This is the 4th track on their debut album. These guys are 19-20 years of age and they are making music like this.
Without a doubt this is one of the best debut albums ever.

Well….yes…..Robert was just 20….Bonzo was 20, yes. Jimmy, however was a very well seasoned studio and band musician by now, at 24….and JPJ a professional studio musician at 22.

When this first Led Zeppelin album was released, the music world was shocked. Something like this had never been heard of in the 1960s. Robert Plant was only 19 years old when he sang on this record. John Bonham, the drummer, was so young too. Jimmy Page played the middle part of Dazed and Confused with a violin bow on the guitar.

Helene here…..When I bought this album in the winter of 1969, I was in college. I brought it back to my dorm room, and my roommate and I sat down to listen to it. HOLY COW: we had never heard anything Like this album……especially this song. We had Hendrix and Cream albums, sure…..They could be pretty heavy….but this song especially felt darker…much darker. This song, with its descending instrumental line, reminded me of scary movie and TV soundtracks……music made to create a feeling of apprehension. It totally lives up to its title. Very creative and effective! This was about a year before Black Sabbath came on the scene, so Zeppelin quickly got the reputation of being VERY heavy…and just a bit on the “dangerous” side. Which was cool as far I and my peers were concerned. As a band, they fostered that aura of mystery and darkness…..it made them seem bigger than life., and added to their mystique.

There’s obviously a lot of musical influences that help make up Zeppelin’s sound. First off they grew up in a time when so much great music was being made. Blues, jazz, rockabilly, country, funk, motown, folk, not to mention rock that was quickly evolving amongst other musical influences. Jimmy Page was a premier session musician in England, along with John Paul Jones, so they were playing on all sorts of recordings and learning the ins and outs of the studio. You add in Robert Plant and John Bonham with overlapping tastes and well you can start to see how they are so musically diverse and accomplished. When asked what type of music is best for rock musicians to listen too, John Paul Jones replied something along the lines of everything, you never know where you’re going to draw inspiration from.

These guys were 4 master musicians who also had diverse personal musical interests so they could each bring a plethora of musical influences and skill to every song they created. I often tell people that their music is for moods and emotions and I find the same song can hit differently depending on the type of day I had, time of day, etc. I am so glad you're enjoying this journey.

Yet another great reaction, thanks! I can't begin to count how many times I've listened to Led Zeppelin's albums over the last 50+ years, yet I never get tired of them. They were just brilliant, and I so enjoy watching reactors discovering their music for the first time! :)
For comparison purposes, it might be interesting if you reacted to the studio version of "The Rain Song" next. Talk about taking a 180 degree turn from "Dazed and Confused"! I would like to hear what you think of it.
It was good that you reacted to the studio version of "Dazed and Confused" first rather than a live performance. They loved to improvise when they performed and this is one song in particular that they'd get very creative with, stretching it this way, then that way. All good, but now you'd be able to recognize just how fabulous they were at improvising if you watch a live version. :)
Edit: Not only that, Jimmy Page was a genius in the studio working as their producer. Can't experience just how amazing he was at that if studio versions are skipped. ;)

  • @w.geoffreyspaulding6588
    @w.geoffreyspaulding6588 6 місяців тому +4

Helene here……I have a suggestion…..Since you are loving Zeppelin so much (and we LOVE watching you discover them) I would suggest that you do what several other reactors have done: start on album one, side one, first track, and move through their discography chronologically. You can skip the songs you’ve already listened to (or perhaps substitute a live version?). You will then be able to see their growth in diversity in real time. Do at least the first 4-5 albums, a d then see if you want to continue. Anyway, it’s just a thought: I love your Zeppelin reactions, and Dominica is “fan-girling “ as much as I did on Robert. Wasn’t he just the most gorgeous young man? 😁 and Andre…..yeah, there were allot of guys who wanted to BE Robert Plant back in the day.

I was 16 in 1989, and the family went on a long drive around the US. I rode in the way back of the station wagon facing backwards for 7000 miles or so, and I spent much of that time absolutely wearing out Led Zeppelin I on cassette. To this day I can damn near play the entire album in my head start to finish. For someone who fancied himself a musician in high school, LZ1 was a religious experience for me. It was humbling to listen to, the kind of humbling that can only happen when you're good at something, really good, and then you basically see the face of God. Like, imagine being a sculptor and winning a few awards and then being introduced to Michaelangelo's works. That was the level of impact that album had on me.

Watch this live….1969, to see Jimmy play his guitar with the violin bow…and the band when they were just a few months old. The most overwhelming version is from MSG ‘73….which clocks in at 28 minutes and has a fantasy sequence to go along with it (that concert was the basis for the Zeppelin movie, The Song Remains the Same) but that’s too long for most reactors and you might run into copyright issues…although you could do it on your Patreon. Heck, I’d become a patron if you did that!

    Hey y’all!
I just came across u’r “LZ - Dazed” partial reaction, in a mashup, and had to see u’r entire reaction.
I’m in state of Alabama, USA. I was 14, when the first album by LZ dropped, and was released in my area in abt. Feb. - Mar., 1969.
I remember the first time I heard LZ. I was helping my unc. wash his ‘69 SS Camaro, and he had installed a great stereo, amps, speakers, etc. “Stairway” by LZ came on the radio, spun-up by a local station that had just gone live a few mos. before. That was life altering.
    BLOWN away!
At the time, we were caught up in what would later be labeled as the “Southern Rock,” sound, from bands like Lynard Skynard, and The Allman Brothers band. I determined I had to get my hands on their music. I located a friend who had bought the LZ album, (it sold out at all the music stores around my area, and it took many mos. to get more back in their stock). I ended up trading him two of my best “Rookie” baseball cards, and a very nice 1922 US Silver “Peace” Dollar, for his copy of the album.
I took it straight to my unc.’s, and placed it on his “sound system stereo’s turntable, cranked up the volume., lit a nice jay, and left planet earth with LZ for a little while. That next Friday., (because I promised), I picked up my girl, and we went to my unc.’s. I had scored a jar of Mr. Lee’s home-made strawberry wine, and one of the best little purple buds I had ever had, and we experienced side 2 of the album together. WOW!
LZ’s music was like nothing I’d ever heard. It was a mix of blues, and Rock, but blended and served best LOUD! lol
Anyway, I couldn’t get enough of LZ. I traded my first ed. LZ album, for their LZ Ii album, and that or for the LZ III, etc. I know, u’r saying, ‘why didn’t u buy and keep them all?’ Remember, I was only fourteen, and money, ( at least in my part of the world, was very tight.
The only regret I have, is that I never got to go to an LZ concert. But, they played some fine concerts in my head, while the album played! lol
Hey, great song pick, and good reaction @Merchant… (and wife)!
    ps: u got my subscr.!!

Don’t ever worry with understanding the lyrics. Just listen. After your 4th or 5th time listening to the song, then if it even matters to you anymore, then look up the lyrics.
I’m 65 and I’ve been listening to Led Zeppelin since I was about 12. Until UA-cam hit the scene 15 or so years ago, I never knew what the hell robert plant was singing and I never cared.

Really enjoy your Led Zeppelin reactions. It would behoove you to watch/listen to the live version of Dazed and Confused at Madison Square Gardens 1973. Watching these guys in action adds another dimension. Thanks for the reaction!

When VH1 did their *100 Greatest Musical Acts of All Time* to end the 20th century (1998-revised list in 2010) LZ finished 3rd behind only MJ & The Beatles. The list was compiled using input from the musicians themselves, industry people (writing, production, radio, promotional), and critics. They don't have a genre, they will and did try anything, if they liked it or thought they could rearrange it and make it better! Include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, and a few others, and these bands are in another class: writing, producing and playing on a whole other level!

You guys HAVE to react to the Led Zeppelin song, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". Its one of their best. The studio version from their first album. Enjoy!!
