This for me has always been the quintessential Steely Dan AMAZING SONG! Living in Tifton Georgia 73-74! This entire album is solid epic Diamond status to me! Elliot Randall crushes it!
YES to your "executive decision" to react to requests of songs you may have "heard" before. The thing about the quality of most of this music is the deeper and more attentively we listen, the more we notice and appreciate. You are dead right that we may have heard and noticed a "hook" "groove" or "refrain/chorus." A closer than cursory listen reveals so much more. This is what makes great music not only stand up to repeated listening. Music of that quality almost requires repeated listening to fully grasp and appreciate.
My son's favorite Steely Dan song. He is 17 now but he saw them live at age 8. He can't explain why to this day. He will play it from time to time in his room. I think it the harmonies. One of my favorites as well.

This is such a good freakin song. One of my all time faves from them. I could say that about so many of their tunes though. This album had a little more of the rock/pop flavor with the jazz hints in there and obviously the brilliant studio mix. Always playing with time signatures too. So good.

I think there's a difference between "hearing" a song and actively "listening" to it. There are plenty of songs I've heard countless times on the radio or whatever, but I've never took the time to attentively listen to music, analyze the different parts, discover what I like about the music, and try to figure out what the lyrics are about.
When Walter Becker passes away a couple of years ago....someone posted a Steely Dan video to Facebook that was pretty cool. Their classic...'FM'.....but set to a nighttime flyover ( by a drone ) of the Empire State Building. I think it was the 50th anniversary of the installation of an FM antenna atop the tower. And so a radio station arranged for colorful lights to play in sync to the song.

This takes me back to Chickamauga Dam when I was just a little bitty fellow, between 3 and 6 years old. Oh yes! I still remember it! That was the hot summertime swimming hole just above Chattanooga, TN. Ah, the warm sun beaming down on the beautiful sunbathers that was way too old for me at the time, the smell of tanning oil in the air, and the crisp sound of Steely Dan on the AM radio. That was a time!

There are plenty of songs I've heard countless times on the radio or whatever, but I've never took the time to attentively listen to music, analyze the different parts, discover what I like about the music, and try to figure out what the lyrics are about.

When Walter Becker passes away a couple of years ago....someone posted a Steely Dan video to Facebook that was pretty cool. Their classic...'FM'.....but set to a nighttime flyover ( by a drone ) of the Empire State Building. I think it was the 50th anniversary of the installation of an FM antenna atop the tower. And so a radio station arranged for colorful lights to play in sync to the song.

This takes me back to Chickamauga Dam when I was just a little bitty fellow, between 3 and 6 years old. Oh yes! I still remember it! That was the hot summertime swimming hole just above Chattanooga, TN. Ah, the warm sun beaming down on the beautiful sunbathers that was way too old for me at the time, the smell of tanning oil in the air, and the crisp sound of Steely Dan on the AM radio. That was a time!
