  • In this video, Amber and I head down to Dana Point, CA to do some charter boat fishing on Dana Point Sportfishing's Reel Fun! We went on a 5 hour trip, a Sea Lion tried to steal our fish D: It was an amazing day of fishing, we caught lots of ocean whitefish! Like a lot of them, we threw a bunch back that were too smol. We also caught other fish such a juvenile vermilion rockfish (maybe?), California sculpins, and blacksmith perches. Amber and I always have a fun competition when we go charter fishing, she always seems to outfish me haha. It was pretty cool to see the California Sea Lion chase fish around from other anglers as well haha. Together, we got a total of 25 catches, lot's of releases but we kept 10 whitefish c:

#firstfishfreedom is a tradition that I started a while back. The basis for this tradition is to release the first fish you catch, regardless of what it is (prized, PB, good eats, maybe even world record someday haha). I will only keep the first fish if it is gravely wounded or gut shotted (and a species I can legally keep). If I keep the first fish, then I will pass on the tradition to the second fish, and so forth. Any day of fishing is a blessing, catching a fish and beating the skunk is another blessing on top of that, so I want to return that blessing and luck back to the fish, so they may live another day, get bigger, and maybe I catch them again in the future c: (does not apply on charter boats for various reasons)

amzn.to/3OyWpq4 (Okuma Nomad Express, this rod is pretty beefy, I'd get this guy for charter boats. It's also a travel rod that comes with a case, might be handy if you like to travel and fish. I like to also use this while jetty fishing because it's strong c:)
amzn.to/37JqGBU (Daiwa BG 4500 (paired with 40 lb braided), a pretty solid saltwater reel, great choice for charter boat fishing, can handle potentially larger catches out in sea)
amzn.to/3vCCgGX (Fishing Bait Thread, very helpful for securing non-sturdy baits to your hook, highly recommended if you use bait such as mussels!)
amzn.to/3Kgo38c (I normally use braided, my default line for general purpose is 20 lb Power Pro Spectra Braided Line, Moss Green. Choose the lb you need for what you're targeting, but you can never go wrong with this brand).
amzn.to/3EDRdNh (GoPro Hero9 Black: The GoPro I'm currently using. Great battery life, especially when filming in 1080p. Favorite function is the stabilization option, keeps footage from getting too jumbly :D)
amzn.to/3xJH28p (Fingerless Fishing Gloves, they got UV protection and they don't feel like they get in the way when you're handling fish or bait, highly recommend these c:)

You two looked like you had a lot of fun. I haven't had any luck on charter boats so I never went again. Do you have any recommendations? I have a lot of time the next few weeks, would love to catch something. Thank you for sharing.

Hi John, it depends where you're located, but if you're in SoCal in the Orange County Area, you can never go wrong with Dana Wharf Sportfishing (danawharf.com/fishing-trips/) or Davey's Locker (daveyslocker.com/deep-sea-fishing/?_ga=2.152821626.27173850.1629746957-507091658.1629746957)
If you want to make a trip of it, Hook's Landing charters over in Ventura, CA (hooks.fishingreservations.net/sales/) produced good amounts of fish last time we went.
If you really really really want to make a trip that will always produce excellent results, my personal favorite is the charters out of Monterey CA. I've gone with J&M Sportfishing (jmsportfishing.com/) every time I'm in that area and have yet to be disappointed (caught my PB Vermilion Rockfish with them as well!).
Few recommendations based on my experience, 1/2 or 3/4th day doesn't matter, try to stick with early morning or afternoon trips. Twilight trips for some reason have never produced good results for me. I also like to fish the bottom more often than anything so bring at least 4 oz torpedos to get down there and keep your line from swinging too much with the current.

^Here's a list of fish size limit regulations for SoCal. Always good to familiarize yourself with it c: A few fish caught from shore are open year round but have season closures when out on a boat. The deck hands on charters will help out as well!
Hope that helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask. Good luck when you go brother 👌🎣

Glad you enjoyed it, I went for a more sit back and relax approach for this video, there was definitely no shortage of fish and it was just such a nice day!

I’m going on the Dana wharf twilight for the first time next Friday, do you have any tips as far as size hooks and weights sizes? It would greatly be appreciated

It would depending what your charter might be targeting for, they may have live bait so for that I would recommend a size 2 or bigger hook, with a 1 or 2 oz egg sinker. Sometimes that doesn’t pan out, if that’s the case I always enjoy using a high low rig with a size 4-2 hook paired with the squid they provide. Use at least a 4 oz torpedo so it doesn’t sway too much, and you can fish all the way at the bottom, or after you hit bottom just crank up 1-5 times for different depths. The captain will provide you supplemental information at every spot you stop at to give you a general idea for what you can or should target c: you can definitely bring your own bait as well, I would recommend shrimp because I always like using shrimp, or anchovies as you don’t have to cast it, just drop it down, good luck! Let minnow how it goes :D!

@@SvenGoesFishing no luck with bottom fishing the whole boat basically struck out but we did catch lots of bass and barracuda and some Macs. Overall fun experience and someone caught a huge Black Sea bass he battled it for a good 30 minutes lol
