Yes they sold a lot of records but never quite as many as they probably should have. And I say this as a fan of the Cult since their debut with Dreamtime.

Thank you for the reaction!!
The lead singer is Ian Astbury. This song is from the album LOVE (1985). This whole album is nothing short of sensational! Try "Nirvana", "Rain", Or " Revolution" from the same album. You won't be disappointed. ☮☮☮

I just discovered Ian and The Cult a couple months ago and I’ve been a music fanatic for over 60 years. I started at age 5 listening to the Beatles and the Monkeys. He is so underrated because I could watch him sing for days on end. I’m seeing them here in Coachella Valley Oct 21st! I like you guys - Will 🙏🏻☮️🎶🎤🎵
The Cult "Love" will become one of your favorite albums of time. It's Mind Blowing. Rain, Revolution, Brother wolf-Sister moon. Actually all the songs on this Album will have you wondering how is it that you've never known how Awesome this group is.
The CULT IS AMAZING!! 🎼💃💃💃💃💃💃🌞🌞🌞🌞 Every time I ever saw them!- and I usually loose my voice for a couple of days! As I appreciate a band that will BRING IT EVERYTIME!! Back in my dance club days. This song was always on my request list... Dance floor would be empty, in long line for a drink...dc, I'm a start the dancing on da floor by myself even!!! Wooohoooo ❤❤❤❤❤🌞🌞🌞🐦🐦🐦
The Cult is one of my top favorite rock bands. I've seen them live once in 2006. They all still entertained as well as when they first came out in the 80's. Ian's voice was still spot on. They sounded incredible live. They ended the show with this song.
I enjoyed "The Cult" in my 80s & 90s years ... what a huge, and at same time, underrated rock & roll band: Ian Astbury (lead singer), Billy Duffy (guitarrist), Nigel Preston/Les Warner (drummers) and Jamie Stewart (bass), there in middle and late 80s. I really appreciate its amazing songs: "she sells sanctuary", "fire woman", "rise", "love removal machine", "wild flower", "sweet soul sister" and more !!!. Greetings from Mexico !!!.
When I was a senior in Highschool in 89 I went to see the Metallica "And Justice For All" Tour with the opening band that none of us had heard "the Cult" Apparently, they were a British Act that had been around for 6 years already. She Sells Sanctuary was from 1985 when the band had far more of the 1980s sort of New Wave kind of look. In any case, at big concerts it's common to assume the opening band will suck and people commonly hang out in the parking lot partying and socializing with other fans totally missing the first act. We had 5th row seats for this cobcert and wanted to secure the seats early because in those days Metallica shows were still big but not commercial to the extent they are today. That means they were far rowdier and attracted lots of bikers, working men in construction, manual labor jobs like steel workers, boiler makers, industrial mechanics as well as rowdy young metal heads. The concert was at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin and sure enough there were lots of rough looking dudes, skanky chicks, and a good percentage of all around degenerates in attendance (I am sure people would have thought the same of us but because were seniors in highschool at the end of our road for scholarships for athletics- our 7 man crew consisted of football players, wrestlers, hockey players, track athletes (we all loved to party but had signed athletic codes and 2 of the guys had recently been recruited by universities in the NCAA for football, and 2 of us were hoping to secure wrestling scholarships, one guy was working on a division 1 hockey scholarship. Being young punks we saw ourselves as legitimate and considered the other hard rock fans to be burnouts not considering we were all in the same place doing the same things. In any case, we wanted to avoid getting in trouble because we were in violation of the Athletic Code during football season. If we blew off the opening band there would certainly be guys in our row of seats. The last thing we needed was a fight, which would involve getting thrown out and possibly arrested considering our underage status, fake IDs so we could get wristbands and buy liquor at the refreshment stands etc. We made sure to arrive early and catch what we figured would be some shitty warm up band. We were mistaken. At the time the cult were not well know in the states but their image had changed with everyone sporting long hair, leather, jeans and looking more like a traditional hard rock band. They played the songs from their not yet released album Sonic Temple but they played She sells sanctuary and many of the new tunes like fire woman that sounds very similar to She sells Sanctuary. We had a blast hearing them. The problem was grunge was just 2 years away and all the pregrunge bands other than a Handful got swallowed including the cult. Underrated band
I absolutely love this story. My husband graduated in ‘91 and was a NY All State Football Player. He had offers from countless schools, but he chose the most coveted, Penn State, to play Division 1 Football. He was the Captain of the football team (obviously), but not your typical jock. He was at heavy metal concerts that were not the typical chose of music taste for the captain of the football team of Homecoming King nominees. He didn’t look for fights, but certainly didn’t back down from one - especially if it meant defending someone he cared about. Everyone knew that about him. Don’t *uck with his friends or family. So long story not so short. He had officially committed to Penn State and he knew one thing…DO NOT GET IN TROUBLE. This was his ticket out of a horrible family life and out of Long Island. In any event, someone messed with one of his family members and he didn’t just get in a fight. He put this kid in the iCU. They weren’t even sure if he was going to make it. He gets arrested and Penn State revoked his scholarship. This is one of the songs he called “songs to my wife”. He passed away unexpectedly at the age of 45 still in as good of shape as he was at the age of 18. I used to joke with him when I would hear his alarm go off every morning at 4:30 am to head to the gym before work “why do you still do this? You know there’s no big game for you tomorrow. Those days are long gone” . He would say “it’s all I have going for he, if I lose this I’ll lose you.” That couldn’t have been farther from the truth, but he was determined to never lose his “sanctuary”. Thanks again for sharing your story, brought me to tears and evoked so many emotions for me.
"Never heard of them"?! Jeez, I've been jamming to the Cult since I was a teen way back in 1985. You two should most definitely listen to more of their songs and albums. *_Edie ciao Baby_* from *_Sonic Temple,_* their 4th album, is a nice video (for me personally) because it came out in 1989 during that summer's Tim Burton's Batman movie craze.
In all fairness, they burned very bright for a while and then seemed to flame out into oblivion. What I can't get my head around are people who have never heard of the Stones, who have been around for literally lifetimes.
@@bobbyklein2255 Well, for that matter, I’m too young to have heard of Bach, Mozart, Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Charlie Parker, Billie Holliday, Hank Williams or the Everly Brothers, but not only have I heard of all of them, I listen to them. I didn’t grow up in a cultural bubble. It seems that the more information there is access to, the less people are able to process. Now, with all the information in the world in the palm of people’s hands, it seems like attention spans have shrunk to the last two years of what was in the radio or on social media. I get it, but it’s a shame that people don’t explore more. And I absolutely support all these young people discovering, and enjoying, genres and artists they’ve never been exposed to before.
Saw these guys open for Metallica (And Justice for all tour) The Cult sounded great live and honestly thought they should have had a longer set because they were Soooo good.
That's so weird, I saw them open for Metallica in '89 in Spokane as a huge fan (Love was my favorite album at the time) and I met Ian before the show at my work and he was a dick and I told the Rolling Stone photographer that and he laughed and said, you gotta get to know him. Anyway, I thought they sucked live, so much so, I stayed for Metallica and they blew my mind.
been listening to this band since the 80's, one of my favorite rock bands of the era, they are unique and the music is just as good as it was then, sometimes music tends to follow what is current in that generation and doesn't last, but these guys had going on in spades, love their sound.
I was djing at a club in Shreveport Louisiana in 86, huge hit, the lead singer ended up being the fill in for the late Jim Morrison on the door's reunion tour, early 90's.. this is from their New Wave post punk Days, they ended up getting a little bit harder on the next album and then after! The cult are incredible! Glad you enjoyed it!!
"Love Removal Machine", "Fire Woman", and "Edie (Ciao Baby)" are all straight bangers. Ian Astbury (singer) and Billy Duffy (lead guitar) are both amazing performers.
The Cult was a vastly underated band in the 80s and Billy Duffy is an amazing musician. I remember seeing them in Jackson, MS when they warmed up Metallica (1989 I think....Sonic Temple had just come out and Metallica had not yet released the Black Album) Apparently Ian got his arse beat by Hetfield in an altercation before the concert....he did wear shade the whole concert. Killer show all around.
This was favorite song ever the day it came out. After all the music before and after, it is still my favorite of all-time. Driving your car in the middle of the night in the dark with no other sound is awesome
I'm a massive Cult fan, love that you reacted to them and enjoyed Ian's showmanship. They have some really cool albums that each have their own distinct vibe. From Electric I'd suggest "Love Removal Machine", from Sonic Temple "Fire Woman", but my all time fav (and a sleeper tune) is from Love, "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon" an atmospheric tune that is really different from most of what you hear in rock. Cheers to you both, enjoy the channel, keep it up!
Been a big fan of this band since 86. Have seen them a dozen times over the years. Still putting on incredible shows. Ian and Billy still kill it live. I even own a piece on one of Ian’s broken stage tambourines and Billy’s stage used guitar picks. Check out a song called Rise . Same vibe. Huge sound.
when i heard this in 85 i went out and brought the album .. still one of my favorite songs still have the album ,, and me and my 55 yo mates still jam to it ...
Ian Astbury is the singer. There is another great song of this album (the whole album rocks btw) which is Rain. You should also check out X "Los Angeles" for another guitarist with the spiky blond hair: Billy Zoom!
It is about and arround of the new wave time , The magic of this song lies in the magic white guitar who makes heavenly rithms . it is playing amazing rifs . Glad you like it because this is a masterpiece . The guitar melody could hang a few days in youre head ;-)
Originally called “The Southern Death Cult”, The Cult is one of my favourite groups of all time. “Sanctuary” is their signature song. I’ve seen them many times and I’ll go see them again anywhere anytime. Ian Astbury often referred to their style as “Zen Buddhist Punk Rock”. I’d suggest “Love Removal Machine” as a track you listen to.
I'm 61 yrs old and I used to dance to this song at a club called The Ocean Club in Houston back in the day. If this song does not get your blood pumping you gotta be dead. Great song back in the Era of extasy!
Ian Astbury is a criminally underrated front man. Should be in any conversation of all time best lead singers.
100% agree

I saw Ian front the Doors back in the late 90s at San Diego's Street Scene..... Insane stuff.

The lead singer is Ian Astbury. This song is from the album LOVE (1985). This whole album is nothing short of sensational! Try "Nirvana", "Rain", Or " Revolution" from the same album. You won't be disappointed. ☮☮☮
So glad you mentioned Nirvana. Such a great track. College radio played the hell out of that song my freshman year.
@@normanleroy1874 100% there best song from Bradford England home of the cult
Listen to Sanctuary through a good set of headphones, the bass will blow you away! One of the best and one of the most underrated bands from the 80's....if you want to hear more, I can recommend songs like "Fire Woman" and "Rain"...you wont be disappointed!
I saw the Cult live in Houston back in 1992--GREAT show. The entire 'Electric' album is pure gold.
Howdy from H-Town! Sadly never saw The Cult live, but I did see a pretty decent tribute band for them before Covid
Saw them at the old Verizon wireless theater
The CULT IS AMAZING!! 🎼💃💃💃💃💃💃🌞🌞🌞🌞 Every time I ever saw them!- and I usually loose my voice for a couple of days! As I appreciate a band that will BRING IT EVERYTIME!!
Back in my dance club days. This song was always on my request list... Dance floor would be empty, in long line for a drink...dc, I'm a start the dancing on da floor by myself even!!! Wooohoooo ❤❤❤❤❤🌞🌞🌞🐦🐦🐦
Billy Duffy is a massively underappreciated guitarist!
I've been in LOVE with Ian since I was 13 years old, I'm 49 today!
The Cult is one of my top favorite rock bands. I've seen them live once in 2006. They all still entertained as well as when they first came out in the 80's. Ian's voice was still spot on. They sounded incredible live. They ended the show with this song.
The singer is Ian Astbury
The Cult continually change their sound, from psychodelic, to alternative, to metal, to Indy
They need to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ❤🎉
"Never heard of them"?! Jeez, I've been jamming to the Cult since I was a teen way back in 1985.
You two should most definitely listen to more of their songs and albums. *_Edie ciao Baby_* from *_Sonic Temple,_* their 4th album, is a nice video (for me personally) because it came out in 1989 during that summer's Tim Burton's Batman movie craze.
Haha! Dating yourself there...but I'm right with you on that. Jamming to this while cruising as a teen. Awesome time!
In all fairness, they burned very bright for a while and then seemed to flame out into oblivion. What I can't get my head around are people who have never heard of the Stones, who have been around for literally lifetimes.
They’re too young to know
@@bobbyklein2255 Well, for that matter, I’m too young to have heard of Bach, Mozart, Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Charlie Parker, Billie Holliday, Hank Williams or the Everly Brothers, but not only have I heard of all of them, I listen to them.
I'm with you on that have been listening to these guys since the 80's. Bloody awesome band
Glad you two discovered and were enriched with the great music of The Cult, great Musicians led by that Huntingly powerful voice 🎶
I saw The Cult twice in 2019, in Atlanta at The Tabernacle and in Port Chester NY at The Capitol Theater. Absolutely rocked it. Ian and Billy were ON.
I was at both of those shows as well. Good run of shows for them. The bring it every night
Was obsessed with this record, back in the day. Long time ago.
HEAD COUNT!!
WHO PLAYED THIS JAM TO ITS LOUDEST WHILE YOU HEAD BANGED???
THIS IS HEAD BANGIN HEAVEN BABY!!
The singer is Ian Asbury, he also sang with the other members of the Doors for a time, very similar dynamic as Jim Morrison
My first concert was The Cult opening for Metallica on the Justice Tour. Both bands were awesome.
Same. Saw them open for Metallica!
Love Removal Machine
Saw Guns N Roses open for The Cult in 88. Nobody cared about the opener. 😂
been listening to this band since the 80's, one of my favorite rock bands of the era, they are unique and the music is just as good as it was then, sometimes music tends to follow what is current in that generation and doesn't last, but these guys had going on in spades, love their sound.
I love this song so much. The mood is awesome, they are rock legends
I saw them play live in concert. The B-52s opened for them. Amazing show!
Great band! They were considered alt rock, post-punk back then.
kind of Gothic, new wave, too.
The Cult is my favorite “Oh my gosh I forgot about them, they’re awesome!” band.
Fantastic group!!! You MUST listen to this song at FULL volume to really appreciate it.
The vibe at an 80's underground goth club and this banger comes on
How'd I miss this one? Excellent review! I miss the old school reviewing very good stuff. Keep discovering please!
The Cult's Edie, Sweet Soul Sister, Love Removal Machine, or Fire.
And rain
Brother Wolf, Sister Moon is another awesome song by the The Cult.
No other singer could front The Doors better than this man. His voice is amazing!
Scott Weiland did a better job, in my opinion. But Ian was also fantastic.
The Cult is one in a million! You guys need to check out more from them for sure ! You will NOT be disappointed!
This band is a magical phenomenon and can't get enough of their powerful hypnotism
They opened for Billy Idol in Montreal either 87 or 88.. they are phenomenal live!
Been a big fan of this band since 86. Have seen them a dozen times over the years. Still putting on incredible shows. Ian and Billy still kill it live. I even own a piece on one of Ian’s broken stage tambourines and Billy’s stage used guitar picks. Check out a song called Rise . Same vibe. Huge sound.
The 80’s and 90’s alternative music is something you need to investigate.
when i heard this in 85 i went out and brought the album .. still one of my favorite songs
still have the album ,, and me and my 55 yo mates still jam to it ...
There are a handful of songs from the 80s that are absolutely timeless. This is one of them.
Ian Astbury is the singer. There is another great song of this album (the whole album rocks btw) which is Rain. You should also check out X "Los Angeles" for another guitarist with the spiky blond hair: Billy Zoom!
I love Rain , I just love the Cult, takes me back to my teens,
Exene Cerevenka was married to Viggo Mortensen for awhile.
I’m a newbie here so I’m not sure if y’all have done it yet but Fire Woman is an incredible song! I think yall will love it!
I'm 61 yrs old and I used to dance to this song at a club called The Ocean Club in Houston back in the day. If this song does not get your blood pumping you gotta be dead. Great song back in the Era of extasy!
