When i was in Nigeria, I had the privilege of working in the pension industry, its crazy that there are loads and loads of money that cannot be claimed becos the man chose to exclude his wife as the next of kin. Next of kin is dead (parents), and money is hanging while family suffers.
This is why it's important to get hobbies and have a life. If you don't do this then all you will want to do is meddle in your children's lives. When I refuse my mother attacks me spiritually that I literally gets it in my dreams. Meanwhile I am the least trained and the one who have invested the most of my money into the family; building a family house , a different building as boys quarters and kitchen line, snuck water borehole, fenced the large family compound and still I am the last born, even bought a car for my elder brother, assisted my sisters. I started addressing these issues when my parents started treating my children, their grandchildren with disdain for questioning things and calling them disrespectful or spoilt. My father is extremely toxic/narcissistic and has never in his life apologised for anything he does, his go to for punishmentis to ignore you. I have since cut him off and I am happy. Also when it came to money, there was never enough you could give him and to make matters worse he wasn't even grateful. Yes disconnect!! Phrankleen, you speak serious FACTS!!

Thank you. I am in my mid-thirties, first child. As a kid i always challenged things that didn't make sense to me. I was beaten, caned, even horse-whippped (koboko) because i always did what i wanted at times and not what i was told to do.
My parents knew not to mess with me and whenever they tried to spill that first child role model bla bla bla .... they know i just do whatever i wanted.
As a older teenager and later as a young adult i had serious verbal disagreements with my dad that my mom had to step in. It was never physical and insulting(not that type of person). Just difference of opinions that got heated. Sometimes i could tell my mom knew i was right but she could never side with me because of so called culture that an adult is never wrong. She would ask me to later go apologize that i was wrong because of yoruba culture.
Growing up I would cut off contact even with close family members who try to forcefully impose their ideas/wills on me.
The key thing is to know what you want, be focused and be financially independent.
It takes a lot of courage to start addressing issues the way the should be in our community.

I do not know about other parts of the world, but in Africa, children are viewed as retirement/pension funds by parents, that is why they have as many children as possible, to increase the money they will receive. This have the affect of the children not getting a decent life, poor nutrition,education etc, resources gets stretch to thin because of too many children.

It is a very dangerous and needs to be stopped. My mother was the least favourite out of my grandmother 7 children, as I later found out that she had some kinda of mental health. So I suffered a lot cause of this as her only child. I was raised by gran & aunties who physically, verbally & emotionally abused me as a child. Used to wish death upon myself growing up cause the abuse was so much. I was more like a house girl almond the other grandchildren. Even after I left that environment, it still affected me and even now that I’m older and married with kids. So because of this, I’m over protective of my kids. I guide them with my life. The issue is some people talk too much , I heard a friend telling his father he makes 150quids a day. When he hung up, I told him bro u didn’t tell him 20 percent is going to tax, u didn’t tell him how much goes to bills and childcare, and stuffs, he’s literally deceiving himself. And when they come billing u and u can’t do nothing , u start having issues with them.

I'm old enough to be a grandparent technically without anyone having underage kids but my parents still wanted to be telling me what to think and who I and even my partner! can associate with! 😲. Worse still most of my siblings, extended family and family friends find nothing wrong with it and I'm the bad guy! 😮 Practically every traditional saying you've mentioned, I've had used against me - elders don't lie.. bla bla. The dangerous thing is if u r not brave enough to take a stand, it can seriously affect yr mental health so I'm glad we're finally talking about it so ppl can start breaking the shackles and start being adults. And know that it's not wrong. I know a lot of ppl that know how to release their children when they grow up and let them make their own decisions (my grandparents even, funny enough) cos it really shouldn't be something to fight for but when these adults whose parents are 'cool' hear of your situation, they can't get their heads around it and end up parroting the same traditional nonsense, thinking you are the one bring rude and difficult.
Went to visit my family and got to witness jealousy and contempt in the eyes & actions of a younger cousin (who plays in dark majik) whom was once close to me, always calling for advice, then all of a sudden things turned smh!
