She does use effects, BUT she doesn’t use any sort of “Pitch Shifter” (to lower tonality) nor does she use Any sort of “Distortion” (to make her voice sound harsher). None of the truly good metal Vocalists use either of the above to raise the quality of the vocalist. They use effects to add dynamics to the sounds, that’s it.
@@El_Gordo_Chechy haha, I want to say this to every reactor that says that, but most won’t understand what I’m talking about. I know the Mighty Decomposing Composer will. 😂 I completely understand the assumption though, simply because of how deep Tatiana’s growls/gutturals are for a woman, but not only that; her petite stature is logically contradictory to the fuckin’ MASSIVE tone that she produces.
Eugene answered this a while back. they use distortion in the studio on her voice to smooth it out but not live. they use a delay in studio and live also. she also does use the dredded mic cupping live as a tool to go lower. she just did an interview saying so. she does not use pitch correction or auto tune crap. in studio if you f up just do a retake. and live it is different depending on how she feels.
@@williamcody3415 yeah, I saw her interview recently. She doesn’t really do a whole lot of mic cupping during their live shows, the only time I noticed her doing that was toward the end of the set because she (and I along with everyone else) are wore the fuck out. I didn’t see the interview with Eugene, but I’ve seen them live a few times; they’re pretty damn close to the album sound (as much as any band is really).
@@williamcody3415 - Tatiana never said she cups the mic on purpose, it was the guy who interviewed her that made that assumption. She said that she holds the mic by the "head" because she doesn't want to look like an ESC contestant (or something similar) and the grip is better there. Holding the mic the way she does is not cupping. : )
There's so much going on with this band I don't know how anyone could be expected to break down their songs in one sitting, the drummer is so unbelievably good, the bass player is so bloody dynamic, and the guitarist plays such beautiful chord extensions, and that's before we even get to Tatiania's unreal vocals and her excellent performances. I haven't been so impressed with a band since I first heard Soundgarden or Pantera in the 90s.
Breath of fresh air for the Metal scene, lets all face it, we all were getting a bit stale and crusty, just like my 54 year old bones. Been over a decade, since some forward thinking musicians like Jinjer, and other bands who have been doing the underground slog, have finally transformed, and even transcended our favourite music genre. Jinjer are so tight musically, and so talented to be able to switch genres multiple times during a song, they blow me away. Tatiana will inspire so many vocalists, to try and compete at her level, but so will all the other members of the band. Thank you, for your breakdown of this song, and how much you have grown as a Metal connoisseur.
They posted a new video a few days ago for their song "Home Back". They do a jazz breakdown in the middle of it that is turning people's heads. The song is about the war in eastern Ukraine where they grew up.
@@deadcrow6888 the song is about them wanting to return to their home town. It's been in civil war for a while and they had to relocate to Kiev to stay away from it. It's pro communist and anti communist forces. The pros want to return to Russia...it's a whole thing, but the song speaks for them and their desires
THEY ARE TUNED TO C#...THATS WHY ITS SO DN HEAVY...YES ITS THE SAME DRUMMER VLAD..WHO IS A PIANO PRODIGY..WAAY TALENTED...GOOD STUFF....PEACE FROM THE NORTHEAST..
It's not really any sort of harmonizer or plugin adding to her voice beyond the "standard" echo, reverb, and EQ etc that you do in the mixing process, all the harmonies are separate and they're just layered in the session. The growls are layered (low, mids, and highs usually), there's definitely some doubling, vocal harmonies etc at various points, but they're just punched in during recording like you would any kind of overdub. There's minimum 6 vocal tracks going on here for sure, a main vocal track, a main double, a harmony track, growl low, growl mid, gang vocals, perhaps the growls get doubled too to make them extra big and so you can pan them for some of that wide thickness, and possibly a seventh for the clean passage where the vocals drop in dynamics and a lot of the reverb etc seems to drop with it, but that could be done with automation too. So yeah there's studio magic going on, but not in terms of FX and plugins, more-so excellent mixing and layering skills with excellent source recordings from Tati and the instrumentation! Live she basically has to pick which vocal parts she's going to do since obviously she can't growl and clean sing at the same time, so like on the "mercy, mercy, merciful" line, the first two words are mid-growls, but merciful is layered clean with a growl, which you can do in studio, but live she growls all three words since her voice is sat in that range and she won't have to flip out of it for one word, only to drop back into growls on the next line.
I don’t think he said she USED a harmonizer. I believe he said that in that one section of the chorus, she COULD HAVE used one; that doing so would have made it sound more full.
Yeah their studio versions of their music has a lot of layering going on. They even tend to do this during some of their live performances. This song specifically has 2 or 3 extra layers going on. If you listen carefully you can even hear some clean vocals going through her gutter vocals here and there. They've done an amazing job putting all of it together without making it sound chaotic.
Jinjervitis strikes again! huge rabbit hole...Perennial (live at Wakken), Who is Gonna Be the One? (Live), I Speak Astronomy, Judgement and Punishment (Tati's one take sing through, no effects video is phenomenal) ...to start with 😬

there are ofc effects and doubling. if its an issue watch "Judgement and punishment - one take vocals" if effects are getting in the way of nailing down her abilities.
There is postproduction in this video, you can hear it in the "merciful" part, there are two voices, one growling and other singing at the same time, probably from both sessions, there is also a part were the crowd growls, probably is from one of the shows, but its amplified and cleaned. This took my song of the year for 2019. Tremendous stuff. Vlad on the drums makes me smile with his reluctance to admit they've relented to some 4/4 for that huge sounding chorus. :) Describing Tatiana's vocal delivery as a "slam poetry" sound thru the verses is spot-on btw- kudos.
You hit the nail on the head with the vocal effects. They've stated in interviews that on the recordings they use post, live she only uses a delay and for certain tracks (perennial etc.) pre-recorded sections! Keep up the awesome work! You give a ton of insight to a young music lover, rock on!
My Jinjer suggestion is a song called Ape! Either the one shot live or the official music video. Another suggestion is a song "No Hoard of Value" official lyric video! In my opinion thes are Jinjer's most underrated songs that have a great reaction potential!
@The Bullfrog those 2 are among my favorite tracks, seconded! But to be honest I love all their songs lol. (Except Waltz, sorry. Still an... ok track though).
@@Qyngali I love all there songs as well! My one exception is Bad Water! Yes it has a sick bass line, but the rest of the track falls short of my Jinjer standard.

I keep rewatching the part at 12:35 because it perfectly shows a first time listening to Jinjer. I can see your head move upwards, im guessing you were assuming where the song was going at that time, then they just deliver it perfectly where all anyone listening can do it just throw their hands knowing they just nailed it.
Because you mentioned Metalcore. In an Interview, Tatjana said they don't play Metal, but in general "Extreme Music", because they have both extreme heavy and extreme slow parts. Keep up your videos, love them
great ear on the whole step down, its drop A on a six string. The engineering on this track is genius, everything gets it own space. It is the same drummer as the Pisces video, to answer your question. It is also very common for harsh vocalists to double or even sometimes triple layer their tracks, for body and punch, and they typically use those same tracks for live performances as part of the backing tracks/effects. Keep the analysis coming, man, great to hear the insight!
I've enjoyed your reactions recently. I'm a big fan of Jinjer, Snarky Puppy, Porcupine Tree, Polyphia, Dream Theater, among many others. I'm a jazz guy myself. Didn't go into music, but most of my friends did. I was the only non-music major in my university jazz ensemble (trumpet, so really like Don Ellis for his crazy time signatures and Maynard Ferguson for his power). I really like the theory-based analysis you give. Keep it up! Band Maid is one you haven't done yet that has a good reaction following. Probably my favorite newish rock band. Domination (live) is a great one. Unleash the Archers is also awesome power metal. Otherwise, keep up your normal selection. You are batting a strong average on bands I like.
There is a lot of Post preduction tricks done in the editing. But are wonderfully done in this song. However Tatianas ablity to hold the note and carry it through her changes even thou it may be many octives lower is truly the best part. The band is a whole different story. Amazing!
Don't worry so much about them using layering to their vocals. The "organic" sound the comments were referring to is that she can produce the growl without augmenting her voice. The vocal layering with the growls throughout the song is VERY common in metal. Most of the time it's for emphasis on words and you get a layering of the high pitched scream with a lower one. They reproduce it live by adding the one the vocalist isn't doing live to a backing track that's played with the song. Also that is the same drummer from pices!! He's been around for a quite a bit at this point so he's in most of their music videos. Love your reactions! Keep up up great work!
Congratulations to the nice reactions you offer to us. I really enjoy this like all others I watched. Please keep on. It’s so interesting to listen to your analysis of the songs. To Jinjer: I totally agree and there are without a doubt layers/effects at different passages of the song. And I like it because it’s the Studio Audio Version of the Song. I’m not sure but I think they don’t layer „too“ much in their live performances- which are incredible. To get an impression of their stage performances you should pick „perennial“ live at Wacken. Also „Who is gonna be the one“ live is a very good example. Merry Christmas 🎁 🎄 to you and your family. Stay safe and healthy. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Love your reactions my friend! You nailed so many things/thoughts that frankly others just will not! Time for an actual live performance! There are many.... "Perennial-Live at Wacken" is a good showcase of the band....and of course Tatiana's one take vocal performance on "Judgement and Punishment(has a little reggae mixed with Metal)" BTW I love that you don't focus on lyrics, to me that's what it should be. Focus on the whole package then maybe later on if wanted look at lyrics.
Their older songs are really good, but I prefer the newer albums from last year. They keep getting better and better. Love the videos. Definitely need to check out Periphery - Reptile! You will love it
Great review / reaction! The overdub you hear is a percussive-style tapping on the bass to add texture. If we weren't all blown away by Tatiana's vocals we'd be mesmerized by the composition and arrangement of the music (not to mention the actual playing). This band is a powerhouse.
Really good video yet again! You definetly have to check out the one take vocal performance of "Judgement (&Punishment)" and also the live performance of "Perennial" at Wacken. See you in the next one :)
I too heard in the chorus harmonies as well as doubling throughout the song.. Also. when watching some other gear related videos they talk about the effects they use.. including a pitch/octave effect they use when playing live. (they drop her vocals an octave in some parts as a harmony) so you are hearing correctly.
Great breakdown and analysis! I'm glad you picked the official video for this song. It's one of their few where the studio version slightly outdoes the live version, but only because of all of the little details that would be near impossible to do live, but that being said you should check out their live in Melbourne version of Teacher Teacher on your own. Their ability live makes it well worth the time. I'm sure many have suggested "Perennial live at Wacken" and agree that should be the next, but at some point check out "Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev". It is a personal favorite live recording of one of my favorite Jinjer songs.
People sometimes don't understand effects. It can be something as simple as layering vocals, which Jinjer does do. There's also some echoing and reverb. Of course it's got effects guys. Every artist that produced and mixed has effects on their vocals. Her scream is organic, but to make recordings sound fuller they mix several recordings together.
Aloha Geebz \o/ The most impressive fact on Jinjer for me is, it doesn't matter how they start a song, slow, medium, fast, however, you NEVER know how and where you end. That is the magic of Jinjer and what makes the band so unique.
I love listening to your deep knowledge of music and your openness to experience and breakdown all kinds of different genres. I had the same reaction to my first Jinjer experience as well. Hell of a voice! You have the perfect personality for these reaction videos. Keep on entertaining!
So in the slow section when you heard that second guitar, you're absolutely right. That's a backing track, also played by Roman. Live, IIRC, sometimes they include that backing track, other times they omit it and just let the chords ring. I think for the album version they had it to sort of keep the momentum of the song moving. Live, Tatiana gets the crowd clapping to keep the momentum up. See, Jinjer used to be a 5-piece. A lot of their older songs, therefore have two guitar parts, and they use the backing tracks to cover those parts. Moving forward, I think they probably just got used to that compositional style and the space-filling it's possible to do, so they still use it sometimes. I think I remember hearing them talk about considering adding a fifth member again to cover those extra parts live, but they said that they're just really comfortable with each other and happy with the dynamic they have, so they'd rather use a computer to fill in the extra parts here and there.
I can hear the double of her growl voice for that tiny part, to make it sound big. Also she doubles just before that with her singing voice and her growl voice combined. I like all the mixture of music genres that they use. Here, they use a little hip hop and rap, and then they have jazz parts. I’ve also heard their reggae on other songs. This band can do it all, which makes them so exciting. I’m just surprised they’ve not more popular. I wonder I’d all this recognition on UA-cam, will make them a bigger band. They deserve it, with all the talent and creativity they got.
My favorite Jinjer song as a huge fan. This slow bridge is my favorite musical moment with infamous Rosetta Stoned bridge. When i hear both, instant goosebumps. AND i heard them a lot lol. Nice reaction as always :)
Also they use effects and this is pretty post produced song. Of course the live performance will be different as vocals(i saw them live last year) but it does not take away from the experience. There is no cheating in their music. Their live is as good as their recordings, different but beautiful in their own sense. I don't know why people obsess over these things. They give us amazing music both as album records and live. Why bother ourselves with these superficial things?
In Jinjer songs, Tatiana uses her growls to change the point of view of the lyrics like in this song, or to emphasis certain words or to change the emotion they want the listener to feel etc. Cheers

This took my song of the year for 2019. Tremendous stuff.
Vlad on the drums makes me smile with his reluctance to admit they've relented to some 4/4 for that huge sounding chorus. :)
Describing Tatiana's vocal delivery as a "slam poetry" sound thru the verses is spot-on btw- kudos.
You hit the nail on the head with the vocal effects. They've stated in interviews that on the recordings they use post, live she only uses a delay and for certain tracks (perennial etc.) pre-recorded sections! Keep up the awesome work! You give a ton of insight to a young music lover, rock on!
Very nice reaction, my man. You should definitely try making a reaction to- Who is gonna be the one. Looking forward to it
iirc, this is studio audio over a concert montage. When you get the chance, watch the Live in Melbourne version. It is more organic
Also your reaction to her highest note...
Yeaup that’s why we love her. Just amazing and i can tell you agree
My Jinjer suggestion is a song called Ape! Either the one shot live or the official music video. Another suggestion is a song "No Hoard of Value" official lyric video! In my opinion thes are Jinjer's most underrated songs that have a great reaction potential!
Or "Who's gonna be the one" official live by Jinjer! Amazing song, but a little more commonly reacted too!
@@thebullfrog5207 Would be boring if everybody liked the exact same things/songs/movies etc. :) I actually LIKE bad water haha, but more power to you for not.
Ape is one of my all time faves! Also When Two Empires Collide.
I love your channel because you actually break it down but you also embrace music outside of your normal. Great Job!
As a composer you'd probably enjoy the hell out of Wintersun! Try "Sons of Winter and Stars" and "Time", the Sonic Pump Studio session! 🤘🏻
Great review I like skilled reviews
This is the song as it appears on the album (produced) with Live footage in the video. They use reverb and echo at times to make the sound fuller.
I love the way you break things down and it helps me appreciate these songs even more. Don't worry about the haters!
Who Is Going To Be The One (live). Truly live, and amazing. My favorite live of there’s, hands down.
Discovered Jinjer thanks to your reactions, I'm loving this band now, thank you!
Keep the analysis coming, man, great to hear the insight!
great reaction! You are at my TOP3 reactionists list!
Mahalo mate....another great reaction, keep em coming 😎🤘
You're right about harmonizing with layering extra vocal tracks in post. Even tool does that. Enya couldn't perform live.
It's great to see someone who enjoys her "normal" singing voice. Like you, I just really love her tone, no matter what or how she is singing.
Their older songs are really good, but I prefer the newer albums from last year. They keep getting better and better. Love the videos. Definitely need to check out Periphery - Reptile! You will love it
both this EP "Micro" and the ful length "Macro" were released in 2019. March and October I think
You keep doing you, we love your breakdowns and love your reactions!
Oh hell yeah, this song's been stuck in my head for 3 or 4 months now. Looking forward to this reaction!
I appreciate your ability to really listen to music, not just hear it long enough to see if you approve.
I like your perspective on the video picking up on things others miss . Keep up the great work.
Aloha Geebz \o/ The most impressive fact on Jinjer for me is, it doesn't matter how they start a song, slow, medium, fast, however, you NEVER know how and where you end. That is the magic of Jinjer and what makes the band so unique.
Home back is a masterpiece and the next song you should listen to by Jinjer
I love listening to your deep knowledge of music and your openness to experience and breakdown all kinds of different genres. I had the same reaction to my first Jinjer experience as well. Hell of a voice! You have the perfect personality for these reaction videos. Keep on entertaining!
Absolutely love your reactions! They are genuine and honest. Your experience with music and the appreciation of it is how I feel as well! Keep it up!!
Love your reaction to jinjer. You are a nice man. Parennial should be next to react to. Merry christmas. Peter from London.
Ive seen her live 4 times and heard this song alot..its amazing
nice! i finally found a channel with a good mix of pauses/explanations and enjoying the music. most people pause too much. thanks for your videos :)
This is an absolutely amazing song. Just the sheer diversity they fit into the one track. Don't listen to the haters. Say what you hear.
I've watched most of your reactions this past week. I love your personality and values! Keep being a great guy and enjoy life and music
Perennial live at Wacken is a must! Seeing/ hearing their talent live is next level.
In Jinjer songs, Tatiana uses her growls to change the point of view of the lyrics like in this song, or to emphasis certain words or to change the emotion they want the listener to feel etc. Cheers
