  • Due to the runtime this counts as a brony documentary and, as such, it is the best brony documentary.
    Helpful timestamps:
Viewers with sensitivity should avoid: 29:21-29:31 flashing tiktok imagery, 37:13-37:39 bronies raving with strobes, 39:11-39:22 flashing gifs up on an LED screen, 48:28-48:30 a pony gets zapped with flashing magic, 1:09:38-1:11:10 some concert footage played behind credits.
Click your favorite popular brony fandom meme:
Sweetie Belle is a robot - / jennynicholson
Bright Eyes from My Little Pony Tales is, also, I guess a robot (really trying to get this one off the ground, would appreciate if you told your friends) - / jennyenicholson
Headcanon that Rainbow Dash plays bocce ball sometimes - / progamerjenny
Shipping Discord with Mayor Mare - / spider_jewel
They said the phrase “pasta button” in a late-season episode and you haven’t seen it but all the bronies keep knowingly talking about pasta button and laughing uproariously and you don’t really know what that’s all about - / spiderjewel
Pretending to be attracted to the ponies lol when you’re definitely not - / jennynicholsonvids

When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain
And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain
In the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn
They will stare unbelieving at the last Bronycon
When the first breath of winter through the flowers is icing
And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising
And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn
In the distance hear the laughter of the last Bronycon
    I'm alive, I'm alive
When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning
And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning
Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is torn
Look and see her how she sparkles, it's the last Bronycon

I was always SO happy interacting with the Brony fandom as a little girl. I LOVED attending cons, I would always take pictures with adults in full cosplay, and they’d draw my clumsily made OC for me for free while having nice, innocent conversations about the show with me. I felt surrounded by friends. I met several “horse famous” people who were, with one exception, SO incredibly kind to me, and it meant the world to me as the weird, mentally ill, autistic, often outcast kid at school.
In fact, Jenny, you and your friend made a significant contribution to that. I had made a very, VERY poor, clumsy attempt at a Derpy cosplay and I attended a FiW panel at Fiesta Equestria in Houston, Texas. I had worked so hard on it, and though it was poorly made, I got so many compliments, including several from y’all, who were so so cool and funny in my little eyes. You guys said I looked like an angel, and I didn’t get compliments like that outside of family often.
So, despite all of the weird shit and the harmful impacts I later realized exposure to the worse parts of the fandom had on my brain, I’m still very grateful to the fandom, to YOU, for that. Thank you, everypony

Europeans have mastered racism. In America it’s been taboo to be openly racist. You gotta find some kind of workaround to dislike entire races of people like how the fear and anxiety in America after 9/11 caused many people to dislike Arabic people. If you go to Europe and ask anyone about the Romani people you’ll probably get a response that’s something along the lines of “oh the *slur*? Fucking scamming thieves they are”

The video undersells how weird it was. There's a clip out there, and the impersonator literally rushed the stage during opening ceremonies, took the mic, and launched into her grift. Apparently she WAS checked by a number of people on credibility (she couldn't do the voices and claimed they were edited in post) and lies (she didn't just take credit, she said Nicholson was bullying her into silence), but I guess when you act with that much confidence..?

K L the fact that apparently no one found it suspicious she couldn’t do ANY of the character voices is so funny to me. It’s like if someone went on stage and claimed to be Tom Kenny then was asked to do the Spongebob or Powerpuff Girls Narrator voice and he was like “um I can’t they’re uh. Edited in post”

I really appreciated talking about the fandom becoming increasingly exclusionary and hostile for children to be in. I feel like adults (and especially teenagers and young adults who are trying to prove their maturity) assume that children can't pick up on hostile vibes or, dare I say, can't tell when they are being objectified or when there's a skeezy vibe in the air. On the more banal end, they assume kids can't tell when something's an innuendo or super violent- I think it's because they know how much they've changed since their childhood that they assume kids are (or should be) cool with everything because they're too dumb to notice anything.
I can remember being little and even if I didn't know why something felt weird I could tell something was up and felt uncomfortable and/or unwelcome. I ended up not watching or reading a lot of stuff that was officially for kids because there were weird adult jokes or hyper-sexualized characters in there. Also, not to be blunt but many children don't get a choice for when they're exposed to sexual stuff. Even on the most chill end of this- not even talking about more direct messed up shit- little girls know they're often vaguely sexualized by adults and hate it. I remember talking about it with my friends on the playground at age 9. I remember shopping with my mom at age 7 and being disgusted by how many pajamas and shorts had quasi-sexualized stuff like "kitten" and "princess" printed on the butt- or emblazoned with rhinestones that hurt to sit on. It took hours for us to find shorts that didn't have printing on the butt. And by age 12 odds are good you've been horribly catcalled by an adult man.
Kids get a vibe for what objectification is long before they actually know what sex is. There should be spaces and media that they can enjoy without having to worry about that, and where adult fans should take a back seat.

      Teen girl here, can confirm.
I have friends who were followed by men and asked me to stay on call with them to feel safer, I was catcalled when I was like 13 by a group of around a dozen teenagers that looked to be mostly 16yo boy’s, I see loli’s in anime I watch, I have heard the boys in my class objectify one of my classmates for her body type, ect, ect.
We can tell and we know. It’s hard to find a place where teenagers and young kids, regardless of gender, can feel safe and like it’s something actually made for them without perverted corruption.

You know what's funny? I'm actually the chairman of the convention at which you were impersonated. I remember exactly how it happened, too. I was attending to some business when some of my staff came up to me and said that we had some extra time in one of our panel rooms because of some scheduling issue or something, but they told me, "Hey, Jenny Nicholson said she can fill up that slot and entertain the crowd." I'm like, "Jenny Nicholson? Who's that?" That's the girl who made _Friendship is Witchcraft_. "Oh really? I don't remember booking her! I love those videos!" Nah, she said she came as a guest (which didn't sound outrageous, because content creators are still fans of the show like everyone else). "Oh, well, I guess if she's cool with it, that'd be a big help!" So I walk into that panel a while later and I've never seen Jenny Nicholson before. I'm just listening to this girl talk about creating the show and whatnot, then one of the crowd asks her to do an impersonation. I was interested, too. And, boy, let me tell you, that impersonator gave her best Pinkie Pie impression and I knew IMMEDIATELY that she was a fake. I called my staff together and I'm like, "Guys, we screwed up. I don't think that's Jenny Nicholson..."
When we held the convention the following year, it was kind of a meme. I even designed a shirt with a name tag that said, "Hello, my name is Jenny Nicholson," but we never sold them. It was just an embarrassing story about how we let some random liar up on stage with our equipment. Even worse was a lot of people thought we actually booked the impersonator and PAID HER. Lol

While I'm not going to sit here and say that My Little Pony taught me everything I know about being a good person, but it definitely taught me a lot about navigating personal relations and socializing. It was definitely more when I was younger but they genuinely helped me see other perspectives. While it's definitely not the same now when I re-watch the show. The only thing I wish that was touched on more in this video is going deeper into the darker sides of the Brony community. I'm someone who got into My Little Pony when I was a 12 year old girl, and someone who actively went to conventions and fan meetups, along with interacting with the online community. I had multiple instances of grown men being creepy towards me, and there are a few stand out instances I look back on and realize how not okay they were. I still remember vividly being 13, dressed up as Princess Luna at a local con and a 20 something year old guy continually coming to sit by me and make conversation, offering to pay for my badge and to buy me dinner. At first I just thought he was being nice, but then it reached a point where he came up to me, looked me dead in the eyes and said "I'm just going to be honest here, I'm sexually attracted to you." I awkwardly told him I wasnt interested and that I had to go find my friends, but it still just makes me uncomfortable to think about. The part of that all that makes me even more uncomfortable is that that I ran into him the next day, when I wasn't in my Princess Luna cosplay, and he didn't even recognize me. It made me stop and think about how this guy saw a visibly underaged girl dressed up as Princess Luna, projected his fantasy of getting with a pony princess onto me, and then didnt even recognize me when that perceived fantasy was gone. I know my first hand accounts aren't all there is and I could have just had isolated incidents, however something leads me to believe that's just not the case, and I think how underaged girls were treated within the fandom is something that needs to be discussed.

Some similar stuff happened to me when I was 14 at a mlp convention, and it kind of ruined cosplay for me. The adult male part of the fandom has a serious issue with creepy behavior especially towards younger female fans.

I remember back in 2013-ish hearing a lot of this king of horror story. As far as I can tell it wasn't uncommon for some artists to get a table at a MLP con once, see how the adult men were acting, & never come back. I know that one artist even had to let a pre-teen girl hide under their table until her parents could come find her cause a guy was following her around propositioning her.

Jayne Strange all of these stories sound so scary and horrible. i went to a brony convention when i was only 10 years old. the summer before i turned 11 in 2014. it was my first ever convention experience and i went with my dad and my friend. we went for a few hours and i got a plushie/met some of the voice actors. it was a great time! or atleast... it was a great time to 10 year old me. i realized once i was older that creepy men were constantly staring at me and even tried to talk to me when i was away from my dad. i was dressed up as my oc with paper wings and was clearly underage. lets just say once my dad realized men were looking at me that way... we left as fast as we could. in the end we were only there for 3 hours at best.

For me, they were not characters from a cartoon, but rather dolls that happened to be ponies. Their hair, and combs... were kind of everything for little girls. Anyway- they look oddly masculine now... can't imagine there being an appeal for as many little girls as there was, but who knows.

Hi, I'm 3 years late but I love your analysis, as always. Around 17:45 when you say this, "I theorize that men are not socialized to recognize uncomplicated, unsexual fondness for a female character," I couldn't agree more, and I would even drop the word "character" and just generalize it to women in general. I can't speak for bronies since I'm not one of them, but I'm saying it as a person who was assigned male at birth, was raised and socialized as that, and had LOTS of experiences throughout my life where I did just that: became incredibly fond of various awesome girls and women in my life but didn't really have the frame of reference, experience, examples, knowledge, etc to understand that I was simply feeling a general and platonic fondness for them as people, not romantic/sexual attraction. In fact, I've come to understand over time that most or maybe all of the "crushes" I had one girls growing up weren't really sexual in nature. Obviously that's not the case for all AMAB people, but for me I've found it to be true. Either way, point being that I think you're right... there are so few examples in pop culture and even IRL with boys or men having "uncomplicated, unsexual fondness" for women that it's basically impossible for lots of AMAB people to conceptualize it. I mean I DO think some of that impulse is built-in as well, but it's also very much socialized into people like us.

I think men also aren't socialized to have nonsexual connections with other men. I mean, why else would there be so much "no homo" all the time? I'm hoping that the next generation or two of men get over that- and it looks like it's happening. Maybe in ninety years, two men can hug each other without fearing "teh ghey."

finally got around to watching this video about a fandom that took me through my tween years. i still have fond memories about the show, and its my inspiration to work as a writer in the cartoon industry now. the moment you mentioned my little pony friendship is witchcraft, i just had to gasp in excitement because i was most obsessed with the VAs (who turned out to be you!) and the songs birthed from that parody. i was so obsessed with your Pinkie that i remember writing lore for her when i was 12. im sorry im gushing a bit, but its nice to know that ive loved iterations of your work for 10 years, even though they may not hold up today. nevertheless, thank you for being you, and bringing young me so many happy memories :)
