This lack of sunshine issue is wild. Moved to NL for work in May this year and everywhere was sunny and great, November strolled along and boy o boy I begged for sunshine. For me this is compounded by the fact that I grew up in Sokoto, Nigeria for 25years with all year round sunshine. I never expected it to be honest.

I don't live in the diaspora but travel there often for work over years. I've seen how people live and it's heartbreaking.
Early days I'd tell family and friends hey I'm going to be in this xx city UK, US, etc. They'll avoid your calls thinking you need to squat. Until you say I'm at this hotel, then they communicate with you.
No beef, I get the complexities.
What saddens me most is I have tried to share opportunities here in Africa with some people and they've cursed me out.
Yet people with those jobs here in Africa are living much better.
A household income of $1500- $2000/month in Africa will likely give a much better quality of life than $4000/month in the diaspora. But people compare the $$ amount, not the quality of life.
They told me I was jealous that they were in the diaspora. Or I wanted them to come back to Africa to be below me in class, since they're "higher class" as the "overseas dwellers ".
Same people who ask a 3rd world dweller to leave them some dollars or add their shopping to my own and pay!
We are irredeemably brainwashed!!!! And we will continue to pay the price with our souls. #CryAfrica

After I got to the West, I realized I had better work hard for a few years (less than 10years) save money build a lot for myself and family and move back to Nigeria. Living in the West is a high risk environment that comes with a huge financial stress. You must not lose your job. If you do, and you don't get a good job back quickly, you will lose everything even with government support which is designed just to keep you alive. I have seen it all. But my problem is why it is so difficult for people to go back home when things are not going as planned rather than being in perpetual depressing state.
Save money, be disciplined and build wealth in African with your savings. Ire o!

A cousin of mine, my younger brother’s son got admission to a private University here in the US, and he wants me to pay almost $50k for the tuition! His father couldn’t even pay for his ticket! We didn’t send our kids to private College, but he wants to come for his Masters in private College. We said no, and the emotional black mailing started in full force in our family back home. My sister has been a psychiatric nurse for 25 years and once told me that depression is a mental health condition of the affluent. Eating disorders and body dysmorphia are also mental disorders of the affluent. There are many journal articles out there talking about this.
Apparently, we need struggle in our lives its a natural part of the human condition (our ancestors, yours and mine, already knew this stuff by the way). It's a bit like caging wild animals in a zoo where they are hand fed and no struggle for survival. Just comfort. The poor creatures go mad. Western lifestyle is similar. No purpose in life. No gratitude. No struggle. No belief in something greater than their individualistic selves. No value in complex social connections and spiritual well-being. Nothing but material comfort and enjoyment. But sooner or later all that loses it gloss. After all, how can you know you're happy if you've never experienced suffering?
And to top it all off, your culture shock, homesickness, your body adjusting to the unfamiliar, and no meaningful connections and relationships, and racism damages the psyche. Israel Adesanya UFC fighter once said he didn't know he was black until he arrived in New Zealand that's where he met racism, he was bullied, and he became a world class fighter. Not saying you should go around beating people up, of course.
I was born in New Zealand, and am indigenous to here. We see the western ways the new Zealanders live, and that just makes us even more determined to hold fast to our culture and the teachings of our ancestors because those are the things that kept us safe from the colonisers 🇬🇧 on all fronts, physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, socially, for the past 150 years.
Living in New Zealand I have access to robust western institutions and material wealth. I live in two worlds the indigenous and the west, and I compare and contrast the two. My point is the western world has its merits, but it ain't everything.
I see nigeria and her markets and so much social connection everywhere. Noise, vibe, beauty, colour, and not so nice but ever-present, struggle. I simply want to point out that in comparison, western shopping malls are boring and flavorless like their entire society. Thats why they complain about being unhappy all the time. And if you dont believe me, go see what books have been best sellers for the past several decades. These people are just too damn comfortable. They can't even buy deep meaningful social connections with all their money yet they crave it so badly, so they buy antidepressants instead. When all they need is a good dose of struggle, im talking about real struggle. Going without morning coffee, does not count as real struggle.
Holdfast to your ancestors and who you are and nurture your spiritual self, it will prevent you from going crazy.

Your write-up is insightful. I'm a Nigerian who lives in the south Pacific as well and I see how much they'd rather hold on to their cultural practices...even though a lot want to live westernised life so bad. Very well articulated. I relate to Israel first feeling black when he moved to New Zealand. That's how I felt when I moved to Canada! I agree with everything you've said because I've lived and felt this way. Once I finished school and left the international students community, I basically became alone. Meditating, going to church, zumba class and a few social events with friends a few times month help to keep from going mad. Otherwise, its a dark world without color. Your comment has made me realize that I need to start Journaling. Thank you

The reality of Africans within western societies is sometimes synonymous to a child living in an amusement park. The novelty of fun burns out too fast and the crave for the feel of home sets in.

Thanks for sharing Phrankleen. The psychological warfare in the UK is crazy. The effects of the gaslighting, gossiping, betrayal, microaggression cannot be underestimated. As a PhD student, I recall one of my supervisors telling me "We don't know what you are doing here". This was her response to my complaint that I came to the department over the weekend and my swipe card could not open the doors. She had requested for my swipe card to be deactivated without my knowledge. She did everything to get rid of me and she almost succeeded. I thought I was alone, my self esteem/confidence went to 0 and even -ve. Thank God for my husband, church community and lawyer who helped me fight to get myself back and get back on track, finally complete my studies. I thought I was alone until a chance conversation with my Mexican colleague. Then I realised she was also mistreating her, infact her covert aggression led to so much panic attack and anxiety, my colleague was placed on medication by her GP to cope with life. Thank God my colleague graduated at the end.
Thanks for reminding me not to look down at my other black brothers and sisters who are struggling in the places I have overcome. It is so easy to forget and think that they are not serious or they are lazy. I'll look out for my mental health and those around me. Thanks once again for this video. It touched a raw nerve.

Also remember that the Depression that people suffer in later life is a predisposition from childhood trauma, family violence, parent abandonment from polygamy, the ill treatment of a woman or girl child, under valueuing and being unappreciated, growing up in homes where parents fight, growing up being hit by other children. All these childhood traumas are Registered in the brain and failure to resolve results in patterns of failure to cope and this failure to cope increases when people are ageing and it just needs one life changing moment to trigger the dormant unresolved trauma into depressive symptoms. Mental health is not a common topic in Africans however it's there very alive. So the way to fix it is to break the cycle of abuse

Depression has bitten deep into the black society for various reasons as you’ve mentioned earlier on;from not being accepted into the society fully to be ill treated by both the white folks and black folks etc,but the most painful in this whole saga is the worst treatment being melted to diasporans by their families back home, the ill treatment that comes from our families back home kills more than any other thing infact that is the height of all,the depression that comes from that kills faster.

This is pretty much my life. I came here by myself; no family, no friends. I constantly feel lonely in the midst of a crowd. To make matters worse, I lost my mom in 2020, the lock down made it impossible to visit home. I had to mourn her in isolation, no physical contact with any friend or family. Best believe I am still grieving and so depressed. Nothing has helped to be honest cos I feel like I was robbed of the most precious gift God blessed me with all in the name of getting a PHD! I have tried therapy and it hasn’t helped. I look at pics of home just to have sweet memories. It’s truly unnatural to communicate mostly over the phone just cos the people around you can’t truly connect with you on the same level. Hmmmmmmmmmm, this is deep and most people will not understand.

Coming to racism, who do you blame? In oyibo country, they treat you with disdain. But then when they come to Nigeria, they disrespect you too in your fatherland because Nigerians elevated them to demigods. We really have to look inwards. A middle class Briton will go to Nigeria and the Police and military will literally turn to his servants. In that case, who do you blame? We mistreat one another and expect respect from foreigners. As insecure and crime-laden as South Africa could be, you do not see their Police officers and military guarding private foreign individuals.

I tell my people anytime you go into hospital or go to see your family doctor let me know so I can tell you what questions you need to ask and make sure you write things down, As for the racism, its needs a whole book written about it

I love watching your videos and in so many ways we share similar views on issues and from a few things you've stated in this video, experiences.
From having to deal with family in Nigeria with an over inflated sense of entitlement, dealing with a very ununited nigerian community in the UK and having to deal with the perceived stereotypical notions of a black man in a predominately white led society.
It's enough to wear anyone down.
I've taken a bold step over the last few years and it's simple. I will not inconvenient myself for anyone. Saying no is easier than people think.
I also feel that the issue of depression is a major issue in the African/Nigerian community where depression is dogged with shame and believe it or not, a lack of understanding of depression itself.
The weather alone can set people off (winter blues). The stress of paying bills, fines etc is a monthly battle for many. Yet we have the burden of family and friends always demanding.
I knew of a guy who helped a lady "living in the shadow" but sexually abused her knowing she could not report him to the authorities another friend found out about it and asked her to move in. 30 plus years later she's very successful, married and treats my friend like a father figure even though he's only w few years older than her.
Seems that we need to learn to love and build ourselves up like Asians and Arabs.
