When I was a young man and still at home, this song fit my life perfectly. Now, I am an old man, and I wish I hadn't been in such a hurry to get away from my father, who only wanted the best for me.
I grew up with this incredible master's voice & songs. He does have a magical quality about him. There are others to take a moment with such as, Wild World, Peace Train, Miles From Nowhere (my cancer song), Where do the Children Play and many more! Enjoy! Thank you for sharing this.
There’s an unusual older movie named Harold and Maude. It showcases Cat Stevens’ songs. The music and the story are very delightful and make you contemplate your life.
Now you understand why this was a must see asap. Many of us were heavily influenced by this song. Four Grand kids are my focus these days. Thanks again.
Cat Stevens, born Steven Demetre Georgiou; 21 July 1948),commonly known by his stage names Cat Stevens, is a British singer-songwriter and musician. He has sold more than 100 million records and has more than two billion streams.[2] His musical style consists of folk, pop, rock. Cat Stevens formally converted to Islam on 23 December 1977, taking the name Yusuf Islam in 1978. Yusuf is the Arabic rendition of the name Joseph; he stated that he "always loved the name Joseph" and was particularly drawn to the story of Joseph in the Qur'an.
Next up from Yusuf / Cat Stevens, I suggest "Oh Very Young" or maybe "Where Do The Children Play?" or maybe "Hard Headed Woman" or maybe "Miles From Nowhere" or maybe "Morning Has Broken" or maybe "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" or maybe "The First Cut is The Deepest" (the cover of which was a huge hit for Rod Stewart) just to start✨
The song is about being happy despite your dreams not being entirely fulfilled as you grow up and the parallel of a father’s dreams forgotten but his happiness is for his son now as he encourages him to understand the challenges of life.
You have no idea how many people who react to this song have no clue that it's a conversation between a father and son, which seems so obvious, not only in the lyrics but in the two very different "voices" and the actual argument going on in the background vocals. At one point, the father says, "Look at me," and the son says, "No." but somehow people listen and don't get it. I love that you got it from the start.
Cat Stevens was one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all times. Back in the early seventies he was one of the giants of Rock & Roll. He had many hits from one of his greatest albums "Tea for the Tillerman." Such as "Morning Has Broken." "Father and Son" "Peace Train" "Where do the children Play" "Wild World" "Moonshadow" and "The Wind." You can't go wrong going down the rabbit hole that is Cat Stevens.
There are not many songs that touch you and make you think of your father and understand what he was trying to teach you! Now in your old age you understand the wisdom of the only man you every LOVED!
You are a wise young man! This whole album was my therapist during my troubled teenage years, and still is to this day. For me, it could have been titled Mother And Daughter. Seriously, explore more of this album! My faves are Miles From Nowhere, Sad Lisa, On The Road To Find Out and more. He was born in London to a Greek father and a Swedish mother but converted to Islam later in his life. One of my all time fave artists
Cat Stevens, harry chapin, and Jackson Browne are all my favorite storytellers of their day! This is emotional. My favorite of his is Wild World! Really really good and a bit more upbeat. Thank you!🙏🏻💖
"Father And Son" - Cat Stevens It's not time to make a change Just relax, take it easy You're still young, that's your fault There's so much you have to know Find a girl, settle down If you want you can marry Look at me I am old, but I'm happy I was once like you are now And I know that it's not easy To be calm When you've found something going on But take your time, think a lot Why, think of everything you've got For you will still be here tomorrow But your dreams may not How can I try to explain? When I do, he turns away again It's always been the same Same old story From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen Now there's a way And I know that I have to go away I know, I have to go It's not time to make a change (Away, away, away) Just sit down, take it slowly You're still young, that's your fault (I know) There's so much you have to go through (I have to make this decision) Find a girl, settle down (Alone) If you want you can marry Look at me (No) I am old, but I'm happy All the times that I've cried (Stay, stay, stay) Keeping all the things I knew inside It's hard But it's harder to ignore it (Why must you go) If they were right, I'd agree (And make this decision) But it's them they know, not me (Alone) Now there's a way And I know that I have to go away I know, I have to go
This is my favorite Cat Stevens song.I remember feeling this way when I was getting ready to graduate and my mom and dad couldn't understand that I didn't want the same kind of life that they had had.
What to think, or How to think....I enjoy suggesting to you what to watch, and I'm always impressed by what you have to think about it on your own. It's always something very bright and respectable so you certainly know how to think just fine my friend.
Got to see him in 1976 in Memphis, TN, when he was young and vibrant. His vocal tone was MESMERIZING! I was introduced to him thru my big sisters LP of his Tea For The Tillerman record (1970) which I believe is his best effort. Second to that would have to be his Catch Bull At Four record (1972) . Pretty sure I wore the grooves off of those two records back in the early 70's. His voice has always moved me to a different place. Some must-listen suggestions: 14th Ave./ The Boy with The Moon and Stars/ Wild World/ Where Do The Children Play/ Hard-headed Woman/ Father and Son/ Morning Has Broken/ Moonshadow/ and Miles From Nowhere for starters. Great reaction, very insightful comments,TY.
This came out in 1970, a time of great social upheaval. Younger people were questioning traditional values and also our involvement in Vietnam. I think many felt betrayed by the older generations because so many young men were being drafted and sent off to Vietnam. I think kids felt like their parents didn’t realize how much the world had changed and were giving their children outdated advice. I’m sure a lot of parents were horrified at some of the decisions their kids were making, including “free love” and experimenting with drugs. The term “the generation gap” was used a lot during this time. (This is an expert analysis from someone who was eight in 1970. 😁🤷♀) Great reaction. I appreciate your insight.
When this song came out we all knew how to think. I don’t remember anyone confused about it being a conversation between a father and son. It’s in the title! Times are different now. We’re used to the thinking being done by the devices. I’ve seen so many reviewers think it’s all from the father perspective which is frustrating. I knew you’d get it. I was pleased.
Jumbotron I love your honest and intelligent reactions to some of the best music we grew up with. Back when there was real talent and lyrics were deep.
I hear this song very differently now as a dad of grown sons than I did wen I was 17, believe me. Cat Stevens wrote a lot of songs that grow up wit you, so listen to some more, maybe Peace Train" or "Sitting."
Like many others in the music world Cat got lost in drugs and was very susceptible to people offering to help him get clean. He fell into a group of Muslims that completely changed his thoughts about life. He started to renounce all his previous music and went into an Islamic recluse for several years, until going broke made him appreciate music again.
If you want to understand / appreciate Cat Stevens I think you have to listen to one of his albums start to finish. It's a particular vibe - Mona Bone Jason, Tea for the Tillerman or Teaser and the Firecat. Obviously too long for a react video but I think you won't be disappointed
Cat Stevens is who he was when he performed this song. He converted to Islam back in the 70's and stopped all music. He has recently started recording again

In the early-mid 70's, every single teenage girl had a poster of Cat Stevens hanging on her bedroom wall.
(Because, gods, look at him!)
Yep. Me, too.

Those are all great songs... Love Miles From Nowhere
He wrote this song when he was just 22, that's wisdom beyond his years

Some great songs, of which this is the best, by this guy. Try "Morning Has Broken" and "Wild World".
You got it right from the start! Some people misunderstand this song. ❤❤❤

You need to listen to his other really great songs including Peace Train & Morning has broken. You will love both!
Great suggestions!

Yes...I was a young teenager singing this song in rebellion. Now I'm old, dad's gone and I long for those times in my life😢
Hi tamisandidge, yes I agree 100% my dad passed away in '93, he was wise and funny and I still miss him every day......every day😔
"Father And Son" - Cat Stevens
It's not time to make a change
Just relax, take it easy
You're still young, that's your fault
There's so much you have to know
Find a girl, settle down
If you want you can marry
Look at me
I am old, but I'm happy
I was once like you are now
And I know that it's not easy
To be calm
When you've found something going on
But take your time, think a lot
Why, think of everything you've got
For you will still be here tomorrow
But your dreams may not
How can I try to explain?
When I do, he turns away again
It's always been the same
Same old story
From the moment I could talk
I was ordered to listen
Now there's a way
And I know that I have to go away
I know, I have to go
It's not time to make a change (Away, away, away)
Just sit down, take it slowly
You're still young, that's your fault (I know)
There's so much you have to go through (I have to make this decision)
Find a girl, settle down (Alone)
If you want you can marry
Look at me (No)
I am old, but I'm happy
All the times that I've cried (Stay, stay, stay)
Keeping all the things I knew inside
It's hard
But it's harder to ignore it (Why must you go)
If they were right, I'd agree (And make this decision)
But it's them they know, not me (Alone)
Now there's a way
And I know that I have to go away
I know, I have to go
A beautiful interpretation from you. There is no better way to describe the “generational conflict”.
Beautiful reaction to a beautiful song. You're the best! 💯
Great take, thanks for the song. My best friend and I would listen too this in the 70s.
This is my favorite Cat Stevens song.I remember feeling this way when I was getting ready to graduate and my mom and dad couldn't understand that I didn't want the same kind of life that they had had.

how to think not what to think -- beautifully put, and what I believe is the best path a parent can take :)

You hit it on the head.... Need some more Cat Stevens.
I’ve always loved this song.
love the way you comment on the songs
Last song played in the last scene of the finale of the TV show Ted Lasso. Perfectly placed.

a classic classic cat stevens song -check out WILD WORLD it is also timeless
This artist name will be much more searched and recognized as Cat Stevens in your Playlist
Thanks for changing his name, as it was when the songs were recorded. He stopped after the name change and went a little crazy.

Cat Stevens - "Miles From Nowhere"
Now here's a rabbit hole you want to explore jm. LOTS of great stuff. Personally I would play " boy with moon and star " for you next.
Dude, you're really good at this. Yes! Sub'd
There are several reaction channels but yours is the best. You should check out THE LAST RESORT by The Eagles.
You have assessed this song perfectly. Try his song, Into White on the same album.
Morning has broken is a good one
Exactly. But remember the son said he doesn't listen. Hard to have parents like that.
