What do you use as reference? Steely Dan are well known everywhere, especially among musicians. Non-musician friends my age are hit or miss, but we're only in our early 20s. When I studied music, EVERYONE knew and loved the Dan. Didn't matter if you were 15 or 75, working or studying at that school, they were very looked up to. One of my biggest inspirations for sure, and my all time favorite band.
Jamel is the perfect storm, he is funny, smart, smooth, open-minded and detailed, which attracts like-minded people with incredible music taste so he gets the best music from many genres. Jamel knows how to attract taste,, genius!
Walter Becker completely underrated guitarist. Awesome band, I only got to see them once before Becker passed, but it was an amazing concert...this is my favorite song by Steely Dan.
I love this man. I love his reactions, and his smile is gorgeous. And, because I love everything that Donald Fagen has produced, I love the way Jamel appreciates this music. You can see how much he enjoys it. He is so full of goodness and kindness. I am 72 year old, but this man, and Steely Dan's music, make me feel young.
I think I speak for all the ladies here, you are adorable. Such a great personality & charm. Keep smiling. Keep dancing. You are bringing joy to people & reminding us of music we love.
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were perfectionists in the recording studio. They took a lot pride in what they did. And the all the percussion instruments that are being played throughout this song make it great too.
Steely Dan was my all time favorite band back then while my friends liked Kiss... I just enjoyed the sound better than everything else that was playing on the radio at the time
This little ol white grandma was thrilled to find I still remembered the lyrics to this fabulous song from my junior high days. Thanks Jamel for letting me see these all fresh again through your reactions!
@Flying Up Yup! My 75 year old Mum is a big part of the reason I love music like this. Between her and my dad this stuff (along with a lot of other non-pop music) was what I grew up on.
My dad was an artist and when he would finish work, he loved to come home and unwind by drawing while listening to Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, ZZTOP, War, ElChicano etc. Inevitably I would do some dumb shit that would get me put in “timeout” and I would be there, nose in the corner, grooving back-and-forth to this very song. Eventually my father realized putting me in timeout was really not a punishment and stopped. Thank you Steely Dan.
Steely Dan is already my all-time favorite band, and as I grow older, I only appreciate their music more. Their smart-assed lyrics and jazz-based rock grooves age very, very well.

You likely know that the Dan's recordings are frequently used by live sound engineers to set up their systems. Steely Dan production always emphasized mic choice and placement and avoided the use of EQ as much as possible, making their recordings something of a reference for clarity and purity.
Man I love watching Jamel do his thing. What a great attitude and appreciation for all kinds of music. His expressions and opinions are so honest and refreshing. Keep it up!
This band has an incredibly interesting history. They even launched The Doobie Brothers, as Michael McDonald was originally with Steely Dan.... These were great musicians that were apparently very flawed individuals that couldn't get along with each other... Amazing they were able to make so many great songs.
Wrong the Doobies were already a hit machine before Michael McDonald came over,he changed their style which I didn’t care for but that’s another story.
Each of the band’s songs contains a story & that’s just one reason the tunes draw a listener in. Plus, Steely Dan always enlisted grade-A talent for the studio. Stone-cold pros.
I feel the 70's were FULL of QUALITY (Hit and Non-hit) music of a variety of flavours/flavors which began in the 1950's going right thru the 70's and inching across what some would consider 'The Finish Line' by early to mid 1980's. Either way, some of us didn't know how good we had it.

To rhyme with hangin' in the next verse. It's that sort of breaking the rules that makes great artists--I never even noticed that until now, even though I've heard this maybe a hundred times. That's how perfect it is.

I feel so privileged, I got to listen to some great bands including Steely Dan, I feel that musically the 70’s was a great decade, so many bands producing great tunes like this.
first song on the first album. imagine starting your career like this. we loved the AM version and then when we got to hear the long version on FM radio it was mind blowing. The DAN never gets old
I forgot they sang this song! They had so many hits and I never knew who sang them. Seeing them through other peoples eyes I get to hear the words when all I used to do is hum the tune and dance!
Jamel... you are adorable!! I love watching your reactions to all the music I have loved since being a kid. I have a request... please react to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "You Got Lucky". You will love the beat, vocals and video!! Trust me... you won't be disappointed!! Thanks for keeping us smiling during this bleak time!! God Bless!!
Steely Dan made the seventies bearable! They had so many great Songs and smooth performances. And all of it well recorded, just like Pink Floyd, because they were perfectionists. I’m glad you found them now. And appreciate them. I sure do. 🎸👏🏻😎
I can remember when this song first hit the radio waves back in the 70s I was probably about 14 or 15 years old and that Chorus Line is just so catchy, as soon as you hear the song you automatically are a fan!!
That solo made Me a Dan fan back in junior high. Playing solos with the complexity of jazz musicians over rock beats is what separated The Dan from the pack. Donald Fagen`s plastic organ solo isn`t a joke either.
William Jackson Fagen is an underrated keyboard player. He takes a bunch of great solos. Your gold teeth (electric piano), hey 19, home at last, IGY, godwhacker, lunch with Gina, (synthesizer), Fire in the hole (piano), organ solos on do it again and my rival just off the top of my head. There’s a few more but those are all great.
Please do a reaction video for some YES songs. Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround, I've Seen All Good People, Heart Of The Sunrise.....all are great places to start! Love the videos, keep them coming!
John Shannon I listed Royal Scam as one of my Top 20 albums with a friend on FB. That opening chord and solo on DTMA is SICK. Larry Carlton! Of course, Aja was Numero Uno.
"How is it possible to have so many great hits?" Because Fagen and Becker were right there with Lennon and McCartney as the greatest songwriting duo in popular music history. They're my personal preference, but that's subjective.
Any Major Dude is my personal fav Steely Dan song and on a side note the Me Myself and Irene soundtrack is mostly all steely dan covers and is a great soundtrack.
Thank you so much for appreciating Steely Dan. I remember when the DJs on our transistor radios in the 70s seduced us young tweens and teens with their music. We saved our pennies for their rare concerts. I love Donald Fagan to this day...Venture into his solo albums as well. He is my genius... my deity.... Rest in Peace Walter Becker.
When my son was 8 years old (9 years ago) I took my son to his first concert, Steely Dan. He was familiar with their music because I had been playing it all his life. He knew every song they played and the fans around us were amazed at this little kid standing in his chair knows ALL the songs. We Love The Dan!
BRING IT bro, Jamel, 28 years ago when I was 16 and started driving we had a classic rock station called 96x. I would listen to that station non stop and i didn't know all the music but when i heard some songs on the station that were so smooth and jazzy i had to call the station and ask who did the song. Each and every time I called it ended up being Steely Dan. That was my introduction to Steely Dan at 16 and I never looked back.
you sir a gem.. the kind of person I would love to just hang out with and listen to (and sing cause I cant help myself at times) this kind of music. Thank you! Keep it up!!
Every time I hear this song a smile comes to my face... could be in a terrible mood, but this song is an instant game changer. SD is probably the most under valued rock band in my lifetime. RIP Walter Becker
Steely Dan is one of the best bands ever. There’s just no room for debate on this.
No room at all
Absolutely no room
Facts
They were a fantastic recording band , masters of the studio. Performing band? They were good, not great.
Yessss!!!
The genius of Steely Dan is that they were secretly a jazz band all along. They just managed to sneak jazz in as pop.
rock lmao pop means popular and steely dan are far from it
Yup
Mateo Membrila :They were popular in bars and clubs all over the world in the seventies.
@@mateomembrila7115 Look at their list of singles and their chart performance.

Truly a power move
The first song on their first album.
People freaked out. Nobody was making records like this.
It was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with music in all the years since, and it will never end...
They were huge perfectionists in the studio, almost to a fault.
This will always be the ultimate bad-ass Steely Dan track
Man, I remember the day I first heard this when they released this album in 1972. I was an immediate fan and have been since.
Steely Dan are probably the most underrated band fro their era.
They really are.
Definitely one of them. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Talking Heads, The Post-Northern years of The Beatles closer to their breakup.
On the UK side i'd say Roxy Music, New Zealands Split Enz hardly gets any love.

No one ever mentions FM (no static at all). Its a masterpiece rarely spoken of, reprise version is also amazing!
Oh no, now there are a lot of first listens to "FM (No static at all)" here on YT. Yes, it is one of the Dan's best - and that's saying something.
Brilliant song
My dad has best of steely Dan on vinyl and I can’t stop listening to it

Walter Becker was one of America’s greatest guitarists and musical genius, RIP.
His solo albums Eleven Tracks of Whack and Circus Money are pretty great. Highly recommended.
Fagan is the John Lennon, Becker is the McCartney
Fagan is the soul of the collaboration, and by far the biggest contribution to the musical sound
Denny Dias on sitar deserves some credit here too!
I want to party with him when I get to the other side
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were perfectionists in the recording studio. They took a lot pride in what they did. And the all the percussion instruments that are being played throughout this song make it great too.
Said it million times, the two most technically gifted musicians ever, and the genius support musicians
This was the song that got me PERMANENTLY HOOKED ON Steely Dan back in 1973. Still have the original album too.
me too--I'm pretty sure this was the first song of theirs I ever heard. It got some crossover airplay on the black stations in Washington DC.

I never get cranky and tense fortunately.
There is no other band except Steely Dan. I know everything by heart, and own them all. They are quintessential.

Oh yes yes yes. FM the best to me
Yes absolutely he should do FM (No Static at all) ]:)
FM FM FM....
Tejas Rob yess!!!!!!!
Tejas Rob well that, and they needed a word to rhyme with hangin' in the next verse....😉
They had vision, chops and an insatiable desire for perfection.
I forgot they sang this song! They had so many hits and I never knew who sang them. Seeing them through other peoples eyes I get to hear the words when all I used to do is hum the tune and dance!
such an awesome duo that doesnt get as much credit as they deserve for pushing musical boundaries when they were putting it out
I lost my shit when you pointed at the screen and said 'Y'all made me look up how they got they name..' ..
😝
Same! And I lost it again when he said “y’all freaky-deaky!l. 🤣
Amazing bro! U made my day with this one.
Jamel... you are adorable!! God Bless!!
Katie O'Brien oh, he definitely needs to check out some Petty!
@@regularjo64 I have been requesting and patiently awaiting the reaction!!
@@kobrien2424 The Waiting is the hardest part, isn't it?
@@chefpegleg1 just as Tom put it!! No doubt!!!
So many good Tom Petty songs. I hope he checks him out.
That's my man Denny Dias playing an electric sitar solo. ELECTRIC. SITAR. Crazy stuff
Check out Eddie Van Halen playing electric sitar on the song, "Primary". 👍
Please do a reaction video for some YES songs. Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround, I've Seen All Good People, Heart Of The Sunrise.....all are great places to start! Love the videos, keep them coming!
Starship Trooper!
@@Snookyooz ST has such terrific changeups between its 3 parts! What a supreme creation.
Yikes, no Yes yet? Oh, you definitely gotta go there!
@@Snookyooz Or "Leavin"!"
Yes!
Royal Scam by Steely Dan. A great story. By some of the best storytellers that has ever graced this earth.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone appreciate Steely Dan.
Don't Take Me Alive and Hatian Divorce is a great listen with Steely Dan too.😊😊😊😊
Haitian Divorce is great
John Shannon I listed Royal Scam as one of my Top 20 albums with a friend on FB. That opening chord and solo on DTMA is SICK. Larry Carlton! Of course, Aja was Numero Uno.
Have to mention the great wailing talk box all through Haitian Divorce. That funky was reggae groove is awesome..
Sassy Cat “I’m a bootkeepers Son, I don’t want to hurt no one”
Watching YOU appreciate them gives me a whole new appreciation for them! :-)
Same here!!!
It’s great to see someone else enjoying these old tunes.
" I'm done " My favorite Song from this Band. LOL.
YES! The mourners are all SANGIN'. Good man for catching that, too often people overlook that. The Dan is at the top of list for quality composition.
"How is it possible to have so many great hits?"
Because Fagen and Becker were right there with Lennon and McCartney as the greatest songwriting duo in popular music history. They're my personal preference, but that's subjective.
How about Henley/Frey?🤟🎼
@@cl8onj388 I'm kinda like "The Dude" in my opinion of The Eagles, haha.
@@cl8onj388 You've never seen "The Big Lebowski?"
@@cl8onj388 Whereas I wouldn't have had The Eagles polluting my speakers. Different strokes for different folks.
@@cl8onj388 You too,peace brah.
Any Major Dude is my personal fav Steely Dan song and on a side note the Me Myself and Irene soundtrack is mostly all steely dan covers and is a great soundtrack.
Did you hear the live version with Rpyce Jones sanging?
I'm 70. I remember when they hit the sceen! Steely Dan was way ahead of the time. Classic & tight group.
*Bodhisattva - Rikki Don't Lose That Number - Reeling In The Years*
Tektoniks Architects Bodhisattva Live in Santa Monica with their drunk roadie introducing the band is PRICELESS!!!
Love your reactions. So open to all this music you've never heard. It's just a joy to watch you.
I love this one, hilarious. “I’m done with this band.”
He had me howlin! Its true....they are ridiculous. Steely Dan in a category of their own.
"Sing, dammit!"
To steal from Forrest Gump Steely Dan is like a box of chocolates till you bite into it you just don't know what your going to get!
Great personality!!! We don’t find many like Jamel, do we folks?!?
This Album sends me! Perfection, simply perfection. To all the new generations, you’ll miss out if you don’t get to have the Steely Dan experience.
When my son was 8 years old (9 years ago) I took my son to his first concert, Steely Dan. He was familiar with their music because I had been playing it all his life. He knew every song they played and the fans around us were amazed at this little kid standing in his chair knows ALL the songs. We Love The Dan!
That one act was a giant leap for mankind. Bless you for taking your son to a night of " The Dan".
This is one of the most layered rock songs ever.
You fall into this Dan world, you’re in there for years. It’s a great thing.
More like forever
And this was on AM Radio! U remember driving with my cousins in New Jersey listening to this in a car. It was like wow. Love Steely Dan for so long
BRING IT bro, Jamel, 28 years ago when I was 16 and started driving we had a classic rock station called 96x.
"In the morning you go gunning
For the man who stole your water"
Got me. I'm all in.
Every time I hear this song a smile comes to my face... could be in a terrible mood, but this song is an instant game changer. SD is probably the most under valued rock band in my lifetime. RIP Walter Becker
