I always like seeing the similarities and differences between multiple people who have played the same character and appreciating what different performers contribute to a role, especially for live theatre, where you can have so many people play a character across many years that a show is running, and across multiple productions of the same show. This is a wonderful example of that!

Until yesterday I had no idea the 20th Broadway Anniversary was coming up. But this will be a time for me to celebrate. "Defying Gravity" may be the song, out of all the songs there are, that touches me the most. Because Elphaba describes how she reaches a turning point that I am still struggling to get to. It's not that I want to turn my back on society entirely, just for the price of emotional independence, but I sure hope to become way more confident about being okay the way I am, and not valuing other people's opinon on myself so high anymore. I love Idina Menzel, but I have seen her so many times singing Defying Gravity on professional recordings so I'm happy she was not singing in this video. I love getting to know the different tones and styles from the other Elphabas. They all emphasize different parts and act differently so they make the role their own and most of the videos of them are only clips from people recording the show. They deserve to be appreciated too.
I was lucky enough to see this in the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco in 2009 with Teal Wicks as Elphaba. That show completely blew me away...a memory I will always carry with me!

Does anyone else appreciate how they sang the riff at the end in unison and as originally written? Such power in returning to what made this song great.
Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! I didn’t think this song could ever be improved upon, but these ladies have given an epic performance that has my entire body tingling with happy goosebumps. Thank you so, so much. What a spectacular bright spot in the day. 🌞💚💚💚💚
I moved to nyc 20 years ago and this new show on broadway was my first experience on the great white way. All the feels right now
This was wonderful! I do wish that Idina Menzel was involved though- I had the pleasure of seeing Wicked the year she won the Tony and to me she will always be Elphaba
Her voice isn’t the same anymore! And just because she was the first doesn’t mean she’s the best 😊
Someone doesn't have to be the "best" to be your Elphie. I have seen a few.. my first was Eden Espinosa, loved her, she's MY Elphie. But I saw Fox this month and she is definitely fantastic!
@@karalynne7616 Exactly!!! My favourite was Lucie Jones in the London West end version! So good!
Her talent is still the same. Nobody can match her portrayal. Voice isn't everything.
It's WICKED how much I love this song! Love the harmonies in this performance - simply outstanding and truly out of this world defying gravity!!
I can't process such a beautiful arrangement
My all time favourite musical… have watched it 9 times when I lived in London and it’s coming to Melbourne next year… can’t wait to make it 10 times! ❤ Love this song and this is such an amazing rendition ❤
Their harmonization is incredible!
Mary Kate Morrissey deserves the next lead elphie!!! Saw her on broadway as a standby and WOW so magical!
For those of you out there, like myself, who truely have decided to live life defying gravity and societal rules I hope your journey is as rewarding as mine has been.
Help others defy gravity in what u say and do; I know you are out there.
This is more than a song, it is a way of life abd everyone can get there if you truly want it. I wish you luck
Can we talk about 3:38? Damn, Jackie! 💚💚💚
Had a master class with my choir from Iowa in NYC with Alyssa, she’s so sweet❤
I wish this was on streaming platforms!
They are coming to Knoxville, TN, and I always wanted to see the show and my amazing wife got me tickets. Can't wait Alyssa Fox is Elphaba and Mckenzie Kurtz is Glinda.
Alyssa and McKenzie are on Bway. If you're seeing the tour, the current leads are Olivia Valli as Elphaba and Celia Hottenstein as Glinda.
