"Open Letter to a Landlord" is my favorite Living Color song. Reminds me of growing up in the Bronx in the 70's. These men are all world class musicians and coreys voice is still as good to this day.

I was raised from my mom and dad on 70s 80s and 90s rock and heavy metal and I love this song. So good and they surge it had in the 2010s due to WWE and CM Punk brought a whole new audience to it.
To me, this name confusion is part of the reason Living Colour is criminally unknown... the other part of the reason is Cult of Personality coming out around the time the band "The Cult" was also starting to get played on MTV.
The show “In Living Color” was produced by *Keenan Ivory Wayans, and his family all starred in it. Jim Carrey was also a star there. FIRE MARSHALL BILL AMD HANDYMAN FTW! *corrected info
Check out Thin Lizzy - “The Boys are Back in Town”, Phil Lynott is the bassist and lead vocalist and is considered by many to be one of the best black rock frontmen ever…and the tune is a banger.
That song is about .right here in Manchester. And about the quality street gang, members of the 60s gangsters. They used to look out for Phil in moss side area of Manny. Born in Ireland but a song made about Manchester..😂 Rip Phil... legitimate legend and barrier breakers...
Found you guys by random chance, lol. This song, when it comes on the radio, we stop everything and sing along. We can't NOT. It's so good. Takes me back to my much younger days. Great reaction. As for the deeper meaning of the song...A cult of personality is when people get drawn into the ideation of a central figure. Just like all the famous and infamous leaders named in the lyrics, they had a following of millions all hanging on their every word. Some for better, and some for worse. It's a warning against losing your own identity within the shadow of an influential figure, and a call to think for yourself.
If you’ve only reacted to one of their songs, you have to react to “Open Letter (To A Landlord)”, “Middle Man”, “Pride”, “Type”, “Someone Like You”, “Nothingness” and “Postman”.
A “Cult of personality” is a descriptor of the phenomenon of the leaching of a figurehead’s character traits into a subculture, or society at large. It may refer to religious and or political ideologies. It is not necessarily positive or negative. The expression simply refers to the human propensity to follow BIG personalities. This is one of the reasons the song references historical figures that we view as both good and evil. I was a teenager when this song was released and always the interpreted it’s meaning as “Great people are not always good people. Watch closely for the difference and don’t follow just anyone “. Love you guys! What a genuine and refreshing young couple. Have a wonder filled birth and keep on keeping us old farts entertained!
90s is where rap groups and rockers crossed paths like RunDMC and Aerosmith did Walk This Way and Anthrax did a song as well with Public Enemy. Music is music and even metalheads and rock stars have always appreciated all forms of music.
Hard to believe but the RunDMC and Aerosmith jooint venture happened way back in 1986, lol. Anthrax's song with Onyx, "Slam", was even more popular and well known than "Bring the Noise" is from their joint venture with Public enemy. "Bring the Noise" didn't start as a collaboration, Anthrax originally was just sampling Public Enemy in their version that they first played on stage in 1989. About 2 years passed before Public Enemy actually joined in and became part of the performance. Pearl Jam collaborated in the mid 90's with Cypress Hill for the song "Real Thing" while Del tha Funkee Homosapien (Gorrilaz) teamed up with Dinosaur Jr. for "Missing Link" in the same time frame. You even had R.E.M. teaming up with KRS-One for "Radio Song" that was on their LP "Out of Time" that came out in 1991. Lot's of cross genre collaborations back then and they continue up to this day. Jay-Z has had more than one.... Good stuff!!!
Sadly Living Colour had to deal with a lot of racism since their rock audience was mainly white. Whenever they played with other bands, a percentage of the audience would become abusive and throw things.
Actually he was an actor way before starting Living Colour. The main film I've seen him in was Oliver Stone's "Platoon" (1986). He plays a soldier in the platoon named Francis.

Every politicians, movement leaders, life gurus and coaches and influencers, once they devolved into cult of personality it's time for you to take a step back with a bag of salt and reclaim your individuality. This song is choke full of wisdom and a cautionary tale. "only you can set you free".
As for the “i am” statements, he’s speaking from the perspective of the manipulative leaders. It’s a poetic device that I’m sure you’ve identified and loved in other kinds of art, that’s what he’s applying here.
My mom saw them several times when I was a preteen/teen. At one show she met one of their moms and used to write back and forth with her (this was before anyone had computers). Love this band.
What a hilarious show , "In Living Color" . Jamie Fox and his character " Wanda" . Loved it. The meaning of the song is .... all these names he dropped were all Leaders that people believe every word that person spoke . There were only 3 names( JFK , MLK and Ghandi)that were in the song that wasn't a dictator and murderer.....
Not sure FDR should be in the list of dictators and murderers, but I liked the line of "only you can set yourself free". People of all stripes take other people's word for it and rarely have an original thought for themselves or do their own research before coming to an opinion on something. Maybe if people did more thinking before they act or vote things would take a turn for the better. Otherwise, we may as well all be sheep in the "Cult of Personality". Loved the reaction, guys!
Whether leaders are good or evil, they say and do the same things to gain the hearts and minds of the people - who then become mindless drones for or against them. Its as if they were in a cult. The singer isn't saying he is the cult of personality, the song is sang from the first-person perspective of this concept of fame turning someone into a cult leader.
A cult of personality is basically when a single person has a huge pull of influence, for better or worse. FDR, Malcom X, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and most recently Donald Trump all had or have cult-like followings. "I tell you one and one makes three, and you believe it because I said it" type of followings.
I would agree about Trump... To a point. Most of his supporters, have a very grounded reason for following him. We know when he is bullshitting and why. If Trump said that line, we know he would be playing the media or his political opponents. Not that the answer is three.
Lyrics: Look in my eyes, what do you see? The cult of personality I know your anger, I know your dreams I've been everything you wanna be I'm the cult of personality Like Mussolini and Kennedy I'm the cult of personality The cult of personality The cult of personality Neon lights, Nobel Prize When a mirror speaks, the reflection lies You won't have to follow me Only you can set me free I sell the things you need to be I'm the smiling face on your TV I'm the cult of personality I exploit you, still you love me I tell you one and one makes three I'm the cult of personality Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi I'm the cult of personality The cult of personality The cult of personality Neon lights, Nobel Prize When a leader speaks, that leader dies You won't have to follow me Only you can set you free You gave me fortune You gave me fame You gave me power in your God's name I'm every person you need to be I'm the cult of personality I'm the cult of I'm the cult of I'm the cult of I'm the cult of I'm the cult of I'm the cult of I'm the cult of I'm the cult of personality
The Wayans brothers, I think, got their start on the show "In Living Color." I thought it was hilarious - and all that and a bag of chips! This singer, Corey Glover, played Judas in "Jesus Christ, Superstar" on Broadway and was in the movie "Platoon." I remember the first day this blasted out over the radio - loved it since Day 1!
I remember watching this on MTV when it premiered and rushing out the the store to buy the album. Vernon Reid is a legend. This one song cemented that. His solos melted my brain. I didn't know one could do that with a guitar. Oh and Corey Glover is a great singer. The whole band is awesome.

Living Colour had some very socially-conscious lyrics if you dig deep into them. After this song, they released “Glamour Boys” which got decent airplay and MTV-play. Off the album Vivid, but underappreciated are “Which Way To America?” (a personal favorite) and the slightly slower paced “An Open Letter To a Landlord”. I’d love to see you listen to one of those last two.

Corey Glover is an awesome singer, and "Living Colour" was a great band live. They, along with "Kings X" (another rock/metal band with an African American lead singer) were heavy in my rotation in high school. Also, many people don't realize Glover was a good actor as well. Check out the academy award winning flick from 1996, "Platoon". Glover has a small but very well acted part in the move along side some really big Hollywood heavyweights...
Love this song. Great musicians with a powerful message. Love to see Rob and Amber getting into it. One thing that stood out to me was at 6:30, Amber heard the lyrics, and it stopped her in her tracks -- very very moving. Brought a tear to my eye... I was only 7 when we lost JFK, and after that we lost too many more including MLK and so many others.... the lyrics tell the story along with the video...beautiful combination of intelligent writing, wrapped around powerful music. Boy, it's great to be a human, and to be able to express both extremes of emotion in one song !!
Excellent timing, since professional wrestler CM Punk (who is friends with the band, and used this song as his entrance theme) is rumoured to be coming out of retirement after 7 years.

"Open Letter to a Landlord" is my favorite Living Color song. Reminds me of growing up in the Bronx in the 70's. These men are all world class musicians and coreys voice is still as good to this day.
1 thumbs up is not enough for this comment. I wish i could give more thumbs up for this.
"You've got to fight for your neighbor" at the end still sends chills down my spine.
When they come out of the solo and Corey Glover roars in with "we've lived here for so may yeeaars!" - friggin awesome
I was always surprised that Pearl Jam didn't point to Open Letter when they played Ledbetter. Direct comparison

Damn I was just exiting being a teenager when this came out, I'm 51 now and I still listen to them, great music never dies! The musicianship here is as good as ANYBODY🔥🔥🔥
Same, I'm 52 and love these guys
50 year old Brit here, and I remember listening to them when I was a teen. I'm so glad they are still active!
Got to see them live. Just wow!
And the lyrics tell us all that we need to know about our world today.
"When a leader speaks, that leader dies". One of my most favorite and one of the truest lyrics ever uttered.
"When the Mirror speaks, the Reflection Lies" is another great line from the song

"Living Color" is the band.
*Living Colour is the band
Saw them live a few nights ago in Sydney Australia. Still rocking hard as ever and of course they closed the show with Cult of Personality. Epic.
They’re spelled differently. The Band is Living Colour, and the show was “In Living Color”!
That's because Reid, who formed the band was English, so spelt it the non-American way.. :)
To me, this name confusion is part of the reason Living Colour is criminally unknown... the other part of the reason is Cult of Personality coming out around the time the band "The Cult" was also starting to get played on MTV.
@@kartaan You may well be right lovey :)
The show “In Living Color” was produced by *Keenan Ivory Wayans, and his family all starred in it. Jim Carrey was also a star there. FIRE MARSHALL BILL AMD HANDYMAN FTW!

It was originally "In Living Colour" until the band sued the Fox Network.
Check out Thin Lizzy - “The Boys are Back in Town”, Phil Lynott is the bassist and lead vocalist and is considered by many to be one of the best black rock frontmen ever…and the tune is a banger.
Forget him being black. He was just a GREAT rocker!
Whiskey in the Jar, Jailbreak, Dancing in the Moonlight, The Emerald, Cowboy Song are all great songs

"In Living Color" was a comedy skit show like SNL. "Living Colour" was a bad ass hard rock band
"We can't NOT" I love that! Everyone does I think, almost like its a law, you have too.
If you’ve only reacted to one of their songs, you have to react to “Open Letter (To A Landlord)”, “Middle Man”, “Pride”, “Type”, “Someone Like You”, “Nothingness” and “Postman”.
Also Memories Can’t Wait!
Check out an album called Judgement Night movie soundtrack it's got every track a rap group teamed up with a rock band totally awesome
Sadly Living Colour had to deal with a lot of racism since their rock audience was mainly white. Whenever they played with other bands, a percentage of the audience would become abusive and throw things.
Living Colour was an 80"s band
This song came out in 88
Anthrax also did LETHAL with rap group UTFO and it was awesome.
Of my generation. One of the best songs ever.
Another great song by them is "An Open Letter To A Landlord."
Most definitely!
I also told them that, 1 of my favorites.
The singer Corey, went on to do musical theater. He toured with Jesus Christ Superstar. Great performer.
Actually he was an actor way before starting Living Colour. The main film I've seen him in was Oliver Stone's "Platoon" (1986). He plays a soldier in the platoon named Francis.
Thank you. Jc superstar is a favorite of my wife and I. I’m going to try find a video of his performance.
That's true. I forgot about Platoon. He's definitely put in the work.
Still sounds amazing too!
Corey Glover was also an actor and appeared in the Oliver Stone classic 'Platoon' with Charlie Sheen.
Living Colour is a band with lyrics that are relevant and timeless. "Open letter to a landlord", "This is the life", "Pride", "Bi", "Nothingness", "Wall" are only some of their great songs
Forgot about "Open letter..."
Welcome to 1988, I was 20 years old when this song came out that you are just hearing now 35 years later! Sounds just as brand new today as it did 35 years ago. I first saw them on Arsenio Hall, and I was blown away that there was a Black Heavy Metal Band out and they were this good! I never tire of hearing this song or watching this video! Song is probably more relevant today than it was 35 years ago, unfortunately! People are slow to listen and slower to change!
They're talking about people following who they see on the TV and media, like a cult. Great song and great reaction.
We have a lot of cults going on in the world today, sadly

Not always a bad thing. He puts Stalin and Gandhi/ Mussolini and Kennedy in the same comparison. One side is a heroic and one is corrupt and evil, but they have the cult of personality in common.

This is an amazing tune vocally, musically, atmospherically perfect.
Of course Obama had no cult like followers. “Yes we can” (say it over and over)
I would agree about Trump... To a point.
Most of his supporters, have a very grounded reason for following him. We know when he is bullshitting and why.
If Trump said that line, we know he would be playing the media or his political opponents. Not that the answer is three.
Yes, Agolf Tweetler has become the cult of personality of many feeble minded orange fool-aid drinking simpletons
People who also fall into a cult can't help but take any comment about their cult personal and have to defend themselves.
Trump raised 75 million dollars from his followers for "stop the steal" and spent none of it on it. lmao
Lyrics:

I know your anger, I know your dreams
I've been everything you wanna be
I'm the cult of personality
Like Mussolini and Kennedy
I'm the cult of personality

The cult of personality
Neon lights, Nobel Prize
When a mirror speaks, the reflection lies
You won't have to follow me
Only you can set me free
I sell the things you need to be
I'm the smiling face on your TV
I'm the cult of personality
I exploit you, still you love me
I tell you one and one makes three
I'm the cult of personality
Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi
I'm the cult of personality
The cult of personality
The cult of personality
Neon lights, Nobel Prize
When a leader speaks, that leader dies
You won't have to follow me

Living Colour had some very socially-conscious lyrics if you dig deep into them.
After this song, they released “Glamour Boys” which got decent airplay and MTV-play.
Off the album Vivid, but underappreciated are “Which Way To America?” (a personal favorite) and the slightly slower paced “An Open Letter To a Landlord”.

Glamour boys seems more relevant today with flex/influencer culture that exists today. Song was a few decades ahead of its time.
