I'll be honest, I'm not sure what you're referring to when it comes to "two sides of my opinion" because I'm just saying how I feel lol! Choping, Mozart, Bach, and all the greatest music composers in history would like metal in my opinion. Metal is so similar with classical music composition. There's simply no real metalhead that don't like classical music, impossible in my opinion. It's so great that Mike mentioned it

I mean i could listen to Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, Michael Jackson and Jedi Mind Tricks, A tribe Called Quest (brilliant) after listening to Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC\DC, Iron Maiden ,Nirvana and Metallica...take music for what it is!...to me it's overall greatness

    So I am a huge fan of Slipknot. Mostly I can't understand the lyrics because I'm from Germany. When my dad killed his self last year, I was so fucked up. But it was the brutal sound of Slipknot that helped me in this time. They inspired me to play guitar. I am so thankful for that what Slipknot gave me.

    Slipknot says they wear masks because they feel it isn't about the people, its all about the music. They think that it doesn't't matter individually about who makes the music, it only about the music itself, if that makes sense. They also say it help them let go of their anger and passion and put it into the music

    • @BecomeTheKnight
      @BecomeTheKnight  8 років тому +60

      I can totally see that, and I feel that is a very worthy goal to reach. I don't believe they achieved that imho, but still at very least came close. Thanks for watching man \m/

      Become The Knight Become The Knight The members of Slipknot have also come out and said that the specific designs of their masks are the visualizations of their attitude and personality. Lead singer Corey Taylor explained it as having that outward attitude when interacting with people, then having that true/deep/personal part of oneself and he and the rest of the band try to bring that innermost part of themselves out in their masks. That is in addition to what James commented about taking away the musicians' identities so that fans and listeners can focus more on the music than who is making it.

      I know I’m a year late to this, but Corey did say on the Wikipedia Fact or Fiction that they were thrown onto a tiny stage by some guy from Sony Records, and he slammed them because they set them up for that gig. Then that whole thing kicked off with their actual career and they sent the guy a bunch of dead roses.

    I really like Slipknot a lot. Not my favorite band though (not even close). Mostly, I like them because I find their music relatable with my emotions. Most of the time I feel sad, angry or frustrated and to lock myself in the room and play some Slipknot with headphones on really helps me escape those emotional episodes of mine. Having said that, I enjoy listen to their music from time to time even with a good mood. PS: Nice work, I love your channel.

    The reason why I got into slipknot was because of how musically genius they are: involving percussionists in the band, having clean and rough singing, a drummer who doesn't just care about how fast his feet can hit the double kick drums, having lyrics that actually make you think, bass that doesn't just double under the guitar but has another groove inside the music. And on top of that, they give me a type of energy no other band has. I can admit that I mosh by myself to this music because it's just so intense that I need to release the beast within me.

    I love both metal and classical, though mostly modern classical than old classical, but still, that study doesn't seems far off. And music distortion I think is artistic and still music. Music is sound, but is a combination of sounds using vocal and/or instruments. If you see the 2001: A space Oddesey, there's one specific score that is just haunting and distorted. I would still call that music. the use of harmony, rhythm, or expression of emotions, even if it's just anger or hatred or just fear, is all music.

    What I like most about Slipknot is the fact that they continue to develop musically. It's pretty safe to say that none of their albums sound like the others. While the first 2 albums are extremely raw and gave them the "Nu metal" label, their later workis more melodic, while still maintaining that typical Slipknot aggression, although nowadays I would consider them to be more Alternative Metal than Nu Metal. Put all their albums on shuffle and you have a great mix of ups and downs, loud and raw and and melodic vocals. I think this is why they are comparibly easy to listen and get into.

    i'm not a fan of slipknot, but i think it's a good band to start to listen metal(there are other bands who work better for me). I think it's more easy to go on a kid who listen to slipknot and say something like: "Oh, you like slipknot, maybe you could like this band..." and go on from there than a guy who listen other type of music and want to share metal. I totally agree they put a hell of a show. It's something spectacular. Love your videos dude, keep going!

    I think the debate on wether it is music or not is very valid. Even Corey Taylor does Stone Sour because the music is more melodic and a little less hard hitting. But I believe that Slipknot isn't necessarily just noise because it is all interpretive. Slipknot themselves write their music to vent their emotions and deal with their inner "demons" and that is why I listen to them is to get out any aggression in a safe way.

    As a Slipknot fan, it's totally understandable that people aren't into them, and you brought up some good points. I can really appreciate a decent critical viewpoint without actively bashing the band. Personally, I would argue that Slipknot still fall within the realm of music, really for the same reasons that say, rap does. As much as I don't like rap, the conventions of it; the rhythms, tonal qualities, the structure, all secure it as music. If you ask me, that's all something needs to be music. Structure and tone. The structure is what makes it musical, and the tones are what make it appealing. Slipknot do push it, I think, but not very much. Regardless of a minor disagreement in our tastes, I really enjoyed this video. You're really insightful and I'll definitely be checking out more of your stuff. Keep up the good work!

    I love metal and I love bands like Eagles as well. Metal fans (I am not qualified enough to call myself a "Metalhead") aren't into violent shit actually. If people are shown the lyrics of songs like "Holy wars" from Megadeath or "Domination" from Pantera then they'll understand that metal actually deals with a lot more of the world than shit like pop does. Even metal wins over pop when making a love song like "This love" and "Cemetery gates" from Pantera are far better than any love song from any pop artist. Bands who make metal sound all gruesome by making disturbing videos and useless "die you motherfucker" lyrics make people think and label metal fans as stereotypical violence lovers while in reality we live the most simple life of them all. I even had a friend come over to my house and find out that I listen to metal music and ask "When did you start listening to them?" while I was long into metal.

    The reason I wanted to see this video is because of the discussion you put out and the challenges you give us.
    I'm 100% behind you saying "If this is music to you, defend it with history." I hate it when I'm listening to Mushroomhead or something and people say "How can you like that? It's just screaming and it's not even music." then I tear them a new one on "Why is rap music but somehow metal isn't" and they just shut up because they can't defend why it's music. And it's not just music, it's politics and religion and stupid stuff like superheroes. I love being challenged in a discussion but most people I talk to don't have much to add other than the same opinion reworded 3 different ways because they aren't well versed in history or even in their vocabulary.
    And I wanted to see how you'd react to the guy saying "Gang members?" XD I love that.

      If you are interested, I can argue a little on why rap is music. I like rap, but only some rap. I don't like most of the current rap (all that shit about paid sex, money and bling etc). Let me provide a prominent example of the rap I like: Tupac Shakur (RIP), yes he does write a few that I don't really like about the gangster scene, but his lyrics has the messages he wanted to put in. Tech N9ne is another rapper (who loves Slipknot by the way, he did a collab with Corey Taylor) I would like to bring up. Look at the lyrics and video of his "What If It Was Me", which tackles the frustrations of a cop in a dire situation of shoot or be shot. If the cop shoots, he will be seen as a villain, if the cop hesitates, he will be shot instead.
      Good rap focuses on two things: Meaning behind the lyrics (they can either be obvious or just subtle), and the flow of the words, the rhythm of it. Since this is an argument of music, I would bring up the part of rhythm and flow. The thing about rap is that rappers don't just say the words out, they recite it according to the rhythm they are given. The way the rappers make that flow in their lyrics is actually dependent on the background music, or as they call it, a rap beat. Similiar to reciting poetry like how Shakespeare performers do, rappers need to plan which syllable to add more emphasis on, in order to go with the flow of the rap. That, is a form of art there.
      Again, not a huge fan of rap, especially the current rap that most of my generation likes, but well, it has musical elements, there is some talent involved (or at least SOME of them).
      Fun fact: Rap is actually an abbreviation: it stands for Rhythm and Poetry :)

He's always loved blues and rock (even dabbled with experimental Jazz in the 70's) but as I started playing music and writing my own material he was very supportive and because it was stuff I had written he had a much easier time finding stuff he liked in it. Even if it was like crazy Brutal Death Metal and such, he also started going to concerts in his free time and it just snowballed. Now his favourite bands are Jinjer and Arch Enemy and he's become active in the metal community on facebook and actively looks for new metal :)

    Even Black Sabbath were very classically influenced. Hell, the riff for the song Black Sabbath, arguably the first real Metal song that spiraled the entire genre and influenced millions to come, was inspired by the song Mars the Bringer Of War from Gustav Holst's suite The Planets from the 1920s. On top of that, they started as a Bluesy Jazz band, of which is most notable in Bill Ward's Jazz-style drumming. It was just all turned to 11.

    So a lot of people make the "Slipknot only got big because of their look" argument. In your opinion, what sets Slipknot apart from say, Gwar or Mushroomhead? I mean, Slipknot is still playing amphitheaters holding 16K people while Mushroomhead and Gwar top out at small venues that maybe hold a thousand.

    • @BecomeTheKnight
      @BecomeTheKnight  7 років тому +1

      That is an excellent question! A big part of me says live production (particularly sound). Could also be the network of each band. I know Gwar is independent (except for the Relativity Records part......I don't remember if they actually signed with them or not) and at most signed with smaller labels. I don't know enough about Mushroomhead to comment confidently, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were in a similar situation. Slipknot has been w/ Roadrunner for a while and most likely has access to greater resources because of it.
      So why did Roadrunner pick Slipknot and not the other two? Probably because Stone Sour was already established at that time..........and I'm not sure when Roadrunner picked up Stone Sour, but more than coincidental that they would both be on the same label......That's my surface analysis of it, but a GREAT question no less. Thanks for watching \m/

    • @Crispy27
      @Crispy27 7 років тому +1

      Thanks for the reply! With that said, I'm not sure if Networking is the answer. Studio support is a major factor of course, but I'm not sure if that will translate into 18 years of momentum, especially considering how start-and-stop Slipknot have been over the years. Trouble is, I don't have near enough understanding of the industry or of music itself to pose an educated theory myself. I'm one of those people who just hear things and either like it or I don't without being able to really explain why, so it's kind of hard to have an in-depth conversation with someone like you who's able to break it down more deftly, so between that and the fact you don't like and haven't paid attention to the band, we're probably not coming to a consensus ha.
      Also, just throwing it out there, Slipknot already had two albums (and two Grammy nominations for whatever that's worth) by the time Roadrunner picked up Stone Sour. The two bands were local acts out of Des Moines when Corey Taylor left SS to join Slipknot, and the band pretty much ended there until Corey resurrected it in 02.

      Mushroomhead declined signing to Roadrunner Records due to that they didn't want to sign over the rights to their name and merch. RR felt the pressure of signing a "similarly-themed" band so... Slipknot.

      Slipknot is a gateway to metal music for many metal fans. I got into metal by listening to Iron Maiden and Slipknot.

    Well I personally think that music is a piece of entertainment that if anyone enjoys, then it can be considered music. It could be just noise to one person, but to another, it is the most beautiful symphony ever created.
