Yey! It's one of the best apocalyptic books I've ever read 🍀
P.s.- there are actually two versions to the story! the one in the full book and another as a short story in an anthology (the name of which I can't recall).
      The endings are different 😎

I think the thing about Stephan King is even if you hate several characters or the book doesn't go the way you want it to, you can't stop reading his books! I was super meh about a few of them but I am also slightly obsessed nonetheless!

The Magicians' Guild!!! I loved it so much back in middle school and high school, re-read it quite a lot, but it's been at least 5 years since I last read it. I need to pick it up again. So glad to finally see a booktuber mention it!

Petrik Leo Yes, that's what I love about Emily: she's so eclectic, and reads adult books as well as YA. My experience has been that most Booktubers are predominantly YA readers, and seem to all be reading the same books.

    • @PetrikLeo
      @PetrikLeo 6 років тому +5

I agree. I'm just super bored of looking at the same YA books on all other booktube channel. I mean, there's nothing wrong with YA but seems like subscribing to one popular booktuber is equal to subscribing to 50 other booktuber because of the similarity. I want variety and just form this video alone seems like Emily is it! :)

Same! I watch people's reading recommendations or "books I've read this month" and it's mostly the same books being spoken about. I like how Emily includes a variety of genres as booktube can very focused on YA.

Jo Nesbo, I think you can read that one without have read the earlier one. But you can miss a bit of Harry Holes lifeproblem and relationsproblem he have in earlier books.

I think you will be absolutely okay reading Snowman as a first book in '' Harry hole series''. But be prepared its a high level in this series and for example first book can seems to be "boring" for somebody who start with snowman :). And yes the story of Harry is evolving through books but you will be okay. And I absolutely recommend all books with him, love it. :)

    Before I forget:
    1) please read The Passage (maybe next year, since it's a big book) - really well written post apocalyptic vampire/monster story
    2) loooove The 3 musketeers! There are actually 5 books in the series. I read them all and until now they're my favourite characters.
    3) French classics to read: Voltaire: Candide and other stories.
I love Voltaire's humour and satire. Loved it so much that I picked Candide in French when I was in France although my French is very basic.

I haven't read many books about magical schools, but I just finished reading The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud and I enjoyed this one so much! It's the first book in the Bartimaeus trilogy.
It doesn't technically have a magical school but more of an magician apprenticeship. I think you will be able to finish it quickly as it is fairly fast paced from the very first page. The story is told from the POV of a 12 year old apprentice, Nathaniel and the djinni Bartimaeus, whom he summons.

About what you said of reading in English rather than in your mother tongue I completely relate; don't know how French translations are but Spanish ones are shitty (sometimes even changing the meaning of some things).

My library doesn't seem to do that, but maybe that's because it's a small one. It does have something where you can borrow books, but you don't have to check them out. They follow the honor system and I think allow you to turn them in when you want. The library where my sister lives has sales and I had bought Stephen King's Talisman there.

I feel you about the translation thing. I used to read books translated in my mother language (Portuguese) but ever since I learned English I refuse to do it. If it was originally written in English, then I'll read it in English. I'll only read translation's if the book was written in another language that I don't know, and even then I want that translation to be in English because I just prefer it. That happened recently, there's a classic German book that I want to read, and since I don't understand German (yet! It's actually one of some foreign languages that I wanna learn one day) I'll read it translated in English. If one day I do manage to learn German then I'll re-read it in German.
Also, I really liked The Sudden Appearance of Hope, so I hope you like it too ^^

I totally agree with you on translations from english to french, now that I read mostly in english it gives me huge cringe moments when I read translations (especially YA). I'm reading The Lunar Chronicles in french because they are at my library but I know I'd enjoy them more in english... (But I need to save money haha).
Some classics that I loved : Les Mémoires D'Hadrien de Marguerite Yourcenar (a bit long to get into it but then it's amazing and it has one of the most beautiful writing), Au Bonheur des Dames de Zola, Le Père Goriot de Balzac, Candide et Zadig de Voltaire, Les Liaisons Dangereuses de Laclos, Lucrèce Borgia de Victor Hugo. I loved all of these so much, all discovered thanks to school :)

Hi. Great haul. I have never been into reading horror, but like you, I have recently really gotten into reading mystery and thriller books. I have also been really developing a liking for autobiographies. I am currently listening to the last book in a 3 book anthology of Star Wars short stories. I'm on the collection called Star Wars Tales Tales from Jabba's Palace by and edited by Kevin J. Anderson. I also read the book version of the cartoon the Halloween Tree, which was really neat. After I get done with reading these short stories, I need to get back to finishing the John Corey detective series I was reading by Nelson DeMille. I also need to get back to reading all of the Guy Gavriel Kay books, and all of the Land of the Elderlings books by Robin Hobb. I have too many books for Halloween and not nearly enough time to read them because I have been working on other projects.

If you're looking for a good fantasy that is written in French you should try "La Passe Miroir" de Christelle Dabos. It's amazing and you can't find it in English. It's really popular in France right now. I highly recommend you check it out, I think you'd really enjoy it!

Hey! I read The Long Walk two years ago and I still think about it sometimes, it was so good! And in Different Seasons my favorite story was Apt Pupil, so dark!! I did the same as you, as soon as I learned English properly enough to read books I stopped reading the translations in French because I just felt like I was reading a completely different book! One of the only francophone authors that I read is Patrick Senécal, I pretty much love all of his books! Do you read his books? Love your channel!

If you like books about schools of magic you can try "skin hunger" - 'it's the first volume of a trilogy called a Ressurection of Magic. The only problem is that probably there won't be the third volume...

Hey Emily, I've seen you've put my favourite book and video game series as to read on Goodreads (The Witcher)! Pleaaaase read The Last Wish (and hopefully the others); it's such a wonderful world and I'd love to know your thoughts. Barely anybody talks about it on Booktube! I read the books AFTER playing the games, as they take place after the books, and wanted to understand the lore and get more of the Witcher world and characters :)

Have you thought about getting Chanson Douce by Leila Slimani? It seems to be getting buzz on book tube with the English translation Lullaby, and it won a book prize, so it might be available in that French only book store :) It's a crime thriller about a nanny killing her charges, but is told in a non-direct time line I believe.

I just bought The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet on Kobo for 3$ so that was great. Surprised at how short it is! So far so good.

Albert Camus is a french author, I read his book The Stranger (L'étranger) for school and thought it was great, maybe it's something you'll enjoy! :)
