I find it strange that Mercenaries in the Warhammer world are depicted as willing to switch sides at a moment's notice. Generally real life mercenaries will stick to a side for the duration of a conflict knowing that showing signs of treason is a good way to find yourself locked in combat with the enemy during an impromptu artillery barrage. This goes especially for the side you sell out to, because whoever your new employer is is going to be know better than anyone how easy you were to buy out. That, and most people just won't hire you. Better the mercenaries are on the enemy's side from the outset than to find a critical section of your battle line suddenly switching sides in the name of the almighty coin. And if your little trick pisses off, say, Karl Franz, you may learn firsthand that your little mercenary outfit isn't nearly as mighty and important as you thought it was.
ancient mercenaries were known for following contracts unless some better offer or opportunity was found, did you know the ottoman turks started off as mercinaries to the byzantines and simply saw an opportunity to conquer them insted.
It was actually rather common, even privateer navies would fight for the highest bidder. So much of the lore is based on history mixed with fantasy, and for me that's one of the best things about it!
@@matthiuskoenig3378 Do you have a source for this one. I'm genuinely interested in how the Eastern Roman Empire ostensibly being Roman Pantheonists then Christians hiring Muslim Mercenaries was a thing. Especially since the members of the Varangian guard were expected to convert as part of their service.
+James Adams Hail and Venerate his August Imperial Majesty, the mortal formerly known as Arch, Patron Saint and Champion of the mighty Bridge God. Praise be to the God Emperor of Mankind!!!!!!!!!

Sure Arch, games workshop prints out more fluff than most religions and all you need to do is read through bits of it on an awesome norse accent. We all benefit and it's like the ad money just prints itself. (Jk. the videos are actually pretty damn nicely produced.)
Short one today, still trying to work out the kinks of this very much so improvised recording setup while i wait for the comp to get back from the shop
Coin exists where trade exists, which means that mercs only operate where there are enough merchants to produce coin and convert it into goods. Basics like food, transport and sex are obtained from the locals largely free of charge, their objections nonwithstanding. No surprise that the distinction between brigands, mercs and state armies is a fine one not appreciated by the common man. The dynamics of merc work closely resemble that of the gladiatorial career, walking the line between shows of force and spilling blood, staying alive and making money along the way.
+Juggernaut He is right though, she betrayed all europeans. She went hard on the greeks and even told them they could leave the EU if not happy with austerity measures, but then imports millions of desert peasants from the perpetual islamic Middle Ages and when they rape, threaten and rob german citizens, she says the germans must accept them. Stewart Ashton Oh yea totally, the price for 4 years of University was 10$ ... 10 fucking dollars ! I wanted to go there and study just for the price :P Now... not so likely.
Ahhh, finally! *Morgan Bernhardt* is the hero you should look at, Arch! And while at it, it would be a fantastic experience to see you take on one of the classics, and yes, I mean *Dark Omen* and *Shadow of The Horned Rat* - the games devoted to depiction of those fantastic mercs out there.
Ah Dark Omen, what a great game that was. I've been looking all my life for a game with similar gameplay. Also the game that introduced me to Warhammer.
The Total War game (via expansions/DLCs) needs a Tilean faction, so that somebody will be in fighting-range of the Tomb Kings besides the Orcs. Besides, the Tileans would be the most logical Old World rival for the Lizardmen (Estalia has never had a tabletop army, so it doesn't count).
'''And rest asured , I inted to make videos for preety much every single one of them at some point...'' -Arch Warhammer ''WHEN DO YOU PLAN TO DO IT?!'' - Me

So heres a little story, i live in Poland. The eu demanded we take some of the muslim refugees, so we took a few in. We got them houses, food and all you need for basic life. The goverment tried even to find some work for them. And then suddenly, they ran away overnight to germany. So basicly we never have to worry about immigrants becouse the social support is shitty, its near impossible to get citizenship, and all around people around here hate muslims with passion. So at least we wont have to worry about being overwhelmed by the muslim culture like france or germany, who invited them themselves and now they are paying for it dearly. Beware the alien, the mutant, the heretic.
Bram Püschel they betray you, swayed by your enemies, but then they betray your enemies, so as an end result, they are still loyal. Maybe. Probably. Surely. Not.
Bram Püschel There are Skaven clans like Clan Rictus who hire their warriors out to other clans. They don't work for other races, though, because: 1) Council of 13 would declare them enemies of Skavendom 2) Skaven are too backstabby for other races 3)Skaven are racist gits
I was a Dogs of wars player when I was young, this army is awesome. There are two important units is missing in this video. Horse drawn Cannon and Mercenary Ogre. I used to use the cannon to kill the standalone lord or large monster in the first round. Very effective. And the ogre basically is a tank. It can beat everything on the table.
Love the Dogs of War, I used to play them myself. Can't wait for more! "Hectic situation"? Sounds like "sorry for the short clip, but my house is burning atm..." :D
Oh the certainly do...In so much as every Halfling that lives is another one that Emperor ArchFraz has to have killed for being leaches on the Imperial economy.

Interestingly enough, there are 2 books about this: one names Dogs of war, with just nameless units and merchent princes, and one with all the named guys.
The Rats of War gathered by Ratgha the Blighted hires out his RatBand for warpstone or slaves to Chaos-leaning peoples such as Dark Elves, Norscans/Kurgans, Orcs, Chaos Dwarfs, etc. This ratband make for great scouts, assassins, and skirmishers.
You forgot the noble Bretonian practice of hiring "sheep herders", which are by no means mercenaries. Just very well armed non-bretonian peasants which guard one sheep for a small fee. Of course hiring people who guard sheep is not done by Bretonian knights themselves.
Ironically, in real life Mercenaries(of the medieval and Renaissance periods, at least) could be quite loyal and, typically, fought to the death(when presented with no option of safe retreat). This tended to be because they were often similarly armed as(or otherwise capable of dealing with) knights and nobility and, as such, any mercenary that surrendered would find himself swinging from the nearest tree(because how dare this common wretch even try to shoot and possibly injure The Lord Sir Reginald III of Huxbury?!). Mercenaries also tended to make for very valuable troops because they were(typically) good, well equipped and entirely willing to murder the shit out of the nearest knight(since if he turned up with noble hostage his chances of being beheaded were about the same as his chances of getting some sort of recompense) - a knight that was typically quite far away because why get in there with a hammer when you can just shoot him with your arbalest?
alot of mercinaries were also 'adventurers' ie bord young nobels too far down the succession to ahave any real responsibilities or chance of inheritance, aswell as those who started out relatively poor or got too much debt. most mercinary bands included these nobels as well as some peasants.
Is there any chance that you will do a video about the "fantasy" weapons and armor, that the different nations and factions use? For example the ridicoulusly unwieldy halberd the empire has, or the "breast plate" they put on their horses, which is probably so heavy that poor beast dies after one full fledged charge, but I could also mention the ork axes that are just too thick to be considered "chopping" weapons.
I know it's an old video, but the " mercenaries are turncoats that constantly switch sides. " is such a dumb trope. They're actually prolly some of the better units you can rely on. Especially over say, freshly pressed recruits that have been forced into service for their kingdom, rather than these veteran mercenaries that sought that life out in the first place knowing what dangers they would face. Mercenary levies are usually pretty good at sticking it out with whatever side they're hired by. Otherwise, why would you ever get rehired? Yeah, they prolly run when the army is getting routed just like every other troop on the field, but they're not gonna randomly go " Oh they offered me a few more coins than you did, so now I'll fight you. " - If they develop a reputation for being that easily bought... they're gonna die. Fast. A group that doesn't like them will buy them, lure them into a trap sorta placed in between a bunch of ranks of their actual soldiers and then those soldiers will massacre that " levy mercenary regiment " when in reality those were the enemy all along and hiring them was bait to get the enemy where they wanted them. Loyalty wasn't that easily bought with mercenaries. Same thing with that stupid " Oh samurai were so honorable but ninjas were dishonorable cretins. " It was the polar opposite. Samurai were scumbags. Ninja would kill themselves or go on suicide missions to fulfill promises, even if the circumstances have changed well beyond the original agreement because " I gave my word and my word is my family's honor. " Samurai? " I decide what honor is and it's what I do. "
No mention of Richter Kreugar and his jolly bunch of mercenary skeletons? : < Also, wasn't it the Dogs of War who we played as in the original pc adaptations of Warhammer Fantasy? Morgan Bernhardt and his merry men (and elves, dwarves, ogres and whatever not else) fighting Orksies and Skaven in the first installment and more Orksies and the Undead (who were in fact, a rather terrifying mix of Vampire and Tomb Kings stuff o.o ). Both of them still awesome games and well worth playing after all these years, if you can get your hands on them and get them to work on modern PC's.

"I intend to make videos about them"
So what's the queue at now, 10,000 things to make a video about?
I'm still waiting for the [insert a random thing in WHFB/WH40K] !
10,000 seems a bit optimistic, i haven't even started on the horus heresy yett so probably closer to 100,000
Im still waiting for the japanese to make those sex robots . And arch are you a immortal prophet of the bridge god ?

Now I'm deeply hoping for a "Dogs of War"-DLC for Total Warhammer in the foreseeable future.
They are probably saving them for the sequel.
or even better; FLC - yeah i am a cheap brat and dont like to use money on what i can get for free :-)
You can play M2TW: BOTET.

you should do a part 2 and mention Richter Krueger!!
Did I hear Haflings? so... that lore video? :D
You should make a video discussing about the lycanthropy of Warhammer fantasy battle. Otherwise known as the "Children of Ulric"
Ahh good old lore

got to love bretonnia! haha
Could you maybe do a video on Commander Bernhardt and the Grudgebringers?
Hi. I love your videos. Can you start your mercenary videos with Morgan Bernhardt's Grudebringers ? Thanks in advance ;)
For the Moot !!!!!
No mention of Richter Kreugar and his jolly bunch of mercenary skeletons? : <
Also, wasn't it the Dogs of War who we played as in the original pc adaptations of Warhammer Fantasy? Hey arch, what is your favourite Skaven clan, mine is clan Skryre because how much like the Mechanicus (my favourite 40k faction) because they are both steampunky and based around TECHNOLOGY AND BATSHIT CRAZY SCIENCE!!!
Seriously, look at at 0:17, the guy with the spear to the rigth, the only one without a helmet. Doesnt he look like the god emperor Trump?
Aww you didnt mention the weirdest one of the merc regiments: the undead unit whose name escapes me at the moment
Richter Kreugar and his cursed company.
***** Yes thats the one! Thanks
Were the Dogs of War ever a very good army? Unfortunately, I never knew about most of these fantasy armies (except for Tomb Kings).
PS: Merry Christmas, Everyone!
What happened to the DOW individual unit videos Arch? I’d love to see that
More Dogs of War Plz?!
How about a video about pirates?
Basically landsknecht then
Is there going to be any lore on the minor factions like the Border Princes/Araby/Cathay?
Yes... EVENTUALLY.
Ya know, I would really appreciate if you would give us your opinion on Octarius war. Though it's from 40k, I think that is an event that will shape the future of the 40k universe, not really in a good way imh.
Howgh!
feed merkel to the dogs?
3:35 why settle for copper
40! KAAAAAAAY! AAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Video on halflings?
Make a witch hunter video and a Amazon warrior video.
at 11.50 you said they are equiped with crossbows but in the models they are with guns ?! Can they have both like the dwarfs units or was it a mistake
nope the models have crossbows. the box art image art has them from an angle that makes the bow part not be easily seen.
Lost legion!!!!!
