Metallica isn't even just the biggest metal band, they're one of the biggest music artists of all time.
@@octavius8562 just like guns and roses is considered a great band on behalf of one album
@@octavius8562 They've had 6 number 1 debuts or something haven't they? Doesn't even consider their first four, either.
@@fatimapalacios2292, the narrative that Guns N' Roses are considered a great band on behalf of one album is inaccurate. While Appetite for Destruction is the best-selling debut album of all time, one of the best-selling albums of all time, and most notably, one of the most loved albums of all time, it isn't their only international hit iconic album. Their Use Your Illusion albums had contemporaneously debuted on many charts in first and second positions and maintained them for long periods of time, bumping down Michael Jackson's albums, and the Use Your Illusion Tour is one of the most extensive stadium tours in history. It had drastically elevated Metallica's sales of Metallica, The Black Album, and established Metallica as one of the most successful bands in the world, and after it, Appetite for Destruction has still long sold more copies than Metallica has, and the Use Your Illusions have sold more copies each than all other Metallica albums have, including Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice for All. Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II have eight singles between them which are played daily all over the world, November Rain, Don't Cry, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, You Could Be Mine, Live and Let Die, Civil War, and Estranged, which are massive fan favorites, and Yesterdays, and there are at least a dozen other songs on them which are generally well-loved, as many generally well-loved songs as are on Appetite for Destruction. Appetite for Destruction is exceptional, but for anyone who's listened to Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II beyond skimming them, they're as important in Guns N' Roses' discography as Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice for All are in Metallica's discography, if not much more important for diversity which they provide musically. Guns N' Roses are considered a great band for three albums, and most listeners who haven't heard two of them in the past thirty years should hear them. This isn't to mention how excellent of an EP GN'R Lies is, and everything which Guns N' Roses have released after 1993 is also worth hearing, even if it won't be impressive to everyone. These artists earn their success.
@@leerobbo92, Metallica will always be immensely successful, because their legacy had been fully cemented by their first five albums, especially Metallica. Fans love them for their overall sounds, it doesn't matter that many prefer their first four albums as more of their albums are released, many want to hear more songs of theirs, and these won't change. Their debuts at #1 will increase until they're very long gone. They'll never stop, they'll never quit, 'cause they're Metallica!!! 🤟🏼
@@chrismeadows4216 those use your illusion songs were written at the same time as the others in appetite. If anything use your illusion is an album with outtakes. Not denying the success, I love guns and roses but seems like the inspiration was really there just on the 80s

What blows my mind is when you look at Facebook page likes, Linkin Park blows every band away with 59+ million likes. Even the Beatles (39+ million) and Metallica (35+ million) don't have quite that many likes on their official band page. Not that it's really important but I always found that kind of odd/interesting.
I'm gonna guess it's because Linkin Park is younger and has huge following in Asia.
I'll tell you why, its the Indian/Asian teenagers.
I don't listen to their stuff anymore that much (not that i don't like it or think it's cringe or anything, I've discovered other bands that i like more), but they did introduce me to metal. And I'm sure a lot of other young Indians are/were into those nu metal bands as their music is more friendly(?) to someone who's just discovering metal.
Linkin Park has a lot of rap fans and pop fans
@Cyberdemon Mike that one's my fav tbh, followed by their old stuff like ht and meteora
I mean Linkin Park was always really popular because their music was a mix of genres and was played on like every kind of radio station. And Everyone liked it, I dont think I ever heard anyone say they dont like LP. That being said, I'm not crazy about their stuff after the first 2 albums, but it sells.
It really surprises me that Avenged Sevenfold is so low in google popularity. They have one of the most homer filled fan bases ever and they’re extremely accessible to non metalheads. While I agree that their popularity is waning,I figured they’d still be one of the more popular metal bands.
As a A7X fan, the past 2 years have been pretty quiet in terms of news. But I think the major reason could be that A7X fans are a very vocal minority? Not sure honestly.
At one point they would have been on the biggest, but since we lost the Rev, the popularity feel
They're high by modern metal band standards, but IIRC their album's debut weekly sales are usually not that much higher than Metallica's Black Album sales are every single week, 30 years after its release. They're not even in the same stratosphere.

As much as I love Linkin Park, and they are probably my biggest musical influence, I do consider them mainly an alternate rock band. They do have some metal tracks though, however they also have released many albums that aren't quite nearly as close to metal as others. (One More Light is the prime example). One thing is that Linkin Park did become less popular around 2006-7 from switching their music and experimenting with it in Minutes To Midnight, but you can't compare them to the other bands earlier due to there being no google trends. But the same could be said for many bands, especially Metallica and Black Sabbath being as old of bands as they are, I'm sure their search trends if it was around say in the 80's would be marginally larger. But in my own opinion, you can't really compare bands based on these trends, but more on their influence to people, because they are all from different times and had different peaks.
There's so little metal in Linkin Park that TSA just waves them through to their flight.
@@jeremycarnes1656 their first 2 albums were nu metal then they kind of evolved into an alternative band

Hi Mike at 18:50 Nocny Kochanek is a Polish heavy metal band that satirize the stereotypical behavior of the metalheads subculture in Poland and laughs at the mentality of Janusz and Grazyna (in Polish culture of memes is an archetype of man and woman with mentality of boomer) definitely worth listening to for the music itself.
The influences on their music have bands like:
Iron Maiden
Blind Guardian
Dragon Force
Manowar
Black sabbath
Kat(in Polish it means executioner)
A7X etc.
Thank you for the insight!!!

Great video! Dope Schecter guitar bro!!!
Id be curious to see a weighting of these google trends (new fans/outsiders) alongside something like spotify listens (established listeners) for a more complete image. I love Dio and listen to him regularly, but i don't know the last time I searched his name, the best chance of him coming up in google would be someone covering him which I havent heard since Killswitch Engage in 2006. Same with GWAR after Brockie died, theres not a whole lot that can bump them out of their more niche fandom.
For sure! I'm not sure how I'd weight it, and I'm not sure where to find stream data for bands other than monthly listeners, but that would paint a very different picture!
@@BecomeTheKnight Im not sure if the data exists, but if you could overlay google searches with monthly listeners over the same time period, you might get a sense of a group's potential market penetration with their popular appeal/accessibility.
A huge spike like Lemmy's passing probably brought a bunch of people to Motorheads music for the first time, but since as you mention they are a metalheads metal band their monthly listeners probably eventually reverted back to the equilibrium. Something like a new album from Slipknot probably gave them an appreciable bump in listenership after the google search spike. Trapt is probably having a huge search term spike the past few weeks, then as people take Headstrong off their workout playlists the listener number might go down.
From that jump, rate of decline, and any resulting equilibrium change youd see:
- Possible market impact and mass media relevance by relating a search spike to a listening spike
- The half life of the listener number decay gives you the popular accessibility of the band as people hearing it for the first time drop off
- Any statistically significant permanent change in listenership indicates new fans of the music who discovered it/changed their listening as a result of their google search.
Youve combined two of my favorite things here, metal music and statistics...

Check out Nocny Kochanek from 18:54 it's a polish heavy (I'd say more kind of comedy...) metal band. They've also a more "serious" english project called Night Mistress and in polish it means Nocny Kochanek ;)
17:17 Yeah I think when we see the spikes for Guns N Roses ans Motörhead it's less of an indicator of how many people like those bands and more of an indicator of their cultural significance.
If someone is a fan if Motörhead they aren't gonna be Googling it every day, because they already know the band and probably have the CDs and records already. But something significant happens, their impact is gonna show as everyone flocks to see if the news is true, and then people who are unaware of what's going on will want to find out.
Did anyone else catch that Mike had the meme lord Kmac2021 in his search history???
Nocny Kochanek is a polish band, heavy metal in style of Iron Maiden with funny lyrics. They played under english name Night Mistress aswell.

You should compare Metallica to Post Malone and some mega pop stars like Taylor Swift? Also, look at monthly listeners on Spotify. I feel that would be a better depiction of popularity.
Great video, Mike! I thought you were very insightful. I'm honestly kinda shocked that Megadeth, Guns n Roses, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, and IRON MAIDEN!!! Of all people are below Metallica granted, we shouldn't really be surprised either. Still, I would think that legends like Dio, Maiden, Sabbath, and Lemmy would be higher than Metallica considering their impact on metal music before Metallica burst into the thrash metal scene. I apologize if this makes me sound like an annoying grandma preaching about good music from the good ole' days. It's just that I would've never thought that Maiden, Dio, Sabbath, and Lemmy would be below Metallica. I understand that this is just a joke and it's only for fun:)
Is there a way to look at streams from say spotify/YT music/Pandora to see which bands are more popular? I don't search for a band I already have in my library. Just a thought

Pretty much my thoughts on it. The stats aren't a perfect representation of "popularity" but they do indicate something. Probably easier to get a better picture with more data.
I would not consider Linkin Park a metal band. I’ve listened to every single song from them except maybe some obscure B-side I haven’t heard yet. The majority of the music they’ve made is in non metal genres. Mainly in the broad genre of rock (subgenres such as electronic rock, punk rock, alternative rock, and hard rock). You could argue for it because their most popular music is their nu metal stuff, but still they’re not a metal band by the actual numbers in their discography.
I would save Given Up, QWERTY and others were more Alternative Metal.
Still fun to see that Chester's last song was full on metal with Mark Morton (Lamb of God guitarist) with Trivium bassist Paolo Gregoletto and drummer Alex Bent.
I wonder if Dio search terms popped up for a certain parody video. ;)
I was kinda curious to see Gojira, i imagine Gojira would have spikes in 2016 because of Magma, in 2017 because of their grammy nomination and 2020 because of Another World, a song that made some success when it came out
I’d love to see you react to drum corps
