Brownells BRN-180™ Gen2 - An Introduction

- What happens after you start the "ARevolution" with a new gas piston AR-15 upper receiver? You improve on it, of course! Brownells new products team leader Paul Levy introduces the new BRN-180™ Gen2 upper receiver. Everybody who has a "Gen1" can relax: the original BRN-180™ is an outstanding upper. It's just been made even better. The original BRN-180™ short-stroke gas piston system remains unchanged, except now ALL Gen2 uppers come with the BRN-180S™ adjustable gas block. The handguard attachment system has been greatly simplified. Now, you loosen ONE screw and slide the handguard off the rifle. When the screw is tightened, it actually presses the handguard against the receiver. No matter how many rounds you fire and how hot the upper becomes, this handguard will not move - good news if you have your laser or other sight mounted on the handguard. Almost from the moment the original BRN-180S™ was released, folks were clamoring for a .300 Blackout chambering.... And here it is! The BRN-180S™ in .300 Blackout comes with a 10" barrel and 5/8"-24 tpi muzzle threads. Begs for a suppressor, doesn't it?

Yeah, lets act like he doesn't have a rocket launcher behind him in the safe...
So
As the founding fathers actually intended 🇺🇸

We're getting really, really close to my ideal here. Absolutely love that charging handle!
That's the only reason why I haven't bought one already. The charging handle is all crooked and cock-eyed! Looks like a jack-in-the-box crank. It's near the pic rail where your optic mount would be so you can rake your hand on it.
@@muffemod pretty sure you can get any aftermarket charging handle you want. also its easy to take off so you wont need any type of machine to break down the bolt to get it out
muffemod I didn’t like it initially but in operation that shape is pretty fantastic for my usage
psa jakl anyone?
@@srooster4410 I have my eyes on that as well
Those are long stroke pistons, though. I think it can use nor?al AR upper parts, so that's good.
$ 899. For those asking. 300blk complete
Honestly, not that bad considering all the engineering they needed to do to get this round on the AR-180 platform. I don't know of many piston operated .300 Blk uppers. Maybe the honey badger? but i think that's direct impingement.
Michael Manoni sig. $2,000. This is an alternative to it but I’d rather have the sig. Less chance I make a bad lower for the 180 and it cost more in the long run.
Michael Manoni PWS (primary weapons systems) and Adams Arms. Both are adjustable gas pistons. Amazing uppers and excellent customer service. Both also also have 5.56 uppers but PWS is .223 Wylde. Same thing tho.
@@mjmanoni The real key is that this action is bufferless, so folding stocks are back on the menu. Folding braces are too, or even just a sling attachment point for pistols.
@@mjmanoni , as @onesilentarrow stated PWS (primary weapons systems) also produces a piston operated systems, the difference is they use a long piston, as opposed to the 180s short piston. Brownells also openly credits PWS with assisting them on the design of their 180.
I prefer the 180 design over the AR-10/15. The 180 has all the modularity without the buffer tube, making a more compact package
That was the goal!
Doesnt have all the modularity of an ar, mainly because it uses proprietary handgaurds.
@@pyrogothica3906tell me one thing that m lok hand guard cant do that any other ar15 hand guard can?
Super excited to see these back. Was super sad to see them out of stock. But the extended sale time makes sense now.
Something to consider before you purchase, just know that all the parts are
Proprietor , nothing in this upper interchanges with regular AR-15
( kinda goes without saying ) but it’s important to know that if you have any issues with BCG .. etc, etc. there is as far as I know ( I’ve looked ) only one place you can get parts ,, and that is Primary Weapons System, the actual manufacturers of the 180.
I like it, but if you have issues out in the field you can’t just switch a part out like you could with the another AR
( if your like me you have a couple AR’s )
But other then that a pretty cool rifle .
you guys like taking my money! I’ve been waiting for the 300 blackout to come out I new it was just a matter of time happy it’s here!
Thank you!
YES!!! Worth the wait!
Now if we could get brownells or another manufacture to make a sear trip device to use on transferable NFA Lowers.
Will we be seeing the retro buttstock for the Brn-180 soon? Like the next quarter?
Its coming but not sure when due to 2020 being 2020
@@brownells Are you going to have complete retro build SKUs?
Definitely a future purchase for me! I wish you guys made a 12.5 - 14.5 inch version of the 5.56 (223 Wylde) variant. 10.5 inches isn't the best for 5.56 (223 Wylde) in terms of velocity. A 12.5 - 14.5 inch barrel would be perfect in terms of a shorter package. Do you guys know when you'll have the 5.56 variant in stock again?
I just love this product!! In .308 it would be MAD
I totally dig this upper. I have the PWS MK109 (300BLK) and I would love for PWS to bring back the long barrel 300BLK but in 13.7". I truly believe that the 300 in an AR upper (15 or 18) is the future for home/self defense/sm-med hunting (eg hog). BUT Brownells, please make this in 13.7 in 300 BLK--I want the extra burn. And yes, for those that don't know, ballistics does demonstrate that for 300BLK after 9.75" bbl, accuracy and velocity increases.
Holy shit, im hyped! Great news
😎
Make spare parts for the entire upper. Too many reviews of the first gen being worthless paper weights because they couldn't get a proprietary part....
All you early adopters getting butthurt. Love it! Should have just got a plain jane AR-15.
Too many reviews? I can think of 5. All were improperly torqued barrels. (And another 5 or so with dust over issues.) all things that were resolved. If you have more info please pass it along.
@@Rudyelf1 Not just on their website. On forums....
We just launched spare parts...
@@brownells Outstanding! Thanks for the update.
Beautiful ! :)
Will this product ever come back into stock? Lol
back in stock now!
Not anymore a month later haha
Biden wins, nope
Brownells, Inc. when will it be back in stock? I wanted one and am bummed out it’s not available
LOL you're literally trying to buy a firearm during the worst time in the history of humanity to buy a firearm.
It's about time.
Thanks for going over the differences between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 like you said in the beginning of the video. Now I know 😒
Must get one of these.
Perfect for fixed mag builds.
Oh yeah, this looks promising
awesome info, i really wanted the 18 inch 223/556 upper myself, seen some reviews on youtube and people seem to really like this new "retro" design piston upper. i wonder if someone did a torture test regarding the gen 2 version and i wonder how it performed?
Finally 300 blackout ...looks good
For the hopeful Gen 3 BRN-180, could Brownells change out the dust cover with something that resembles the Galil ACE as well as offer the AR-180 B style charging handle.
I want to see the 18” barrel version tested out on the fightlite SRC, 50 state legal, lower receiver!
That would be fantastically blursed.
I really do wish there was an 11.5 or 12.5 version. I much prefer the 11.5 I have vs 10-10.5's I've shot in the past.
Are you able to take the barrel out and replace it with a BCM or any other AR-15 barrel when it ever wears out?
ETA for stocking them?
👍 Nice
a 308 model would be amazing!
Any idea when its available in Germany? I want to put a different upper on my sabre defence lower and the 180 would be ideal and with all the improvements i want to wait for the Gen 2
Can you swap out for longer hand guards? For example getting the 10” upper, but planning on having a live on suppressor and want a more integral look with a 16” hand guard? Is it wide enough to begin with? I take it the bottom nut for hand guard attachment means we can’t swap it out for a separate company/length hand guard to get the look we want?
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Any updates on when the BRN-180 retro lowers will be available? I have one on back order and it’s been six months. Thanks
Hey @Brownells I have a first gen Ben 180s and would like some spare parts for it! It's been reliable but with how much it gets used something will eventually fail. 7000 plus or minus 500 rounds and it has not malfunctioned.
Glad to hear that! We do have spare parts up on the site now!
Is there a sling attachment option rearward portion of lower? I’ve put one together with SB tactical folding brace using a standard AR-15 lower and want someway to sling it.
Took my 300 blackout BRN-180 to the range today to shoot 220 grain subs and discovered that none of them shot stable. They tore severe keyholes in my target sheet. Any suggestions?
I would love to see a BRN upper in 7.62x39 for their next release.
I'd prefer to see 6.5 Grendel.
Love the idea hate the charging handle
Is PWS making these uppers for Brownells?
We need an ambidextrous charging handle in the forend. Easier reaching gas adjustment system. Tool-less forend removal screw. Give it a swing mount so it can be torqued with your fingers. Bullpup lower since this has no recoil tube.
Please make more and send one to brownells.se 👌🏻
I'm kinda curious why this upper HG doesn't allow muzzle devices like the YHM QD? You can't mount that QD muzzle device without placing stress on the your receiver since the HG won't fit under/inside.
How do I install the rear takedown detent spring and pin? The science seems impossible to get it in there.
Please make an option for a left side charging hangle
So this upper fits your standard AR15 lower?
Yes
sometimes. I had to send mine back after having issues fitting true milspec lowers. Also had issues cycling. hope these are better
Any plans on other calibers? 6.5 Grendel would be sweet.
Ya but if the hand guard snugs up against a surface of the barrel wont that transfer heat and cause pinching and inaccuracy? I hope not.
Why not a 7.62x39 model with a brownells specific lower that accepts combloc/magpul ak mags. That would be awesome
Get a KS47 lower from PSA
can you drop any ar barrel in there?
Does the .300 BLK have a gas-off setting for super quiet suppressed single shots?
If Brownell's makes a '180 with a 20 inch barrel I will jump at the chance to buy one. Twenty inch is the bare minimum length for 5.56 mm. I want the barrel with a 1 in 12 twist. Will stick with M193.
AR180s were cheaper to build than an AR15. Hopefully the prices will be good. Get yourself one.
Is there a fix for a loose handguard on the gen 1? My 180S has developed a bit of play.
What about that 180 stock though
👀
Any plans for other calibers like 7.62 x 39?
Got one in 7.62 × 51 ?
So. Are we going to be able to get 300 black out barrels if we have 180s 5.56 uppers?
no
Concerning the brn180 lowers, do they handle AR Maglock and similar?
How about a replacement upper for real ar180s?
Does the BRN 180 upper fit on the Fightlite SCR lower?
Are the bolt carriers the same for the 7.62x39 and the 5.56MMx45?(Reason why I ask is can I just change the bolt and barrel to change the chamber without having to buy a whole different BCG for the BRN-180?
Any chance we could get a version in 9mm with shorter barrels
I can’t get my takedown pin in with this upper... any solutions? It looks like there is too much material on the end cap of the upper.
I'd like one of these in 300 blk. Too bad they are never in stock 😔
What aero precision lower/picatinny adapter is used in the video?
Why the adjustable gas block on 16" version? Were there any issues with Gen1?
None at all but its a good option if running suppressed so its a nice little upgrade for ya.
Please put some lowers up for sale I just got my gen 2 upper
How easy is it to convert to 6.5 Grendel? Standard AR-15 barrel compatible? Bolt?
nice rocket launcher in the back
any one making different barrels? ones not offered by you guys?
Can the upper be compatible with a BAD lever?
So is it actually any better from gen1 or....? Just a screw update? A comparison video would have been better than a announcement video.
Gas block change is an upgrade for those running suppressed.
Now all we need is an 7" & 10" 7.62x39 upper, been wanting a PWS diablo 7.62x39 upper but I can't find them anywhere
I want a grendel one
Yeah a 7.62x39 in 7" would be awesomeness !
Absolutely. I am behind this request 100%. 7.62x39 in a short barrel would be just perfect. Much cheaper to shoot too.
@@Izzy235634 I'd love to see them expand this concept to different calibers but I'm not sure they'll be able to achieve the reliability with those rounds unless they redesign the lower receiver. 7.62x39 and 6.5 grendel in the AR platform are notorious for feeding issues especially when dealing with mags larger than 10 rounds. I have both.
Personally for 7.62x39, I really like the PSA KS-47 that gets around this issues by taking AK magazines on the direct impingement AR-15 platform.
While .300 Blackout was never part of Eugene Stoner's AR-180 platform, the lower-receiver and magazines do not change so the only thing that needed to change was a barrel and to adapt the gas system. I don't think we'll see them engineer new calibers unless these sell really well and they design a lower receiver that better accommodates it.
But who knows! Even if it didn't work properly, I'd love to see it!
@@Cream5oda09 Grendel is life
Why a 10" barrel on the 300 blackout?
Any plans for 308 or 300 win?
Will there be a 9mm version? or how could i modify one to take 9mm?
I do wish they offered an 11 or 12 inch barrel option.
i think they do offer an 11' on there website
Can I take the brn180 and mate it to a MCX lower?
BROWNELLS NEEDS TO GET THE AR UPPERS IN STOCK...
The 300blk are in stock now!
Any plans for a 5.7x28 brn 180?
13.7" or 14.5" in the future?
would be cool if they made a stock which looked like the original ar 18/180
Does this work with ambi lowers
Are you still making these? The website says discontinued.
2nd gen out or whenever it's in stock
What issues with the gen 1 prompted these changes?
No real issues, just upgraded gas block for those running suppressors mostly
I want short barrel AR with no buffer tube/stock/brace like a sig P556.. is this the right product for me?..
Yep!
@@brownells That's great, if only it was available for purchase.. Lol.
Please introduce more barrel lengths, I'd like a 11.5, 12.5 or even a 14.5 variant
Let them breath
That sucks for everyone who already got the gen 1.
It’s two minor changes, not that big of a deal. But this is what the gun industry is like, every year there’s new “improved” versions of what you already shelled out money for.
Sorry bro, but thats dumb. According to this logic, nothing should ever get better/upgraded.
I have the Gen 1 180s and the only difference on the 10.5 inch one is the handguard is no longer QD and requires the tightening screw which could improve it's stability when things heat up.
Luckily, I never opened it! I never got around to building anything due to COVID and ammo supply shortages. So I called Brownells and lets just say we're working it out.
What if gen 3 gets 9mm?
So, when do those of us that bought Gen1 get the upgrade parts?
I guess that is a no then.
What is the thickness of the upper receiver
I want one...
Get on it! They are in stock!
@@brownells Yeah yeah.. and the KP-15s are almost in stock. Can't have it all!
Thanks for the fast shipping on my last order. Freakin' love you guys! Keep doing what you are doing. For a bigger company, I've never felt like I'm dealing with one. Grow, but stay "small."
So, what lower can the 180 be mounted on with the folding stock or brace?
Compatible with ANY current mil-spec AR-15 lower
Please please please come out with a Full Auto bolt for us with registered receivers! I will buy one asap as soon as you do.
Difficult with how the auto sear normally interacts with the back of the M16 carrier. A transfer bar or plate could work, make it get pulled forward and back slightly by the carrier.
Sadly though, I don't think there's enough market demand for that kind of model.
@@DustyGamma Ah, a small part to consider when looking at what they have done building this upper from nothing. Yes there are several designs with a simple plate with connecting rods what would allow the bolt back and then just grab the auto sear when the bolt goes forward. Demand would be more than justified for adding what is basically one part simple part. There are a lot of M16s out there and there are a ton of post samples. MG people spend money, so you could add $200 to the price and I would not blink. People with $20K+ guns getting the chance to turn it into an AR18, for under $1k for the upper... they will sell enough to make it worth while. I might even buy multiple uppers, getting one in short and one longer. Its a simple enough part that if they don't do it, I might get one and just modify an upper to run FA on my registered lower. I am sure some MG guy will soon. However I would much rather have it done correct from the factory. A lot of people write off the FA guys but we spend money! Look at Lage manufacturing and what he has done with Macs.
@@MaximMachineGun Well hopefully if they don't do it, you can find a gunsmith that will. Remember to reenact Terminator!
@@MaximMachineGun hey nice name
is the 180s the 223 version? its strangely difficult to get a straight answer on this
I wonder why the 223 is 10.5" and the 300B is 10"?
Need left handed non reciprocating changing handle
Do they have a last round hold open and release
Yep. Thats all in the lower and mags though really fam. Slap this on any lower and bolt still holds open and releases and everything.
Really want a 24” heavy profile barrel version of this
Kind of misses the point of 300 BLK...
