I am so thankful that Cat Stevens songs are still being heard today. They are so good and timeless. He is really a great musician and has so much emotion in his songs! The songs help in difficult times.

To my mind, Cat Stevens is one of my country's greatest singer/songwriters.
He wrote nearly all of his own stuff and was an excellent musician on guitar and piano.. the only song that I know of that he didn’t write was Morning has Broken, but he created a new intro on piano for the song.
He does write his own songs, he is a genius. I have been his fan for over 50 years.
I remember having a wicked fight with my mother as a reen and going to my room and blasting this song on my sister's 8-track!!! 😅
Cat was in the process of writing a musical about the Russian Revolution. This was the first song he wrote...........but he never finished the musical. He released the song as a part of the Tea for Tillerman album. The song is about a father who doesnt want his son to get caught up in the communist revolution.
I loved this. I was brought up with Cat Stevens my mum was a big fan. And when my daughter was at primary (elementary) school we used to drive down the road singing to "I love my dog". Although my girl always pointed out that we never had a dog, only a rather dopey cat! Anyway she'll turn 19 in three weeks, she's emigrated to Canada and has a place to read biology and chemistry at the university of Vancouver. She spent her gap year working and reading, and I am so proud. But she's still my little girl. If she's worried about anything I get a voice call and it's like "Mum, what should I do?" We're not father and son, we're mother and daughter, but this song still stands. We both need to learn from each other.

We had a wide variety of music. Rock n Roll was in its infancy and there were no hard and fast rules on what constituted a successful song. There was a lot of experimentation and the best of it is what we remember as the classics. Each band had a unique sound. Nowadays, the artists and producers know what makes a song successful and they all use that formula which means everything sounds the same..........when everything sounds the same, there is nothing that stands out and nothing is memorable.

the song is about the father and the son and their conflict. stevens writes the responses from both of them. that's the song.
What a talent.
This song, with a couple of others, was actually written with the idea of it being part of a musical called 'Revolussia', set during the Russian Revolution, but the project never actually came to fruition. Cat's father owned a Greek restaurant in the West End of London, which is the heart of London's theatreland which Cat always had a fascination with. The song originally was the son wanting to go and fight in the revolution and his father trying to dissuade him. The song eventually appeared on one of his most successful albums,' Tea for the tillerman', and with the lyrics being none specific enough for the song to have a more universal meaning.

I recall hearing this in the early 70s as a 10 yr old. Then much to my surprise I came home at 4am drunk in the early 80s put on MTV and saw this video on the TV. It was the highlight of my night!! What a song!!!

Cat's album "Numbers" is his search for a religion and a purpose in his life. Very good, deep and sad. My favorite out of all of his works, thought they are all superb.
Of course he writes his own stuff ! A Genius ! But he does do a great version of Sam Cooke ‘s “ Another Saturday Night “ .
