This song gets everyone moving. Big part of me being a kid, sitting in the back as my mum drove us all around listening to the radio. True story: my mum was a single mum with two girls and we didn’t have a lot of money, but you could have fooled me as my mum has the richest imagination. She would yell “radio time” since we couldn’t afford one at home, so she would load us all into the car and we’d have sing-a-long to the radio mini-road trips, stop at some park for a picnic lunch she had made and it’s still one of the best memories I have. MY FAVORITE SONG FROM STEELY DAN ! OH ! By the way, Michael McDonald use to sing back up for Steely Dan. Listen closely, you can hear him in the chorus. And he's doing the ad-libbing.
Another cool story about this song (other than M McDonald's backing vocals) is Jay Graydon's guitar solo. About 7 other studio guitarists had tried to nail it, including Walter Becker himself. They called Jay and in an 8hr session, he got it. Left the studio, Walter and Dan tell him, "Great, thanks". Next time Jay hears it, it is on the radio. Jay says, "oh cool, they used it for the single". Had no idea that was the take.
Something that's not often acknowledged but is absolutely true: if a Steely Dan song has a guitar solo, there's a 60% chance it's one of the best guitar solos ever recorded.
Watch the making-of video. Donald Fagen just wanted a straight bass line w/ no slapping or popping, but Chuck Rainey threw it in on the first take and when Donald heard it on the play back he told him to just play it how he liked.
Steely Dan's greatness is in their overall performance, music and lyrics. Chevy Chase was a drummer for them before they officially became Steely Dan, but left the group saying you can do a lot better than me on the drums. Fagan majored in English at college and it adds to his lyrical greatness. Fagan was studied classical piano. Definitely a lot of layers to legendary. There's a lot of Steely Dan to listen to old and new, Haitian Divorce, Home at Last, Glamour Profession, West of Hollywood, Jack of Speed, Dirty Work, Dr. Wu. Donald Fagan solo, I.G.Y. or Walter Becker solo, Book of Liars. All with that funky smooth jazzy touch they've put out for years.
I love watching your reactions! Did you know that that is Michael McDonald on background vocals? This is where Michael got his break and recorded with everyone in the 70s, 80s before and after the Doobies! :)
Reading all the comments hours later, and seeing requests for almost every song they recorded, I can only add as a Dan Fan as well, that you really should dedicate a block of time to this band. Think about it please Jamel!
Are you kidding?? He's yet to ride Fagen's elevator '90min from NY to Paris, well by 76' we'll be AOK' I.G.Y, Morph the Cat is so phat, on a New Frontier JakaJ will find The Things I Miss the Most, like Time Out of Mind on the Shanghi Confidential watching Show Biz Kids flaunt the Glamor Profession at My Rival, Janie Runaway. Black Friday, Everything Must Go With a Gun, Night by Night as Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More. Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Only a Fool Would Say That I Got the News, Fire in the Hole can be Dirty Work(fun video) so Do It Again. I'm at a loss for a recommendation.
@@cheerdiver Oh my, I can't stop laughing...you're too good friend! But seriously, Jamel at the very least I.G.Y. I.G.Y. I.G.Y. GOT THAT??? There 'nuff said! Ha!

First thing I thought, figuring Jamel knew that record. Then I realized just how OLD my ass is. And it’s OLD. Three Feet High was on nonstop when I was 18! 😬😬😬
Aja is one of their baddest jams but steely's real magic is in the stories told in its lyrics. Drugs and loose women and more drugs are recurring themes
The whole 3 Ft. High & Rising is a masterpiece!! When that dropped in the late 80s in the middle of the Gangster Rap peak, it was such a breath of fresh air... you could never make that album again today without paying a zillion dollars for all the samples they used.. Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys is another album came out about the same time that was a genius use of a wide array of sampling. Both of those I still play today front to back..
@@tanyanelson8780 I remember the summer between my Soph & Jr. year of High School me and my friend Paul played the cassette non stop til we wore it out, then I bought the CD and made copies on TDK's
Out of everybody from the Native Tongues crew De La Soul were always my favorite, even over Tribe Called Quest. And Tribe are legends in their own right.
When I was growing up in Milwaukee back in the 70's, I would hear this song on the radio station many times!!! I would thought this was a black group!!! When I was in the military, I started to listen to rap and De La Soul use this sample (Eye Know) and I usually listen to the original song and if I like it I would download the music!!! I was freaking stunned to find out that the duo were both white (true fact that Chevy Chase almost was part of this group)!!! No matter what the color of the skin as long as you make great music and have the ability to make people sing and dance then you're doing very great!!! Music as no color and to this day thanks to rap music and their sample. Steely Dan is one of the many favorite bands that I love back in the day!!!

The LEGENDARY Iconic Steely Dan
Something that's not often acknowledged but is absolutely true: if a Steely Dan song has a guitar solo, there's a 60% chance it's one of the best guitar solos ever recorded.
This is easily one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. The lyrics, beat, melody, everything is just perfect.
Again I am for "Don't take me alive" pure 🔥
Peg, it will come back to you
Peg, it will come back to you
Then, the shutter falls
You see it all in 3-D
It’s your favorite foreign movie
I know this song from De La Soul's "Eye Know"
I’ve always loved the bass line in this song.
The Legendary Chuck Rainey on bass!!!!
Watch the making-of video. Donald Fagen just wanted a straight bass line w/ no slapping or popping, but Chuck Rainey threw it in on the first take and when Donald heard it on the play back he told him to just play it how he liked.
Oh, my, Steely Dan, FINALLY!! You've got to listen to "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" and "Pretzel Logic".... Sublime stuff, indeed.
Any Major Dude is hands down my favorite.
J F the demon at the door in the mornin’ it won’t be there no more ...
Pretzel Logic is a must listen!
kiddoiam That is a great song! They have so many.
As for the favorite album, for me it’s Aja.
J F one of my favorite songs from them..really hits home
Thank you Steely Dan for your songs, RIP Walter Becker and thank you jamel for your smile. steely Dan does the same thing to me since 35 years.
This guy is so joyous to watch rediscovering his youth - priceless!
I am certain others have suggested listening to “The Caves of Altamira,” so I am adding my voice to that request. It is a beautiful song.
It's one of my SD favorites.
"do it again","this old school","hey nineteen" are a few more classics by Steely Dan ☮️
@Gary Kelly, "Ricky Don't Lose That Number" was another favourite of mine.
Peg was my introduction to Steely Dan. I fell in love with their music from that point!!
Need a full Steely Dan day
Yes-Game On Brother!!!
I love almost all of their songs. Donald’s voice, the layers in their songs.
Greatest band of all time
I love watching your reactions! Did you know that that is Michael McDonald on background vocals? This is where Michael got his break and recorded with everyone in the 70s, 80s before and after the Doobies! :)
Reelin in the Years, Hey 19
Reading all the comments hours later, and seeing requests for almost every song they recorded, I can only add as a Dan Fan as well, that you really should dedicate a block of time to this band. Think about it please Jamel!
b mccombs that would be so awesome!! They are one of my favorite bands of all time 💙🎸🎤♥️
@@vickieray let's just hope he reads this!
Ha!
Michael McDonald played keyboard for Steely Dan.Michael was in the backup vocals.
Everytime I heard "Peg", I would say I hear Michael McDonald.Recently discovered he was with the group before going with the Doobie Bros..He is everywhere.Great artist also great backup guy.
Some bands don't age well and sound really dated. NOT Steely Dan! All their songs sound just as good today as they did when they created them! THAT is one mark of GREAT music!
De La Soul sampled Peg for the song “Eye Know”
We old heads knew this the day de la dropped it...
And some devastating lyrics about drugs. Charlie Freak. Through with Buzz. Dr. Wu.
Arguably one of their most commercially successful songs yet still technically brilliant.
Steely Dan just brings warmth and joy to my heart.
De La Soul sampled this song for their song "Eye Know". It's definitely worth a listen.
That album is a sampling masterpiece along with Paul's Boutique, I still listen to it and love De La Soul to this day.
Out of everybody from the Native Tongues crew De La Soul were always my favorite, even over Tribe Called Quest. And Tribe are legends in their own right.
@@hoptopiah978 love those albums, Paul’s Boutique is my favorite
"Josie" one of my favorites
One of the best songs ever made...how can anyone not like this?
This was my jam. I always know when Michael McDonald is singing background vocals
More Steely Dan songs. Reeling in the Years, My Old School, Bodhisattva, Do it Again, Kid Charlemagne, Deacon Blues, Hey Nineteen plus a lot of others. Great band and hope you check out some of these other songs.
Definitely "Bodhisatva".
Bad Sneakers
Definitely Bodhisattva x2
One of the coolest bands in the 1970s & 80s. You guys from the millennium age finally see what you were missing!!
This band is too smooth. ❤️❤️
