  • In this video, I meet up with my boi Trey Fishing, and we do some chill harbor fishing in Dana Point Harbor! Trey catches huge spotfin croakers, except the funny thing is that we are using the exact same bait and he's catching all the nice huge fish haha. But overall, we had a lot of fun trying out different spots of the harbor to fish. Thanks for fishing with Sven Trey! c: We also caught some opaleyes, Trey caught a rock wrasse and a nice Sargo, a few butter perches, some calico bass, and Trey also caught a 16 inch jacksmelt. Overall, pretty cool day of fishing :D Thanks for watching, have a blessed day! c:

#firstfishfreedom is a tradition that I started a while back. The basis for this tradition is to release the first fish you catch, regardless of what it is (prized, PB, good eats, maybe even world record someday haha). I will only keep the first fish if it is gravely wounded or gut shotted (and a species I can legally keep). If I keep the first fish, then I will pass on the tradition to the second fish, and so forth. Any day of fishing is a blessing, catching a fish and beating the skunk is another blessing on top of that, so I want to return that blessing and luck back to the fish, so they may live another day, get bigger, and maybe I catch them again in the future c:

The Sven is a custom rod that Amber got for me ^-^
amzn.to/3K7tq9C (Penn Conflict II 4000, you can choose different sizes as needed, overall great saltwater reel, very smooth cast and reeling!)
amzn.to/39dNdHF (Okuma Celilo Salmon/ Steelhead 8'6" Medium, a really good solid beginner rod in my opinion, I'd use it for surf fishing and jetty fishing. Good flexibility for casting far and feeling bites and good reach fishing over rocks for me :D)
amzn.to/3ED5ERL (Penn Pursuit III 3000) Choose the correct size for your needs! Clam = Package Type c: This is a good budget reel for beginners, I like the way it handles and it is very comfortable to use. It has great line capacity for 20lb braid so it's a great go-to reel for medium to light setups.
amzn.to/3vCCgGX (Fishing Bait Thread, very helpful for securing non-sturdy baits to your hook, highly recommended if you use bait such as mussels!)
amzn.to/3Kgo38c (I normally use braided, my default line for general purpose is 20 lb Power Pro Spectra Braided Line, Moss Green. Choose the lb you need for what you're targeting, but you can never go wrong with this brand).
amzn.to/3EDRdNh (GoPro Hero9 Black: The GoPro I'm currently using. Great battery life, especially when filming in 1080p. Favorite function is the stabilization option, keeps footage from getting too jumbly :D)

Great video as always Sven. Your buddy Trey is a natural, those were some really nice fish that he landed. Good to know that there's many decent fish swimming around in the harbor. I'll have to try to find some time to go fishing there myself. Keep it up Sven, I'll be looking forward to where you will fish next.

Thanks John! Yeah Trey should change his name to Trey Be Slaying Fish or something because it was crazy to watch him pull up fish back to back 😂 I still think it’s silly that we were using the same bait and he still caught almost all of them haha. I’ll give you a hint for the next video, I catch a for sure PB fish ;) and it’s also in Dana Point! :D

Feathers would work, I've had luck on krocodiles, kastmasters, anything that mimics a baitfish. Bonitos are highly aggressive, especially if they're in a feeding frenzy so as long as you toss out a lure and jig it in while they're there, they will tackle it c:

You right Jiggstah jigfishin, as of late, most of the time I don't plan to do catch and cooks because it's going to be extra gear to lug out and it's already a bit rough to try to find time to start fishing haha, but I definitely need to do another catch and cook soon! Always fun and the results never disappoint c: maybe I'll try to work a catch and cook in soon but we'll have to see how my schedule works out c:

Where can I find spots to fish. I only know of the Jetty near the fuel station?

    • @SvenGoesFishing
      @SvenGoesFishing  Рік тому +2

Ooooo this is the fun part :D! First you search up the MPA regulations map for the area you plan to fish. Googling like “SoCal MPA fishing regulations map” might pop it up, or you can try Fish and Wildlife’s website.
From there, look to see where you plan to fish. If it’s not in an Marine Protected Area, you’re good to fish like normal. If it lands in an MPA, that’s where you need to double check. From at least my understand of how I think it works 😂 each MPA could have a subclass to it, like State Marine Reserve, State Marine Conservation Area, etc. Each one has its own specific regulations, always double check before you fish out there :O
Some allow fishing by hook and line only, some allow spear fishing only, some might allow bait collecting. Be sure you know what you’re getting into 😂
Then go on Google maps and turn on satellite view, look around where might look nice to fish (don’t forget safe too!). If you’re not sure, see if it looks like you can get there safely. If not don’t risk it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Then get your gear and pack light, maybe a few things you’d like to try and one rod. Head on out and scout the area. If it looks good, safe, and you are aware of potential regulations, it’ll be a fun spot to try :D!

Local tackle shops will usually have them when they have the stock. Most of them are usually close to the beach but you may have a few established ones closer inland. Google tackle shops near me and see what pops up, you can check their websites if they have one to see if they have bait selection, or you can always call during business hours and ask 😁

@@SvenGoesFishing I wish they’d increase the # of free fishing spots, but more importantly, have free fishing spots for spearfisherman. I have actually contacted them about this on numerous occasions; the fact that pole fisherman have license free spots and spearfisherman dont and how they rationalize that. They get back to me which is nice enough of them I suppose. They never have an answer however. I guess they just don’t care.

@@SvenGoesFishing I also have a real problem with the # of species limits going down in some instances, *and* geographical areas being restricted (eg laguna) all while our licensing fees actually go up! Seems they have these equations backwards… any other business the less the customer gets the less they pay. But I don’t think they care. They are the true crypto of the world “up only” with their fees.
