I loved this interview with Rick!! He was the one who never talked ill about the other members of the band! Even against Roger, who forced him out of the band during the Wall recordings! He is/was a very nice man, and never sounded bitter about it! He deserved much better treatment, since his contributions was very intergral to the sound of the band!

David is the riff/solo master
Nick is the master of adapting and doing that with a certain edge
Syd is the soul, who even got all the previous guys thinking well unaware outside the box, and all of that lead to a bunch of guys doing extraordinary experimatental stuff and eventually getting good at it using all their powers they got. Guitar/lyrics with syd (especially with jugband blues) who was really a self aware and yet at the same time gone jester that engaged the other guys in the band.
Roger Waters is a soul eater.

I think it says it all that David Gilmour 'retired' Pink Floyd after Richard Wright passed away, but NOT when sergeant major Waters flounced out of the band. As others have rightly said, Richard was essential to the magic of the Floyd. His contribution was equal to all the others', including Gilmour and Waters. What a lovely gentleman he was. What integrity and character he had not to be bitter about what Waters did to him. Thank you, Richard. You are more loved than you'll ever know.

Rest In Peace to one of the greatest pianists of all time. Thank you for making the music that you made. People like me who are lost in life love the calming/powerful messages that you made through your music. As I’m starting overcome my depression over social anxiety and start to go out into the world, I have you to thank for helping me stay alive by keeping me calm when I am down through your music. I know I probably said too much information for UA-cam comments but Pink Floyd saved my life multiple times.

I honestly would be stark raving mad without music. I learned to play and that opened a whole world, even if it was living room parties... Never Give Up!
Had the opportunity to spend some time with Rick and his family in Big Sky Montana in 2003. He was married to an American gal who was a good friend of my girlfriend from Atlanta. We were vacationing at Big Sky when they happened to be there and had pizza with them at their vacation home and had an interesting conversation about John Denver. He had a very British attitude about things including the proper way to use your eating utensils. We were staying at an inexpensive hotel that had an indoor pool and Rick had a young son who wanted to go swimming. Strange sitting around a budget hotel pool with the keyboardist for the Floyd!
WTH?!? That's beyond cool. I would have bugged him until he ran for a posh hotel to avoid riffraff like myself.
The fermentation period for Pink Floyd was a prolonged process, but when they eventually found their sound Richard was very much at the centre of it. His playing was never over flashy but always sensitive to everyone else. He brought so much colour to their sound. More than this he always came across as a beautiful human being, with a warmth that really grounded him. For me the biggest loss for the band. Love you always Richard.

Completely agree with you both. 2 musicians we wish could live and record forever. Rick’s loss was tremendous and Roger should forever regret the way he treated him. But that’s Roger….

I never understand any notion of Rick Wright not being as big a part in Pink Floyd as any other member.

Yeah, just hit this and it started where he says "its always been a dream of mine to see Syd". And I guess now he has. Everybody says that he was just a sweetheart of a guy. Except maybe his first wife.

Apparently this guy was the Don Juan of Pink Floyd. Women fantasize about David Gilmour but Rick Wright was the leading scorer.

First off, I have to say thank you, John for posting these interviews with David, Nick, Rick and Roger. I've only seen the interviews with David and Roger. I just finished watching this one with Richard and I am immediately transported back to Venice in August of 2006 whereupon one night during my two weeks over in Venice and subsequent trip to Megiste, the inspiration for David's 'On An Island", I actually met Rick and his wife. We spent the better part of a couple of hours talking.
We covered a wide range of topics and not all of it was relegated to sycophantic fawning. Rick and I shared common ground with our love for sailing and we talked rather expansively on that alone. When we did veer off into the music we discussed influences and styles. I had kept it to myself for a little bit that I was also an aspiring pianist and keyboardist and when we started to talk about others we admired and, in my case tried to emulate I had made it known that I was largely inspired by Ray Manzarek of The Doors and him. By this time we were working on our second bottle of chianti and Millie had excused herself by that point to go back to their hotel. She gave me a look of approval and smiled and left us.
I felt a certain kinship and it warmed my heart to have this experience of talking with one of my heroes. We touched upon other pianists and keyboardists and Rick confessed that he had a tremendous amount of admiration and respect for Ray Manzarek briefly mentioning the slight parallel of Jim Morrison and Syd Barrett, both being difficult to work with. Of course there are differences between the antics and manipulations of Jim Morrison and the "black holes in the sky" vapidness and sometimes genius of Roger Keith Barrett's decline. Both succumbed to the vagaries of stardom and popularity. Whereas Syd's contributions were from 1965 to 1968 with only one full album and one song before his "ouster"; Jim Morrison's career at least lasted through five albums, six if you count 'An American Prayer' post-Jim's death.
We also got into a brief discussion about his battle with depression and while some of it was rooted in the loss of Syd, he talked about his first marriage to Juliette Gale for a few minutes before he directed the conversation towards the subject of Millie and her depression and then back to his time working with Pink Floyd after 'The Dark Side of The Moon' and on. I had brought up that I had lost my Grandfather back in the Fall of 2005 and I told him how the music had helped me through the grieving process and especially his 'Broken China' and David's 'On An Island'. I told him that I found the music to be therapeutic and we gestated into the above conversation. He was very empathetic and understanding. He was candid, funny, sincere and warm. In a manner he was like finding a long lost relative.
[Note: For the record I was truly devastated by his death as it had subsequently occurred after the deaths of my own Mother and Grandmother who had died over what I call "The Great Labor Day Massacre". They had died nearly 48 hours apart. My Grandmother passed away Sunday morning, August 31st at 1:41 a.m. and my Mother passed away at 1:43 a.m. on September the 2nd which consequently knocked my universe completely askance to say the least. So when Richard Wright passed that Tuesday, September 15th of 2008 I was just absolutely devastated and inconsolable for the rest of that year and into 2009.] I have since picked up the pieces of my life and moved on but not without that tiny whisper of melancholy that creeps in once in a blue moon.
Again thank you, John for sharing these expanded interviews. They help in dispelling the clouds and I have cause again to smile to myself and go,

Pink floyd was over when he died. He was amazing.
As a guitarist, I've always been a Gilmour fan; but to be honest, it's always been the keyboards that pulled me into Pink Floyd. My first album was Meddle, and Rick's contribution to that album is absolutely titanic.
Just an immense talent and a sad loss..I saw Floyd live at Newcastle City Hall..circa 73 and managed too get back stage after the gig.Managed to meet Mason and Wright..Just a really genuine guy..Rip Rick🌈

That was an excellent interview, John. One rarely heard from Rick, but as the interview showed, still waters certainly ran deep. He was insightful and honest in a manner that one rarely observes in rock stars. In fact, that is probably what made the Pink Floyd stand out so obviously from the crowd. Beyond their amazing creativity, all four were engaging individuals who exuded intelligence. And, presumably, so did Syd.

Rick was to Pink Floyd what John Paul Jones was to Zep. There's always that one quiet band member in the background who turns out to be the real source of their "Sound"
Each was integral part until roger wasn't.
I've said it before I'm 65 year old ex-doper and I still don't know 75% of the lyrics to all those classic tunes .
DSOTM with mundane lyrics would have had the same initial impact.
Perhaps after a few weeks of hashing out lyrics thing would gain more relevance.
But the music and melodies and arrangements captured the world out of the gate.
So nice to hear his voice and hear Rick reminisce about his insight and vision of his life, and the experience of PINK FLOYD .

I'm very glad that I live in an age when technique and science make it possible to watch this interview and listen to the voice of one of my greatest idols in my teenage years. I played (and still play) the piano and being able to create wonderful atmospheres like Rick did with his keyboards has always been my deam. Whenever Rick touched the first note, you immediately knew that it was him, and the tone of the song was set. His subtle keyboard playing was all that music should be about: feelings. That ability is something that cannot be learnt at schools. RIP Rick, you are missed so much, and definitely will be remembered forever.👍❤️🎹🎼🎵🎶

Fantastic interview .I fell in love with Pink Floyd when my neighbour was playing Echoes.He had a brand new stereo and I sat in the chair and I swear I was in the middle of the Ocean and imagining being out there .The sound stage just blew me away .I was 5 years old !

Superb interview. What a kind and warm person Rick Wright was. It really takes me back to an essential element about Pink Floyd. That they lost their creative and musical leader and very close friend. How they picked up afterwards and how it influenced their work going forward is clearer to me now. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how much I enjoyed Wright's lovely keyboard work. Wish You Were Here is also my favorite Floyd album and there's some great keyboard work there for sure. What amazes me about the Syd Barrett story when he came in the studio and no one recognized him is how he was let in at the door I presume someone knew who he was otherwise he wouldn't have got in !

A brilliant and talented man. I was able to see them do their soundcheck rehearsal for Live 8, their final time playing together as a quartet.
The rehearsal is many times better than the performance that was televised. Their voices were stronger as they had not done so many interviews yet. And they seem to have more spirit in it, just playing it on that big stage with an empty field in front of them...
I know it was filmed so I hope the rehearsal comes out someday!!
In so many ways, Rick was the anchor of the band! The high point was Dave and Rick singing together on Echoes! There was also great joint singing on Dark Side! It felt like everything came together at that point! That was the epic point for me!
I used to think that Waters made Pink Floyd what it has become ..... Until I listened to "The Dark Globe" by Syd Barrett. There! All of Pink Floyd. Waters stole his vocals (just listen and compare to "When The Tigers Broke Free", "Don't leave me know" , "Fletcher Memorial Home"), then he stole the name . The Dark Side of the Moon" IS the "dark globe". And to add insult to injury he has turned Syd's madness into that "Riding The Gravy Train" he sang on WYWH. 3 their best albums are about insanity, madness or impact of fame and show industry pressures on an individual. If you look at Pink Floyd closely you can discover that all what Waters led band did - commercialized Syd's musical ideas. I am not diminishing them in any way - they have achieved mega success and epic greatness. I am just saying that really "Meddle" and "The Dark Side of the Moon" were their pinnacle. And I am not surprised at diminishing output or interest in continuing from other members other than Roger.
Their harmonies were sung beautifully together. I remember first watching Live at Pompeii and just being completely awe-struck.
@@vicinvesta8349 I don't see it like that. It is obvious that they all loved Syd, and wished he hadn't slipped off into a world that he wasn't able to get out of. He wasn't coming back from that world, and they knew it. They had to move on, or pick another profession. Which would have been our loss. Instead they took the great things of Syd, and did their thing with it. What we ended up with is one of the greatest bands of all time. I remember when Dark Side of the Moon came out. We loved it, we over played it, but we didn't care. When Wishing You Where Here came out, we loved it too, but we weren't done with Dark. I'm very sad for Syd, his family and friends, but I'm not sad that these four guys turned Pink into one of the greatest bands ever. :)

Rick was the quiet observer, and Nick was the negotiator. Roger and David were two fighters in the ring.
Still Dave was more passive aggressive and just did his guitar and vocal magic. Roger was more domineering, and would bully the others. Saying their contributions were not important! To Roger, only the lyric writing was important! (The music industry agrees, since the lyric writers get the most royalties).
It was rather ironic, since when Roger took control, he probably would not accept the others songs as being good enough, or fitting into his “concept” album!

Rick is my favorite member. His keyboards were so integral to the overall sound. When I think about PF songs his playing comes through so strongly, even though I have been a guitarist since 1974. Including Animals, which is probably my favorite album: even though he wasn't really "in the band" fully, his playing on that album is amazing. He also comes across as a balanced, intelligent, humble humane person. RIP Richard Wright.

An afternoon Listening to Dark Side and Wish You were here is an afternoon of shelter from the outside world. 50 years later, they are as fresh and renewing as the day they were released. They are guys who did something with their youth. I was just trying to find a job and a girlfriend. . . I wish I could just shake their hands, buy them all a beer and thank them personally for the calm emotional space they made for us.
