorites....
Tool is the only band on earth where the drummer IS the attraction and never disappoints in the past 20 plus years of just killing it. Dude is pure power.
Could argue that point with Rush lol, technically they were first
@@yoshi867 Fun fact, Danny Carry is 6'5", and Neil Peart is 6'4".
Tool is just modern day Rush.
except instead of 3 of the most talented individual musicians at their role in the band... Tool has 4.
I've always felt that Tool is our generations Pink Floyd more than a Led Zeppelin
I feel the same way.
I totally agree. I’ve always felt the same way.
Tool is this generation’s Tool. They are neither Zeppelin nor Floyd....So, in the same way that Tool is cast as this generation’s Pink Floyd, others will be equating artists of the future as their generation’s Tool. It’s time to give Tool their due and call them exactly what they are; a once in a generation - perhaps lifetime - band.
@@GreenGrowSpaces That's fine and good, and I agree to an extent, but if you can't draw comparisons from the past then why would you worry about the future's past comparisons?
Jason Storey King Crimson
Art for artists, all the band assemble is just something so well done it’s mesmerizing, I can’t die until I go to a live performance of tool.
Do it!
I went to my first a year and a half ago. You must go.
Pound for massive pound he's gotta be elevated to genius level drummer status for every reason ...artistry,musicality, effortless flow between time signatures, ego less, transcentalism, effortlessness, inspirational and creativeness... he hits them all.
