Well, there are effects, even live... They add reverb to fatten the sound of her voice, most, if not all, growlers do that... It is her voice, but without the effect it wouldn't have the intensity... Which is fine btw, as long as it sounds good, IMO....
@@Kholdaimon Well, of course there's some effects from the soundboard, every singer and band has that, but what I was getting at is that a lot of people tend to think that she can only growl with effects pedals and what not which isn't true. The growl is all Tatiana, there are a few post production effects but they are not adding as much as you would think. Check out Perennial live at Wacken to see for yourself.
The big thing I notice is how low it gets. Lots of other examples her voice isn't so low, so there's a filter which is adding a low-end tone that she doesn't naturally have, but the fact she can do this at all is impressive.
@@bucklanddarrell3911 She does get that low. They could have layered the sound for the recording of this song, but she definitely goes this low (sometimes lower) live (I've seen it). Check out 4:02 here: ua-cam.com/video/U6rv5qi8-8s/v-deo.html
Reverb and some sort of compressor is what i heard, but she is an absolute monster and there are other videos where she scares the crap out of you without any effects.
Just a little minor polish on Tati's voice is post production. The cleans in the prechorus have a slight bit of reverb and doubling. In the chorus, just a little compression, with some doubling on the ends of some phrases. On the bridge, a little doubling and a few backtracks. Same with the final push, just a little compression a couple layers on the final line.
Yet another rabbit hole I'm excited and thrilled to see you stumble down. Jinjer is a breath of fresh air. Hearing them kind of ignited my excitement for new music; haven't felt that in a long time.
That was fun, I subbed. But, about those vocals... (edit) TL;DR watch the Judgement & Punishment one-take. She screws up just a bit in the first growling section of the chorus and makes her growl squeak. That wouldn't happen if it was an audio effect. The "live session" was to record their new drummer. The vocals are right off the album version and are layered to make them more intense, but Tatiana can growl even lower than this. The one part that she can't do live is she needs an extra second to switch from growls to belting so she just growls that belted line live. The original album version had one layer growled, one belted. This version they just did the belting line because it is so impressive. While Tati's skills aren't exactly routine for female growlers, they aren't all that unusual for the best of the bunch either. The best male growlers can go even lower, since a larger instrument can make a lower tone. In the case of Alex Terrible, he even does bits of the song Demolisher in shows without a mic after hushing the crowd and there are plenty of bootlegs to confirm this (if you watch the official video, they amplify that part - it isn't that loud in bootlegs, but the tone is real. It is a very real technique, done with the false vocal cords instead of the true vocal cords. Since the false cords aka vestibular folds aren't gendered (they are just flaps of tissue that close the throat against exhalation when lifting a heavy weight or pushing out a hard turd) male and female growls can sound very similar - as an example of that, I recommend Rage Of Light's "Mechanicals" live where the male growler who does backing vocals sounds almost indistinguishable from the growls of the female lead singer. While similar sounds can be made with something I've heard is called "dehumanizer," growling vocalists like Otep Shamaya (see also "Ghost Flowers" off the Confrontation live DVD) also do voiceover work for movies and games to voice monstrous characters. It's a thing. Anyway, for more from Jinjer, check out Perennial live at Wacken to see them on stage. There is a tiny bit of post production, but it sounds quite similar to bootlegs of that show. Cheers!
the vocals are not off the album version. when she hits those high notes towards the end, on the album version theres growling going on over top of it. theres none here. also if you listen close enough you can hear subtle differences between them as well.
@@Metal_89 I own both MP3s so I put them both in Audacity and overlapped them. If the vocal tracks were different there would be small (or not so small) differences that would be very obvious when listening to it. There is effectively no difference. Also note that the video description discusses recording some vocal layers, but makes no mention of recording the main vocal tracks.
she does it for real, it's not a plugin, she does it live, she can go from the clean voice to the "GRRRRR!" voice in a second. I'm not a fan of the band but I can tell they are all very talented.
"Teacher, Teacher" is probably the best example of their musicianship. It is another official video, but really shows the talent level of the whole group on a much higher level, in my opinion of course.
Jinjer -"Judgement and punishment" one take vocal performance will answer your question whether or not it's her voice. Or any of their their Live performance as well. Great reaction👍looking forward to you diving deeper in jinjer rabbit hole🤘
A little tip for 'rewinding' consistently: a tap of the 'j' key will back up 10 seconds, whether playing or paused-- *love* seeing people's reaction when Tatiana kicks in her 'chest voice'!!
This is by far my favorite reaction to this song... I love how you appreciate all of the band members contributions equally, and I especially enjoy the way you break down the musical aspect in detail!
That "Jazz" element from an eastern European band shows how deeply talented they are. This is not one of my favorite bands but wow, I so respect their abilities.
BEST JINJER REACTION VIDEO YET~! Though I wish I had taped the reaction my 8yo girl had to it (she ran out of the room) Next nomination - Chlorine & Wine by Baroness.
I discovered so much great music after discovering Jinjer. I started watching reactions to it, liking the reactors & following them. Jinjer is probably all-time favorite band.
Same here, finding analysis channels following great songs has introduced me to loads of great music that I now love. Started off with Nightwish going into Dimash's SOS which is what led to my learning about Jinjer a few years back and it's just been grand :))
Alrighty. UA-cams pause key is "k", while "j" goes back 10 seconds and "l" goes forward 10 seconds. "m" is mute/unmute. comma and period can skip through frames. So for going back a bit you can always go back the same amount of time using the keyboard with very little effort.
I love how there's a sustained droning not on the guitar or base as the arrangement quiets down again, into a dreamy atmosphere, and then here dreamy lyrics/singing.
If you like really layered songs, the Forty Six & 2 by TOOL is a really good bet. I’d also have to recommend some Alice In Chains (my personal favorite being Would?). Thank you for the great videos, keep up the great work! 👍
Search for Tatiana with prophecy, bad before jinjer. It's like a bar venue the sound system is bad but you can belive there is no processing (or even decent equipment) its all her.
I love you man! You are not a toddler, not a young boy either but you have the surprise, the excitement and the sheer delight of a summer day spent in a toy store. And its heartwarming. Keep on. Great content
That’s not what he is talking about when he says “hook”... a “hook” is the catch of the song, oftentimes the chorus.. read a book before you make a shit comment
The hook thing was explained by other coment. In case of her voice it’s obwious that she uses effects and she uses them a lot. That doesn’t change the fact that she can do growl. In this supposed live performance there are multiple lines of vocal with different effects.
@Adam Smith I love keyboard warriors. But this topic caught my attention the other day because I did not post this comment and had to change my passwords. Ironically, I am a Jinjer fan and have seen them live and can say that she does use some minimal voice processing but her voice is pure and she sounds very "similar" to their studio recordings unlike the majority of her female counterparts in metal. And Adam, next time you insult someone online like a big man take a look in the mirror and remind yourself who you are and who you may be talking too on the other side.
There are definitely some effects on the vocals, (significant reverb and some compression at the least) but that switch is not easy to do one way or the other. (Not at that level, but I'm a vocalist and can do similar switches) I also play bass and some guitar, so to me I really think of it like kicking on a pedal. But I think the main reason why reason why (besides sexism and biological ignorance, let's be honest people who lack any knowledge of singing or anatomy probably don't expect a woman to use that type of growl/fry) I think everyone thinks those vocals are a lot more heavily treated than they are is because she has an unusually *clear* delivery in that style compared to many others.
When I first heard and watched this I imagined myself in a quiet cozy coffee shop. Then all of a suddenly I found myself in a sweaty dusty mosh pit flailing my arms and legs with a bloody nose..... and back to the coffee shop and back to the pit!!!!
I like some metal, not really a metal head, but this is maybe a perfect song. Most of their other stuff is heavier, i really like "Cloud Factory" and "I speak Astronomy"
I love seeing people when they hear Tatiana sing for the 1st time, and even moreso when they hear her growl for the 1st time. 😁 It always makes my day!
It is fun watching people hear what I feel is the best musical representation of the duality of humankind for the first time. Each member of the band is going back and forth in between the kind/gentle sound/feel, and the brutal harbinger of death so effortlessly appearing. It is a highly developed skill for each of them. I finally found a copy of the King of Everything online today and bought it after scouring local stores to no avail.
Live at Wacken 2013, not the original singer. Let’s be honest, if we want him to truly enjoy Nightwish as a first listen then it needs to be the current vocalist, not the one that hasn’t been in the band for 16 years now.
It's a natural type of "effect," really. Just the way that your voice starts to kind of gravel out if you try to hit a note that's too low, for example, or the vocal fry that many have when speaking taken to an extreme effect. Vibrate the so-called "false" vocal folds instead of your full voiced folds you would use to sustain a normal pitched note, and push air through so you can get sound and form words (I think this is a fry scream, though there are several different techniques, as evidenced by the diversity of sounds you can hear vocalists make in the more "extreme" subgenres of metal, ranging from squealy sounds to really rough growls). She definitely uses some delay and stuff, too, but the "harsh" sounds are produced with physical technique and control (from tons of practice, especially to do safely, since doing it wrong can permanently damage your vocal folds). Switching between the two sounds is quite difficult, and she does an incredible job, which belies a lot of effort and discipline! Great reaction, loved how much you keyed into the drums instantly.
I second. The types of technique is guttural singing. Some inuk (native Canadian ) people do this, as well asians regions such as mongolia. In non-metal ways.
Pisces is basically a loveletter to Opeth's Blackwater park. Honestly I heard this song without knowing who's the artist and I thought Opeth had a female vocalist featuring. Nonetheless, Jinjer is the most badass live performing band I've ever witnessed.
This is one of my FAVORITE songs, and gives me goose bumps EVERY time I here her go from that low docile tone to absolutely smashing. Like, uggggh. I love it. So so so much.
Every time I watch a reaction of this by someone who knows music well... it's always about the "Ghost notes" and how sick the drummer is. Hehe. A bad ass drummer wields some crazy power man.
I really like experts commenting and breaking down heavy music because you really get the talent and great musicianship on display. Loving these reactions. Cheers.
Watch Devin Townsend - Kingdom live at emgtv next! You're going to flipout with his voice!! another hit (likes this one) with the reaction world too 🤘🏻
this is the kind of music I listen to VERY regularly. But when I first saw this video it blew my mind. I had never heard such gutteral screams, and then those incredible fry's she gets to, all while being able to easily go back to completely clean vocals. Definitely taken aback for a hot second. Tatiana is by far one of my favorite vocalists now The whole song, since I first heard it, has given me goosebumps. Every. Single. Time. Phenomenal musicians all around. The fills the drummer does are REALLY interesting, but feel like they naturally belong there. Actually every single Jinjer song gives me goosebumps Edit: I REALLY appreciate coming at this from a composer's perspective. I know most people find this song incredible in every way, but coming from a composer... noticing all the subtleties... it is REALLY interesting to watch
It just never gets old.. Great reaction. I'm here following the first Nightwish reaction. Non-monetized channel = sincere reaction. Instant sub from me.
i love it when Jinjer gets a new fan! Funny thing about this video, the purpose was to showcase their new, incredible drummer, but the reactions to Tatiana are what have made this explode. There're no effects on her voice, but obviously there's some overdubbing. It's much more subtle than in the studio arrangement, however, where the harsh and clean vocals are mixed and intertwined. The range of her harsh vocals is as eye-opening as her clean range.

@@bucklanddarrell3911 Have you not seen Who is Gonna be the one live yet? I challenge you to watch that, and tell me she doesn't get that low.
@@jayhegener3028 Yea, she's very good but to be fair, there are lots of effects going on live too.
You are probably the only reactor I never skip the comments section.
Man, thanks - 🤙🤙
She has a natural voice. I was lucky to see them live last year and at 56 years old i have seen a lot of metal bands.this was one of the best.
@Lauren Fazenbaker wow you got a high five. I was down the front and got some good pics.
@Lauren Fazenbaker where did you see them? I saw then at Newcastle uk.
@Lauren Fazenbaker wow Ohio. Sounds nice?
I was about to see them in Memphis TN, but then the pandemic hit. I do not even know if they rescheduled that yet.
@@NikkLiberos They're doing a few, smaller crowd continental europe gigs at the moment.
When Tatiana opens her mouth, The planet stops moving and everyone listens to Metal perfection.
Awful.
Lol😂
Truth !
It's disgusting.
@@MetaFootballTV for you maybe
Reverb and some sort of compressor is what i heard, but she is an absolute monster and there are other videos where she scares the crap out of you without any effects.
Just a little minor polish on Tati's voice is post production. The cleans in the prechorus have a slight bit of reverb and doubling. In the chorus, just a little compression, with some doubling on the ends of some phrases. On the bridge, a little doubling and a few backtracks. Same with the final push, just a little compression a couple layers on the final line.
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score. As a composer it is a symphony you will be BLOWN AWAY by.
I raise your bid with exellent musicians. ;-) Please do Ghost Love Score
Definitely!!! ua-cam.com/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/v-deo.html
i raise the bid also
Abso-fricking-lutely! Do it, oh great de-composer! You'll not regret it!
Yes and make sure you watch the official live video from wakken
The gutural is natural, Tatiana is killing it!
Yet another rabbit hole I'm excited and thrilled to see you stumble down. Jinjer is a breath of fresh air. Hearing them kind of ignited my excitement for new music; haven't felt that in a long time.
@@Midnightmidway Plenty to explore.

you: "I was expecting some rock"
*metal riff and growls kick in*
I've lost count of the amount of times I've watched this, and every single time his reaction just cracks me up!!! XD
Has anyone requested Gojira yet? If not a great place to start with them would be "The Gift of Guilt" they're a phenomenal band!
Agreed, very unique too. Love them.
I would go with Explosia or Flying Whales because it builds up very nice
He’s done some already. I would love to see Flying Whales
Your reply was awesome, glad I saw it
No effects on her voice. Just pure skill. She’s incredible.
This woman sounded like a jaguar on the attack at the last few seconds. She's as beautiful as she is gifted.
she does it for real, it's not a plugin, she does it live, she can go from the clean voice to the "GRRRRR!" voice in a second. I'm not a fan of the band but I can tell they are all very talented.
Yup! Devin Townsend kimgdom next. Nightwish - ghost love score live.
"Teacher, Teacher" is probably the best example of their musicianship. It is another official video, but really shows the talent level of the whole group on a much higher level, in my opinion of course.
Agreed. It's a much more versatile song.
Yep...the video version is cool, but there are also two ‘official’ live versions that are killer as well 😎🔥🤘
totally agree
Jinjer -"Judgement and punishment" one take vocal performance will answer your question whether or not it's her voice. Or any of their their Live performance as well. Great reaction👍looking forward to you diving deeper in jinjer rabbit hole🤘
A little tip for 'rewinding' consistently: a tap of the 'j' key will back up 10 seconds, whether playing or paused-- *love* seeing people's reaction when Tatiana kicks in her 'chest voice'!!
I get goosebumps at the end of this song too. Every time. And I've heard it hundreds of times.
I'm squealing like a little girl right now and I ain't even seen this yet. Can't wait for you to see the transition.
" was expecting like a rock kind of a...." LMAO
This is by far my favorite reaction to this song... I love how you appreciate all of the band members contributions equally, and I especially enjoy the way you break down the musical aspect in detail!
Jinjer have some big old-style Opeth vibes going on here, everything is definitely their own though. It's an immense performance!
That "Jazz" element from an eastern European band shows how deeply talented they are. This is not one of my favorite bands but wow, I so respect their abilities.
Its 100% natural, and from what I've heard Tatiana has had no real vocal training. Shes just blessed I guess.
No training, and she confessed in an interview that she drinks and smokes, too.
Watching off genre or unfamiliar professionals talk about Tatiana is hilarious.
BEST JINJER REACTION VIDEO YET~! Though I wish I had taped the reaction my 8yo girl had to it (she ran out of the room)
Next nomination - Chlorine & Wine by Baroness.
Thanks Man!
We need videos of people watching Pisces reactions now. I feel like we all giggle and smile in anticipation at the same timestamps lol
Also "arrow keys" backward & forward for 5sec skip
I only use the spacebar and arrow keys. I must be something...
it looks like he's using WMP and not youtube, but I might be mistaken
Holy sh/t thank you Nico, I had no idea there was a frame key.
THANK YOU! Been wondering how people do that! lol
Yeah, her voice is awesome. If you want to hear more like this, you should check out Spiritbox - Rule of Nines
I love how there's a sustained droning not on the guitar or base as the arrangement quiets down again, into a dreamy atmosphere, and then here dreamy lyrics/singing.
4 Years later and I still come peoples reactions haha
If you like really layered songs, the Forty Six & 2 by TOOL is a really good bet. I’d also have to recommend some Alice In Chains (my personal favorite being Would?). Thank you for the great videos, keep up the great work! 👍
+1 for Would?
"Hoooooooo SHIT!" We have ALL been there my man lmfao. What a great video. Looking forward to more content
That moment you realize that there is no effects on her voice....its just pure talent

NO EFFECTS!! She’s that good bud!! Check out the live show in Melbourne.Australia!! Mind blowing!!😱
Tatiana and Eugene [bassist] said in an interview they don't think they have a genre because they draw from so many different ones.

I'd like to see a reaction of you finding out that the "hook" is her voice and not some synthetic machined up auto tune voice over.
Tatiana do not need special effect to switch LOL.... she is the effect.
I like some metal, not really a metal head, but this is maybe a perfect song. Most of their other stuff is heavier, i really like "Cloud Factory" and "I speak Astronomy"
"Teacher, Teacher!" Has sick clean/fry vocal. It's really amazing how she controls her voice
I love that look of: Are you fucking kidding me? XD
New fan of your channel here for the obligatory Nightwish request of Ghost Love Score! As a composer I think you’ll really appreciate it.
Wow, that was a wonderful explanation! Thank you.
I second. The types of technique is guttural singing. Some inuk (native Canadian ) people do this, as well asians regions such as mongolia. In non-metal ways.
I love your username and profile picture!
@@jaketheadventurer2772 Thanks! It's become my go to on a lot of social platforms haha
Pisces is basically a loveletter to Opeth's Blackwater park. Honestly I heard this song without knowing who's the artist and I thought Opeth had a female vocalist featuring. Nonetheless, Jinjer is the most badass live performing band I've ever witnessed.
Them and Tool.
This is one of my FAVORITE songs, and gives me goose bumps EVERY time I here her go from that low docile tone to absolutely smashing. Like, uggggh. I love it. So so so much.
Women growling are just so awesome. Goosebumps indeed!
Every time I watch a reaction of this by someone who knows music well... it's always about the "Ghost notes" and how sick the drummer is. Hehe. A bad ass drummer wields some crazy power man.
Devin Townsend “Kingdom” !!
I was 4 feet away from Tatiana during a concert last year, that’s definitely her voice lol. It was the best concert I’ve ever been to.
the voice is real
I really like experts commenting and breaking down heavy music because you really get the talent and great musicianship on display. Loving these reactions. Cheers.
Nope...it's all her! Her live performances are all the proof you need! 🖤
Next choice naturally is Devin Townsend, "Higher" in Plovdiv or "Kingdom" (EMG TV) or Deadhead life at Royal Albert Hall. Have fun listening!
Watch Devin Townsend - Kingdom live at emgtv next! You're going to flipout with his voice!! another hit (likes this one) with the reaction world too 🤘🏻
Goosebumps are still so real when I watch this such a great produced track
this is the kind of music I listen to VERY regularly. But when I first saw this video it blew my mind. I had never heard such gutteral screams, and then those incredible fry's she gets to, all while being able to easily go back to completely clean vocals. Definitely taken aback for a hot second. Tatiana is by far one of my favorite vocalists now
The whole song, since I first heard it, has given me goosebumps. Every. Single. Time. Phenomenal musicians all around. The fills the drummer does are REALLY interesting, but feel like they naturally belong there. Actually every single Jinjer song gives me goosebumps
Edit: I REALLY appreciate coming at this from a composer's perspective. I know most people find this song incredible in every way, but coming from a composer... noticing all the subtleties... it is REALLY interesting to watch
"Virgin innocence" is actually the state of a vocal coach before hearing this song

She's amazing she goes straight from that growl into almost a jazz or r&b sound of voice.
i love it when Jinjer gets a new fan!
