Howdy, I'm a former member of SFS!
Fun fact about Snowdrop: originally we had 3 to 4 animators to help put it together, but at the last minute almost all of them dropped out of the project. So in order to get it done, the last animator left spent a week from morning to night animating 90 percent of the scenes. It's a miracle Snowdrop even came out.

I’m autistic, and I remember I resonated with Fluffle Puff so much due to her saying little or nothing at all, doing seemingly weird things with no explanation at all, and her tongue being stuck out a lot. I did all of those things as a child before I started masking/hiding those traits. I loved that series endlessly.

BoD and DoD were everything to me!!
"Children of the Night" was a pretty big one, as well. That one was one of my favorites of the fan animations. It basically served as an MV to a very beautifully sung cover of Come Little Children of Hocus Pocus (one that I listened to way more often than I should've, if I'm being honest) but with its story focusing more on noncanon MLP lore. If there was a fan animation that captured the essence of childhood innocence, mysteries that lie in the night, and the dark whimsification of the both combined, it was this fan animation, right there.
Yes! This was my favorite. I used to hum the song when I was trying to fall asleep.

Smile HD is probably something I remember very fondly. It was hyper violent, but it was honestly to the point I couldn't take it seriously. Unfortunately that many were apparently scarred by it
That's the video that made me not watch the shows anymore. My kid self couldn't handle it at that time 🤣
Even back then i found Smile HD super cool, like how the animation is on beat with the music, and just how fluid everything was! It was just really badass to me

Im currently working on an animation for a very old mlp fan song that Im surprised doesn't have one yet (at least not a full one, not that Ive seen anyway).
I suck at drawing, cant draw ponies for the life of me, cant shade for the life of me, still havent memorized mlp anatomy, oh and Im terrible at animating and am on a phone. This is going to go GRRRREAT! *And now I have to actually do it because I have already asked the song artist for permission and she said yes so the pressures on

The 2010's were a golden age for mlp animations, i mean i may not have seen them all but i do know that there were all kinds like awesome animations, weird animations, and creepy animations but they were all creative and well made nonetheless and i still congratulate the talented animators for giving those animations to the fandom!

Yeah it was a really good parody song of an already existing Minecraft parody song that was based off of the Last Friday Night song by Katy Perry.
Honestly it's just as catchy as the other ones.
Am I the only one who's beyond shocked that this fandom NEVER got into the re-animated craze that was popular a few years back?
Hasbro would’ve taken it down, and the fandom was dying out after mid-2010s.
The ones I remember the most are “The Moon Rises”, “Spare” (with Luna), “Lullaby for a Princess”, the Owl City “Shooting Star” (a Twilight animation), “Dinky’s Destiny” and “Project Thundercloud”, “I Am Octavia”, “Picture Perfect Pony”, and also “A Tale of One Shadow”. And of course the other ones mentioned in the video like “Snowdrop” are unforgettable. Those ones completely amazed and delighted my child brain back then lol. And there still impressive to this day ngl

Hey Skunks, did you know when UA-cam decided to make people label videos that were 'child friendly' or not, they actually labeled Smile HD as kid friendly purely because it had MLP chars in it lol. A lot of people were waiting for this kind of stuff to happen when UA-cam decided to do this after that lawsuit they had lol.
I've seen family guy and king of the hill clips get labeled as kid friendly as well as some anime targeted towards adults and older teens lol

Rainbow Dash Presents is an animation series by Dawn Somewhere (used to be FimFlamFilosophy) where he and his friends retell famous mlp fanfics but with the characters personalities being shifted to that of Greg's abridged series, The Mentally Advanced Series. It's my favorite out of the mlp animations and I always find myself coming back to them

When I was younger, I GENUINELY thought Double Rainboom was a real episode. Since I was only 6 at the time I didn't notice the difference in animation and voice acting or that it was even a crossover. I don't think I actually knew who the Powerpuff Girls even WERE at the time lol

I rewatch these every couple of years, even though i am completely over mlp these animations still get me. Id argue they got even more funny over the years.
Another fan project that I remember quite fondly is Turnabout Storm. While it's not really an animation, it's still a pretty well-crafted crossover series that even inspired a fan-made sequel that's ongoing (Elements of Justice). The fact that it was actually finished and given a proper conclusion is impressive too, since that can't be said for a lot of MLP fan projects. I also really liked StormXF3 and his IRL pony videos, and that guy's still making those animations to this day! (and they're as polished as ever). There's also My Little Portal, Lullaby for a Princess, The Moon Rises Alligator in the Tub... there's a lot of good ones out there

I'm happy to see Bronies are still carrying on the torch even today, but there'll be nothing quite like the unbridled creativity in the early fandom and the sheer adrenaline rush from being apart of it.

(I know the arguments about why Button's Adventures deserved a C&D, but Jan was releasing it totally for free and _never_ said he was trying to compete with the main show)

Copyright laws weren't strangling, people got to make content freely and I think that freedom allowed people to be creative, sure there were some edgy/offensive stuff made using the MLP brand but we also got some cool fan videos.

I know you didn't talk much about Pony.Mov for the sake of avoiding controversy, but there is one thing it has in common with some of the more wholesome animated series. Like Button's Adventures and Fluffle Puff Tales, Pony.Mov had its own ask blog focused on Jappleack, the version of Applejack from Apples.Mov.

ive been going back and rewatching a lot of these animations recently. they came out when i was a 6-10 year old kid who barely spoke english so it feels kinda weird now lol. very nostalgic

Fallout Equestria was a big favorite au of mine. Not only was the fan fiction completed, it also got an audio drama narration that only got as far as five episodes, but an sfs animation using the audio from the first audio drama was made and done super well too. This au also got a lot of fan animations and fan songs.
Button's Adventures & Snowdrop are definitely two of my favorites, but I also loved Donut Steel since it was so goofy while also accurately portraying OCs & other aspects of fan culture at the time
I remember the time watching that video of a crossover between PPG and MLP. The fan animation is well-made but the funny part is that both of the creators of both shows, Craig McCracken and Lauren Faust were married.

oh man, I had forgotten about Dusk's Dawn. At the time I watched it I was like 13 or so and mostly just went along with the criticism it got because, well, it was kinda funny to make fun of, but looking back it absolutely didn't deserve the vitreol that it got. It was pretty bad obviously, but I mean, I don't know what fans at the time were expecting from an amateur fan project with a low budget and a runtime that's a lot longer than most other mlp fan animations of the day.
This brings back so many memories of the Brony fandom... thanks for sharing all these interesting facts about the fan animations. I didn't even know most of this lore behind them!

Lulluby for a Princess is, in my opinion, one of the MOST beautiful animations on the whole of UA-cam. I'm not a brony anymore but every few years I go back to that video just because of how beautiful the song and animation is
I still can't believe that the Gilda animation was the thing that brought me into the fandom so many years ago, in a way I'm really glad to find it, also the Pony.mov series it's something i re-watch with my friends every once a year, and yeah the Brony Polka it's a tear dropping animation that came out fairly recently but using the James song

I'm kind of surprised you didn't touch on the Pony Anthology series, I sometimes find myself going back and giving them a watch. Always enjoyed them and it was a good showcase of animated and musical talents of the fandom over the years. No one pony should have all that power :p.
The smile animatic traumatized me, but i adored the snowflake animatic
My one issue with the early years of the animation side of the fandom was many of the animators were too ambitious making fancy animations or feature length episodes without putting effort in better storytelling.
I'm one of the few animators who are considered to be the 2nd generation of Brony animators from 2017 to today. This was when I'm one of the many who shifted from the show style to a more original animation style for the fandom. In time many animators have become more experimental with their animations and put more focus on writing. Mostly these animators including myself will continue to push G4 MLP if Hasbro is truly gonna push that copyright restriction (which would most likely backfire), I'm still happy with what I'm doing. If you're interested in finding more brony animators then you should check out the stuff I'm making. :)

I'm glad to see that there are people in the fandom who are fighting to preserve the animation community. We've been starving for such content for a really long time and hopefully G5 will create a resurgence in that community.
@EG Studios It's good to know that some semblance of fan animation (and fan content, in general) is still going... even after Friendship is Magic ended. Also, you've pointed out what exactly went wrong with some animated projects made by the fandom (the ones that managed to see themselves to completion, at least).
It's also rare to hear someone openly say that they enjoy the time they've had so far within the fandom while being able to make fan content along with any original ideas they have. Anyone else would have been quick to pretend that they were never involved in any fanworks and act like it never happened once they'd get to do paid professional work.
Speaking of original ideas, all the best of luck on the 'Sparky the Hummingbird' series and any other future animated projects to come. Keep working at it and someday, you'll make something special.
As a former brony and was very active around that time, i agree. Many brony fan animators were way too ambitions and sure there are some series manage to released a pilot and episodes such as My Little Portal, many were cancelled including Fallout Equestria.
However, i do give them credit for finishing it. As for games, unfortunately were not so lucky, many didn't make it. I think LOE is the last active project that i know of.

I watched Smile HD as a young teenager and it still messed me up for a bit. I can't imagine how bad it would have been for a little kid. That being said, your recreation of it was hilarious.
The .MOV series was huge when it came out, nobody had seen anything pony-related like it. Was very well animated for the time.
Surprised by no Rainbow Dash Presents mention, the series parodied fanfic readings and still holds up with some very witty delivery.
I love the more cute wholesome animation still and will still go back and watch them if they’re still on UA-cam. They’re just so good.

I'm surprised that you never mentioned the MLP fan animationz by Dawn Somewhere. They were really funny to watch as a kid, as they had their own plots and own lore.
Bride of Discord was my whole life back then! On the downside, I was exposed to a lot of stuff that someone my age shouldn't've been exposed to. Not an animation, but does anyone remember coming across an explicit mlp visual novel? Cause those images burned into my 11 year old brain and now they're part of my life forever against my will.
A series I used to absolutely adore as a kid was Rainbow Dash Presents
I rewatched them recently and some of it did not age well (mostly the racist af My Little Dashie episode) but overall it was a fun time

Another animator I remember from the fandom was Mr Anonymous I think that was his name? His ponysona had a paper bag over his head but he did quite a handful of pony animations based on episodes of the show but sorta in a nutshell type jokes.
I used to watch them a lot on his DeviantART account back in the day same with this one pony animation group on there as well.
Might that have been Mr. Poniator? That was his MO, to the extent that fans marveled at how quickly he was able to generate parody animations following most new episodes.
My MLP animation phase memories consist of slight ambient noises on top of Snowdrop scenes and the song "Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing on Rainbows."

Ok so the first piece of MLP animation I ever saw was a Fluttershy Gmod animation set in the TF2 universe and for the longest time I thought Team Fortress 2 had actual My Little Pony characters in it and when I finally played the game I was so disappointed

These my little pony animations were my first exposure to the internet, adding more salt to the wound. Sure, it traumatized me as a child and developed into me never sharing what I watch UA-cam thus having trust issues in the process, but I was truly amazed and ‘happy’ at the time. It introduced me to a community of fandoms, explored different types of videos on UA-cam, branching out to sonic and Mario videos somehow, evolving to fnaf and other mainstream stuff, and growing an amazing tree of interest in my current life. I wish I can go back in time and watch all of these all over again, I was truly a happy child.

auugghh one of the most nostalgic pony animations for me are from the Ink Potts crew-- Always been a theatre nerd and to see MLP stuff combined with musicals was always a treat-- not to mention the increase in quality over the years.
