The first time I heard that song was in 1978, I was 16. I was that young man. Today I am 58 and I have three boys 22, 20, and 16. hearing it today made me remember many feelings of my youth, but over all it has reminded me that my boys are looking for their own space in this world, and I need to let them do it. A great song, a great rendition by DM. Cheers.
I lost my Dad in 1969.I am now 70 years old and the first time I heard this song was in the 70’s. After all these years I still feel this healing conversation. Thanks Cat for the tune , and thank you Dave for reminding me of the healing moment.
@King_of_Dragons listen to some Jim Croce too. His Son plays the guitar also. And his wife has a restaurant In San Diego called “Croce” saw Jim and Cat together.
Never skipping any Father & son Covers, i remember when me and my siblings were younger, he would always play this song on repeat and we would all sing along, today it’s only me and my father that do that because both my sisters left school, and i still love the song along with my father, best memories to be cherished forever. never forgotten.
I was 18 when Tea for the Tillerman was released and remember how I thought this song summed up my relationship with my dad. Now I’m 70 and would give anything to have this conversation either my son who passed away this year
One guy, one guitar. No high tech electronic shit. Simple song. Brilliant lyrics and music, absolutely beautiful. Thank you. Let’s bring real music back.
I was a Cat Stevens fan in the 70,s. I was devastated when he chose a different path in life. I missed him but it was the life that he wanted. I’m so happy for him but so glad he is back singing so that another generation can enjoy the experience I had as a young man. Play on my friend.
How is it that the mere timbre of his voice and the sound of strings can evoke tears, emotions, regardless of the lyric? As a listener, it’s almost as though your own movie starts playing in your head, your memories.. as always, THANK YOU DAVE.
Dave was quoted veryyyyyy early on in his career when asked about his love for the acoustic guitar something along the lines of "it's easy to travel with and play anywhere....and when you can play Father and Son all of a sudden you're making out a lot more"
Heard this one a few times with dad. He had my first Dave Matthews CD as well, Under the Table. He passed away in June this year. Only 62, dementia. Alchoholism is a dangerous addiction that so many people battle. My dad was the best person to have adventures with. Thanks for this new gem.
My dad passed away suddenly in August at 58. He struggled with alcoholism for the last 10 years. I’ll never understand it, but I miss him and think of him often. Great cover.
I discovered Cat Stevens the year I graduated high school at 17. My father died when I was 4 and after being in a foster home there was a small amount of money for me from SSI and I got a funky, old apartment over a grocery store. It was sparsely furnished and I spent the last bit on a nice stereo and a collection of albums. Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, mostly newer folk with a little Grand Funk Railroad thrown in, all of which still dot my playlists. Later I remember my lovesick 13 yr old playing How Can I Tell You to death. Nothing like Cat Stevens to calm & soothe the heart and mind during covid. Dave nailed it. 👏👏👏
What a great song by Cat Stevens and wow......what a great song for Dave. Watching my children grow and now have jobs and children. It's a pleasure to watch them grow and they now like Cat Stevens, Dave Matthews and this song. Cats in the cradle as well!
My dad introduced me to Cat when I was like 6, this was his favorite song. Lost him in ‘04. Played this and the Wind at his funeral and watching one of my all time favorite musicians play this song brought tears to my eyes. Father and Son with a lil Dave twang. Love it!
My father use to say he would gladly give his life to save mine…… I never understood what he meant…… until I had a son of my own…. and I would gladly give my life for his…. I now understand my old man ….. I love and miss you every day
I was the young man then too. This song always puts me in mind of that saying: :By the time a young man begins to realize that his Father MAY have been right, he has a son of his own who thinks he's wrong."
My father showed me this song when I was just a kid and here I am now, just months away from being a father myself. I don't know why this is so emotional to me but listening to Dave singing this song just gets me...
I used to listen to this song as a teenager in the 90's and it always hit that emotional spot! Dave Matthews cover is like no other cover. Thank you for this!!
Dave is such a great dude. And if you notice, he accidentally goes to D instead of E minor near the end ("harder to ignore it") yet catches/switches it in time - phew! That D is also a Bm at times during the song, there're essentially interchangeable in that tune. Had the pleasure of seeing DMB this summer in Bangor, ME,, and at Willie's 90th at the Hollywood Bowl. His version of Time Slips Away (in which he also had a little flub and he giggles to stage right, prolly so stoned!) is FN incredible - Google it! - he took it to a another level, the highlight (no pun intended) of that weekend for me. And his intro comments were hilarious. Arguably the most magnanimous mega-star of all time, me loves Dave.
It’s sad that he has such a negative stigma..he is such an incredible musician..I’m 38.. I’d argue he is amongst the best of my lifetime .. especially if you consider the musicians he surrounded himself with.. I really wish I’d have got into DMB earlier in my life
The first time I heard that song was in 1978, I was 16. I was that young man. Today I am 58 and I have three boys 22, 20, and 16. hearing it today made me remember many feelings of my youth, but over all it has reminded me that my boys are looking for their own space in this world, and I need to let them do it. Been listening w/o choice, but so grateful, since it came out. Ty M&D for great taste in music!
Me. 3 girls 29.28&19 last one with Downs Syndrome.
@King_of_Dragons listen to some Jim Croce too. His Son plays the guitar also. And his wife has a restaurant In San Diego called “Croce” saw Jim and Cat together.
It's you're 59 birthday
Never skipping any Father & son Covers, i remember when me and my siblings were younger, he would always play this song on repeat and we would all sing along, today it’s only me and my father that do that because both my sisters left school, and i still love the song along with my father, best memories to be cherished forever. never forgotten.
It’s wild how perfect Dave’s voice is for this song. I’d love to hear him cover some more of Cat Stevens’ stuff.
I would love an entire Dave Matthews album that covered Cat Stevens
Indeed
He is great, as is Cat Stevens, but he us just singing in the same register as the original?
Love it. Cat Stevens though appreciated by many is hugely under appreciated mainstream! So much personality and uniqueness.
A delightful rendition
Cat Stevens’ music affected me when I was a teenager in the ‘70s...still does..
Ditto Steve!
I’ve never heard anyone come close to the original... until now. Dave owns that
Dave is so great at covers.....this is a sensational song by one of my favorite musicians covered by one of my favorite musicians.
I was 18 when Tea for the Tillerman was released and remember how I thought this song summed up my relationship with my dad. Now I’m 70 and would give anything to have this conversation either my son who passed away this year
Really sorry to hear that Tom.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope you’re doing ok.
I can't imagine your pain Tom. Hope you'll be ok.
Much grace till you meet him again in resurrection.
I’m sorry for your loss.

Same, brother. This was great
Didn’t know I needed this

One guy, one guitar. No high tech electronic shit. Simple song. Brilliant lyrics and music, absolutely beautiful. Thank you. Let’s bring real music back.
Dave Mathews is a musical genius. His voice, but also his original music is iconic. Love Dave.
Brilliant. He's stays true to the original but at the same time it's all dave.
The only word possible is brilliant!
You nailed it. Couldn’t have said it any better.
🥰🥰🥰
36 here. Never really had a dad. Dave is my favorite and this brought a tear to my eye
I was a Cat Stevens fan in the 70,s. I was devastated when he chose a different path in life. I missed him but it was the life that he wanted. I’m so happy for him but so glad he is back singing so that another generation can enjoy the experience I had as a young man. Play on my friend.

No regrets, think I’ll call my pops today. Thank you Dave 👊🤗
C'mon keep that Cat Stevens tune alive.
Man I love this!
Dave was quoted veryyyyyy early on in his career when asked about his love for the acoustic guitar something along the lines of "it's easy to travel with and play anywhere....and when you can play Father and Son all of a sudden you're making out a lot more"
Nice! So true......
Awesome cover. He does this incredible song justice. Just another time to reflect on how talented Dave is.
Heard this one a few times with dad. He had my first Dave Matthews CD as well, Under the Table. He passed away in June this year. Only 62, dementia. Alchoholism is a dangerous addiction that so many people battle. My dad was the best person to have adventures with. Thanks for this new gem.
I also lost my dad this year to Alzheimer's at 61. He used to sing me this song. Hang in there Joseph hope your doing alright
(hug)
My dad passed away suddenly in August at 58. He struggled with alcoholism for the last 10 years. I’ll never understand it, but I miss him and think of him often. Great cover.
Oh, UA-cam, my sweetheart, how did you know I needed to hear this tonight?
I lost my father a few years ago, and I was missing him a lot today. This hit home. Thank you so much ❤️
Same James. Same.
Same
Dave Matthews lost his father at age 10 as well.
Thanks Dave! You’re truly special to so many people. Thanks for making a difference in my life.

that might be the best Cat Stevens cover I've ever heard.
This touches me..I lost my Father to COVID19 15 days after Dave recorded this ..means so much..and I miss my Father..my best friend..
What a great song by Cat Stevens and wow......what a great song for Dave. Watching my children grow and now have jobs and children. It's a pleasure to watch them grow and they now like Cat Stevens, Dave Matthews and this song. Cats in the cradle as well!
Miss ya Yondu. Love ya brother

Super Dave, thank you xxxxx
Beautiful song, beautiful view!💙
I'm not a big Dave Matthews fan but that's the best cover of Father and Son I've ever heard. Bravo Dave.
I was the young man then too. This song always puts me in mind of that saying: :By the time a young man begins to realize that his Father MAY have been right, he has a son of his own who thinks he's wrong."
This makes me cry 😭
Thanks Dave for honoring Cat- beautiful job. Music is truly timeless!
As a dad, I could not have asked for a better birthday present.
Wow...we'll, if Cat can't do it, I'll take this version every time!
Fortunate to have seen Cat back in 75. Loved playing this song back to back with Neil Young’s Old Man
That’s the first time I’ve ever sat down and listened to the lyrics. So beautiful.
One of the best covers I've ever heard, well done. Greetings from Germany 👏🎄🙋♂️
Maybe you want to check his band out: The Dave Matthews Band. He’s a star!
Timeless beautiful classic. I wish I had a voice like Dave.

Love it thank you DM - Johan Marais South Africa
WOW! That sounded great. I love that song and Dave sounds great.
This is great. And not gonna lie, I would not be familiar with this song if not for Guardians of the Galaxy part 2 during Yondu's funeral.
Beautiful rendition of a classic song. Stayed true to the original, and added your own DMB style. Just really good all the way around.
Dave is the man been rocking since 1994
Love me some Dave Matthews❣
Your the best now and forever
Big Dave fan. Excellent job.👍
Love this version. The original has always been a favorite for me. Beautiful!
A great cover of a great song.
I saw Cat Stevens in 1974 and again in 2015. Your rendition of this amazing song is great.
Very, very good! Thanks!

Hello happy holiday and how are you doing today 😃

Ok. This is beautiful.
Thanks Dave!! Great song choice! Beautifully sung and played!!
How have i not seen this before. Amazing.
Songs of my youth❤️excellent, thank you. Dave.
I remember when this came out way back when. I was estrange from my dad then, how I wish I had those years back.
Dave Matthews covering Cat Stevens, for this 60 year old it doesn't get much cooler than that.
