Thank you for looking up a live version as well in one video, usually we have to wait weeks for a second live reaction. Seeing her live right after the studio session really seals the deal.
its live with backing track. there are vocal overdubs on that backing track , you can hear them really obviously in the 2nd pre chorus, where there's clearly 2 or more vocals singing. And also the added whispering in the break. The sound is all real though it's just triple / quad tracked for extra thickness
As always, the expression-at-first-recognition was and will-always-be : Priceless. Thank you, friend of Charlie's**, for participating in his 3rd grade science project ("What is the maximal opening of the human jaw"). I've started doing some harsh vocals myself, putting an over-caffeinated 66 year old vocal tract to the test. To me, it is very relaxing and gives me a new context to re-learn aspects of head/neck anatomy (an essential pre-requisite to what I used to teach at the dental school- Care of Medically Compromised Patients). It has also helped me gain more control over that pesky 'raise-the-larynx' problem I have when I test the boundaries of my 'normal-singing' voice. Your guest asked 'How do you know you can do this?' as a vocalist?"
Yo Randall, this is awesome. I love your story of being a harsh vocal “hobbyist” I think there is seriously something to this. When I mess around with some harsh vocalism (though it doesn’t help when I have to sing Mozart operas 🤪) there is something amazing about reconteztualizing the voice as an instrument even more so in that sense. I am ALSO so bad with names, I get where you’re coming from haha. Keep on Harumpfing!
It’s been said many times, but seeing musicians react to Tatiana never gets old. You mentioning the research with Elizabeth and Will was great. It’s awesome to see someone staying current with active research in their field.
On the record that belt in the end is doubled with growl. Live she just do the growls. On the live session they cut the growl. Now show her one take vocals from Courtney of Spiritbox and Will Ramos from Lorna Shore doing To the Hellfire. The live video were Tatiana guest on Spiritbox' Circle with Me is a banger and a must see.
Its not fully unedited and live. Hence why you can hear vocal layering (2 vocals) during some scream sections. Along with whisper vocals you hear during the slow bridge part near the end.
It puts such a smile on my face. They've been very complementary of each other for actually a decade since a video of IWABO including Courtney watching eastern European metal.
When I first started singing harsh vocals, I didn't know how to and tried a few methods that felt natural to me, but it didn't work too well. That was, (pause to realise I'm getting old) about 16 or 17 years ago I think. Back then I found a video of Angela Gossow (back then singer of Arch Enemy, I recommend you listen to their song "Dead Eyes See no future", "Nemesis" or so - you'll find live versions from the "Tyrants of the Rising Sun" tour in Japan. In the video, she was coaching people how to do harsh vocals, and her hint (which worked well for me) was imagining you get back to your car (from the shops or whatever) and you just see someone breaking into your car and driving away. The moment in which you just scream "HEY!!!" without thinking is what you should try and replicate for your singing. Although to be precise, she describes growling, which is mostly used in Death Metal and genres closely related to it. Wil Ramos (the guy from the Charismatic Voice experiment, and singer for Lorna Shore) mainly uses screams in various iterations, which is a different technique. Then there's also throat singing, and there are Black Metal Screams (or shrieks). All of them use the false cords (mainly, although the proper vocal cords can be used to add melody) but all in a different way. And if you want to be blown away by vocal range (with harsh vocals), you should look at Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth, there are a bunch of songs that are good - I'd recommend "Her ghost in the fog" because it is well-known and commonly seen as one of their best). Anyway, what I wanted to get at is, within the metal community, there have been ressources and training for how to sing harsh vocals safely. Not everybody follows these, although most singers that do it for a while find a style or technique that is sustainable and doesn't do lasting damage. Some do experience some short term (a few hours, and drinking much liquid helps) straining or hoarseness in the voice though, which makes her effortless switch from harsh back to clean impressive even to people who can sing like that :D
Jinjer has been my favorite band since the first time I saw this video. I saw Jinjer live in 2019 and it was the greatest show I have ever seen. Tatiana is the most beautiful creature on this Earth.
As always, very sweet reaction. Here some fun facts - [how do you know you can do this?] Well, when she was a teen, a friend made her listen to growls (Opeth or Oteph, never remember), and after reveils her that it was a female that was doing the growls. For Tatiana, it was a crush. She wanted to do it. At first, it was nothing, but she never stop trying, shouting in her pillows, at cars on the streets.. and after years, her growls and screem evolve to what it is now, and still changing. - [She never follows vocal course] Only exception, one course when she was 8 years old. Also, she never practice prior to a show, record studio, etc. Her only trick : she sing all day long, every kind of music. - [The belt in Pisces was not in the live performance] As you said, she alternate between styles (clean and harsh; she called it extreme vocals), but not for this special belt in Pisces. In the studio album, they mixed the two styles together, so she simply choose to continue with the harsh vocals. But there is another reason. She said she is afraid to do it, that it can mess her vocals chords. So, even her has some limits. But if you are curious to listen to her most extrem live performance, and of course if you did not already react to it, try "Pit of conciousness live at kiev". By the way, I still wait to "The charismatic voice" to react to it. She even did a great interview with Tatiana (Tea and Coffee interview), but still never react to her most extreme performance. So if you are in link with her, give her this tip. - [They are touring non stop] I saw them live last year, at Montreal, and they were here just weeks ago, and there is a reason for this. As you know, there is a war in Ukraine.. and young men have to fight. When the war start, the band members was in Ukraine (probably Tatiana in California then). So, they should have to fight, right? Well, the governement stated the band is an ambasador of the country and allow them to tour, else then fight. So.. they have to tour. There are possibly nuances to add to what I wrote, but it was my understanding at the time, because I was affraid they died at war. And I can tell you they give a hell of a show. I wasn't sure what to expected because in the earlier years of the band, she was jumping everywhere, but was much calmer before the pandemic, mostly walking (the Australian show at Melbourn I think). The voice was there, but less show and she told she was tired of jumping everywhere. So when I saw them, and the first part band was really good, I was a bit affraid they do not do better. I was so wrong. The band, but mostly Tatiana, was just fantastic. She has just such a stage presence, and of course the voice!
This is awesome. The universals you can distill are: persistence, passion, obsession, and trust yourself (you are your own best teacher). This is a story that’s similar to all once in a lifetime singers from all styles. Truly inspiring. Such an amazing talented artist.
The band keeps touring not because they have to do it. They can stop it any day. But Jinjer just always keeps touring non-stop all their lifetime. Except the covid period of course. But even that time they used any chance to make some live concert (even without the crowd).
You should watch the one-take performance of "Judgment and Punishment" if you really want to see how Tatiana uses her entire body to support her singing.
Great stuff, Charlie! It was really interesting to watch Andrea's reaction compared to your prior knowledge of what Tatiana can do as explanation and nevertheless astonished admiration.
Thanks Jonathan, as always your encouragement is really appreciated :) I showed her a few different styles of music that I love on this channel. Always awesome hearing the “sheltered from UA-cam trends” perspective from my colleagues 😄
In this song Tatiana almost never does live the "sun beam" belt. If you want a good live combination of screams and belting try "On The Top" (official live).
Jinjer's Pisces was a total shock for me - when I got to HER growl/scream part, I legitimately did a triple take. I was nonplussed at first and quickly devolved into utter confusion because the noises weren't matching the beautiful, tiny, adorable young woman XD I quickly adjusted but, goodness gracious, was I in limbo for ten seconds or so ;D It was MARVELOUS!
Hey, did you see that there was a followup video with Will Ramos and TheCharismaticVoice where they revisit the vocal research group for further testing beyond the laryngoscopy? Great stuff. AND, upcoming, Elizabeth (TheCharismaticVoice) will be bringing other extreme vocalists in, _including Tatiana!_
Great reaction. I would follow up and reaction to "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019 and Tatiana's collaboration with Spiritbox - Circle With Me Live from Louder Than Life 2024. Well done. (Subbed)
It‘s always so nice to come back to this song and just dive in again and enjoy the *space*, it‘s just such a fantastic musical composition, regardless of the - admittedly out of this world - vocals.
Tatiana doesn't sing the high belt live. She growls only. The album version has the belt and growl blended. I've seen them live a couple of times thus far at medium sized Austin Texas clubs. Amazing live band! Cheers y'all.
She's said in interviews she's afraid of messing up the transition to belting from growling live. The songs where she does it like Vortex and Judgement & Punishment she has about a second longer to switch.
for someone like me who really likes to understand things - it makes it MUCH more impressive hearing you talk about how she controls her throat vs my previous impression that someone is just screaming in tone. Knowing all the different parts of the throat that must be consciously controlled makes it incredibly interesting for me.
Teacher Teacher is one she does "the switch" back and forth, once quite quickly, but it is a split performance of the song. But she will get what she wants there because it is 2 live performances! Loved this Charlie! And Floor's intro! Thank you!!!!! Blessings from Bama!
Someone might have already commented something similar to this but she's using false cord vocals for the lower screams and then when she goes what sounds like a higher pitch she is using vocal fry for the most part. Tati is a beast! She has a very angelic singing voice but is as brutal as any of the male death vocalists.
Goddamn, Tatiana's voice always give me goosebumps. It's so damn beautiful. Pisces is that song that give me a wave of calm, and it stays through the whole song. I love it.
I studied with Tibetan Monks whose prayers and chants are done using the same vocal folds. Im no singer- probably couldnt be much of one after serving in the Marine Corps and blowing out my voice....But I learned how to fully engage my vocal folds to where I can make that sound just about as low as Ive ever heard a human go with complete comfort and no damage done. Ive also managed to bring overtones at the same time. Im not sure what those count as, but I make them by using the sinus cavity- including the nose. I dont sing, I just do it for fun. My favorite place to practice is in this huge stone shower I built that has amazing resonance- it amplifies the sound through the whole house...My wife is awesome, she doesnt mind and gets a kick out of it- shes even told me it sounded really good a few times.
I just listened to another reactor on this very performance. I’ve been doing this for decades, chanting Sutras, it’s quite easy and pleasant to do if you do it correctly, without hurting yourself. But, like I say, have been “growling “, for many years chanting. Can switch back and forth quite easily also. Love the conversation, new subscriber.
What i love about this live session is that there is minimal "stage presence" movement, so you get a better visual of the full body physicality of the vocals themselves.
This song never gets old and watching the reaction is priceless. I'm glad someone else loves Tati's surprise belt after her growl onset. Love the way she tosses it off! Too bad she doesn't do the same in her live performances. It adds the perfect touch to this outstanding performance.
I have seen Jinjer 4 times live and they are incredible. This last time, I was able to meet the band at a show last month in San Antonio. They are such nice people. Tati is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in real life, like breathtaking. Love this band!
I first heard Jinjer before the pandemic, and this is the video I show people, or tell them to watch, when introducing the band to them. My wife and I attended a live interview with the band at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. We sat in the front row of the Clive Davis Theater, about 10 to 15 feet from the stage area they were seated on. It was very interesting to hear how they started back in the Ukraine, and how they have made it to where they are now.
Honestly, the whole band transforms. It’s such a good studio performance. They are eyes closed and swaying then all of a sudden the fingers are FLYING on those frets. lol. And the drummer? 🤌🏻 This is why they’re one of my favorite bands. 🖤
16:20 She never does the belching live, ´cause the fry scream is less taxing on her voice when touring and singing live. You can see it in the studio session, that she works a lot harder when belting, than when she´s screaming.
@@CharlieCalottaReactsalso the songs where she does the transition from growls to belting there's about an extra second for her to shift gears. I'd especially recommend the song On The Top live in Kiev (now Kyiv) for live belting with top quality recording. I Speak Astronomy is great too but there's no definitive recording of it, and since it was written as a :call to the universe" for a soulmate when Tati was lonely and searching it's lost a bit of it's edge since she found her husband - the Resurrection fest 2018 recording is the one I'd recommend. Captain Clock from the same show is great too. Their whole set was released.

Guys, if you want advanced screaming go to the master himself, Devin Townsend and see the live performance in Royal Albert Hall, London. "DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT - Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall)"
Tatiana is absolutely stunning with her performance and ability to switch between the two voices, and I personally think she definitely deserves the title of our national treasure, but... This ability is not unique, moreover, there were (and still are) women who can do it just as well or maybe even better. For example, former (Angela Gossow) and current (Alyssa White-Gluz) vocalists of Arch Enemy can do the same no problem. Granted, none of them has the same charming natural voice but ability to switch is just as good if not better, and growling voice is superb. But there's something about Jinjer and Tatiana personally that Arch Enemy can't compete with (and frankly no one else can in my opinion), something that unfortunately usually gets overlooked by most people reacting or even critically listening to Jinjer. Something that really is unique and deserving highest of praises. I'm talking about Tatiana's composer's talent. Most of Jinjer songs are so musically complex, include so many genres, experimentations, tempo, key and time signature shifts that the musical material of a single Jinjer song would be enough for other bands to create 3 or 4 songs. It's a shame so few people can recognize their true value.
9:36 There's an old tv movie about Houdini, stars Paul Michael( "Starsky" od Starsky and Hutch) Glaser. Barbara Rhodes is in this playing a "medium" and she talks all nice and womanly until she "trances out", then growls like a beast. That sound was edited into the film. Tatiana does this in real life.
Jinjer's live shows are absolutely phenomenal. She just _demands_ attention on a stage, it's incredible. Every single band member has earned their keep too, they're all amazing. Vlad, the drummer, is actually a classically trained pianist and only learned drums so he could fill in for his last band!
For those who love the verse especially, check out Tapping the Vein (look for "Butterfly" to find the correct Tapping the Vein). Same sound, but instead of descending into lower range metal growl, she keeps the same vibe for chorus screams. Not to take away from the brilliance of Jinjer.
Your spot on on your observations of the technique to sing like that. The one piece you're missing is the use of the proximity effect to cup the mic enhancing bass response & harmonic distortion. This also allows for low volume "screams" but using the proximity effect to add harmonic distortion, girth & weight to the voice making it sound MUCH bigger & louder. THIS, along with learning very good technique & mic control is what makes it sustainable. She isn't screaming at the top of her lungs. It's a LOT more controlled than that. You can see she cups the mic demonstrating what I'm saying. Chino from the Deftones is a GREAT example of this as he does it constantly as well. Just a lil extra bit of info I thought might help those trying to use this technique so they don't destroy their voices trying to mimic this by trying to belt "growls" in full chest or head voice.
Andrea's reward for being the canary to Charlie's cat should be watching him lose his sh*t in his initial reaction videos...

@@CharlieCalottaReacts They were one of the opening acts for the day, and their set was cut short because they were having audio issues for that stage. I've heard they were still working on them till near the end of their set when they played Perennial as the impromptu finale, and the audio is more consistent for that song.
Please please do more! Tati recently just joined Spiritbox for their song “Circle With Me” from Louder Than Life. I think you would both really appreciate seeing the queens of metal on stage together 🙏
Watching others first time just reminds me of my first time…
It’s also nice seeing technical skilled singers evaluate emotional singing techniques that require the person to put their all into the moment.
Thank you for looking up a live version as well in one video, usually we have to wait weeks for a second live reaction.
Seeing her live right after the studio session really seals the deal.
Hah! Welcome ❤ Charlie you are an absolute fiend for that pause/setup. The side eye could be a meme 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Yo, I've been around enough of y'all to know what people wanna see hahahahaha, but for real that was really just my own greedy moment
its live with backing track. there are vocal overdubs on that backing track , you can hear them really obviously in the 2nd pre chorus, where there's clearly 2 or more vocals singing. And also the added whispering in the break. The sound is all real though it's just triple / quad tracked for extra thickness
He shows real live in the end. I honestly was kinda impressed myself when I saw her live being even better cuz many extreme vocalists suck live tbh.
I always enjoy reactions to this one, thank you
I loved your little explanation and reference to the charismatic voice.
I will see them again next month, i cant wait 😂
Have fun!
Its not fully unedited and live. Hence why you can hear vocal layering (2 vocals) during some scream sections. Along with whisper vocals you hear during the slow bridge part near the end.
I'm curious which layer is the live vs the playback
you gotta show her the new live spiritbox video with Tatiana singing circle with me.its even better than the original
Once I’ve seen that 🤣
Yes, it is sooooooo good!!
@@CharlieCalottaReacts only this. Unreal.
It puts such a smile on my face. They've been very complementary of each other for actually a decade since a video of IWABO including Courtney watching eastern European metal.
This!🤘🏻
When I first started singing harsh vocals, I didn't know how to and tried a few methods that felt natural to me, but it didn't work too well.
Here some fun facts
- [how do you know you can do this?]
Well, when she was a teen, a friend made her listen to growls (Opeth or Oteph, never remember), and after reveils her that it was a female that was doing the growls. For Tatiana, it was a crush. She wanted to do it. At first, it was nothing, but she never stop trying, shouting in her pillows, at cars on the streets.. and after years, her growls and screem evolve to what it is now, and still changing.
- [She never follows vocal course]
Only exception, one course when she was 8 years old. Also, she never practice prior to a show, record studio, etc. Her only trick : she sing all day long, every kind of music.
- [The belt in Pisces was not in the live performance]
As you said, she alternate between styles (clean and harsh; she called it extreme vocals), but not for this special belt in Pisces.
- [They are touring non stop]
I saw them live last year, at Montreal, and they were here just weeks ago, and there is a reason for this.
Otep.
Love this!! Jinjer are one of my favs, mostly because of the vocals but also how versatile the band are with their sound.
Great reaction! Big Love
You should watch the one-take performance of "Judgment and Punishment" if you really want to see how Tatiana uses her entire body to support her singing.
He even clued you in that it was ''heavy, death metal'' and you still weren't expecting it! lol.
That reaction never gets old.
Which isn’t even the right genre lol
@@CharlieCalottaReacts I know, but it should have been a clue for the coming sound, lol.
Always awesome hearing the “sheltered from UA-cam trends” perspective from my colleagues 😄
finally got to see them live last summer, they did not disappoint at all
I love being reminded of this performance! It has been a couple of years and never fails to impress
Elizibeth from "The Charismatic Voice" did a tea time with Tatiana and talked abount how she learned that she could sing like that.
I am so glad I found your channel, Charlie - this was fascinating! Thanks for bringing your expert friends along for the ride :)
In this song Tatiana almost never does live the "sun beam" belt.
If you want a good live combination of screams and belting try "On The Top" (official live).
I love that description. It’s totally accurate “sun beam” that’s perfect. Thanks, this’ll be great.
Right i still cant wrap my brain around it
Hey, did you see that there was a followup video with Will Ramos and TheCharismaticVoice where they revisit the vocal research group for further testing beyond the laryngoscopy? Great stuff. AND, upcoming, Elizabeth (TheCharismaticVoice) will be bringing other extreme vocalists in, _including Tatiana!_
Yeah! It’s an awesome video. I’m so happy about that project
Elizabeth also did an interview with Tatiana. Worth the watch
See some of the earlier *JINJER* songs / performances.
_"Outlander"_ (Live 2014)
_"No Hoard of Value"_ (Lyric Video)
Tatiana doesn't sing the high belt live. She growls only. The album version has the belt and growl blended. I've seen them live a couple of times thus far at medium sized Austin Texas clubs. Amazing live band! Cheers y'all.
She's said in interviews she's afraid of messing up the transition to belting from growling live. The songs where she does it like Vortex and Judgement & Punishment she has about a second longer to switch.
Outstanding! You are quickly becoming one of my favorite reactors. Keep spreading the love!!!
for someone like me who really likes to understand things - it makes it MUCH more impressive hearing you talk about how she controls her throat vs my previous impression that someone is just screaming in tone. Knowing all the different parts of the throat that must be consciously controlled makes it incredibly interesting for me.
Have her watch Judgement & Punishment one take vocal then Perennial live at Wacken.
Glad to see you guys have good taste in headphones. KPH40s are my favorite on the go headphones and sound so good!
Teacher Teacher is one she does "the switch" back and forth, once quite quickly, but it is a split performance of the song. But she will get what she wants there because it is 2 live performances! Loved this Charlie! And Floor's intro! Thank you!!!!! Blessings from Bama!
Opera Singer is gorgeous
Dude your life is awesome.
8:11 Shoutout to Elizabeth!🙌
Never heard this band before and I must say that I’m most impressed by the drummer. He’s got more talent than most musicians
ayyy! Love the shoutout to The Charismatic Voice! She has put a lot of effort in understanding harsh vocals!
I have seen Jinjer 4 times live and they are incredible. This last time, I was able to meet the band at a show last month in San Antonio. They are such nice people. Tati is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in real life, like breathtaking. Love this band!
Teacher teacher - jinjer will blow your mind
Yeah that is my personal fav.....
My fav.
Artist: Arch Enemy song: The eagle flies alone.
A double reaction? Hell yeah, I'm here for it
Charlie, you meanie!
Watching you, getting ready for the shock.
Tati! 🟨🟦, such a sweet voice, followed by the growl.
Then the sudden switch back!
Honestly, the whole band transforms. It’s such a good studio performance. They are eyes closed and swaying then all of a sudden the fingers are FLYING on those frets. lol. And the drummer? 🤌🏻 This is why they’re one of my favorite bands. 🖤
Charlie, we need more reactions from Andrea. She is great.
16:20 She never does the belching live, ´cause the fry scream is less taxing on her voice when touring and singing live. You can see it in the studio session, that she works a lot harder when belting, than when she´s screaming.
Belching is burping😅 Belting is the word you’re looking for:)
@@ega7072 lol! Yup! 😂🤣😂 (edited)
lol him looking at her in anticipation was all of us when we intro this song to friends. Tatiana is unbelievable.
He says just this year but I recall someone talking about this type of singing maybe 5 years ago. Still mind boggling
Spiritbox and Tatiana did a live performance recently together both female lead in metal bands.
Tati doesnt do the E5 clean live. She saves it for the higher notes she does.
That makes sense. It’s like choosing optional high notes in opera. You save it for the best ones you got live. She’s epic
@@j.f.fisher5318 I love Vortex live. In the section where she sings "Like a feather I travel down" then screams "the spiral staircase," she switches back and forth with barely a breath in between. I love the Audiotree - From Nothing version.
I have a live version of this song from a meet and greet. Identical to this. Bucket list moment. 4 great people!
What impressed me most is not that she can scream super well, but she has so much CONTROL when doing so
What I love about Tati is when she growls, you can understand what she's saying. If she wants to experience more of the band and Tati, Pernnial live from Wacken, WHo's gonna be the one live, teacher teacher, judgement (&punishment) one take vocal performance
I like that you switched to live. That was a cool transition.
The Charismatic Voice has a Go Fund Me going to fund the same study on multiple harsh vocalists, Tatiana included.
Yes! Super awesome project

"DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT - Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall)"
Just saw Jinjer live last month. She's incredible
Seen jinjer live twice and yeah. Can confirm. It’s real. Best metal band out there right now. Love watching opera singers react to this❤
Honestly the most impressive thing about this song is that the "drummer" is a pianist that taught himself to play drums
omg I haven't seen that live performance. Holy crap her range is insane!
Loved the reaction, beautiful
This never gets old : ) This is one of the most beautiful and edgiest songs I've ever heard.
Jinjer's live shows are absolutely phenomenal. She just _demands_ attention on a stage, it's incredible. Every single band member has earned their keep too, they're all amazing.
Vlad, the drummer, is actually a classically trained pianist and only learned drums so he could fill in for his last band!
You mentioned Will Ramos. He was inspired by Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. One of THE OGs and still pushing the envelope of his craft.
thats so much for putting her in my world
When my friend in Denmark recommended I watch Pisces for the first time…I don’t often listen to heavy metal but I love Jinjer.
Perennial live is a pure example of what she can do live. Knowing how exhausted she is before the start it's damn impressive!
For those who love the verse especially, check out Tapping the Vein (look for "Butterfly" to find the correct Tapping the Vein). Same sound, but instead of descending into lower range metal growl, she keeps the same vibe for chorus screams.
Not to take away from the brilliance of Jinjer.
Keep Andrea around, it will have a positive impact on your YT channel 👍👍👍
came for the laugh, stayed for the great conversation
