Powerhouse drumming from Rick Buckler on Funeral Pyre. From '79 to '82 the Jam were untouchable. Straight in to No.1s including Double A sides. They spoke to the working class English/British (Saturday) kids back then. Fire and Skill !!
They really were a special band - and it was more than just the tunes.
What an absolute belter, I love the Jam. They were a very talented band and I remember feeling a tinge of sadness when learning of their break up back in the day!

A very underrated song. I believe bands should credit all their original tunes to all the members. REM & Red Hot Chili Peppers good examples. Drum & bass on Jam songs were a crucial element.
Rick Buckler's drumming on this song is a thing of genius. I loved Funeral Pyre from the very first moment I heard it as a 7yo girl (hardly their target market!). Foxton's insistent bass and Weller's impassioned vocal layered over the top make this a masterpiece of which I shall never tire. Baffles me how The Jam passed America by - hardly anyone on YT ever reacts to them, which I think is a travesty. Weller is a key socio-political poet of our lifetime.
Pity he's such a cock to go with it, but we'll gloss over that bit...
The drummer ,Rick Buckler lives a couple off roads away from me he is a real nice bloke.
Cool! He always comes across as a decent bloke.
Is he still into music, or has he gone back to woodworking full-time?
Apparently, when The Jam split, Rick Buckler said he was looking at going back to carpentry!?!? 🤔
I actually liked the stuff he was involved in with a Band called "Time UK" after The Jam ...check out a song called "Cabaret" ..I love it :-)
The jam incredible catalogue of tunes
Unbelievable run of singles. And their album tracks were awesome as well.
When they released the compilation album Snap! two years after that single they remixed this, because they weren't happy with the original mix, it was the only track on the compilation where they did that, Andrew's reaction shows what a good call that was!
It was fairly common in those days for artists to release non-album singles, some artists more than others, The Jam had others too.

First off. Welcome back. I missed you guys. You could do far worse than starting off with The Jam. Great song. I remember when that first album came out. I loved it and I still go back to it quite often. Tracks like, I Got By In Time, Away From The Numbers and of course In The City.

I really enjoyed this. The Jam are a band I've always heard casually and enjoyed the obvious singles, but I don't recall hearing this. It's quite furious and I love that energy from the driving rhythm section. You can hear the influence of the post-punk likes of Gang of Four in the guitars too. Great!
A rarely, if ever played Jam single on the radio, that’s what makes it even better.

As for this song, well... I was a massive fan of The Jam as a kid, still have all the albums and singles. Funeral Pyre for me is their best song, first time I heard it it blew me away, the sheer power. Even now, 40+ years later (blimey I'm old!) it still thrills me. My 2nd favourite song by the band, Tales from the Riverbank came out the same year, 1981, when they only released 2 singles, being the B-side of Absolute Beginners. Would be nice to see Andy react to that one. Cheers and welcome back!

Funeral Pyre reminds me of conspiracy theories concerning Behemia Grove and a yearly ceremony that is supposed to occur there, even now, called "the cremation of care". It's obviously fanciful to suggest Weller was writing about the Bohemia Club but as its members are all the rich and powerful people of the world....Well it's what I think about when hearing that song.

Enjoyed that guys. Great review. You hit the nail on the head in regards to, both the powerful driving bass and drums...but also the very biting lyrics...which The Jam were always about. And yes, a real reflection of what was (and 40 odd years later still) going on politically.

It's very annoying that in the official Jam biography that Paul Weller put out in preparation for his style council project that this record was viewed as a low point and the funky horns of the follow-up. A sign for much better things to come to quote the book. Find this staggering and speaks volumes on the lack of appreciation of the band and its separate musicians as a whole for funeral Pyre for me is one of their greatest singles and one of the best songs the jam put out. It's also the one that got away in that. Finally, the band got a credit because Weller's dad always made sure they never did
Jon: I think some in the US knew The Jam, even before Town Called Malice hit. There was just so much great music to pick from in the late 70s/early 80s.
Granted, it took my dad buying the Snap! Compilation for me to pay attention.
As a kid I found it such an exciting time. I hope kids today feel the same about now. Revisiting that period of music when older, I found it even more exciting.

Almost half the Jam's singles weren't on an LP. I don't think it's correct that Paul Weller decided to split the Jam around this time. He was feeling hemmed in and he thought about it but he didn't take the decision until after The Gift was released.
I can understand the American guy not knowing much about The Jam but he should’ve interviewed someone who was more of a Jam fan and who had more knowledge of the bands history and discography. There are thousands and thousands of us to choose from!
Thanks for dropping in with the observation, and so glad you're a big fan of The Jam. The thing is though, Jon (the English fellow) and Andy (the American guy) are friends who partnered to start this channel as a vehicle for exchanging music with one another, and you just bore witness to one of those exchanges. This was less an "interview" and more an example of two friends getting together and sharing music, much like a book club for music. Very England-specific lyrics, John would have his work cut out explaining them (starting with "fags" in the first line, which in context is both cigarettes and schoolboy-servants). My Oath but that song was prescient!
When Cameron said that was one of his favourite songs - it just summed up the ruling elite in this country. And nothing changes. I'll stop there, before I go into full rant mode.

Half of all Jam songs were non album singles so hardly a rarity, Going Underground, Funeral Pyre , Absolute Beginners, Strange Town, When Your Young , All Around the World, Beat Surrender, Bitterest Pill, News of The World, all non album singles by the Band.
Non album singles were not a rare thing back then, quite a few bands would release stand alone singles in-between albums
