Tool - Lateralus - Johnkew Drum Cover

- Опубліковано 22 січ 2016
- I've done a fair amount of Tool covers over the past few years, but there have been a few songs that I've really wanted to try, but have waited, for various reasons. Lateralus is one of my favorite songs, but I've held off recording it because the longer I listen and play along with Tool songs, the more I learn about Danny Carey's talent and style. Lateralus is one of those iconic songs that I really wanted to do justice. Looking back on some of my early videos, I had a lot of fun playing, but in hindsight, there were a lot of technical elements that I missed. I don't regret playing them, but I'm glad I've waited on this one.
I'm still nowhere near Carey's level of playing, but I think I understand enough of his techniques and style that I'm very happy with the combination of feeling and technique that this song requires. Regardless, once again I had a ton of fun trying to play along with one of Tool's arrangements, and I hope that this energy translates well through this video. By the end of the song, I felt like I had tunnel vision. Almost like a trance. I love that feeling, and it's one of the reasons why I keep playing the drums. I've never really captured that energy with anything else.
Hopefully I find some time to make a behind the scenes video about this song and recording. There is a lot of background that won't fit in this description box.
As always, thanks for watching, and for your feedback. And if you feel so inclined, please share.

The bit between 0.00 and 9.28 is killer
Indeed
Sort of went downhill after that though. 😋
Oh, that was an amazing part.
yeah, best part
@@mrkrunch4340 , yeah it really tapered off after that
Thanks for your comments everyone; I read each and every one and I'm blown away by the amount of great feedback!
+johnkew The perfect gift for my birthday, thank you so much.. You Rock!!!
+Lorenzo Pasquetti a gift for your birthday was a guy playing a cover of a song? Odd
+johnkew Johnny you're a gun but your kit is missing a gong, ha ha ha, mad work like usual.
+johnkew open hats at the start detract for mine otherwise great
+johnkew I've been waiting for this for ages. killed it man
8:05 is no one gonna talk about that?!?!?
insane skill!
Oooow what was that shiiit
You didn't catch the one at 7:20 ?
No gong but that substitute was definitely legit
Oh, I talked about it. Watching it for the 58th time, the most impressive part is where he catches it.
Right behind the ear. Incredible.
A very close friend of mine died 7 years ago on accident. He was the one who introduced me to Tool and this was the first song he made me listen. I feel in love with the band instantly. Every 24 of March I open a beer, listen to this song and see this video. hoping that someday I can pay tribute to his memory by doing a drum cover.
🍻 Here's to your friend, friend. I hope you're doing well.
Danny Carrey is one of the smartest drummers i've listened to in my life.
then listen to more music. you have just started
ive listened to dave weckl a lot.i didnt say that danny got crazy skills , just that he makes smart creative beats
I don't like dave weckl. But depends on the contest in which you are playing. Let's say danny has a lot of space in a band like tool in which he acts like the main force. In another band he probably would have less freedom.
when you got skills like Danny you will command that kind of space. Also he could probably crush the skulls of the other band members with 1 hand :D
Desperation Mixtape You're way off base here. What makes a good drummer is your opinion. In my opinion you don't need to be flailing and fast, or have to double bass the entire song. To me Danny Carey doesn't add any junk. Every beat has a purpose and he's extremely technical. His work is fun to listen to without the music in the background. Only The Rev, Ginger Baker, Bonham, and Carey stand alone.
Love the Fibonaci spiral on the drum. nice touch.
great
Agreed!
A very sexy touch. I'm aroused
+TheBrawlingBrothers I believe it's Fibonacci. Looks like its made of super tiny pieces of tape too. Must have took a lot of patience.
Windows XP A Fibonacci is the most ancient form of contraceptive devices in recorded history. Circa 700 B.C. It involved a string and a teaspoon of sand, and in some cultures a quarter inch of parchment paper.
07:06 is my favourite Danny Carey fill of all time, it's just so unbelievably brutal at that part in the song.
Agree
4:45 too. gives me chills every time.
My air drumming would never be as good as his performance 🤘
I can't even air drum Danny, so difficult that he doesn't even let you play with him
Fact: The best Tool covers on youtube are from Johnkew
Delta Empire has left the chat.
These kids doing 46 & 2 deserve an honerable mention as well, but yes this is a pro.
I think my favorite cover of Lateralus is gotta be that one dude who played it on tin cans
Totalmente de acuerdo
He is quite skilled, but I cannot in good conscious agree that he is the best until he covers triad. Once he does that we can talk…
The stick flip at 07:20 is basically a mic drop.
hahahahahahahaha, like in coming to America..... randy Watson.
Imagine being at a Tool concert when that exact moment kicks in!! Everybody goes f*cking apeshit (including me if I was there :) )
8:01 bro
Yes, yes it was! It was his fuck yea I killed that hard ass shit, time to party this rock groove! It was written all over his face
I had to read the this to confirm I actually seen that Lol yes jaw dropping performance
Damn bro, the 4:55-7:18 section is one of the most glorious moments of drums in metal for sure.
Churrumais Hernandez in all music
Idk I like 0:00 to 9:28
5:39 This is the part where the polyrhythms start to get really mind-bending! Great job!
When i was learning polyrhythms and multi limb independence I,d go cross eyed literally..........haha. I found it impossible to continue reading sheet music so had to learn the basic patterns then go by ear. Only after some time for new songs did this stop but if I tried a new one I,d go cross eye blind again. Lol.........
Yeah, you can tell this is the part where he really has to concentrate. You can see billions of synapses firing all at once!! :)
@@JAContes by no means am I a polyrhythms god. But I found this particular best not all that difficult to play actually. There are other parts in the song that are far harder to play. Of course everyone is different;)
@@Alex-pb1iy Harder, maybe but this part takes the most concentration. Like I said, you can see him in super focus mode.
@@JAContes I think at least for me, mindset is a huge part of it. When I was learning it I was looking at that part as just another beat and not a complex series of polyrhythms. For me if I looked at it like that I think it would be several times more difficult. When I look at polyrhythms like that instead of a basic beat, their harder for me to play. Again that’s just me. I’m not better or more gifted than anyone else nor would I ever claim to be. I’m purely speaking of my journey.
Although I do remember a video a long time ago where a guy was explaining that part and said it was “playing over 8’s” I with I could find it and his explanation.
Take it easy!
Stop being modest and scream loudly from rooftops:
"I can nail Tool drum tracks!"
How many do you think can claim that??
This is just awesome!!!!
Fuze TheHostage learn to swim
....4
This one is easy.. With enough practice and selling one's soul to tbe devil.. You can do it..
This guy is just amazing, but we must admit the brightest mind that created such a masterpiece song
I can pull this off, took me months of work.
7:07 I literally stood up of how amazing that was XD
While still very hard to play, it's probably the easier bit as it's in regular time signature. The 5:37 is truly impressive
@@sealofapproval3163 yeah, but it just has this overpowering feel to it that i just feel is great.
7:08 thank me later
The whole thing is.absolutely. A.W.E.S.O.M.E! Total badass!
Wow
Watching him hit that bell so accurately after going through that whole fill gives me goosebumps
7:07 Arguably the best fill in the whole damn song 😁
Holy mother of god that was good! What a pleasure to watch someone with such a gift. Its reassuring that in this world there are still people out there pursuing art and expression in positive ways. Much respect.
Brettrun R I agree! The concentration for this song is mind boggling... incredible!!!!
Amen to that...
It's the gift, the gift of cold hard unadulterated practice
Omg amazing stuff!!
Agreed :)
This cover is way better than Meytal's version. You seem to 'get' what Danny Carey's drumming is all about which is playing with feeling. It really comes through in the sound.
I agree, she love taps and smiles to much. Drip sweat in music
+Rick Thompson meytal doesn't feel the music.
+Brannigan Farnsworth I agree
Brannigan Farnsworth Exactly!
+Lord Casodi I like John's version better than Meytal's as well but there's no need to bash.
If ya'll don't know much about drumming, lemme just tell you that the foot intrance at 2:03 requires such a high level of independence and it's incredibly hard to keep both feet running like that while still playing fives with the hands
Preach for this drummer!!
9:04 Well done bro!! Take a deep breathe and get a cold beer to yourself from me.
5:36 is one of the greatest Danny Carey moments in any song in the Tool library.
Federalist 46 the high hat rhythm right before/leading into it is fucking incredible
@@Proppur_ I cannot listen to one without listening to the other
The transition is mindblowing... Every time.
*watches drum cover full of intricate and complex parts - subscribes cause of cool drumstick twirling*
I haven't seen anyone else cover Lateralus this well. My favorite Tool song and you've done it justice, friend. More than that, it's inspiring.
I have a dream to have a place to play drums one day where I can learn to master such a song. My parents didn't have money when I was young so I didn't have a place to play the drums. I'm 29, busted my ass and I own my own apartment now. I'm working my way to owning a townhome so I can soundproof the shit out of one of the rooms and begin to play. I may never have the opportunity to make a career of it, but I'd be content just being able to play. It would make me the happiest guy in the world just to achieve this one dream of mine.
Similar journey as you brother. Get a TD-27, thank me later.
@@shubham6288 thanks, my friend. Definitely noted. Out of my price range ATM, but I've put it on the list. Once it's on the list, it doesn't come off until it's mine. 😂 Much appreciated.
I consider this song to be Tool’s masterpiece. It’s got all the emotion and complexity but they never get lost in the weeds. Nearly 10 minutes and not a single note is wasted.
Keep at it. You'll get there. Drums are so fun to play. All the best.
Im a guitarist and bassist but ive always had a deep respect for drummers and strive to be able to play like them.
Again goose bumps bro!!!! One small thing. The snare roll at 4:45 I remember seeing Danny live and he does that with a single hand......
wow... is that even possible?
Norphes well he’s a God so...
No, I checked a Drum Cam of Danney and he plays it the same way as John Kew
@@norphes3865 gravity blast!
I dont have a drumkit , but its so much fun to play along the starting parts of the song with pens lmao
I tap on the table with my hands every time I hear this song ;)
Roughnegg ikr its so much fun to play along lol
Aakash Balaji i thought you said "with penis"
@@AakashBalajiCyborg Haha thats the only "easy" part of the song, the rest is pretty complicated, with hard time signatures changes, polyrhythms between foots and hands etc, but the beginning is very cool and indeed, fun to play along to:)
The John Wick of drumming
God dude, your playing is amazing and all, but the trick at 7:20 is just sick, and you did it in a moment of the song that is so climactic, i was quite turned on XD
Francesco Cacciante Agree. That was badass
Dude is Demi-God.
I first discovered this video about 2 years ago and i've watched it probably 30-50 times and each time I discover some new little groove that blows my mind.
that's the beauty of tool's music
Don't usually comment on drum cover videos, especially on Tool covers. In fact this is the first one I HAD to comment on. This is by far the best cover of Lateralus I've seen on UA-cam. I may find a similar one, but I'm 100% sure I won't find a BETTER one since this one was basically flawless. Well played, John....
Thanks for chiming in, I appreciate the feedback!
I like the fibonacci reference on the tom next to the snare.Great job!!!
Nice eye! Also the read shirt with Native American reference.
man youre deep...fibonacci! =)
Aztek Tacquio
I guess he...
*spiraled out*
yeah...this guy does acid
Love the Fibonacci, but even more so, the placement of the mic on that tom!
Man, it just flows through you. You are the drums and the drums are you. Fucking skills. Best of luck to you
Thanks man, that's one of the most fun feeling when drumming: when it feels like you're just getting out of the way and letting that energy take over.
there is really nothing like it. its an actual high. incredibly intoxicating.,😊
I don't think people realize how difficult Tools time is to keep, and then this dude has it on lock down! Clean, precise and technical master piece. 👌 well done good sir. Your Tool covers are incredible
7:10...jaw drops to the floor...
5:37
Jesus Christ! This part.
This is the part that caught my attention when I first listened to this song so many years ago. This is the type of shit you normally hear in a Jazz-Fusion piece. I like it because as a non-drummer I find it is so confusing and unusual but also weirdly satisfying. And you nailed it. I only have a rudimentary understanding of how drums work but I bet it must have been tricky to play. Kudos, keep spiralling out!
This part of the song is insanely, difficult, I agree with your words every one bit, essentially, the drums and vocals are playing five measures for every four measures played by the bass and guitar. This means that they disconnect, and then loop back around to each other, if that helps you understand at all.
For more information on this sort of Rhythm checkout polyrhythm. Also, this sort of use of polyrhythm is pretty common in Progressive bands and djent. if you really like polyrhythm stuff like tool, I would check out tesseract. Every singer that's ever been a part of tesseract is world class and the drummer is a beast. There are some scream vocals, but mainly their stuff is just highly technical with clean vocals.
---
Sorry, a quick addendum to this. I forgot that this was on Lateralus. This particular song is heavily influenced by the Fibonacci sequence. In general though, tool builds heavily on polyrhythm.
@@michmyers73
Thanks mate!
I have played with around 22 drums and only 2 could pull it off. That is how hard that it is.
Not only is it hard to mentally intuit but also physically demanding to play with both of your feet like that. 4 hits on a single pedal is about the maximum you can do with technique, and it's very difficult. (beyond 4 you are just ripped, not using technique)
Honestly, that was the most flawless performance of this masterpiece I've ever seen. Danny Carey not included. Spiral out, brother. Keep going. +1 sub.
The part after the solo where it get much simpler and slower it feel like unloading your soul. Amazing.
Tool is one of the few bands I have been listening to consistently since I was 17 and now in my mid 40s still enjoying all of their music with the same passion
I've been anticipating this one for a long time. Here we go.
The polyrhythm at ua-cam.com/video/iicYWl3w2rU/v-deo.htmlm40s is insane.
ua-cam.com/video/iicYWl3w2rU/v-deo.htmlm40s - ua-cam.com/video/iicYWl3w2rU/v-deo.htmlm20s just left me with a huge grin on my face.
Awesome work John, I aspire to one day be able to pull this off.
+luke walden thanks man
I found myself clapping at the end, alone in my room like "dude, you deserve a medal"
i just kept thinking to myself no way he nails the entire song
flawless
I don’t know what’s happening, but UA-cam is back to recommending videos of this channel…I ain’t even mad, this is 100% the best cover on UA-cam. Patiently waiting forJohnKew’s return.
Watching this in glorious 2160p, my eyes have never known such beauty..
2160p ? does that exists ?
4K
Effect of spirals maybe
Justin chancellor is playing drums. Really good as well
Best drum cover artist there is! PERIOD! Everything that guy plays is absolutely perfect
8 years and this still goes hard 🔥
When you threw both sticks and came crashing back down I have to admit a bit of wee came out. Absolutely amazing.
+Alpha Bet lol
The double stick flip at 7:20. Holy hell that was awesome. :D :D So much control and really into the song. Well done track.
5:37
Wow. How in the hell do you play such a weird, unorthodox sounding beat?
Incredible
@@shanecombs1993 It sounds incredible
Wow... just wow!
its a crime that this guy only has 20k subs
jesus ive seen so many shitty unproductive channels with 10 times the subs he has
Dude.
I have watched what feels like thousands of covers of thousands of songs.
This is probably the best cover of any song I have seen in my lifetime.
I strive to be someone who can play as good as you and with emotions just as strong.
Plus, THAT GODDAMN TRICK AT 7:20 WAS THE MOST BADASS ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!
You just gained a huge fan man!
Keep it up, that was as tight as can be.
Thanks man! I was debating using a stick trick on this one, as I didn't want to seem to trivialize Carey's playing, but it just felt right. If there's any Tool song that lends itself to a visual flourish, it's this ending!
eight years later and I still coming back
So awesome thanks man!
1:38 At this moment I realized that I need to learn to swim
I was at the beggining of this video and for a moment I thought I clicked at a aenima cover
There are many Carey covers out there, but few that capture the feeling, vibe, essence - whatever you want to call it. This one sure does. Danny would be proud. Well done, man.
That was totally AMAZING to watch. Thank you
I have watched these videos for years to get my streaming Tool fix. I love watching you play and your videos are top notch. I will keep coming back!
I think its safe to say this is best song tool has made
it is never safe to say anything like that. It is what you think, that doesnt mean it's absolute truth. There is no such thing as "best" in music, especially tool's. If that's your favorite song, I totally understand, but it is not the best tool song. there is no best tool song.
tom just waste a good 15 seconds of his life
what ?
it was his fucking opinion dumbass, and it probably wasn't even that serious, wtf was that paragraph of yours
Am I not allowed to write what I want ? I do what I want with my time and my thoughts, no ?
4:55 That polyrythm!
That’s one of the most awe inspiring things I’ve ever seen. Utterly amazing piece of drumming John
This just made my day thanks
the sound of those drums is deep, low and brutal...so lovely
Sometimes when I listen to music I like to close my eyes and feel the release of pleasure. Today with this video I managed to get that same sensation, but without closing my eyes. You really drive me through a musical journey, especially in a song that features such a rich drumming. Been expecting this one for quite some time. Thank you
+Camilo Venegas Thanks for this great feedback, it means a lot to me!
Thank you for doing these tool covers. They're all so brilliant and a genuine pleasure to watch.
CLEAN! perfect!
Closest I have heard to Danny himself and I have had the good fortune to see Tool live 6 times. Bravo! You kill it where other people covering it are off
Goddamn amazing.
So glad that this video showed up in my feed. I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it!
Bloody awesome 😎
John.. seriously.. I can't even.
You OWNED this. I don't know what else to say..
Congratulations..
love the fibonacci spiral on the floor drum :)
That was freaking amazing!!
I’ve watched your videos over the years, always fun. 👍
7:18 Ninjutsu! and look how does it feel the groove, awesome! \m/
Been waiting on this! Awesome dude
Thank You. Absolutely Amazing!!
Amazing. Thank you
Tool's music always imbues a sublime sense of satisfaction, but Lateralus by far takes me on a journey more thoroughly than most anything else they've done. Power and subtle grace flow in equal measure in this piece, and it must be an incomparable trip to directly participate in it as you have done here. I am so envious...but I am also just as thankful to you for giving us a glimpse of the effort behind performing such a masterpiece.
This is one of my favourites and you nailed it.
I don´t tired to see it over and over again!
Man, that looks like fun. Thanks!
You inspire me to practice, practice, practice!! The amount of time & effort you have committed yourself to break down all the intrical parts & pieces of the Alien known as Danny Carey is absolutely incredible!!! I cannot applaud your efforts enough to justify what you are achieving! Brilliant!! Just Brilliant!!
Please upload a tutorial for 5:39 :D I start glitching when I try to play that part xD
Great job!
Thats just perfect
Thank you made my day
I couldn't help but smile from 6:39-7:18. Nice job!
7:07 was so satisfying to watch cause I’ve been trying to learn this too
INCREDIBLE!!
How wonderful! I don't get tired of looking at it. Thank you so much!
Damn I need to come back every now and then to watch you absolute nail my favourite song from my favourite band. And of course it is so shallow to talk about those stick flips, but damn those were the icing on the cake cause you look soooo "in the zone" man. And I love your expression right at the last ten seconds, when you know you nailed it and you look so satisfied. My oh my John, you are crazy and so talented.
well played mate. even got the snare throw off for the poly rhythm section. nice detail.
Incredible, amazing !!!!
Spectacular
Шикарный драм шикарного трэка. Ни добавить, ни убавить😍
First time I saw him cover tool was when he did invincible.... and I thought, what’s with that annoying smirk he’s got on his face. And it annoyed me for about 3 more mins... By the end I fully understood it... If I could cover Danny Carey flawlessly, not only would I have a permanent smirk, I’d have a raging erection all day as well.. great cover.
Amazing, gives me chills. Thanks for uploading!
Amazing!!
Damn man! Keeping those weird timings, flawlessly... Had me smiling ear to ear. Rock TF out!
Fuck that was amazing. Not the first video of yours to make me teary eyed just from sheer awesomeness haha. Job. Well. Done.
Love the way you play. Thanks so much for sharing these videos.
