Pink Floyd - "Chit Chat With Oysters" - December 1971 (Studio Europa Sonor, Paris, France)

- A previously unreleased interview from December 1971 of Pink Floyd at Studio Europa Sonor in France, is now available in full on UA-cam for the first time. Only a few edits had to be made, consisting of cutting out some of the Live at Pompeii footage due to copyright. Big thanks to Adrian Maben and Cinémathèque Française for this release! You can find the original 52 minute video here: www.cinematheque.fr/henri/fil...
Notes:
In December 1971, Pink Floyd found themselves in the small Europa-Sonore studio in Paris to improve the quality of the multi-track mixing of the film Live at Pompeii, shot by Adrian Maben. With recording engineer Charles B. Raucher, they wanted to overdub music and sound effects on the original soundtrack. David Gilmour and Richard Wright doubled their voices for the song Echoes, part I and II, Roger Waters and Nick Mason remaining in the booth. From the eight tracks recorded at Pompeii, they obtained twenty-four.
This film is a portrait of the group as it was more than a year before the release of the album The Dark Side of the Moon. It bears witness to one of the most fruitful periods in its existence. The recording session was filmed with a Coutant camera on 16mm black and white reversal stock. The rushes were found again by the filmmaker and are now preserved at the Cinémathèque française. They have never been seen except for a ten-minute excerpt used in the director's cut of Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. Adrian Maben goes back over this experience: "I succeeded in filming this session that bears witness to the extraordinary complicity that existed at the time between all the members of the group. They made fun of me, of journalists' clichés, the public, drugs and themselves. They were the kings of understatement, their dry humour was devastating, destabilizing and merciless. Especially that of Roger Waters. Richard Wright, more discreet, kept a bit apart from the others. Later on, he acquired the nickname 'The Quiet One'. It was a long day. To give themselves strength, they sent the 'roadie', Chris Adamson, out to buy a few dozen oysters and beer at the Brasserie Lorraine. Suddenly, the oyster feast became the epicentre of a hilarious, explosive conversation. They talked and talked: Pompeii, computers replacing musicians (or not), the arrival of David Gilmour after the departure of Syd, oysters crossing national borders, the Berlioz chorale, money and the astute methods they had invented to stop fighting! In short, there was a bit of everything and anything for a half-day of shooting. It must be understood that, at that time, Pink Floyd did not speak to the public, never gave interviews. For them, newspapers were devoid of interest, journalists were old and understood nothing about their music. Publicity was useless because their concerts were always sold out, word of mouth sufficing to fill the halls. This simple, amusing document is unique. The rushes did not require much editing and capture the inner spirit of the four-man band. All things considered, Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii could be shown after Chit Chat With Oysters, one being the counterpart of the other. Is this a film, a reportage or putting a disc into pictures? Forty years later, I still don't know."
Congrats to everyone who is watching this - you have now reached the top of the Pink Floyd fandom.

This moved me. Warm Regards
Thank you sir..
That's right around when I first saw it. I was 19 in '93 and I still remember watching it at some party and being blown away. Gilmour sitting barefoot in the dirt making wacked out sounds. !!
What a wonderful Mom you had. We’re glad you can treasure the happy memories.

Right!!! And Syd was pretty nice looking too way back when, at the beginning. Gilmour is my dad's age and I still have a crush on him. 😊

Roger -as much as he likes downplay PF it in his later years & thanks to found film footage- he only had a 5yr. addiction from '70-75 he'd smoke hashish rolled into tobacco.

This is truly incredible. I didn't think that any further footage from the Live At Pompeii film would ever surface, given that at some point 400 or 500 cans of footage had been burned in the french film archive.
I agree! It was a wonderful surprise seeing this appear publicly yesterday. This has only ever been shown at a handful of festivals and events Adrian Maben attended since 2013. And now, himself and Cinémathèque Française have kindly made it widely available for free for the fans!
Just the lost One Of These Days film reels to find now! Maybe one day…
The original 35mm amphitheater rushes were incinerated because the production company that financed the film went out of business but since the black and white 16mm stuff was recorded on Adrien Maben's personal camera the reels remained in his possession.

It's especially great to see more footage of Rick. ❤
Rick Wright & David Gilmour together created some incredible vocal harmonies back in the day!
Watching this doc ,most people out there would not believe these 4 guys were capable of putting out masterpiece after masterpiece.
Couldn't agree with you more. The Floydian catalogue is unreal!
Good assumption for this new generation......but the real fans have seen(most) of this and more. There is alot to watch. Watch the interviews with Dougie....*insert last name(hope I spelled that right) as far back as Syd living in his house. Epic stuff.

Well when you think about it, they only lasted about another 6 years, they were pretty fragmented by 1977
43:12 Chris "I've been mad for f**king years, absolutely years" Adamson certainly deserves his moment on camera.
In 71 I was 11
..grew up with them... Loved the music ever since.. Glad to come across this thnx👍🍀
This a holy grail right here, never thought we'd get more from the Live at Pompeii era, makes me wonder how many other lost footage exists just waiting to be found
It's been almost 53 years. Just stunning 💖
I was about to say that this footage is pure gold... but actually it is an astounding piece of cosmic platinum!!!
The first thing I need to mention is David's dreamy lips. Second, Roger is ripped of his face. But what stands out mostly is that they are the most well spoken and well mannered young men in rock - especially for that time. This doc is awesome, thanks for posting. My fandom is complete. Thank you Pink Floyd for being in our lives.
As a Floyd fan, thank you so much! You absolutely made my day.
Epico rampalín !
Echoes remains and will remain one of my absolute favorite songs, and I'm not even a hardcore Pink Floyd fan. This one is just magical.
A million thank yous for uploading… didn’t have unearthed Pompeii footage on my 2024 bingo card but sooo grateful for the find
Si, tienes razón pequeño rampalito.
This is spectacular, I don't know where to begin! The new footage of Gilmour and Wright recording Echoes, that alone makes this so amazing! I suppose it was a given that Waters was in the booth while they were recording it, but I didn't know the extent to which he was producing their performance. This video warrants repeat viewing, no doubt, but the first impression I get is further confirmation that this band has little to no personal chemistry between them, it's truly amazing to think these people would be together for entire decade ahead, in this incarnation, during which they'd record some of the finest music in modern history.
I think there was a huge amount of chemistry. Very English chemistry perhaps.
Damn! Roger and David seemed so close and comfortable kicking it together, each adding their musical experience, making it fun. Thank you for completing the 70s with some of rocks all time best music, The Floyd will last forever, and stand the test of time,
❤❤❤❤
amazing how new stuff keeps turning up after so long.
Thank you for this. Wow I was 13 in 1970. This is phenominal to listen/watch PF's creative process. Love their sense of humor.
Magnifique enregistrement du plus grand groupe. Une pépite d'or 🥰
44:16 David Gilmour already writing the lyrics to the first track of The Endless River 43 years before its release! As soon as he said this I had to hit pause and put that album on. I knew I heard this before! That was really cool
They used this audio clip in the song.. Wouldn’t exactly say he was writing anything.
Well spotted! I'm not taking you literally, of course. But good job nonetheless.

Ive seen the Pompeii movie numerous times and have always enjoyed this era of Pink Floyd. Great to see this footage that must have been in a vault all these years.
Wow, I love Dink Freud. Thought I've seen every obscure footage over the years. Obviously not. Amazing, Rog had a sense of humor and sitting next to Dave. Maybe oysters really do transcend boundaries. Thanks for posting, sure every Floyd nerd fan is geeking out. Just like me, jolly good.
Haven’t seen this documentary before. Such a treat. Thanks for sharing!
This is fantastic! And man, were David and Richard good looking!!!
Yes they were... I’m a huge fan of both of them, I started a UA-cam channel on learning David Gilmour songs on guitar...
There was a time, pre internet, when me finding this on VHS would have been like a dream come true. Was collecting a lot of bootlegs, etc…the quality is unreal. Legendary interview were Waters talk about “the great financial collapse”
You could have some gold in your collection for all you know Fabien :) was it just video you were collecting, or audio as well?
Excellent! thank you! "Echoes" and "Live in Pompeji " Is my favourite Floyd Period. I first saw them live in 1970 where they drew heavily on songs from More, Umma Gumma (live side) and Atom Heart Mother. Apart from the brilliant playing and sound effects (Richard Wright with his azimuth coordinator) it was a joy to see the friendship of Gilmour ynx Waters on stage as they traded jokes etc... Some of that comes through with Waters toking....
Live in Pompeji remains one of the best concert films along with Monterey, Woodstock and Mad Dogs and Englishman, as I like stories to be interwoven with the music. As a pure live concert there's nothing better than AC/DC live at Donington: the incredible energy of both Singer and Angus doesn't let up for one second🎉❤
Oh my... David David David David.... oh my. So many bits that weren't complete anywhere else on the internet until this was released on the Cinémathèque Française. Oh my, David..... when I thought I couldn't be surprised anymore.
Original film master was destroyed I heard
More on vhs than DVD and that's why I need that tape damn it! Thanks for putting this up!
Roger. say what you like about him. but he made every single one of these songs and albums happen.
No doubt. He was really the supervising producer.
Roger, as always been - an arrogant, screwed up, insufferable prick.
Without the others (especially producers) all he could be is discordant noise.
Love this. Great to them all friends in 71'

I like how all of the members were on a spectrum of serious to not-serious, like on the serious end you had Rick Wright and on the other end you had Roger Waters who was probably so high he probably didnt have a clue what was going on 😂😂
4:51 the legendary moment of the oysters
Oh my God, so much footage I haven't seen
You can already feel the friction at that time. Very nice film
Yeah, but a lot of that is the personalities, really. I mean, Roger is being incredibly cocky throughout. But you can also see how David is maybe better at superficially hiding when he's annoyed, but can get just as annoyed as Roger. They just deal with it really differently - and in ways that aren't really that compatible.

What a wonderful portrayal, of one of my favourite bands. I'm really impressed with the quality of sound and vision here.... Listening to each member of the Floyd, give their opinions and views, regarding their music, themselves, and each other, was immensely interesting and humorous.....Them, being totally "stoned" throughout, made it all the more entertaining. I miss those days during the 70's...... the "freedom", along with "rebellion" and "experimentation" , What a "mindblast" it was !! Thank you oaksMA for putting this out there.

The cut at 26:31 got more adrenaline coursing through me than any music I've heard since the last time I heard that guitar!!
that is why I play Pink Floyd for the adrenaline and for all the years PF and the hairs on my head and arms standing on end sounds l I heard that guitar!! first time back in 84 Gilmore About face tour im hooked hope you got to see them live
@grinsomore4000 Same here. I saw the About Face show in Chicago. (Recently came across the ticket stubs!) Then saw Roger in his Pros and Cons era. Very different approaches!!! I'm not a Roger hater, but I enjoyed Gilmour's show more. His guitar style IS the adrenaline in the music for me. Saw every PF show they put on in Chicago or Milwaukee after that, which was a lot of shows, sometimes two days in a row.
The first Chicago show I saw (Momentary Laspe tour) they played Echoes. Then, as now, the part that I commented on above was the pinnacle of my entire lifetime of Floyd fandom!!! It gives me goosebumps thinking about it.
I could go on & on. :-)
As a bonus, Gilmour turns out to be a really decent human being too.
