You should read what Niccolio Machiavelli wrote about mercs in his book The Prince. It's very insightful and would recommend. But enjoyed your take an them.
The Border Princes sounds like the Empire, only more Wild West with Swords and Greenskins.
Given their location they remind a lot to the Balkans, with the turks (orks) so uncomfortably close to their borders.
