How is it possible that library sale books are so neat in Canada? Here in Finland library books have a barcode sticker and usually some other stickers too. And often they are covered with this special plastic that is meant for protecting books. Also, they are often quite used and even dirty.

I'm in the states and our library sales don't usually sell library books. They sell overstock from donations.

    • @Margot1572
      @Margot1572 7 років тому +3

Thanks, that explains! In Finland the books in sales have been in library rotation and that's why they are often in such a bad condition. I think nowadays many libraries are just giving books away for free instead of selling them. That's what we do in the library that I work in. Wish we had Canada's system! I would love that kinds of book sales.

We are fortunate here as well with library sales, they are usually donated books by patrons for help in fundraising for the library. I did notice when I lived in the city it was better picks but not too bad here as well.

I agree with other people that the Dresden Files is amazing! I actually recommend the audio books instead; Spike from Buffy does the audio books and they're superb! I highly recommend them if you do audio. The first one is just an intro story, then it picks up after that. Totally worth it :)

Loved The Shining. Read it twice when I was young, like 10. My grandmother had a King collection. Started my love of horror and Sci-fi. That and Carrier. 😃😃

About the daughter of smoke and bone: PLS READ IT it is soooo great seriously the writting is wonderful and the world in fantabulous. I think the reason why some people dont like it is because it takes you a little to get into the book but trust me there will be a point that you will be completly emerged in the story!! Please give it a try it is my favourite series in the whole entire world

  • @Jennheartsqs
    @Jennheartsqs 7 років тому +3

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher are great! I'm only about halfway through the series, but they're really entertaining. Fun fact: the author originally started writing the series as a joke, nobody thought they would ever get as popular as they did - and the Sci-Fi channel even did a TV show based on the books.

my mom was just making fun of me because apparently every time I see a dog eared book, I always ask "who hurt you? the monster!" I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a strong opinion on this hahaha! I almost spit out my coffee laughing when you said that!
I'm so jealous of this great book hall. I love supporting my library at the book sales, but the selection at my local library is directed at a much older audience. I rarely come across any sci-fi/fantasy or horror or thrillers, which are the genres I gravitate towards. There tends to be a lot of non fiction and romance and cheesy mystery series and cozy mysteries that have been around forever. But that's probably a good thing because the library is down the street from me, and I absolutely don't need another source of cheap books to add to my shelves, my TBR is out of control as it is since my discovery of book outlet... :)

  • @giadag9783

I really enjoyed Daughter Of Smoke & Bone, but I have to say, I've been following you for a while and I know that you're not very much into romance, so I feel like I should warn you: this book is heavily focused on the romance (which is also kind of an insta-love) and everything starts to revolve around that at some point. That was my only problem with this book. The writing is amazing though and Laini Taylor definitely knows how to craft a story. Also I haven't read the next books but I plan to, because I feel they will focus more on the world building and other things other than the romance. Still worth a read though, you might be surprised!

love the library sale, got the classic hard cover hunger games books for just 1$ in mint condition. Also trying to get all the harry potter books , which they are all in hard copy for just a dollar each (not all at ones< those are rare). Daughter Of smoke and bone , it starts slow , but after few chapters the passing is great and the writing amazing (in my opinion of course)

Your library sales sound awesome! Where I live, in North Carolina, they are a bit stingy (because of resellers). Hardbacks are $2, and anything newish or by a well known author is specially priced. Usually for around $5 to $8 each.
Anyways, Joe Hill is a really good author. I finished his book 'N0S4A2' earlier this year, and definitely recommend it!

Yup Esslemont's series is a companion series to Erikson's series. They also wrote more companion books to this MASSIVE world. I'm currently making my way through Return of the Crimson Guard now. Though you can read either series first, I would recommend Erikson's first.

DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE IS REALLY GOOD. Look it's all cliché and ridiculous in the beginning, but like Netflix shows, if you wait a few chapters it gets really really good. SO good. And the other two books in the series are also amazing! I've found that people who don't like them usually say they couldn't get past the first like fifty pages OR couldn't keep up with the ending (it's confusing but honestly really really good). Give it a chance ❤️

The Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy is my personal favorite fantasy trilogy. The second book is, in my opinion, the best in the trilogy because of it's accurate depiction of war and the destruction it leaves on civilians. Not everyone is going to like Taylor's writing and it's a personal preference.

Wow, what a great haul!! My thoughts: I LOVED Dr. Sleep, so if you dont like The Shining, still give it a try. I have never read The Shining and was able to just dive into Dr. Sleep no problem. Personally, I find some of King's early writings hard to get through (he can be kinda long-winded) but I tore through the second one. Horns is amazing!! I read it super fast, and really enjoyed it. I am one of those who was "meh" about Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I really like the premise, but I just can't with YA romance, and that's essentially what it is. I have read all of the Dresden Files books, and I will warn you, as I was warned: They start out slow. Most people I know don't really like the first, or even the second book. It takes a bit to get acclimated, Butcher just kinda drops you into the world and you learn as you go. But the main character, Harry, is awesome, the writing is imaginative and funny, and they go pretty quickly. By book three, I was all in, and now I await new books eagerly. Also, I have tried reading The Gunslinger multiple times over the years, and have never been able to finish it :( I'd recommend Mira Grant (she wrote Every Heart a Doorway that's getting a ton of buzz) if you're in a futuristic post zombie kind of mood. She has two series that I loved set in that time, one called the Parasitology series, which is in the near future were everyone has a parasite inserted them that protects them from all diseases and then they turn on their human hosts, and then the Newsflesh series, which is set in a future full of zombies and follows a brother and sister journalist team as they capture and report news on the front line. Thanks for the video, I always enjoy your hauls!

  • @kittish-om1pm

Agghhh the Malazan Empire series!!! I have the most conflicted feelings about those books (at least the two that I've read thus far). The series actually has two contributing authors; Night of Knives is the first of Ian Esslemont's books in the series, but the first one, and the one that's recommended to begin with, is Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erickson.
It's a very good premise and a very interesting world, but there is a lot going on and a lot of the history that spurs many of the characters motivations (especially when concerning the non-human races) is not the best explained. The magic system is also not very well explained at first, but it's very unique once you get a feel for it.
I love love love fantasy and can talk about this love/hate relationship that I have with these books all day. If you do decide to pick up Gardens of the Moon I'd love to read along with you and discuss it!!!
Nice haul, sometimes random selections are good 😊

So i think it will be up to you to just try! Don't let reviews influence you in this case haha.

ALSO I totally recommend the Dragonriders of Pern series. I read a lot of them when i was younger because my mom owned them and they were kind of my gateway into sci fi and i loooooved them. If you can find any of them, maybe pick them up! I should re-read them as an adult - i hope i'd love them just as much!

Did you ever read Anne McCaffreys Dragonriders of Pern series? I only finished the Harper Hall trilogy, but I loved those books so much in my early teenage years. I don't really see any booktubers talk about her books though.

I thought that Daughter of Smoke and Bone was a great story. It had so many tiny details that come together at the end. I wasn't a fan of how it would jump back in time at parts but I understand why the author did it.

I highly recommend audiobook to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as I think the humor is better grasped when you hear it instead of just reading it.
I personally loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but I don't think you're going to really like it because of the romance aspect, though fingers crossed you do!

Runell Carl and SaharaDoll thank you both for recommending the audiobook of The Hitchhiker's Guide Through the Galaxy. I've been debating whether I should get the print or audio version and you two helped me decide.

If you like Stephen King you might also try reading Dean Koontz. I remember once reading an interview with King and he said that Koontz was the author that scared him, and I thought oh wow, need to read some of his books :D
Also, Under the Dome is a TV series, so you might want to compare them in the future.
Please read the Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I know you were meaning to, but trust me it's worth reading it so much! It's the best fantasy novel ever.

I really liked Daughter of smoke and bone. I bought entire series recently because I find them on amazing sale xD Finally will read whole series.
My brother loves Stephen King but I read 3 of his books and I don't feel it that much. Maybe I should try again with something else xD

My mind is confused, I hate book hauls and this weird obsession to collect books just for the sake of it, but I love your videos, you know what I mean.

I have almost every Stephen King you purchased except Cujo which I have read, and Insomnia which got left in Iowa at my son'r. If you like Ghost stories you will find the Shining top notch, and it's scary in more ways then one. Desperation and Doctor Sleep I have but are on my to read list, I just purchased 10 Stephen King, I listened to some of Horns on audio, was distracted, so maybe it's better the I remember, I do want NOS$A@ by Joe Hill it sounds real good. Cujo is scary but not in a monster way. Doctor Sleep I can't wait to read. Enjoy

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is good, but I was disappointed by the end of the trilogy. The first two are AMAZING though

I'm sorry I haven't commented in a while! I've been kind of absent on Booktube but now I'm sort of back and I've got some catching up to do! I loved the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I usually don't like sci-fi but that one was so funny :D I've read Under the Dome and liked most of it (I wasn't a fan of the ending) and I'm excited to see what you think of The Assassin's Apprentice! I SPY THE BEAUTY OF DARKNESS!! I hope my copy arrives soon I'm dying to read it!!!! Soooooo... Kaden or Rafe? :D

Emily, I wanted to ask you if you have read or want to read Nevernight by Jay Kristoff? I finished it not long ago (and loved it) and I have a feeling that maybe you would like it too)) Strong mc, interesting world and magic, very brutal and bloody story, very small on romance and a lot of plot twists.
