After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone. - Розваги
I’m calling it right now…Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard is gonna steal EVERY scene he is in!!!
Completely agree with you. That was definitely their best casting choice.
I am going to cry through the whole thing
i am going to cry my late mum took me to see this back in 2014 and i have seen it every time it is on tour.
Same. I read the book, and when the play came to my area, I took my mom to go see the play. We had awesome seats 3 rows from the front, and just to the right of center. My mother loved it, as did I. I later found out that it was the first time she had been to a theater to see a play. It wasn't too long after that she lost her battle with cancer. If you haven't read Gregory Maguire's take on fairy tales, and other stories near and dear to our hearts, I highly suggest you give him a try.
They’re doing a great job hiding the fact that they’re splitting this into two parts to be released one year apart
Yea this is a friggin shame. A year long intermission is a crime
Following in Dune's footsteps
....Dune, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Twilight: Breaking Dawn, The Matrix films. This is nothing new and it often just reeks of a cash grab. The one thing that sets _Wicked_ apart from the other films is that it's based on a property that already has a _runtime_ versus pages in a book. The question is whether this could actually be an instance where fans would prefer the filmmakers flesh the films out a bit and preserve as much of the songs from the stage production rather than butchering it to fit a two or a two-and-a-half hour timeframe.
@@amac0190Tell that to Harry Potter and Twilight!
Yeah such a big secret like no one knows 🙄
now that I saw most the movie.....
But you haven’t heard the songs in full. They’re so moving (at least the original ones)
and there are so many things that you have not seen.....you really haven't seen all the movie.
Dying to see this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am SO exited for this movie, and the casting is great. Geff Goldblum as the wizard is probably the best casting choice they made(at least in my opinion), the only mistake in casting they made was with Fiyero and it's the same mistake Broadway has made in his casting all except 3 times in Wicked's 20 year run but Johnathan Bailey could still be a good Fiyero.
Johnathan Bailey has been doing theatre since before he did film and television. I think he is a fine choice for Fiyero.
@@OKellies That's not why casting him for Fiyero was a mistake, and I do think he will do a good job. The problem that they made by casting him that Broadway has been making for all except 3 times in 20 years is getting a white person to play Fiyero when Fiyero is not white, and I am not blaming Johnathan Bailey for that. I have the book Wicked is based on(Life and times of the Wicked witch of the west), it's huge and I don't expect him to read that whole thing or look through the whole thing for Fiyero's description just for an audition, especially when, again, Broadway has been casting white actors for him all but 3 times in the 20 years of it's run. The people who are at fault for that are the people on the casting team who didn't do their research.
This looks good. I haven’t seen Wicked. So I’m going into this blind.
I've seen some snippets here and there. But, I totally haven't seen the whole show/story even on Broadway! So, same here!☝🏻🥺
The stage musical is great. I've only been able to see it twice, on tour.
The book it's based on is spectacular. This looks like it has incorporated all the wonderful music and the fantastic story from the book.
@@ChristopherRuggles I'm sorry, but I have to say I very much disagree. I'm a lifelong fan of everything Oz, but I think the main reason I've yet to jump onboard the _Wicked_ train is because I really - _really_ - disliked the novel it's based on. I think it's a really overused trope at this point to take properties originally created for an all-ages audience and turn them gritty and realistic. Sometimes it works (as in the case of the Batman comics, for instance) and sometimes it just leaves a terrible aftertaste. The Oz books themselves have been mined for films, TV series, and other media that run the gamut from being surprisingly faithful but entirely too dark (Dorothy's electroshock therapy in _Return to Oz)_ to outright horrific (the McFarlane series of reimagined figures).
With its allusions to Nazi Germany and the heavy political slant, Gregory McGuire's _Wicked_ took the story way too far out of the context I think most people hold of Oz. I've been told by several people that the musical uses the characters and the framework of the novel and improves upon it. I'm hoping that's true. I'm very much eager for the film (even if I find it _so_ unfortunately reminiscent of Sam Raimi's _Oz the Great and Powerful,_ which had interesting concepts but ended up merely being the film everyone was hoping _would have_ been _Wicked._
In the end, please don't let my words here stop anyone from reading the novel - it's entirely up to one's personal opinions whether they'll enjoy it or not, but I do think it's worthwhile to acknowledge it's not as universally beloved as the musical based on it is.
You've seen the trailer so you have pretty much seen it all now
I’m so excited
Looks amazing
Amazing😍
I love this background so incredible I knew that songs in my head right now that’s crazy right now keir xx
i cant waittt omg
This trailer makes me excited for a Sonic 3 trailer and movie.
These are completely different movies.
@@ArloKnudsenFit I know, but Wicked doesn't look good to me.
Is amazing
Went to see this at the theatre it was amazing costumes scenery everything it was brilliant X
I have very high expectations for this film omfgggg
this is amazing , i cant wait for it to come out 🥰
The book was amazing. I've never seen the play but I always wanted to. I will definitely see the movie.
It leans more into the "girlz rule, friends are 4 evar" than the book does, meaning it sands off some of the edges. At least the stage musical does.
OMG I'm dying and will rise in November
very good
Wicked is so special to me, it will be special to experience the Wicked film on the big screen!!
Omg
They basically showed the whole first act (which I'm guessing is where this movie will end). I don't know why they didn't keep Some of those key moments a surprise.
I would guess because so many people have seen or heard of wicked already that they don't think it's necessary. Like how they don't hide the fact uncle Ben dies in spiderman trailers because we'll duh
Michelle Y. looks so goooood
Oooh
❤
I can't wait I love the Wizard of Oz I'm so so excited to see this movie ❤❤❤❤❤
…………..is 1:16 a reference to THAT ONE SCENE from the original oz film?
what scene?
Looks so goodddd
I know my custome on Halloween !
I’m wondering what the collectors popcorn bucket will be? I loved the burn book for Mean girls. Something the a shape… hat bucket or broom? OR Gainda’s ball?
They did a great job it looks phenomenal already!
looks good that
1:29 is Galinda suppose to be a mean girl ?
Yea that's kinda the point of the whole musical
Looks great, but I wonder where I might find the trailer? I wasn't searching for "entire movies summed up in 3 minutes"!
I know this is an adaptation of the very famous wiked but they still shoudknt have spoiled most of the main plot points in the trailer. It feels more like a summery than a hint.
It’s 20 years since the show was first on Broadway so no excuse. And this is only the first interlude. Hence why we’re getting two films. Had the pleasure of dad taking me to West End to watch it among many musicals since I was 10 🤷🏾♂️
Is it just me, or is the oz head too calm. HE IS OZ! THE GREAT AND TERRIBLE! MAKE HIM ANGRY!
Who is watching this before MOANA 2 because I am
OK
I feel like this gives too much away. Luckily ive seen stage production few times so no spoiler for me but if you havent your not meant to know wizard has no powers
Hmm, it's basically a total summary of Act1. I am unlikely to want to watch it until Act2 is also available, as no one wants to leave after Defying Gravity and wait until another day for the rest of the story ! Also, it seems strange casting people to be students who look so mature already ... maybe Elphaba will show more range and nuance in the movie than it appears here. So far , underwhelmed given the calibre of those l have seen playing the role on stage....but when both acts are available, worth a try
I guess wait another 1&1/2 years then. You do know both leads are very accomplished and award winning vocalists.
I'm gonna be sitting in the movie theater trying to dang bad not to sing along to the songs 😅
I’ve heard that’ll be hard to do because there are going to be several new songs? I don’t remember how many offhand, but there will be surprises for folks who’ve seen the musical and are familiar with it.
@ElizaHamilton1780 that's awesome to hear though! I guess I'll hold off on looking up the soundtrack before hand and be surprised in the movie theater. I would have been either way as I never got the opportunity to see the Broadway version
Okay, Cynthia.
So the whole movie..
yikes this looks like a train wreck
🥹🥹🥹
Now, nobody can claim Elphaba is a white character.
Won't be bothering with this. Big change in witches from the original. 😅
Ariana grande is perfect to voice act thumbelina with Nicholas Galitzine as the voice of prince cornelius in a CGI animation remake for the 30th Anniversary in 2024 🧚♂✨🌷
I cant wait 😭😭😭 Ariana as aGlinda❤❤❤
This is going to flop big time… let’s see if it surpasses Cats RT score lmao😂
OMG ARIANA GRANDE
Oh boy this looks shit
Pretty sure Universal doesnt care
@davecook-vann7336 oh I know they don't if they did they NEVER Would have cast either of these two in the leads
your eyebrows...
@@lovergalbb what do my eyebrows have to do with anything lol
@@doyouhearthepeoplesing2and just what is the problem with the leads?
Wow, this is very offense. Did they really put Ariana Grande in whiteface? She is a bad person, and this movie pushing cultural appropriation. Gross
Should never have cancelled the Vincent D’onofrio version. This looks awful; catering to the LGBTQ minority. Not a great business strategy. Make movies for larger market segments.
Jump off
Oh sit down and hush. Nothing about this says LGBTQ+. Besides, anyone who knows the broadway musical knows its been extremely popular with the LGBTQ+ community even if it was.
Technically it's sticking to the Book and play whilst still being its own material
Thats the costumes and makeup in the broadway show..
Including queer people is expanding the audience for a work. Also, who do you think watches musicals? Frat bros?
This looks laughably bad. What's with the modern trend of painting evil characters as good guys forced into their evilness by the cruel oh so cruel world, thereby robbing them of agency and accountability? I've got an idea, let's apply this treatment to Hitler, or Sauron. F!#k it why not?
The musical this movie is based on was released 20+ years ago…
The book this is based on was released in 1995. It's not part of a "modern trend". If you are unable to appreciate a fuller story beyond "green woman wants a pair of shoes", then you are at a disadvantage and intellectually lazy.
u have no idea what your talking abt ignorant :)
Hahaa tell me you're uncultured without telling me you're uncultured
You embarrassed yourself so badly. That’s laughable. 🩵
🤍❤️🩹😍
We've waited nearly 20 years for this so another year for part 2 is not allot to ask of us fans 💚🖤🩷
