During that period of time the Doobie Brothers lived next door to my place, well one door down. We got along great. My roommate was a jazz drummer so music was everywhere. They did piss me off before I let it go. They parked their big truck, trailer on our road in our little dirt road town of Montara, south of San Francisco on the coast. We couldn't get around the big rig to drive up the hill! They were nice people all in all. Also used to see Neil Young come down from his mountain ranch to buy perogies at the little Italian Mkt. The cool thing was none of them wanted or were treated special. They just wanted to hide away from the public and be real. It was a great time to be alive.
I was in my high school marching band in the mid 70s. Every time we played China Grove and Long Train Runnin'...you'd think we were having a party, haha!! We had a blast playing the Doobies' songs.
"We are more connected than we think." 🤟🔥 Great music has that ability. It's timeless, pays no mind to societal norms, and has a gravitational pull stronger than a black hole. Keep at it, Jamel!
And...we love that you fill our request line. In the 70’s we would call our local radio stations and request songs, then wait for the DJ to say our name and play the song! See where we’re comin’ from?
Texas Magnolia I remember calling KLOS in LA and requesting that smell by Skynyrd. It was memorial weekend and we were headed to the kern river..the DJ came on and said I'm playing this for a very sexy lady...said my name...we were screaming in the car! It was awesome. Such simple things..
Yes! I have been trying to figure out what this reminded me of! You hit it on the head. It is a lot like waiting to hear the song you requested on the radio. 😊
That's right, we did. The actual DJ would answer his own phone. One time I requested a song the guy didn't have, but the next day he dug up another record by the same band and played it just for me. (Thanks, Al Otero at KABQ!) Many years later I called a Bay Area DJ and asked for Rush..... That did not go well. He couldn't give me a straight answer as to why, but basically corporate HQ had decided that "that music" wasn't right for "this demographic ". Psssshhhh. Thanks Jamel for bringing back the good times.
What makes the Doobie's so great is their variety. Black Water to China Grove sums it up nicely. *Every*one on the dance floor with that initial guitar lick.

When I was 15, I walked to a Doobie Brothers concert. Blossom Music Center near Akron Ohio. Was worth the 7 mile trek with my closest friend.. We ended up crashing at his brother's house cause we couldn't make it back home at 3 am. Stoned from the air in the concert grounds. Memories...
This song is very emotional for me. The tune came out about a month before I started my freshman year in college. I was in the dorm room and my roommate takes out his Gibson SG and plays the intro from China Grove. I was a big city kid and he was from a farm near a town of 100 population. We were from two very different worlds and music brought us together for life. I live in MN and lives in CA. We had lunch together a couple of months ago.

First. China Grove is from 1973. Hit up Long Train Running, Black Water, Listen To The Music, It Keeps You Runnin', Minute By Minute, Real Love, etc. Tons of great Doobie Brothers. Oh yeah..."which Doobie you be"-Raj. Lol.
Jamal , your reactions put such a big smile on my face and does my heart so good. Watching these videos reminds me of about 20 or 25 years ago when my teenage daughters wanted to introduce me to so.e " new" music . They started playing C C R and the doobies and skynyrd. I'm living in my 34th address in places all over the world, but was blessed to live in the San Antonio area for over 20 years, and in my daily commute passed through China Grove twice a day, so I love this song, even given it's two glaring errors. First, NO ONE from the San Antonio area refers to the city as "San Antone"--it is ALWAYS "San Antonio." Second, the Samurai were exclusive to Japan, so there's no reason decedents of China would have any connection to the Samurai or Samurai swords. Despite these faux pas, this is still in my top 5 favorite songs, and always brings my soul back to my beloved San Antonio.
China Grove really exists just northeast of San Antonio. Now in 1972 what happened there, stays there. In person these guys are even better and those guitars go right through you. Great to watch a 40yo man turn on to the Doobies-you have the heart and soul of a love child of the 60s-70s💙😎🎧
I was in my room one night listening to AM radio when the DJ came on and said he had a brand new song by the Doobie Brothers that we were about to hear for the first time on that station. Then he suggested we should turn the volume way up. I was blown away immediately. I never tire of hearing China Grove (or any Doobies for that matter).
The reason you like these suggested songs are three fold. 1. Because they are truly fantastic songs... from the best time in recording history! Recording studio technology had risen to a level past its infancy of Elvis and The Beatles and while still recorded in analog, these technological breakthroughs inspired incredible creativity from many bands and sound engineers. These songs come from the peak in recorded history IMHO (not that other music geneations aren't written or recorded well). 2. Because it's absolutely not by mistake or luck that these songs were hits. Literally millions upon millions of die-hard critical music lovers scrutinized every song from their favorite bands and theses are the songs they (we) LOVE to this day. Lastly, it's a credit to you, Jamel, to devise a channel by which you are told what to listen to by subscribers and in doing so, you actually listen and react with a microscopic ear to the melodys, rhythms and nuaunces that made these songs f'n great. Kudos to you for your ingenuity and your channel's success! Guitartec
Around ten year ago, my 19 year old son came with me to see The Doobie Brothers open up for Bad Company in concert and he didn't realize he know some Doobie Brothers songs until he heard them during the show but he really lit up when he heard Chinagrove. This is such a classic song. I love watching younger people discover this music we grew up with and in some ways took for granted. I don't think we realized we''d still be loving this music 40 and 50 years later. I still buy CDs and albums and still love my music from this era as well as discovering new bands which play this kind of music. Keep enjoying this music.
Jamal seen doobies 43 times live in my lifetime! Tons of stories met and partyed with all of them! They are still going strong! Finally inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. I suggest Clear as The Driven Snow. Amazing as you like to say. Love you bro!
Jamel I was so fortunate to be in my late teens early 20's in the late 60's early 70's. I got to see so many of these bands live, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ELO, Meatloaf, The Moody Blues, The Guess Who, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath and the list goes on. I wish you could have been with me, you would have had the time of your life!
My boyfriend loved this band, particularly "The Captain and Me' album from around 1972. I too became such a fan! So much so that he bought tickets and took me 125 miles away to a concert in Dallas. This was in my senior year in high school (73-74). We married that spring and here we are 46 years later still rockin' on.

Guitartec
Thanks I Appreciate you🙏🏾
Love me some Doobie Brothers "black water","Jesus is just alright" ☮️
Around ten year ago, my 19 year old son came with me to see The Doobie Brothers open up for Bad Company in concert and he didn't realize he know some Doobie Brothers songs until he heard them during the show but he really lit up when he heard Chinagrove. This is such a classic song. I love watching younger people discover this music we grew up with and in some ways took for granted. I don't think we realized we''d still be loving this music 40 and 50 years later. I still buy CDs and albums and still love my music from this era as well as discovering new bands which play this kind of music. Keep enjoying this music.
Glad you did this one but the quintessential Doobie Brothers is Black Water
Gotta be next 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Jamal seen doobies 43 times live in my lifetime! Tons of stories met and partyed with all of them! They are still going strong! Finally inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. I suggest Clear as The Driven Snow. Amazing as you like to say. Love you bro!
Hell's Angels house band in early '70's. Support 81.

@@cheezyridr Aw, think nothin' of it. Your welcome.
When they said San Antone...I was hooked! Lone Star State!!! God Bless the people who helped them!
Black Water, Listen To The Music,
Oh! Listen to the Music! Yes!
Dooble Brothers are perfection in their music. No one could match their style, and many tried!!! Thanks, Jamel for playing their classics.
"Sout City Midnight Lady" is the softer side of the Doobie Brothers, but it's my ex-wife's favorite and you'll dig it.
Another great Doobie's track with Michael McDonald is "Taking It To The Streets". Another fire track with a potent message.
