Make sure your yeast is alive. A bit of sugar in your dough helps feed the yeast - salt will help the flavor. When I make focaccia, I make sure it is nice and puffy then dimple the bread using fingertips. The flour shouldn't make much (if any) difference.
Always lovely to see your mum and listen to her reading. Your walk looked lovely, I walk with a friend once a week and sometimes we walk through the forest, its smells beautiful and I always feel so much better for it. Of course we always end with a coffee, a snack and a good chat xx

You are not the worst mum ever!! Kids can kick your arse, and with extra challenges it’s even harder. I know it’s easy for me to say as I’ve told myself the same thing, that I’m the worst parent, so many times, even last night! I don’t film those bits but it most definitely happens. I went to the opening of the nature reserve when it was opened in the mid 80s when it was opened by the great Sir David Attenborough!
What a lovely Sunday! Good for a walk and then chilling out at home. Cozy up with dinner whether you made it or let someone else do the work, then snuggle in to watch tv. Reminds me of my growing up years long ago.

I nearly subscribed to Readly last time you mentioned it then never got round to doing so but I have now! I will enjoy looking through the backlog of crochet magazines and seeing what the knitting ones are like. Thank you for the recommendation. I finally made my first pair of crochet socks which were very successful. Want to make a knitted pair for hubby and have some Drops Big Merino yarn but haven't found a simple pattern to accommodate this yarn yet. Hoping to take part in this year's Socktober.
I took up the offer of Readly last time you mentioned it. I love magazines but certainly couldn't afford to buy many. My husband loves a newspaper but they go so expensive. We both enjoy reading them all. Oh and I tell deleted my saved articles by error x

If you have hulu we have been watching a new game show called the floor. It's been fun it's a trivia game. I love your positive January vibes as I find January hard to get through. We are almost into Feb though and I don't mind Feb as much. Used to the snow by then.
Your Focaccia was so pretty! Now I want to make some; breads can be such a challenge. My grandmother made 20 loaves a week and many of those with a wood stove and she had a hard time adjusting to baking when she got electric stove. She passed in 1969 wonder what she would think of the cooking equipment today. Amazing how women did so much in a day years ago.

Our January has been a bit rough weather-wise but that hasn't dimmed my enjoyment of the month. It is such a hopeful month. The entire year is ahead with all kinds of plans and dreams. You have motivated me to try one of those single serving focaccia recipes today. I wonder if the problem was your yeast? Loved this episode -- as always!
The yeast was new as we use it every week for pizza but maybe the water wasn’t warm enough. I shall not be deterred 😂 🍞

What a shame about your foccacia. I always use Lidls white bread flour. Cheap and cheerful, works a treat. Also Allinson's now do sachets of an extra fast yeast which is especially good to speed things up in cold weather, I know Asda sell it! Such a delicious bread to master and it would go well with lots of the sorts of meals you like to cook. The bread decoration looked smashing though

I definitely made a focaccia with all purpose flour. The yeast is supposed to make it rise. You talked about hot water, could it be that the water you used was too hot?
If you use hot water the yeast dies. It does work better with lukewarm water then it does with cold water, but you should never make it warm.
Interesting idea and concept! I hope to sit down with some knitting tonight- I have a teething monkey that won’t stop crying so I’m in dire need of some quiet time.

I went to a day Italian cookery course and we made focaccia. We had to make it early so it could rise but the one thing I remember most about it was how wet the dough was. Very tempting to add too much flour but it would have been wrong. Wet hands and a very wet dough, came out smashing.

It is the dreaded daily vlog cold! Boo-feel better! I want to set a walking goal for the year, too. I need a new smartwatch because it really helps motivate me. Mine died last year! 😢 I have been meeting a friend for a walk most school mornings. Can I use Readly in the US? I love magazines but don't buy them anymore due to the clutter... I will go check it out. Thank you! Also, I was a baker for a while and wonder if your yeast is still active? Bread flour has a higher yield of gluten than all-purpose, otherwise basically the same. If the second go round of your focaccia doesn't turn out, maybe try fresh yeast. 🥰

I need to get out of our very small apartment (flat, to you in the U.K.) so I have been thinking of getting out to walk as well. I’ve worked out that 1000 miles for me is 6.4km (5 miles) per day if I manage 5 days/week. I will have to be careful as we have black bear in town spring-autumn.😮
🐻 Wow! we don't have to contend with bears! You could always do 500 miles in a year and reach 1000 over 2 years 😃
Did you leave your focaccia in a warm place to rise? It might be that your house is too cold for bread baking in the winter without an appliance to keep it warm.
We have to wait two or three months for all the good shows in the U.S. I'm so ready for a new Death in Paradise!

Ali, do you not have a heater in Kent? Is that why you use the log burner? Or does the log burner just supplement your heat on really cold days? Inquiring minds in the US would like to know. 😁
We have central heating and radiators but we personally only put them on for an hour in the morning and for a few hours in the evening. If we get chilly in the day we sometimes pop the log burner on and the heat rises and takes the edge off the house 🔥 😃

Ali, just curious is the app for the magazines an easier platform to read from compared to Everand ?
I don’t read many books on Everand, I tend to listen to audiobooks but I would say the Readly app is really good, you can choose whether to view one page or two pages at a time and you can zoom in etc. I find it very comfortable to read 📖 😀

Your “cold” could be allergies from your woods walk.
I love your channel and have been watching and following for years. I believe that you deserve to get compensated for your work to make it as enjoyable as it has been. However, paid promotions that last five minutes and sometimes significantly longer are a deal breaker for me.This on was SEVEN minutes long, about a third of the entire vlog. I watch several other channels that do paid promotions and they are almost always around one minute, occasionally as much as 90 seconds. I pay UA-cam/Google every month to avoid being shown advertising. A one minute promotion is easy to skip through. But your paid promotions are really aggravating to me because I have to skip skip skip and then skip many more times. Please reconsider the length of your paid promotions. At some point I know I’ll find that I’ll rather not view a video of yours if it has a promo. So sorry to say this but please know it’s from someone who means well.
