I am quite familiar with the older AR180 and appreciated the differences, like the folding stock. New, they came with two mags. Since additional mags were difficult to obtain, we just started with a regular AR mag, used a mill machine to add the slot to fit the rifles system and moved on. They worked great. A new/old mag system and lower is great. Now I want a new upper. Thanks
I have an original AR180. And it is a blast to shoot. I have put thousands of rounds down range with it which all kinds of different ammo and it has never ever failed me. So I look forward to this BNC version. Thank you. And yes shoot is FUN!
This is why I love the AR15 platform so much, and consider it to be the ultimate free mans rifle. Because it can be adapted, due to its modularity, being able to accept all sorts of different stuff that was not originally available. Now that much is obvious to most of you, but here is what I'm getting at when I say this. Bans are often focused on preventing civilians from getting modern weapons, or being able to adapt guns to accept features not originally available for them. The 1986 machine gun ban is an example of this, a lot of advancements have been made since then and people can't own the full auto guns that take advantage of those advancements, at least in most cases. But the AR15 can be readily modernized, and existing registered m16 lowers (and AR-15 lowers and other parts if they ban those and they are grandfathered or if people hold onto them in secret) can be used to make weapons with a wide variety of features. It allows civilian small arms to keep up with modernization, or in the case of something like this, adaptation to accept new features, actions, calibers, bolts etc. that might have been around at the time but were just not made for the AR15. In any case that AR180 upper is cool.
I sort of do that with mine. Kind of a hybrid charge of how Russians trained to charge the AK-47/AKM/AK-74 and how the Israelis charge the Galil. Very neat upper.
You should pair this up with a cmmg .22lr conversion upper. Both dont need a buffer extension. And someone makes a pic rail to take the place of the extension. I believe the two are a perfect combo.
I know what you mean but, wouldnt really say he personally seen it a large "improvement". He rather seen it as an optimized piston option that was meant for countries with less manufacturing capabilitys and money. And for that it has a really good layout, the recoil rods are on the same axis as the piston. Normal piston AR15's are so fundamentally flawed because the axis of the piston is higher than the channel the boltcarrier moves in (therefore carrier tilt destroys the receiver much faster). But the AR15 DI using its bolt as a reverse internal piston is an incredible system, and still has a lot of advantages. Its verry soft not just in recoil but on the receiver and parts. Its lighter, has less barrel whip, and actively shields the ejection port with gas blowing out of the carrier. During ejection of a piston system debree can get in easier. Ofcourse knowing you, you mostly agree with that, i just slightly disagreed of what you said he might intended it as. And in therms of heat yes, for LMG's with others carrying ammo for you, but as a rifleman you cant really carry enough ammo to get a quality AR hot or dirty enough.
Lefty here, always shoot rifles right-handed. The left side charging handle makes way more sense to me. The very underrated Robinson XCR is a fine example.

IMHO, the AR-18/AR-180 is what the M16/AR15 should have been to some degree. Almost every modern rifle designed or developed in the last decade or 2 has done away with the need for a buffer tube. And there is a Very Good reason for this!

I enjoyed your review of the a lot. It is a great system by evidence of the number of other rifles coping the system. The one thing you mentioned is that Stoner changed the operating system because he thought it was better. This is not true. He had to change it because the rights to the DI system were sold to Colt in the early '60s and could no longer use the system. Again thanks for the great review of the BRN-180, I've looked at the complete rifle but was not aware they made an AR comparable upper.
Thank you. I have an Adams piston upper that I like much better than the DI uppers. I also have a side charger DI. I was trying to figure out if a side charger could be adapted to piston when you put this video out. This is a much better option. Now I need to sell a DI and wait for a sale. Brownells frequently has 10% off with free shipping.
@william terry Everyone has their own preferences like Chevy or Ford. I like the piston. It stays cleaner and runs cooler. It is a little heavier and possibly not quite as accurate but that takes target or hand loads to determine. I can consistently hit a 10" gong at 300 yards with factory ammo and a 2 MOA red dot. That is good enough for me.
@william terry I've read about SEALs in Afghanistan, with 18" Mk.12 SPRs and some kind of special ammo, making 700-yard-plus hits. I won't swear to the veracity of that but I've seen it heard it from different sources a few times.
Generally piston guns are a little less accurate due to the movement of the piston over the barrel, interfering with the harmonics. To how much of a degree. That probably depends on the rifle and ammo.
You'll need to have an M16 lower and piles of magazines to answer that question precisely. The general answer is that any DI or piston AR as well as the BRN-180, SCAR, or most other modern rifles will run perfectly through several times more ammo than an infantryman normally carries. So there is no conceivable way that it could ever matter in a fight.
No gas tube, piston vents up at the gas block. I have a PWS. They are the manufacturer of this product. My Mk114 gets dusty under the handguard, bolt still looks new, and stays cool after 500rd pumpkin shoots. This BRN180 is a different design, but no gas tube to get hot
Going out on a limb saying this, but had this been done in 1987, I believe it would have been more popular than the AR 15. Back then, the AR 15 still had a bit of a bad rep left over from Vietnam, but 5.56 ammo and mags were easy to get. This 15/18 combo would have been a nice competitor to the mini-14 and other 5.56 rifles.

The difference between an AR 18 and AR 180 is that the AR 18 is a select fire rifle that was designed for military contract. The AR 180 is the semi-auto civilian version. It's like the difference between a M14 and a M1A. Since according to gun laws in the US, the gun is the lower receiver and yours is a semi-auto, that makes your rifle an AR 180-ish rifle.

Nothing is currently defined as an assault weapon at the federal level. Various states have assault weapon bans that define a number of firearms by name and many more by feature. To my knowledge, there isn't a single jurisdiction that has defined only AR-15 and AK-47 rifles by name. That's mainly because only Colt and Armalite ever made AR-15 rifles and only Russia ever made an AK-47, and that only for a very brief period of time.
@@chopinbloc Well I don't know where you got that info about the Ak 47 as when they banned sales of them in the US the Manufacture of them moved to Florida and they have a Factory in central Florida now.
@@chopinbloc No Shit I was Born and raised in Hollywood ,Fla.Just so you know the ban was on importation of said Rifles and so they moved their plant to Florida.
The operating parts ie piston and bolt are more foward than ar 15 di system = less muzzle climb during operation. More moving parts like the piston gives you a harder but quicker recoil. Cyclic rates are different but its the moving weight that changes that feel.
DGI is like a dog with no hind legs every time it craps it does it all over itself and you have to clean it or it causes ever increasing problems. It is also designed to run heavily oiled which causes dust, dirt, and sand to stick to it and turn it into a type of abrasive grime that increases wear. And if you are in field conditions or combat for an extended period of time it makes it harder or impossible. And carrying it cased, and pulling it out, and shooting it and returning it to the case is ALOT different than carrying it on patrol (military field conditions) and having to use it in a high volume gunfight. And anyone who doesn't think so isn't as intelligent as they think they are, they are just plain stupid ignorant. Coatings that shed carbon and require no lubrication that the sand and dust particles can stick to are a different breed. My choices for a rifle are #1Piston upper. folding stock bonus #2Super coated. Increased reliability and longevity #3 normal DGI system is like a liberator rifle. Shoot a bad guy with a more reliable weapon and take his and sling yours (preferably off a cliff.
The US military has something to say about that seeing how the M16/M4 are di guns and are the longest serving rifles in us military history. BTW, I carried an M16A2 thru Iraq without issue. During all my time in service I have never had a rifle fail to function because it was dirty.

I mean i like my ar as is but building another. this looks so interesting. but then against im also looking at that ARC 6mm conversion possibly for this build. Just thought this was cool.
You say the AR 18 / 180 is an improved AR-15. That is fundamentally incorrect; the AR-18 was made to be more simple and less expensive to manufacture. It was intended to be built under license buy countries who could not afford or were not capable of manufacturing AR-15s. When originally designed, the di system was more advanced, lighter, considered more accurate, and considered more reliable than piston guns, which is an older design. When designed, there was no question about which rifle was the better system.

the reciprocating charging handle is the only thing I hate. to bad it's not like the FN PARA. if you have ever shot an H&K 91 or 93, you will notice the muzzle flip is more pronounced. why? the it's all in the piston (like the FN, AK, Galil) that mass just makes the muzzle flip up more than direct impingement if an AR-15.. Just 30 years of my 2 cents.
Uhhh, Eugene Stone had nothing to do with the AR18. Arthur Miller designed the AR16, and after Stoner left Armalite, Miller was asked to make the AR16 smaller in 5.56, thus the AR18. It was never an improvement over the AR18, it was simply a competitor, one which specifically avoided the AR15 patents, which Armalite had sold to Colt.

Nope. ..stoner designed this one as well cuz armalite sold the ar15 to colt and colt took it to military trials and armalite wanted in aswell so stoner had this one in the works wich he thought was a better gun anyways and presented this to trials aswell. ..tired of txting, go wiki this stuff, its a cool story...ar18 shoulda been americas gun
NOT for a leftie hehehe, but a cool rifle none the less. Now I see where the desert eagle came up with their recoil system. Right from this design...
I'll add it to my bucket list....
Intriguing, I would like to know all the technical details.
Seems like if you really wanted to know you could go to the product page on Brownells lol
I'm gonna have to check that out!
The hi power is the 1911 done right? I'm not sure we're ready to hear that. Give it time maybe the hi power will catch on. I know, we should just rename it so it sounds like a new thing, something more modern from this century like the 2011. Nah that'll never catch on...
100 yrs isn't long enough? My money is on it never will....
Does that mean it’s no longer an “assault rifle” since only ar-15s and ak47s are defined as “assault style weapons “?
@@donaldk.macbaird5248 you do know Florida is in the US, right?
@@chopinbloc No Shit I was Born and raised in Hollywood ,Fla.Just so you know the ban was on importation of said Rifles and so they moved their plant to Florida.
@@donaldk.macbaird5248 lol. Bless your heart.
The operating parts ie piston and bolt are more foward than ar 15 di system = less muzzle climb during operation. More moving parts like the piston gives you a harder but quicker recoil. Cyclic rates are different but its the moving weight that changes that feel.
I love everything I heard, except I don’t like they’re charging handle. What is the deal with that?
Great platform facelift. Hopefully itll get some traction with new shooter
Definitely would be nice to see some more close ups :)
We had limited time during our short trip to bust out a few videos.
Hmmm , a folding stock and a 10 in 300 blk barrel would be nice .
Wrong
Is the BRN upper receiver compatible with AR15 barrels?
No.
Is an ar15 barrel compatible with a brn180 upper?
This is Brownells version of Sig MCX VIRTUS
So, how well would it suppress?
great, I have a trash panda and it is just like any other AR-15
My choices for a rifle are
#1Piston upper. folding stock bonus
#2Super coated. Increased reliability and longevity
#3 normal DGI system is like a liberator rifle.
But since this is America you are free to whatever opinion and gun you want. I won't stop you. You can even disagree with me, you still have my respect provided insults aren't being thrown around
@@JJsGA I find that interesting because I also have heard of a freshly cleaned M4 jamming first shot due to the fine sand that collected and coated the inside of the upper (because he failed to close the ejection port cover) at the end of a 3 hr drive in a Humvee....
@@rosebarnes9625 then blame the soldier not the gun. And it takes quite a bit of sand to do that. Like I said, I've never had a M16 or M4 fail to function from being dirty. Now I've had a few failures to feed or double feed but that was mag related
@@JJsGA oh man!! You just reminded me of the MASSIVE frustration of FTF jam on the 2nd rd of every mag including the original mag that came with the rifle...... finally, after a week of trying to figure it out, realised it was the mag follower.... got anti-tilt followers for pennies each from ebay, no more problems....
It's confusing not having personal experience with all the conflicting reports.
Thank you for your service!
I like the ideal of a forward piston. Not real crazy about the carbon getting to the bolt. I always look for a cleaner burning powder.
Its been provin before that the springs on a piston system tends to give out early than a rifle that doesnt have any
Um.... of course, the springs on anything are going to wear out before the springs on the same thing that doesn't have springs will wear out.... kind of hard to wear out what you don't have...
Recoil impulse looks almost horizontal
Probably a stupid question but, is the buffer tube an spring assembly still utilized? Or do you even need it?
I’m also curious. And I’m also curious as to what kinda but stock he has on it. I really want to get that kind
Lack of buffer tube also makes bull pup configuration possible. Just saying.
222 cal would be great back to its roots
I want a super short barreled version in 300 blackout. To make a pistol build with.
I can just Imagine how it'll be in California with AR-18s
Some how never have heard of an Ar-180 till now. interesting ! i 've seen plenty of kits that convert from gas tub to piston driven but never a design like that.
Would you say you prefer it over the traditional AR platform ? I mean i like my ar as is but building another. this looks so interesting.
but then against im also looking at that ARC 6mm conversion possibly for this build. Just thought this was cool.
Thanks for making this video, guns are for fun
Thank you! 👊 👊
I think I need one
Wish this rifle was legal in Canada.
Nothing is legal even ar 15.com is on the list.
You should do a build video.
Lose some weight and your vids become even more excellent. Give you're self that class that you have. It suits the dept insights of you very informative vid! With outmost respect, Editman. ( who just subscribed to your channel )
Could sell and buy them in Canada, if the AR 15 is banned for good?
Its not a complete reproduction, but it is perfect! ;)
Ahhh. Well put.
Does it used normal 556/223? Whats the price on it?
About $800. Yes, it is chambered in 5.56mm.
@@chopinbloc Awesome & ouch on that pricetag. 😏
the reciprocating charging handle is the only thing I hate. to bad it's not like the FN PARA.
if you have ever shot an H&K 91 or 93, you will notice the muzzle flip is more pronounced. why? the it's all in the piston (like the FN, AK, Galil) that mass just makes the muzzle flip up more than direct impingement if an AR-15..
Was this filmed in a high altitude location?
Did browning make the hi power double stack?
LH 308 please
I need it in .300blk with a 10inch barrel
Going to have to get one.
Awesome! We enjoyed our trip and time with Brownell's BRN-180 and BRN-180s
It’s a MSR not an AR... it’s important to refer to these firearms as “modern sporting rifles” rather than AR or assault rifles
Armalite rifle number 18
Do you like that Ace Skeleton Stock? I'm thinking about buying one for my current build.
I only used it briefly, but it was comfortable. Nothing about it really stood out to me, which is kind of what I want.
What stock is that i like it thanks for the videos
Ace. I'm not sure what model.
How durable are the charging handles on the upper?
Thats pretty cool. How does it operate with a can on it?
like any other AR-15, I have used it with a trash panda and had no issues
I need one too
Isn't That The System Ruger Uses On It's 556?
Can you rock am echo trigger system with it?
That's actually a good question. I'm sure the newer fostech echo trigger system should work but I guess it would need to be tested
