The most important decision in your life is whom you choose to marry.
In the West it's a crap shoot.... Divorce laws being what they are.
That's why threw out the history on humanity the father/family chose who their children would marry.

Just came across this video and am not gonna lie I think I was born with the gift of being financially responsible.
I was raised by numerous family members Cos my mom was broke and couldn’t afford. I came to Canada at 20yrs old working hard and trying to pay my family back for the care they gave me while growing up .
I came to realize early that no amount of money I sent could satisfy them so I drastically reduced how much I sent to them ! I saved most of my pay checks and payed my bills
I made a challenge to save a certain amount every year and today 5yrs in Canada am getting my first home .
I really don’t care if they are proud of me but I am sure proud of myself. 💯

Wow! I made so many terrible financial decisions. First having children way too early and ending up being a single parent. Had to stay poor for twenty years trying to raise my children; being home for them. I did eventually completed my education earning a masters degree and actually used it to earn a decent salary. However, I am just catching up. Had to rent for years. Finally was able to purchase my own home which had almost doubled in appreciation from the time I purchased the property. I wasted a lot of money as well. I have also given away money to help others. As I approach my retirement years, I have been socking away as much as I can without feeling deprived. It’s important to save while enjoying the fruits of your labor.

My parents are both deceased and only have extended family back in Ghana who are so needy and depressing to talk to because all i hear from them is how difficult things are. Well, a person her has to work hard to have what we have in the West. We have major bills to pay and the people at home have no idea that nothing comes easy. Yes, are lives are good in Canada but nothing has been given for free. I have ceased contact with distant relatives because conversations are more paingful than it is worth. Reasons why: We learn through failure rather than education. We don't save for our stability - we save for things and events e.g. holidays back home, weddings and funerals rather than an emergency fund. Financial self-preservation is seen as selfish, unChristian etc. We are reactive not proactive. Emotion drives most if not all financial decision-making - logic is wayyyyyyy down on the list. Sandwich generation after sandwich generation (people taking care of parents and kids at the same time, no thought of improving childrens lives for the future, just emotional blackmail everywhere).

I can tell anyone this,I am now 58 and have been investing for over 30 years...the concept of pay yourself first is one of the most important things for people to grasp. When I worked the first money to come out of my wage was my investment money - everything else, bills food even sending money back home (when I did it) came out of the remainder. You cannot give to, or support others if your own cup is empty. Paying yourself first allows you to build a strong financial base which gives you the financial freedom to do other things, including helping others. Today at 58 I no longer work a 9-5 and I'm financially OK, our people do not educate themselves about these things, too much is living for the moment, never looking to the future.

Appearances on those movies( Nollywood) is All about how much money a person has. Many times I get upset and stop watching. Always a person or son returning from abroad and wearing so much gold and diamonds with label clothes and brand new car. They need to stop, and I've written to them about it. You told the truths!!!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

It's not worth supporting families back home... I have been out of my country for about 12 years... Been sending money home, taking my mom on international trips, flying my nephews out all paid by me.
I have sent so much money home, yet they can show me where the money went.... No work on the house, nothing... Now I lost my job and guess what.. It's almost been one month and not even one of my siblings have bothered to even ask me if I ate today... Oh well guess I'm no use to them anymore

I feel the same. I could have been financially better off if I had not helped my family so much. Many times I found they were lying about their needs. Even my adult children are selfish. I worked hard all my life. My kids never wanted for anything despite a husband/dad who gambled away his checks. I currently live on a small pension and disability due to health problems. My oldest son who makes good money as a truck driver no longer speaks to me because I didn t loan him $1,500! Although I supported him most if his adult life because he refused to work. Now that I finally said no he's done with me. He still bought a new car. SMH.

Favoured I am praying you get back on your feet soon. When you do, put yourself first this time and save. Truck drivers are always in demand and some companies pay for training. This may be a temporary solution. Several of my relatives drive over the road. It pays well.

@Gregory We are talking again now but he is still not being responsible. I keep silent most of the time to avoid arguments but he can't live with me. Currently staying with his dad and trying to get unemployment. His last job is requiring the vaccine but their are plenty of other jobs. He is living with his dad but I will never understand. My ex jokingly says the girls are his and the boys are mine 😆. We love them all and just want them to be alright when we are gone so tough love is in order for the young men.

I did not learn about financial until I was older. But when I did I paid my car off. I have learned what grocery stores to shop. I have always live simply. And I do not Bling it up. If black people would stop with going to Asian nail shop, getting expensive weaves, getting expensive car's designer this and X boxes , always getting the most updated I phones which runs in thousand of dollars. Every year African Americans put trillions of dollars into America and what do we get taxation with out representation and we're still being shot like dog's in the streets. If Black people stop buying all that s_ t we can bring America to it's knees. And that is our power to have control of out finances.

Many of our people are so broken and insecure by the history of colonialism and slavery they find themselves seeking confidence and acceptance through spending and flexing. We'd rather "look rich" than be rich. And its pure foolishness. We have a real trouble talking honestly about our finances. We know more about sports, entertainment trends and cars than we do stock market, business ownership, tax laws, and financial instruments. We think personal finance/accounting is "boring" even though it affects literally every aspect of our lives.
Arent we tired of being broke? Isnt suffering miserable? "But money can't buy you happiness" they say. Are you happy being broke and struggling? We need to get serious and stop fooling around.

Manhattan is their Dubai, not me. Thank you.

That was 18 years ago and I have never looked back since. Being a registered nurse in New York, I have a lot of people with some unreasonable expectations from me. I have learned to do the little I can that I know is fair but I always put myself first in all I do. I believe in pushing the people around me to grow that way we can all eat rather than have one person be the cash cow for the family.
