  • In this video, I head out to do some jetty fishing out in Dana Point, CA! Day 1 is an old solo fishing trip I forgot about haha :D Day 2 is when I went fishing with Sarge, and after many years, sarge finally caught a fish! :D
Caught a lot of dinky silly fish the first day, a dinky pacific sanddab, some halfmoons, a senorita, and a butter perch! On day 2 I caught like 3 very nice-sized opaleyes out of nowhere! I also share some beginner-friendly jetty fishing tips and tricks that I use when I'm fishing very close to the jetty rocks! Unfortunately, Sarge wasn't able to catch any good-sized fish, but together we were able to help him catch his first dinky opaleye c: It was fun fishing with you John, I know this trip is way overdue but better late than never! Thanks for watching, have a blessed day! c:

#firstfishfreedom is a tradition that I started a while back. The basis for this tradition is to release the first fish you catch, regardless of what it is (prized, PB, good eats, maybe even world record someday haha). I will only keep the first fish if it is gravely wounded or gut shotted (and a species I can legally keep). If I keep the first fish, then I will pass on the tradition to the second fish, and so forth. Any day of fishing is a blessing, catching a fish and beating the skunk is another blessing on top of that, so I want to return that blessing and luck back to the fish, so they may live another day, get bigger, and maybe I catch them again in the future c:

amzn.to/3OyWpq4 (Okuma Nomad Express, this rod is pretty beefy, I'd get this guy for charter boats. It's also a travel rod that comes with a case, might be handy if you like to travel and fish. I like to also use this while jetty fishing because it's strong c:)
amzn.to/37JqGBU (Daiwa BG 4500, paired with 40 lb braided), a pretty solid saltwater reel, great choice for charter boat fishing, can handle potentially larger catches out in sea)
amzn.to/39dNdHF (Okuma Celilo Salmon/ Steelhead 8'6" Medium, a really good solid beginner rod in my opinion, I'd use it for surf fishing and jetty fishing. Good flexibility for casting far and feeling bites and good reach fishing over rocks for me :D)
amzn.to/3ED5ERL (Penn Pursuit III 3000) Choose the correct size for your needs! Clam = Package Type c: This is a good budget reel for beginners, handles well and is very comfortable to use. It has great line capacity for 20lb braid so it's a great go-to reel for medium to light setups.
amzn.to/3vCCgGX (Fishing Bait Thread, very helpful for securing non-sturdy baits to your hook, highly recommended if you use bait such as mussels!)
amzn.to/3Kgo38c (I normally use braided, my default line for general purpose is 20 lb Power Pro Spectra Braided Line, Moss Green. Choose the lb you need for what you're targeting, but you can never go wrong with this brand).
amzn.to/3EDRdNh (GoPro Hero9 Black: The GoPro I'm currently using. Great battery life, especially when filming in 1080p. Favorite function is the stabilization option, keeps footage from getting too jumbly :D)

20-22 inch Opaleye?! Holy cow that’s huge! I’ve noticed the super big ones aren’t as easily caught, we gonna need to bring a whole arsenal of baits to try to land that one :D. I’m thinking shrimp, green peas, mussels, and maybe even edamame (something I’ve been thinking would be fun to try for opaleyes)

@@SvenGoesFishing Oh yeah it's so frustrating because you can sight fish him but there are usually like 30 small ones around who grab the bait first 😂. We can try lima and edamame like you said cause they are bigger! There are also schools of 10-14"ers that often move by the same area!

Does one require a license to fish on this specific spot, I know California is pretty strict ? Loved the video

    • @SvenGoesFishing
      @SvenGoesFishing  Рік тому +6

Hi Gabriel, that’s a great question :D so for California regulations, any public pier or any jetty that is the longer one of 2 that protect a waterway does not require a fishing license. Public piers are piers such as seal beach pier, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, etc. if you fish anywhere else, like the surf or a shorter jetty, it will require a fishing license. An annual fishing license is going to run about 50-60 dollars for the year (since we are in SoCal, we also need the ocean enhancement stamp with the fishing license, it’s about 5-8 dollaps on top of that). Price may vary a bit in case they made small changes since I purchased my license but it should be around there.
All fishing regulations still need to be followed regardless if you fish in a spot that requires a license or not (size limits, daily catch limits, no keep species lists, etc etc). I would also recommend checking the regulations maps for any spots that might be in a marine protected area. California has a good bit of MPAs, some which allow just fishing for take and keep, while others are no fishing at all zones.
Overall, if you plan to pick up a fishing license, I recommend picking it up for the following year. Their annual licenses for California residence run from January 1st to December 31st, regardless of date of purchase, since we are nearing the end of the year, it would be more worth your while to pick up the 2023 license sometime in December c:
They also have daily or extended temporary licenses, the daily ones run for about 15-20 dollaps. In terms of whether or not a license is right for you, the math I worked out is that if you plan to fish at least 4-5 times a year in locations that require a license, it’ll pay for itself :D
Going back to your question, the specific jetty and spot on this video does not require a fishing license. The regulations (if they did update) might be slightly different as well so I suggest looking up the most current up to date one to double check before you head out c:
Thanks for watching Gabriel, I’m glad you enjoyed the tomfoolery that are my vidyas 😂 let minnow if you have any other questions! c:

Hi Tyler, glad you enjoy the shenanigans that are my videos :D for Huntington Beach, I highly recommend checking out Huntington Beach Pier! I used to fish there a lot when I was younger, plenty of fish such as barred surfperch and the usual croakers c: a high low rig with shrimp or mussels in the surf zone is my favorite place to fish, mackerels sometimes run at night at the far end of the pier but I usually just fish during the day. California public piers also don’t need licenses so you can fish with no hassle, it’s a great place to get into fishing and build some experience :D

Very nice Tyler, a 14 inch croaker is huge! Most of the ones we’ll catch in SoCal average 6-10 inches (unless it’s a spotfin croaker, they get massive sometimes :o). Have you gone fishing more since? :D
