@@anemaldemomusic8182 I don't think he was, he took 1 month of guitar lessons and continued to just play what he thought sounded good. He probably didn't know anything about music theory or chords or notes, he just knew how to touch the strings in the right way.

That's exactly right though. He was a great songwriter. Just a mediocre musician. Although he was a way better guitar player than he gets credit for. He just tended not to use alot of his more complex abilities in his music because that's not the kind of songwriter he was. Dude could rip a solo though.

@@Chickennuggetjoes Its good, but I'd say intermediate skill level at best. I could play the entire Nirvana catalogue within my first year of playing (and I did). Realistically, most people who have been playing for 10 years plus, are probably more technically proficient at guitar than Kurt. Keep in mind, he only was playing for about that long and was self-taught. That being said, I know probably 10 people personally (including myself) who would shred Kurt into the shadow realm if were talking technical playing. Songwriting wise? We would get owned by Kurt
I think he was being disingenuous there. In his journals, there are pages where he diagrams different chord shapes and names. I think it’s clear that he picked up a lot of the fundamental basics of guitar. He just liked to act like he was dumber than he actually was. I bet he thought it was “punk rock” to not know how to play your instrument.
Kurt used to slowly destroy Dave's drums as they toured by drilling holes in them. The record company wouldn't get him a new kit so sometimes Dave would ask Kurt to just jump into it to destroy it so it would have to be replaced.
Why would he drill in them?

fun fact about the clip at 0:45 , the company who was paying him to sing refused to let them play their instruments, they insted wanted to play a recording of the sing and have kurt sing over it. obviously they were pissed about this so they destroyed all the equipment, kurt sung weirdly and they all made it obvious as hell that they werent playing their instruments. the drummer didnt even drum he just threw the sticks and headbanged. fucking legends
