The problem is most of metal bands you see around here don’t actually know how to write music. They can play an instrument but they don’t know what music really is. I have a degree in classical guitar and pretty much everything is painfully bad now. Nothing is worse than djent, pop punk, and generic metalcore....except country, country is the ****ing worst. The problem is people writing this garbage Rudy has to sit through don’t understand why the songs they are trying to copy work and so come across as copy cats at best, but typically fall flat on their face when they try and change a part of it. Just random repetitive riffs, the same progressions, terrible tone, no innovation at all. There are of course exceptions, but most bands who write good music know what they’re doing, sometimes instinctually, but almost always because they were taught it. Music is like calculus, most treat it like it’s addition. There’s also the idea that if you play well you can write well when that just isn’t the case. I can play Mozart, Beethoven, Bach or whatever composers work you put in front of me, but if I tried to write something just based on the fact I can play them it would probably be terrible. If, however, I understand why they write the way they do and the underlying structure they use and the alternate ways they could have gone and how and why they differ from one another, then I would have a place to start. The problem with alot of “prog metal” bands is they make this mistake. But it’s also possible to go way to far down the technical direction aka Dream Theater. Every day I pick up the guitar and think "But would I play this to Rudy" and then I say "No, clearly not" and go back to my soul-crushing desk job like a responsible adult.
My only issue when writing a song is always more along the lines of, "I feel like I need to add more variation on this" or "I think this section repeats too much". And that's because I tend to write the music first and then write vocal lines. But then I run into the problem of, "Is this a melody line or a vocal line". So, never ending self doubt which causes me to either not finish a song or think it isn't good enough to release for people to enjoy.
The issue is a giant misunderstanding of what makes music work. Music isn’t addition or subtraction, it’s calculus. Almost all of these bands have people who mistake playing an instrument for being able to write. They copy paste randomly from music they can play without any regard to whether it actually works or not. This is why so much of it sounds exactly the same...because it is. I don't think it's actually all that hard to write something that sounds good and remotely original. The biggest problem I see getting in the way of originality is that people are WAAAAY too preoccupied with being like the popular things they've already seen and heard, which limits their own uniqueness ("I want to learn guitar so I can play like [X] band", for example). This is not just something you see in the metal scene either, but everywhere (I mean just look at how every DIY tech video had to have "Iron Man" somewhere in the title for the longest time). If you care too much about playing like everyone who came before you, you're only ever going to sound like those who came before you. Learn to make music because you like music, not just because you liked a certain band. It's a good start, don't get me wrong, but a lot of people stop there and never progress beyond the "fanboy with skills" stage.
Honestly I don't even think that's a bad thing. Given the fact so many people want to write music you're going to have people who simply want to copy, paste, and remix, as well as other people that want to innovate; I think most people fall somewhere between those categories. Not everyone values innovation/uniqueness > tradition and what's popular, just like not everyone values complexity > simplicity. Honestly, if people want to do things that are (perceptually) musically redundant, then as a musician myself, I don't see anything wrong with it. If people are fine just playing power chords in simple progression, that's cool with me as long as they're passionate about it. @@darkmotherboard272 it is my duty as a random Goomdy Ayoobus viewer to get offended for my fellow viewers. Regardless of whether they've agreed to it or not, somebody needs to complain or else Goomdy isn't going to know that I feel offended for the people in this video.
Wings of Glory: Instrumentation louder, double-track the vocals or put some SLIGHT reverb on it.
The Resolved: Whatever emotion you try to convey, tone deafness is not an emotion.
Dude sings like couple of weeks at best , if he's not he probably be better quitting singing
bows my mind people still unironically put "i cant live without you" in their choruses
This is some very solid advice, presented in a blunt way but i think it's what's needed have a constructive impact. Great video man
12:23 when he hit that note, you came a little, your face said it all.
The first song is a lot more grungey than anything else tbh
Sounds like mid-tier radio rock from 2006
yea pretty much when you listen to a lot of green river, smashing pumpkins maybe some alice in chains
man the Oddhead one sounded really weird and cool
MAN these damn We Are William have no business sitting on 1k views
Check out vas defrans, this songs sounds similar and they are worth a check
ua-cam.com/video/JsuV_3fo_6M/v-deo.html
The amount of instrumentals sent in astounds me.
The intro had something going there, but to transition to that guitar was a war crime 23:10
All the tension and atmosphere built gone in seconds
This is one of my favorite series on this site.
I laughed so much, i'm only half way through but I love it, it's rare that I watch such long music review videos 😂 great stuff, dislike
Unsubbed, blocked, and may God have mercy on your soul
Really loved oddhead (fishman video) awesome song! (not the video)
The Still Searching stuff is actually great! This clean part is something non-generic, and I would love to listen this song again.
The best metalcore bands just make heavy pop songs, and it's awesome.
Thank you! We appreciate that!
@@StillSearchingNC lol bruh
It's aight. It's good metalcore... problem is they sound like literally everything else
The Resolved reminds me of “Queens of the Stone Age” the Netflix adaptation obviously.
Im from Brazil and didn't know Presto Vivace. Now I know and I'm loving it. Thank you!
Guy in the background wearing Supreme is my favorite artist feature
I liked the weird fish song best of all. It was refreshing since it didn't sound like the same old - same old. No apologies.
Same bro
imagine using light theme on youtube.
on my phone its dark, idk why i left it white on pc lmao
@@RudyAyoub suuuure, rudy. tell it to the judge
22:30 they stole the melody from smells like teen spirit ! That is outrageous. How did you not notice Rudy?
Lock us up
Never thought I'd like any of these, but the oddhead one is so interesting to me. Audio only would've been better than a video here. I loved the song!
Yo, Septa was legit good bro. I liked it bro. Thanks for making me notice bro.
Artifact's bass tone was fire
Each time I watch or rewatch these roasting sessions, it gaves me the privilege of washing my eardrums and neurons afterwards with GOOD music I took for granted...be it (random order as they come to mind) Metallica, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Disturbed, SOAD, Satriani, Nightwish, Fear Factory, Dio, Deep purple, Black Sabbath, Dire straits , Pink Floyd , Amon Amarth etc etc... Just any other good performers who WROTE songs and music and didn't just shred notes and growl randomly 😅
We Are William would be 100x more interesting if they had some more interesting progressions
Definitely check out the rest of the album this is definitely one of the chiller songs
"fairly punchable faces" my new favorite soft insult.
Harsh as always, thanks for the roast bro
I thought your dad’s bass playing was sick compa 👋🏽
The clean solo in the Still Searching song actually slapped. I loved it! I can see why people would find it jarring but I love these kinds of surprises.
That Tanveer dude has a Silent Hill vibe, love it.
8:44 I found a name for this genre - Torturecore
"Right here, I can't tell if I hate your voice, or you can't sing"
That broke me
"this riff sounds like what throwing up sounds like.. in my head" HAHAHA lost it
These home produced videos always show drums being played over very obviously programmed drums in the mix lol
Bruh I swear prog musicians love space but forget to put any in their fucking music
Can't believe that Presto Vivace appeared here! Love that band.
Good to see a fellow Bengali guy (Tanveer Kabir) doing a great job at nailing the guitar like that.
~ love from India
23:15
I was doing the exact same thing with my hands during this part and then i started cracking up when we had the same idea lmao
The main vocalist of the Artifact band is brutal as fuck, not gonna lie
Much love
Thanks for the roast rudy! Next time listen to the 2018 song :D
I love your videos because your commentary is funny as fuck, but I also end up liking at least 50% of the stuff you hate so thank you for both being entertaining and a source for me to find new music lol
Imo Artifact wasn't really that bad lol. Catarinth's intro was pretty cool too
❤
my favourite bullying show
That artifact song was dope. Im gonna follow them
❤
It was a riff salad :P
Agreed. Fire
Broo, this is my FAVOURITE series!
"right here i can't tell if i hate your voice or you can't sing" fucking ouch haha
"You don't want to judge a book by its cover... The book judged the cover in this case" Lol
was really hoping "wifi broke lol" was the name of a band...
For Metalcore, although incredibly generic, Save Me really nails it. Would I listen to it on a daily basis? Probs not. Would I if I was 16 again? Y e s .
When I read save me, I thought it was save me by A7x
wasn't expecting to see eugene tymchyk submission here
I remember them having another project called The Nietzsche with songs based on different poems
quite interesting stuff and definitely worth a listen in case some of you guys are interested in mathcore\chaotic\etc type of sound
favorite songs: In Kharms Way, Shake Your Spear, Vasyl, Mayakovsky anthology
Nice to see another The Nietzsche stan!
Reading this comment gave me a headache
@@mysterygirl30011 sorry, im usually read-only, just felt really surprised on that submission
Loved the floppy Weiner song. Great job Apomorph!
That Still Searching song was good as a metalcore song but that clean middle took away all the momentum that had built throughout. Something I’ve been guilty of in the past tbf so I can’t be too hard on them 😂
"Sorry i can't listen to this anymore, cause i care about my mental health" made my day
I’m just searching for hate comments on the roast videos because they’re so fun to read
I love how Rudy makes slightly backhanded statements like "yeah, I used to listen to powermetal.....BEFORE I WAS TWELVE!" 😂😂😂
kills me hahhaha
