    My advice to Nigerians living in Diaspora
    You need to accept the truth that you are no longer Nigetian culturally, orientation wise etc. You're now the new country you've lived all these years. It's hard to relate to Nigerians after living so long abroad. Ask them. Nigerians on Nigeria even treat you as a foreigner.

    Also be careful of those stupid family members who go around to brag about their brother/ sister who lives abroad. Their stupidity has often instigated this type of attack without them knowing. Criminals get information through various means including loud mouthed braggart family members. I am speaking from experience here. Be careful of that family member that has bad friends. Criminals will get you through him.

    Nigeria is not a place to settle or go for vacation. You come back more stressed than when you left. I always say this. People spend time here telling us to go back. Go back where? How can you head to place you will be locked up behind iron gates 24/7 and only venture out with security? Nigeria is a failed state. Period. Go there at your own risk.

    • @ibexy
      @ibexy 4 роки тому +8

      @Fol A On the contrary, if you are rich, you are a target for criminals in Nigeria. Again, where is the quality of life? You have all that money and there are no good roads, noise pollution from generator and churches,etc. If you have money in Nigeria you are under the illusion that you are enjoying but you are still suffering.

Today I cant wait to sell off everything and re-invest where I live. BTW what security are you talking about? The very security men will almost always plan evil for you. All based on experience bro.

      @Fol A Can you believe on a different comment thread on this video, I am being attacked for suggesting people should get security when travelling to naija. The other person thinks its better to trust God than to get security.
      @Fol A to answer your question, Yes. ensure you are properly secured whenever you travel. It also depends on the area. Some places are relatively safer.
      Security does not necessarily mean getting big hefty people guarding you. It can mean keeping a low profile and letting trusted people be aware of your movements.
      I am not trying to scare you but its obvious that there are no laws protecting the ordinary person in Nigeria.

    This targeting returnees is also common in the caribbean. Many of our elders retired back in the 90’s onwards after working hard in the UK for 30/40 years. They sold their UK houses. Gave their kids some money from the sale to help them buy. Once back they get targeted. People do not see them as their own any more because of the years spent living abroad. Many also realised going back on holidays and returning to retire was not the same experience. I notice what the next generation of returnees have done is to return back but to a different island where people do not know them and they can live in peace in the sun. Jamaican retires will go to Grenada etc. My neighbour is
    but he and his wife are returning to the Gambia. Its safer for them, and also their family in the UK, like grandkids etc will feel safer there when visiting them. So folks Africa is a big continent, you dont must have to retire to Nigeria to reap the benefits of the African continent. Travel around the continent whilst you are in your best years and then decide, which country will best for you and those relatives who will visit you in your retirement home 🙏🏽

Of course there is dysfunctional people everywhere but we still have live and live in the place that will best mitigate against risks. Be wise because what you need to live in your middle and older years can never be the same as when you were living in and left your home country in your 20/30’s.

I meet this baba sometime 6 months ago 2019 in Brooklyn NYC at a place called Governor where Nigerians of Yoruba extraction and some igbo brothers always meet to unwind. Its so sad that Nigeria our people back home in Nigeria always wish us bad. Why would anyone kill an old man for heaven sake? Am a young man in my late 30s and its because of the evil of our people to run away from home. These evil people arr the ones that will always tell you to retire back home but its now clear its so that they can kill you.

  • @sonias1love
    @sonias1love 4 роки тому +22

    This is so sad. In Jamaica over the past few years there has been a rash of murders of retirees returning home to live out their remaining years in the land of their birthplace. Unfortunately too, many of them have spent 20, 30, 40 years working abroad (UK, USA Canada) saving their money ir send their money back to JA to build their dream home to reside in. The unfortunate part is in their absence the community has changed not necessarily for the better. You see when they return home, they face a younger community people who know nothing about them other than the returnees lived abroad for many many years. And the mindset is "oh, they live abroad so long, they build house to come and retire in..." that statement alone means they assume you return with loads,if money which in most cases the returnee do have a nice amount saved and when converted to JA$ its like hitting the jackpot. So when the returnees arrive, everybody happy to see them, laugh and smile with them. But unbeknownst these elderly people are either scammed out if their money, beat up and robbed or even worse killed and burned in their own home. And those that kill them are NOT only strangers.... it's their own family too. We live in some serious times when you cant trust your own people☹☹☹

    I consider myself a proud Nigerian. However, I am realistic- I have been out of the country working and scraping for 26 years and do not pretend to be an expert about what is on the ground in Nigeria. Healthcare in my declining years?? How will I sustain myself? Why would I retire to a place where I do not feel safe? The few times I have visited I have had to be hyper-aware of my surroundings. I also did not visit family members (at their request) so what was the use? I travel to other countries- it costs me less, I have a good time, I feel relatively safe and I DO NOT NEED A VISA (those of you in the US that have ever applied for a visa or passport renewal know what I am talking about), and more importantly no one asks me silly questions at the airport. I have not finished paying off my house here so why would I build one I will not live in? So, those of you that keep telling me to "come back home" I am already home.

I retired back to Nigeria almost a year ago now after spending 33 continuous years in the USA. There are many of us here that came back from the USA either permanently like me or splitting time. There's no issue in Nigeria that can not be mitigated, mostly. We have adequate hospitals/clinics here in Nigeria. Safety is relative. Not the exact same situation but a Congolese man living in Ireland, was poisoned by his own mum and brother, when he visited them and announced that he was marrying his long term partner who was living in Congo. The thought of this woman living in the house he owned was too much for them and they killed him. Mind you this was a man of 50+ years who I personally saw cleaning toilets and cutting hair for €5 to make money while waiting for his asylum case to be processed. He died a prolonged death because of greed.

      @@oshunyt Unfortunately yes. People from the Congolese community here were collecting money to bring him back to Ireland for medical treatment before the cause of his illness was known. Even the man wasn't aware at the beginning of what was happening, he finally died in Congo but not before he managed to tell people the truth. It's beyond comprehension how someone can do that to anyone talk less of their close relative. I'm assuming he was sending money home too because he worked hard, seriously.

And they use the poor people to carry out their devious plans. The fact that they burnt him was to destroy evidence which can lead back to them. That kindness you mention has also put some of us in problem. Because you stretch out your hand to help they think you have a lot. They don't know it's sacrifice.

    I was saddened to read this incident. It's such a great loss to the family and to those of us who moved back to Nigeria in terms of encouraging others to follow suit, it's a setback. Now, this is not a rampant type of crime. Based on my research and information from other sources, this was not an armed robbery but a targeted execution or reprisal for a perceived comeuppance. Armed robbers don't burn victims vehicles that they can sell or part out. Whatever it was shouldn't have escalated to this level.
    Some quick bits of advice based on some of the knee jerk reactionary comments I read. Nigeria is not completely in dire straits as postured on here. We are not dodging bullets around or cowering from robbers while pissing ourselves. Life goes on. Businesses and creativity happens, I am most proud of the youths who are making things happen in technology in this country. A lot of American franchises are here from technology, entertainment and hospitality. Living in Nigeria requires awareness just as when I lived in Los Angeles.
    As to investments, it makes no sense to invest in Nigeria and then turn around to want to convert the money to US dollars, makes no sense. Many people have hundreds of millions in real estate investment from diaspora in Nigeria. You keep the investments in Nigeria to help the Nigeria economy. It's not for everyone. Some choose to invest where they live in the USA or wherever but that doesn't mean that investing in Nigeria is bad. There's such a housing shortfall Nigeria, at least in major cities that tenants will line up as soon as you start building.
    Good luck to all of us and may our favors and protection find us wherever we are.

Be it journalism, radio, vlogging etc they are at the forefront of influencing the masses on the struggle people face here and how hard is it to work and safe and resettle. To change that entitled mindset of most of the people. Instead they add unto it by showing their flashy cars and exotic vacations and designer purchases. Increasing the envy and cut throat mindset of the fellow ignorant people. SAD it's time for people to use their platforms to change this mindsets mehn. People are mental out there.

    I understand that we cannot succeed without caring for each other. We are already in a world that does not respect and values black people.
    What kind of world do we want to live in as black people?
    I dream of African leaders and adults that will be mindful of each other so that they, we together, will create opportunities for each other to have the necessary materially and a conscience that is balanced to live life that is dignified for us as black people.

The Old boy was arranging to help the boy learn a trade/fund a small business to help the boy support his ageing mother. The 94 year old was held in captivity four a week urinated on and beaten to extract money out of his family. Luckily, his politically connected relatives and my wife used their local MP to pressure the police to track down the kidnappers via this young man’s phone.
    During the kidnap episode the young man ran errands for my wife’s mum, thus enabling him to keep his accomplices informed. The old boy still has eye problems till today from being blind folded for a week, with no access to his high blood pressure tablets.
