Reminds me of an old clip from a 1980s Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards had John Ashton who played Taggert in Beverly Hills Cop come up on stage (an R rated movie BTW!) since the movie won - and asked the audience if they wanted to see a sequel!

I feel like racism was a bit of a problem in certain parts of the fandom. When I was a kid I remember seeing edgy jokes and art about the zebra ponies (basically a stand-in for black people), like slavery, cotton plantations, weird racial fetsh stuff, etc. The MLP fandom originated on 4Chan, so it's really not surprising that there'd be edgelords and racists in the fandom. The Aryanne OC came from 4Chan as well.

    True Story:
Back in 2016, me and an ex attended a Brony Convention in the Philippines thinking it would be like an Otaku Convention. It was much worse than we had anticipated because the adults hosting the event kept making references to 2 Girls 1 Cup and various genres of furry porn. The worst part was one of the hosts attempted to play a particularly infamous animation made by Zone Tan on the main projector screen in a room full of kids. > *little more understandable*
IMO for those outside looking in - and even those reporting on the "bad side of a fandom," it should be understood that good and bad exist in any fandom, and to act like someone saying they like a show (or any hobby) means pigeonholing them into any one part of it (good or bad) would be ... well, it'd just be logically erroneous, wrong, potentially hamful in some more extreme cases.

@@DanknDerpyGamer It would have happened a lot differently if 4chan wouldn't have been involved. I've always seen that as the root of the problem - it started with a lot of bad actors and so it continued that way with those types of attitudes. I'm not sure if 4chan wouldn't have gotten in on it if there'd even be a fandom besides the collectors. This hasn't happened with Strawberry Shortcake or Cabbage Patch Kids or He-Man or a lot of old properties that get constantly recycled. Those communities are still just kids, fans, and collectors who have their own dramas for sure but nothing like what happened with FiM.

I was the target audience for MLP:FiM around 2012 (female, age 12) and I relate to that first story, except I entertained these people instead of running... I had unlimited access to the internet and I frequented sites like Ponychan, SyncTube, and Derpibooru (I think it was Danbooru at the time?). I still have a pony related Steam username that I will never be able to change lol. I would end up doing erotic role play texts with these men that were up to 20 years older than me over Skype. When one guy thought we were in a relationship and not just role play, I let him down and he threatened to off himself. I remember staying up all night on a school night to convince him not to. I then went to my school's guidance counselor to report it but idk what they could do about it. Kinda wild to think that a 26 year old guy believed he was in a committed relationship with a 12 year over the internet that he met on pony forums.

Every fandom has bad people keep in mind this is a small amount of members. I say this not to disregard the bad things that happen in fandoms. • @DanknDerpyGamer

Indeed - and, I'll add this: People need to be stronger in denouncing others using this as an excuse to crap on those whose only relation is enjoying the same show, movie, media, etc - if the people who crap on others want to crap on those doing bad things, that's one thing. If they want to crap on those who just enjoy the same media, THEY'RE the assholes, not the ones who are expressing issues with their generalizing (contrary to what some believe - that it's somehow wrong to be defensive), not even the problem people themselves.

    • @RaptorNX01
      @RaptorNX01 6 місяців тому +3

honestly, i think the biggest problem is these thing get brought up and spoken about too much. there is this habit of dogpiling any time anything even slightly unchaste happens. take the applejack plantation picture. most had never heard about it, never heard of the artist, but when it came out, that picture was EVERYWHERE. you couldn't scroll three posts on twitter without it being talked about. and this keep happening.
it all gives this unfair view of the fandom that its full of this type of stuff, when its not. but wholesome stuff doesn't get spread around like that did. like, griffin village finally came out. the artist worked on it for like 8 years. its been highly anticipated. its an awesome animation, very wholesome. but there wasn't a fraction of the attention given to it.
fact is most of that stuff comes from 4chan, IE, its mostly trolls. the attention is WHY they do it. they want the reaction. they want you to speak about it. cause they think its funny. and as long as they get fed, they'll keep doing it.
i'd rather focus on the good stuff, which there is far more of it.

So the brony fandom is heavily associated with the autism community because most autistic adults are more likely to be open about liking something that society deems as childish and not "normal" for an adult to enjoy, which is a huge problem because there's an unfortunate amount of autistic men that are coddled and allowed to act in egregious ways because they're autistic and "don't know any better." The problem here is that they absolutely do know better, autism doesn't make you a degenerate or a moron. But they're allowed to be inappropriate and endanger children because they're disabled. It's a huge issue in the autistic community but the people (usually autistic women) who point it out often get berated and told that we just "don't understand." There's nothing we can do about it and it's very upsetting.

I'm a brony myself, and I find it very odd how people are zeroing in on the fandom and trying to find the darkest and meanest stuff to dig up about it. The vast majority of us are normal, well-adjusted people who just really liked a show, and we expressed our love for it through art, music, etc. Every fandom in life has a small portion of crappers ruining things and causing trouble, but they are always a small (but very loud) minority. It's very wrong (and a logical fallacy) to judge an entire fandom based solely on its worst members.

That's because it gets views and attention. If a video was made talking about the good aspects of the community it wouldn't get nearly as much attention. Religious people can very well be negative for normalizing sexual assault abuse this one time I’ve heard incense they forgive this man yet all of a sudden when they found out that the woman who was abused when she was 16 by the guy came up and spoke out against a guy they all of a sudden went from forgiven the guy to outright disgracing him which is one of the examples of how another type of group people can be quite negative but that doesn’t necessarily mean I find all of them but there’s just some people out in the world who are just like that case in point Bronies in my little pony are really not like that in general they just want to enjoy a innocent show most likely trying to escape from all of the harsh cruel people in this world as a way of looking at something very cute sweet and innocent and there’s nothing wrong with that absolutely hell there’s even some of these guys who even make some very cute animations or even pictures I’ve seen is well of course speaking on the positive side of the spectrum paying their respects to the media they simply consume and take part in I hope for at least the people who sees these guys is weird or strange at least take into consideration that these people enjoy what they do and that just because you do not like these people or just this thing doesn’t mean you should just bully harass or even look at them in a strange way as you yourself don’t know if these guys are strange or not you’ll never know for sure without evidence.

As a member of the fandom to this day, I'll toss in my two cents about what I saw happen. On the topic of the racism inherent in the fandom, I don't think it was too much worse than any other fandom, but there was a polarizing effect, thanks in part to the stigma placed on bronies and our desire to have the world see us in a better light. To put it simply: "The world already sees us as degenerates for being 'socially unacceptable' because we like a show we aren't supposed to like. We don't want them to assume we're all racist too." This led to a lot of accusation-flinging towards artists who, more often than not, were just hired to draw an art piece by some edgy teen/young adult and weren't picky about what they drew. This led to more infighting, as those individuals were targeted unduly for something that likely wasn't even wholly their fault. Yes, they could have been more picky about what art they drew, but a lack of awareness does not mean they support what they draw.
Another side is that a good number of this art came from users over on 4Chan, specifically Aryanne. From what my memory can recall, she was held as a kind of free-speech mascot by many 4Chan Bronies, who felt that any kind of restriction to speech could be viewed as too authoritarian. Many of them did *not* agree with these antisemitic ideals, but simply believed it was wrong to censor *anything* in this day and age, especially art (and pastel ponies, I suppose.) For all its bad reputation, 4Chan can actually be a force for good at times, so I'm not trying to demonize the site. In fact, while I believe their methods were flawed, the overall ideals were on point. And yes, there were those who *were* a problem, and there *were* those who genuinely supported these ideals, but even among those posting dark topics and taboo subject matter, many of them were just trying to make a point. In one of the worst ways, they could have done it, yes, but still.
I appreciate Fox for not lumping all Bronies into the category of filth, like most videos analyzing our fandom on UA-cam. Many of us - the vast majority, if my time on popular fandom sites like FiMFiction has taught me anything - are just normal people who have very average views. A fair portion of the fandom even gained a *better* understanding of their fellow man from watching the show, myself included. I was a teenager when I started watching the show - an edgy 4Chan user who wanted to "overthrow the establishment" and join Anon, because it was the "cool thing" to do at the time. At first, I watched it ironically, like everyone else, mocking people's love for it. But as a lover of quality animations and cartoons, I was drawn in by it. The lessons, while geared towards children, were something that anyone could walk away from with a better outlook on the world, and it wasn't patronizing or talking down to its viewers. The show genuinely made me re-evaluate my life and decide that I was doing the wrong thing; walking down a bad path. Ever since about 2013, I've made it my goal to give back to the world and do my best to improve as many lives as possible. It put me on the path of psychology and set me on my road to becoming a therapist, which I'm still walking today.
I hold immense respect and appreciation for the show and its fandom. Road bumps and all.

I remember being a fan of MLP when I was 5-8 years old, there have been multiple things I saw from bronies that either confused me, scared me to death or made me uncomfortable
-I once saw a vore animation of Twilight Sparkle being eaten by nightmare moon and thought it was a scene from the actual show, so whenever there was an episode on TV that had Nightmare moon in it I'd hide away just in case the "scene" came on (I'm pretty sure you can still watch the video on UA-cam, I watched it again and its pretty obvious it isn't an actual scene from the show but I was a kid and I did not know better)
-once I wanted to draw Rarity so I googled a picture of her and after scrolling for less than a few seconds I saw rule 34 of her, the worst part was that I was near my Mum when I was doing this but luckily I managed to scroll away from the weird stuff before she looked at my Ipad
-I once went down a rabbit hole of MLP gore art (luckily it seemed like most of the art was drawn by edgy kids so the art wasn't that detailed so I wasn't too traumatized but it scared me none the less) mostly of Pinkie Pie slaughtering the characters
-I remember hearing about the Rainbow Dash jar incident but I was confused because at the time I was around 5 and didn't know what masturbation was so I thought it was pee
-I once saw another vore animation (I think it was made by the same person who made the Twilight and Nightmare moon animation) and this time it was a point of view of going into Flutter shys mouth, this time I didn't confuse it for an actual scene from the show but it still made me feel weird
-those weird 3D animations of the ponies making out and stuff
Luckily I didn't see anything else too bad unlike some other younger people in the fandom

I must clear something up with Aryanne: I don”t really know when she was made, but she was around long before that headline. But also, why she gets popularity and support vs BLM is easily explained that everyone who has seen her years before knows she’s a pony with a Nazi theme as a joke. Yes, as everything in the fandom, there are probably supremacist who actually use her to promote that horrible ideology. But the original author, and most fans of her just see her as a that: “nazi-theme joke”, not hate propaganda.

      > *because I sure don't enjoy telling people I collect MLP and being treated like I "clop" to children's characters and am alt-right.*
IMO... part of that is having to tell those people to stop being stupid, and use their brains - and understand that "some people doing 'clop' doesn't mean anyone who does enjoy the show does 'clop'," and so on and so forth. These people - ignorantly, or in some cases maliciously, are a part of why people only see the negatives - and nobody standing up to them AS WELL as dealing with the true degeneracy, is why we get walked over.
It's a problem in not just there, but in a lot of hobbies and fandoms, this idea that somehow bad people existing means that those who make bad generalizations about others to people who don't know better are let off the hook "just because reasons" more or less - when they are the ones choosing to throw the bad AND the good under the bus in a lazy manner - instead of just thinking for 2 seconds, and articulating points that call out just the bad.
People in hobbies and fandoms, IMO, need to grow just a little more backbone in standing up for themselves.

@@DanknDerpyGamer Nobody should be publicly talking about clopping, no one should have ever made that a thing, it shouldn't even have a name. This is a kids show. It's like getting off to Sesame Street characters. I know someone probably does but it sure shouldn't be a normal part of the fandom to the point where saying "I love Big Bird" would be met with talk about s*xual topics and being called a Muppet f*cker. No Bronies stood up to the people who made MLP gross and degenerate, they all made excuses when they should have policed their own fandom.
This is absolutely not on the MLP collector community because we did stand up to poorly behaved Bronies. We threw them out of our groups. We let the ones who stayed know that we were a PG community based around love of all generations and none of that 4chan behavior would be tolerated and you know what? It worked. The Bronies who stayed are awesome, respectful, and not the problem to this day. I am also in LGBTQ+ community, FNAF community, Furry community, etc so I see a lot of bad stuff being said about things I like and/or am a part of.
Before joining every community I am in, I only heard the bad stuff but that was only because I was an outsider.
What I always say is that you should never judge a community from the outside. Only once you step inside will you see just how much of the community are just loving people looking to have fun sharing their interests with fanart, theories, songs, and appreciation for others for liking the same thing. Most are normal people.
Communities only get bad light because only the bad things get big. Despite this, there will always be so many other good things. Maybe the bad things only get talked about more because the good things are so common and happen every day that it's just normalised that the community is positivity and therefore it doesn't have to be said every day how good it is.
Sometimes I wonder which communities I am in DON'T have bad history and/or people who give the community a bad name to outsiders...
But apparently every single one of them do and it is impossible to find one community without that unless it's based around a game or program that nobody knows exists lol
MLP is defiently one of the worst though when it comes to bad things getting noticed by outsiders although many other communities I'm in have also had their fair share of people doing bad things getting exposed for what they have done as well as a few other communities I am a part of.
Every community has bad things about it and every community has good things about it. Most only actively look for the bad stuff and therefore others who aren't searching come across it more. I can guarantee that even the worst communities (that obviously aren't created for the purpose of being bad) has good people in it. You just have to find them.
