Product Spotlight: Brownells BRN-9 Upper Receiver

- This one's for AR-15 pistol and pistol-caliber AR fans! Caleb gives us a detailed look at the Brownells BRN-9 upper receiver. This complete upper chambered in 9mm Luger (9x19mm, 9mm Parabellum) snaps onto a standard mil-spec AR-15 or BRN-180 lower receiver fitted with one of many 9mm magwell adapters currently available. It's also a perfect match for a purpose-built pistol-caliber lower like the Aero Precision EPC-9.
The BRN-9 upper is blowback-operated, and in common with the Brownells BRN-180 upper receiver series, it does NOT need the AR-15 recoil buffer system or receiver extension (aka, buffer tube). The entire BRN-9 operating system is contained within the receiver itself. How does it work? The bolt is connected to a weight above it that reciprocates inside the receiver and works with the internal recoil springs to provide enough mass to enable blowback operation. This means you can easily fit a BRN-9 SBR (short-barreled rifle) with a folding stock, subject to NFA rules.
The charging handle is up front on the BRN-9, and it can be easily swapped between the right- and left-hand sides of the receiver. More good news: it's a non-reciprocating charging handle, so no worries about a painful impact with your support hand while firing, which could be a problem on such a compact upper.
The Nitride-coated barrel is 5½" long, perfect for 9mm ballistics, and the muzzle has ½"-28 tpi threads to accept a muzzle device or suppressor. A handy thread protector is included, if you're going deviceless. CAUTION: Make sure you install a 9mm flash hider or sound suppressor, NOT a standard .223/5.56 AR-15 muzzle device. Avoid the dangerous consequences of a large bullet trying to squeeze through a too-small hole.
The short handguard and receiver are machined out of one solid billet of aluminum, so the BRN-9 upper has a sturdy, stable, "of a piece" feel to it. There's an uninterrupted full-length M1913 Picatinny rail across the top, so you can plant a red dot sight exactly where you need it.
More good news: the BRN-9 upper will work with lower receivers set up to use 9mm Glock, Colt SMG, CZ Scorpion, Heckler & Koch MP5, and SIG P320 magazines, as well as Mean Arms EndoMags. It'll work with a lower receiver or magwell adapter that has a last-round-bolt-open mechanism. If you choose a lower that does not lock the bolt open after the last round, you easily lock back the BRN-9 bolt manually. You just won't have a locked bolt to signal when the mag is empty.

I'm glad yall reuploaded about the BRN-9. Lotta questions and needing reviews before I consider it. I think the one thing a lot of people don't understand is that there's not a "mil-spec" for 9mm AR pattern firearms. Everyone does their style and hopes it works better and sells better than the next company.
I'd maybe wait due to the QC issues I've ran into and other people have.

The company I work for makes all 1/2x28 muzzle devices big enough to safely pass a 9mm bullet. Through holes on muzzle devices are a 100% check with a go/no go gage just to be sure.
It happens more than you think and we'd rather not have someone get hurt or damage their gun whether they're an idiot or not.

Received mine this week. Looks well executed, and the (near) universality with different magazine types is a great feature. I’m going to use a Colt AR9 type lower. Double feed magazine with LRBHO feature for the win.
also used this upper on a MP5 mag lower, and it ran like a champ!

This works great with the PSA AR9 glock lower.
It will not work with the PSA Scorpion lower. Feed ramp and bolt hold open prevents the upper and lower from closing. If you can get past that the bolt will not pass the magazine. When locked in place the magazine sits 1/8in to high. Preventing the bolt from passing magazine and going into battery. Too bad because I dislike glock magazines and wanted my Av9 to work with the Scorpion magazines. I have never received a firearm from PSA without having major flaws.
He didnt clarify, i will now be buying this upper with the expectation that it will come with an acro and i will be complaining to brownells when it doesnt

yes video on ejector adjustment, also they need to engineer a spring into the charging handle to keep it forward while the bolt does its thing, that just seems like common sense. appreciate the video, looking forward to the breakdown of this upper. thatll be cool to see!
Looks like a Stribog copy with the Glock mag lower mod.
it's patterned after Matador Arms Montgo-9. Coincidentally, Matador Arms also released their MAT-9 upper which has a longer barrel and I believe some aesthetic/functional improvements over the Montgo-9. Not a lot of info on it on youtube. Relatively new company.
I thought it looked a lot like the montgo-9. Honestly the new matador upper and the PSA Jakl 9 look very cool. I probably would have skipped the stribog if they would have been available
I just got my Palmetto 9mm put together, and looking at this I wonder if I didn't do it too soon. Just going to have to wait and put one of these together too.
Same here I bought the PX9 and the AV-9 from psa. The threading on the barrels are so far off there's no way to avoid a baffle strike. And that Ave 9 was beating itself to death because they pur the same length bolt carrier group as the PX 9 but with a shorter receiver so it was beating itself to death. Hoping this will cure the problem on both of them.

You need to do a video with the most common 9mm PCC lowers. I have a Foxtrot Mike FM-9. I won’t consider this upper unless I know it fits.

Without the bolt pressing against the handle block, the block will slide around loosely in the upper. It needs to be retained without flopping around.
Why does it "need" to be retained? It's only noticeable when viewing slow motion video replay.
@@Axlnut0341 Imagine having to shoot at a slight incline up, (lobbing a 9mm to 200 yrds) the carrier would be slamming that thing back and forth to no end. In all the videos, it's always level but any upward tile causes it to slide back. I'm designing my own version which will be retained.

So the bolt has been modified to correct the follower damage on magazines (I’ve experienced that on several different mags, including PMAGs)? I drove over and bought one of these the day they released, how do I get a new bolt?

Yes it does work absolutely great on the Foxtrot Mike lowers. I bought the matador gen 2 for a PSA AV9 Lower. Feed ramps in the way the bolt stop is in the way from preventing the two halves from going together and if you do get them together the magazine sits too high and prevents the bolt from going home. Too bad cuz I was really hoping it would work with the Scorpion magazines. Selling mine for dirt cheap at the gun tomorrow.

I do think this is neat but maybe late to the PCC game, and direct blowback is not a spicy action. I already got a PTR-9CT (MP5 clone) a while ago. For someone just getting into firearms who wants to reuse their Glock mags / AR lower, this seems like a good option. It does seem like a concern that any AR-15 owner buying this does have the parts to make an illegal SBR if they didn't register before buying this product. Just having the parts on-hand is enough for the ATF to take a big dump on you.

It might work...... Until you drop it and your plastic receiver breaks. My buddy didn't believe me, his polymer receiver only lasted about 2 months. If he would've spent an extra $40 on a metal gun that would've never happened

With that short barrel, it is either a pistol, or in the configuration in your video, it is a short barreled rifle, but, it is NOT a carbine !! Carbine is 16" or more, but less than 20" !!
No a carbine is a rifle that has a shortened barrel from its original lenghth. Such as the m4 is the carbine to the m16 and such. Been around for a few hundred years.
Hope you guys are able to offer better support than Matador. I broke the charging block on the MAT-9 version within the first 10 rounds and a month later they haven't responded to my email or messages on other platforms.
Brownells should have sent you one already. Got a email from them 2 days after receiving mine that it was being sent as a upgrade.

I remember working at a shop and some dude brought in a Sub 2k and a BCM flash hider... In 5.56... and for the life of him couldn't understand why it was a bad idea to mount that muzzle device on his gun. Got into a huge argument and had to walk away

Everyone else uses 1/2-36 so you don't use the wrong muzzle device on your 9mm
@@masonjohns208 Actually this Mat-9 the Matador 9 and virtually every glock barrel (I believe all others ie sig etc also) all use 1/2 x 28. This should have never become the standard but 1/2 x36 is not, though it should be. And people like the scorpion and others have started doing 1/2x36.... 1/2 x28 is very very common. I cant even imagine how many fools have bought a 1/2 x28 comp/fh not realizing that it was for 224/223/22/556 and put it on their 9mm barrel. It litterally makes me cringe because Ive talked to so many people that though may shoot alot are not mechanically inclined what so ever so it unbelievably goes over their head without a 556 bullet & comp and a 9mm bullet and comp and showing them what would happen if that 9mm bullet goes into the 556 comp

i bought a PSA 9mm conversion mag block (glock) back in 2020, not sure they make it anymore. But It works great with a mike foxtrot 16" pistol caliber carbine. Id imagine it works good with this. Ill email palmetto and ask if they still make it. and update this post
